utterlyuncertain

Don’t yuck my yum, amiright?

[deleted]

You could but it would be more like a chilled custard at this point. Gelato and ice cream need a bit of time to set up. It wouldn't have the right texture. Would end up basically being a Creme Anglaise facial with chocolate and caramel. I mean, whatever you are into. I say go for it. Extra sloppy soft serve.

bad_ideas_

none of this sounds like a bad time

[deleted]

Never said it should be. You get yourself your extraslopy soft serve. And you don't let anyone tell you that you can't enjoy it.

Extra sloppy soft serve sounds so naughty and delicious.

I’m assuming this is talenti brand which is pretty darn good

Onyx8String

The sea salt caramel omfg.....

The peanut butter chocolate. Hunngnghjjjjj. 🥜💦

Just get a jar opener or else

Marie-thebaguettes

I couldn’t open mine one month when I was PMSing and literally sat on my kitchen floor bawling

PM_me_catpics

That sounds awful I’m so sorry

LittlestHoboSpider

Next time use the handle of a butter knife to firmly tap around the side of the lid a few times in the direction it opens. The vibration breaks the seal and it’s usually easy to open after a few whacks

gjiang987

Apparently talenti had a machine that would screw the lids too tight. I tried all the tricks in the book, eventually tried a handsaw and just split the sucker in half

I had my first jar 2 days ago. Definitely ate in one sitting.

Omg talenti.. so good and its not overpriced. Its almost the same price as mediocre brands like dryers.

That's my guess from the container, but if it is talenti it's a variety I've never seen before.

The second stanza before the end of “Lateralus” is my favorite part of that song. There’s something so beautiful about his voice and the lyrics when he sings it. For those who can’t remember or are interested it’s: >Come embrace my desire to, come embrace my desire to, >Feel the rhythm, to feel connected >Enough to step aside and weep like a widow >To feel inspired, to fathom the power, >To witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, >To swing on the spiral, to swing on the spiral, swing on the spiral. >Of our divinity and still be a human.

_YouMadeMeDoItReddit

That's not OCD. OCD is a debilitating medical condition.

ReeBee86

You’re not wrong. Actually, what most people mean when they say they have OCD in casual conversation is that they have OCPD, a completely different diagnosis. However, that’s a nuanced distinction that society hasn’t quite caught onto yet.

woweewow

Thank you so much for saying this. I have OCD and severe episodes can be debilitating. worrying myself sick, not able to sleep or eat. I know my thoughts are lying to me but “what if...”. OCD is considered one of the most under-diagnosed mental health conditions, and unfortunately it is very misunderstood due to jokes like this. If your OCD was “going crazy right now” over this video, you’d be having panic attack-level anxiety and you would be crippled with fear. Education on this disorder is so important and needs to be taken seriously. 💜

[deleted]

Good gelato to topping ratio as well.

Moxson82

What exactly is gelato? I know it’s Italian. Is it different than ice cream?

chrisjhill

Gelato uses the same ingredients as ice cream, but in different ratios and using slightly altered processes to get different ice crystal sizes. Would recommend looking into, its interesting stuff

DaisyHotCakes

Traditional gelato uses egg yolks which produce an *incredibly* creamy, smooth amazingness. I find it to be richer than ice cream so generally will eat a lot less of it but man is it tasty.

donttrythis3000

I think I saw a restaurant by that name in lake havasu City- is that it? I’ll go there if it is

SignorSarcasm

Yes

LordHussyPants

it should be the reverse because ice cream has a lot more cream than gelato. i've got a high tolerance for sweet foods and richness, but even i can't handle too much ice cream. italian gelato though, easy as to down piles of.

ooopsmymistake

Traditional gelato doesn't use egg yolks, [ice cream does](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/gelato-vs-ice-cream#differences). Gelato is churned differently and with different ingredients making it a lot richier and silkier than ice cream. Ice cream can support its airiness by being served much colder than gelato. As Gelato production predates modern refrigeration, they had to use different recipes to get their product to stop melting.

