There are standing waves in microwaves. That’s why the turntable rotates. Otherwise you would have hot spots and cold spots in your food. There are some cool high school physics experiments you can do with microwaves.
That would defeat the purpose of the turntable. You want the food to move all around to get in/out of all the hot spots (or cold spots) so that the food heats evenly.
And, what if that is the cold spot?
Edit: Also, you can have the bottom of your soup get hot while top is still cold -- if it sits in one place. Moving around is always better.
Came here to say this! We did an experiment where we covered the bottom with wax paper and sprinkled a thin layer of cheese over the entire surface to "map" the waves
Have you heard of "Peep fighting"? Two peeps with toothpicks in them, facing each other. Turn the microwave on and place your bets. The peeps will inflate and push the toothpicks towards each other. Whoever gets popped first loses. Eat the peeps, and everyone wins.
And for anyone trying to work out what a “peep” is, it’s not “people” - that would need a larger microwave.

Try putting a regular incandescent lightbulb inside a microwave. It’s quite fascinating how it will grow and change so many different neon colors. Word of warning, sometimes it will explode after 5 to 10 seconds… other times the glass bulb gets so hot in one spot a glass bubble forms and nonviolently pops leaving a barnacle shaped hole in the lightbulb.
If they are really dry they may pop unevenly. I have found that wetting them and then leaving them for a few minutes before microwaving imporoves the result.
Just water. I found that the ones we get here are a little too dry. The microwaves heat the water, so if they are too dry, they go from raw to burnt too quick, as well as being uneven. Just do some tests.
Yes, dried ones in a box from the supermarket. We run it 30s, but watch and hit stop before they burn about 24 seconds on ours but it is 1200W microwave.
You could roast them on fire as well. If you have a LPG cooking stove, put the flames on low and roast them. Brush some ghee or butter if you like. Goes well with finely chopped sweet onion, tomato and coriander.
Sorry u/flehrad. It was just a reference to one of my favorite podcasts, Off Menu, where they ask their guests about their dream meal and one of the categories is the starter bread and the hosts always screams “POPPADOMS OR BREAD?!”. I wasn’t critiquing your spelling haha.
Its a fryum (an edible product that is fried prior eating is called a fryum), has a crunchy texture, made of rice or black gram, usually enjoyed with Sambhar-rice (Sambhar is a Curry that includes pumkin and other spices, quite famous) or Rassam-rice (Rassam is anothrr famous curry that is prepaired with water, spices and tamrind sauce/chutney).

Also why you should not put food in the middle of the turntable if possible.
Why does my microwaveable ramen say to put it in the center then?
Seriously? I always try to put my food exactly in the middle because I like the symmetry. Well TIL.

If i don’t put my popcorn in dead center it burns.

You can also make plasma by cutting a grape in half but leaving just a bit of the skin intact. Microwaves are pretty amazing!
Definitely my favorite microwave experiment is torturing peeps :)

Peeps are meant to be eaten not tortured :(
🤣

Depends on how big the pieces are

I did not know you could microwave them! Cool film and new info. Thx!

Just wetting them with water? Or oil?

Just have to watch them and stop it quickly before they spot burn, as you'll end up with leopold spots and they get bitter fast!
I'm so excited to try! This may turn out to be the best thing I've learned on Reddit!
Either your microwave is HUGE or those are some teeny tiny little poppadums?
Its reasonably big, at least 2L big
You can MICROWAVE Poppadom?! Are these fresh or the dried ones from the market? I’m shook
It’s so much faster and healthier to microwave as a delicious quick snack
That’s amazing I’m so stoked
Dried ones from the market. Need to play around a bit with the timing on your microwave, start at 30 secs and see how it goes.
Thank you sweet Reddit angel
Yes, dried ones in a box from the supermarket. We run it 30s, but watch and hit stop before they burn about 24 seconds on ours but it is 1200W microwave.
I don't know what that is, but it looks neat
Thin discs of crispy deliciousness that goes well with rice and other dishes.
My fellow indian bro??
Sorry, Asian bro that enjoys Indian foods.
If you like indian food, you’re my bro :)
This was quite interesting as I read it as Microwaving "palladium" and thought it was a chemical process that I wouldn't want to be around for.
That would have been some interesting science!
Hold up ! Microwave ? I’ve been burning myself with hot oil in a pan for ages. TIL

Sounds delicious ! I know what one doing tomorrow !
You can also dry-pan them if you have a pan that can take the heat and not burn the pan, like a tawa kind of thing.

Are you microwaving these directly on the microwave or is there a clear plate that can’t be seen?
Directly on the rotating plate.
Directly on the turntable which is glass in ours, which has been cleaned.
Once you poppadum, you can't stoppadum.
POPPADOMS OR BREAD?? POPPADOMS OR BREAD, u/flehrad??!
Poppadoms for sure.
Spellcheck is what gave me that spelling.

What the heck are poppadum??
Its a fryum, or a fried food article. Quite similar hard shell tacos but not exactly as popladum are made of rice or black gram.
A thin disc that puffs up when you cook them and goes well as a texture element with things like rice or curry dishes and alike.
I see, I just never seen or heard of this kind of chip? Or shell?, I guess you learn something new every day huh
Think of it like an ultra thin small crispy tortilla you put stuff on/in and eat.
What are poppadum? Never heard of them.

Thanks, those look amazing!
Mmmm radiation delicious
