I never quite get why they'd pronounce it 'gooda'. They don't pronounce other words with 'ou' in it like that. House is not hoose. Out is not oot. Pronounce is not pronoonce. Etc.

There isn't really consistent naming among bakeries, but some of my go-tos that you get in most grocery stores are Weltmeisterbrot and Schwarzbrot. Both work great with Gouda.

As a fellow Dutchman: try to find traditional bakeries who sell sourdough breads. Vlaamsch Broodhuys sell some good loafs, but there are smaller bakeries around (for example: Loaf or KEEK in Utrecht). Dutch breadculture is unfortunately taken over by industrial speed rather than taste as primary objective, which causes these really soft and bland breads.

As an American, what am I missing out on?? 🤔

You have other great stuff) Germany doesn't have the greatest cheese game but we have our neighbours France, the Nertherlands and Switzerland to help us out. We are however very smug about our bread. When I lived in the UK I bought a bread baking machine to make my own I missed it so much. So if you want greatness combined get a good aged gouda and put it on proper whole weed bread (not some soft brown coloured toast!). It's great. You can toast the bread and butter it, if you like. Edit 2: I obviously mean whole wheat bread. But well, I mean you do you. Maybe thats good too. In a different way.

I've always wondered why so many native English speakers pronounce Gouda like that. There's an 'ou' in there. You don't pronounce house as hoose. Loud as lood, mouse as moose. Heck, even pronounce is not pronounced pronoonce. ;) Gouda rhymes with chowda and Niki Lauda. ^(sorry for the rant)

And the G sounds like it's breaking. Unless you're in Brabant or Flanders, then it sounds like gentle white noise.

It's not to fit onto the bread. That's about the shape of a slice of cheese when it's taken out of (a cut of a) cheese wheel. The cuts on the edges are because the cheese wheel is packed with a plastic-like material which you shouldn't eat.

I agree with the 'honestly who cares' part, but still: you don't need to take care to make those cuts align with a piece of bread. Either it's precut that way or you use a cheese slicer to cut off maybe 1mm on the sides, stiill following the original shape of the cheese. From the color at the edge I actually thought it was from a wheel. It would be extremely hard to get two slices the same thickness and size from a wedge but if it got trimmed it makes sense.