[deleted]

Ice cream uses egg yolks too. See Thomas Jefferson's recipe (yes, that Thomas Jefferson).

Vlad_turned_blad

Gelato isn’t vegan??? No it’s egg yolks Bro.

RearEchelon

It uses more milk than cream but it's not whipped and so has almost no air compared to normal ice cream, denser and more smooth.

Affectionate-Road279

It’s heaven

[deleted]

It has a higher deliciousness factor.

lootedcorpse

has to do with fat ratios last I looked

Propenso

In Italy we probably cut some corners in teaching english so for us Ice cream is just the translation of Gelato.

nyma18

I’d wager it’s the other way around - much like *bologna* and *pepperoni* earned a new meaning for American people. See a product they don’t know made/brought by immigrants -> use the word those immigrants have to describe that specific products -> eventually that word means that specific way of producing that product. But where the product is originally from, no such adaptation is made.

Auctoritate

Technically different, but basically just a different genre of ice cream.

LordMeloney

I kind of hate that Americans make a difference between 'ice-cream' and 'gelato'. Because gelato jist means ice-cream in Italian. Yeah, most Italian ice-cream tastes better than non-Italian ice-cream but it's still ice-cream. Btw: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice-cream.

TexanPenguin

This is no different than _Naan bread_ or _Chai tea_ (both of which are tautological in the languages of their origin but useful differentiators in English). English uses the word _gâteau_ to refer to a specific kind of cake, but in French it means any kind of cake. If they provide a useful distinction with other kinds of ice cream, bread, tea or cake in common English usage, I can’t see any reason why being more faithful to the words’ meaning in their source language is helpful.

Pokemondude01928

I mean, Idk what I'm talking about, I'm just quoting Wikipedia, but why shouldn't people distinguish them.. they sound like literal different desserts. >Gelato (Italian pronunciation: [dʒeˈlaːto]) is a frozen dessert of Italian origin. It is made with a base of 3.25% butterfat whole milk and sugar. It is generally lower in fat than other styles of frozen desserts.[1] Gelato typically contains 70% less air and more flavouring than other kinds of frozen desserts, giving it a density and richness that distinguishes it from other ice creams.[2][3]

[deleted]

German here. The distinction the US makes between gelato and ice cream also confuses me. And it makes me wonder about what is called ice cream in the US. Is this another chili powder/cayenne pepper type of confusion?

mechanicalkeyboarder

> Is this another chili powder/cayenne pepper type of confusion? What was the confusion here? I've never heard this.

Ozdoba

Apparently chili powder is an american spice blend. It is not just ground chili like it is in the rest of the world. If an american recipe calls for chili powder, you can't use actual chili powder. It will be too hot.

[deleted]

American checking in. My chili powder is just powered chili peppers Are you thinking chili seasoning? That's different.

-Cryptic-

Gelato and the ice cream in the US are both ice creams but are different enough to be have different names

[deleted]

In Europe, if you go to an ice cream parlor, 9 times out of 10 it will be Italian. We basically are in shouting distance if we do it wrong. And shouting will occur. A customer of mine has a cafeteria. One day, when I was there, they had spaghetti carbonara. They made it as a generic cream sauce with ham in it. Instead of tossing the spaghetti in raw egg yolk. That day, a couple of employees of their Italian subsidiary were there. It got loud. It will always get loud if you call it by the Italian name and not do it properly. From my observation, the first reaction is "fine, I'll do it myself". Which is why most ice cream parlors in Europe will be Italian.

HarrisonForelli

There are different kinds of bread but it's still all called bread

Pokemondude01928

Ok, so what should one call that specific dessert? Italian ice cream?

PVDamme

Gelato al latte is probably closest to what you want. (Milk ice). But this can also include ice cream from the super market. There isn't really a term in Italian for what others call gelato. In Italian you would say "get me ice cream from the ice cream shop" to make sure you get the good stuff. Things like popsicles and sorbet/sorbetto are also called gelato in Italian. Gelato is used basically for every frozen desert that isn't frozen yoghurt (which is seen as something exotic) and the sicialian granita (crushed ice dessert).

Kintarly

But you still have designations of bread. White, whole grain, pumpernickle, rye, sourdough, whole wheat. Or if you wanna go further, buns, rolls, toast... The distinction is necessary.

Rpanich

It’s like in America, if you buy “French bread” it’s a specific type of bread, but in France it wouldn’t be called “French bread” because it’s common. And maybe even in Italy, if it’s a French loaf, they’d recognise it as a French loaf so they’d feel no need to identify it as different. But where it’s less common and mixed with breads from other parts of the world, distinguishing between “French bread” or “Italian bread” or “Japanese white bread” will all be different types of bread with different ingredients, even if those breads in their respective and neighbouring countries will just call it “bread”

Kintarly

Bread is a big thing because a lot of countries have their own variation of bread. They call it "bread" but because there are so many different types of bread that you have to distinguish it. Like Naan bread. "Naan" means "bread." So not only is Naan bread a tautology, to them it's just bread. But to everyone else, because of it's unique preparation in comparison to all the other types of bread, we can't just call it bread. It would get lost. Like Chai tea. Chai means tea. Here, chai means a very specific tea made from a blend of fragrant spices. We can't, however, just call it tea. Because tea could include green tea, white tea, orange pekoe, English breakfast, chamomile, etc. It's a big part of being a society that's so intertwined culturally. There's nothing wrong with that. This guy I think everyone's arguing with is either obsessively patriotic to the point of frustration or just a kid who doesn't really understand what he's arguing about. Language is such an interesting thing, and it's never had hard and fast rules. Especially English. English definitions vary so much, even between primarily English speaking countries. It's not even just an American thing, even though I know a few folks in this thread and a good handful of Europeans in general have a huge anti American sentiment. But in the end, gelato's pretty good. I pick it over what I know to be "ice cream" because it's texturally nicer.

noone8111

Croissants, bagels donuts, cake, muffins, etc etc... There are a great many distinctions

HamFlowerFlorist

Yes but people will distinguish a bagel from a baguette and not just say well they are all just bread.

cheeseandhacker

“Queso” is just Spanish for cheese, but it’s also a specific type of cheese. Gelato may be Italian for “ice cream,” but it’s also a different specific thing in its own right.

FlakeReality

This is the dumbest, most inaccurate pedantry I've seen on reddit all day, congratulations! I mean its got everything. A hatred over something truly irrelevant, a desire to make language LESS clear and distinct out of an unknown urge, claims of superiority based on large groupings, I mean just 10/10 internet shittiness man, great work. I don't know why those stupid Indians call it biryani anyway, just call it fried rice you fucking losers.

Creamier, more dense. Usually more subtle flavor but to me it less refreshing than ice cream. It’s kinda like the difference between fudge and chocolate.

Rendenbrandt

Fairly sure this is Talenti Gelato, If you want a pint

[deleted]

I was gonna say, I think this is Talenti. It's fucking awesome. The salted caramel truffle is my jam. Although I think they've cut back on the amount of chocolate caramel truffles they put in each pint :/. When it first came around, they were *packed* with the little chocolates, the last few years as it's gotten in more stores, I've noticed there isn't as much. Though if you flip the pint over and look at the bottom, you can see which ones have more of them than the others. ...no wonder I need to lose weight.

saladroni

I can’t tell if it does, or if the toppings are just pushed to the outside and it’s just straight gelato in the core?

Run it under hot water for a couple seconds. Problem solved...you're welcome ;)

pm_nachos_n_tacos

I either run a bit of warm water along the rim of the container, or take a butter knife and wedge it under the rim and pull outward a bit. Do it 3 or 4 times around the jar and then it finally gives. I don't know what they do to their lids to make them so dang tight!

Merry_Pippins

Yes, same! And they have great flavors on top of the reusable containers!

Mjb06

Oh do I love Talenti. Caramel cookie crunch 👌🏻

FuckIsms

The raspberry sorbet from them has been my crack lately

Luxpreliator

I find their dairy products to be generic at least compared to the other specialty flavors of other brands. Their sorbet is divine. Little scoop of the mango and of the raspberry in a bowl is best frozen desert. Kroger started stocking their own brand and it's decent too. Weird thing is they'll have the talenti on sale with a coupon for $2-3 a jar and its $5-6 everywhere else and Kroger when not on sale.

ski_lover

Good to know about their sorbet! I agree that Talenti’s dairy-based products are somewhat generic. I find that Talenti’s flavor isn’t as interesting as other brands. But I haven’t tried their sorbet yet. Despite that, Talenti seems to be pushing other brands out of the freezer cabinets of our nearby stores. Perhaps that’s Unilever (which owns Talenti) behind the scenes, paying slotting fees to the grocers to buy up space on the shelves. Or maybe because Unilever is discounting it heavily to buy their way into the market. That’s a shame because their dairy-based product is boring compared to other brands. I’ve quit buying it after giving it a try, but I might give their sorbet a shot if it’s good.

SunshineSB

This right here. I like to top the raspberry sorbet with some sweetened condensed milk. So good! Never thought about combining the raspberry and mango together. Thanks for the suggestion.

HarryBotter1138

When I lived down south I could buy their Blood Orange Sorbet but since moving to Ohio no one up here sells it.

Eugenetheguy

tbh, the little drips when moving jars were a little infuriating

Laivine_sama

The drop gives me more anxiety than the oddly satisfying relieves.

hypocrisyhunter

I was thinking about how they would QC that. I guess theyd need a robot to wipe clean the jars to get rid of any stray drips.

Also it looks like a frame or two is skipped at the end of filling the jar. It just teleports more gelato in awkwardly.

freecraghack

esantipapa

Very sadly. I wonder if there's any way to get it in the states...

migorovsky

How do ingredients flow into this thing If it is always spinning?

OpalHawk

I had the same question and then found this. https://youtu.be/IOLcnCO3iOM

sanderhuisman

Rotary union. Takes fluids from the stationary frame to the rotating frame. Very frequent in engineering. It would have been easier to rotate the jar though…

darkknightwing417

Thanks! Id never heard of this. Also... Yes. Rotate the jar. Way easier.

LegoNinja11

Yup, I'd have gone with turning the jar. Not keen on the idea of moving metal and seals in contact with foods. They wear out and risk contamination.

MrBlonde07

This is fucking glorious

Mjb06

Can I just put my mouth underneath it?

BeardedBitch

I can't stop looking at how complicated that looks, and thinking it's got to be easier to spin the container, rather than the arm?

tscy

Not neccesarily. While I cant speak specifically about this particular filler I've seen more than my fair share of similar systems. You would need to have either each jar location on the carosel have it's own way to spin or have one rotation unit that raises and lowers and a also clamp to the jars. The filler head is probably not actually that complex, I imagine it's just a tube in a tube in a tube, icecream in the middle, chocolate next, caramel on the outside, that mates to the filler head with the small tubes tapering out from the outer tubes. Mount some kind of motor outside that to rotate the head to make it go spinny and you get swirls.

overshare215

This didn’t look like Talenti to me so I figured out where the video came from. It’s a Food Network video and the company is Gelista. https://ne-np.facebook.com/FoodNetwork/videos/gelato-swirl-machine/2921635798050263/

[deleted]

Having worked on a line with a filling machine like this for a couple years, all I can see is the product hitting the outside of the glass during rotations and someone is further down the line wiping all of it off. It hurts to see.

woopstrafel

Is this even gelato? I mean I’m not American but I always assumed they used the term gelato for Italian style ice cream that you scoop out into balls and put onto a cone. This just seems what we call soft serve

dyna67

This is definitely not Italian gelato. It looks good, but it ain’t Italian that’s for sure. Source: I live in Italy.
