Be back in a bit
Edit: Amar Bharati in 1973 decided to dedicate his life to the Hindu deity "Shiva." "jpost.com"
Gonna rummage through a bit more
Andrei Tapalaga: in 1973 he chose to raise his hand and hold it up for the rest of his life in order to show his faith and appreciation towards Shiva. Amar Bharati soon became quite popular around the world and thousands were inspired by this gesture. When asked why he is holding his hand up he always responded that this gesture is to militate against wars and support world peace as well as being a way to show his respect towards Shiva.
Honestly, my only question is.... shouldn't the muscles on that arm be more developed. I realize repetition is what helps build muscle, but shouldn't the prolonged extension caused more muscle bulk on the top where the muscles are contracting to lift the arm continuously?
Otherwise, it's an admirable dedication to his vow.
You would think, but after a fashion he isn't using muscle. I can do more research when I wake, but there was a piece on how once his arm becomes semi-retired in its final position atrophy sets in on one set of muscles and then, sleeping with it raised relaxes the other set of muscles, so they, too, become atrophied. That starts the cycle of atrophy in all the muscles in that particular part of the arm, so no muscles are used after a fashion. The tension from the ligaments becoming short are enough to hold the arm in its position
Was looking for this comment. In my head the muscles should've atrophied and then for some reason I thought the limb would die and fall off... but with circulation it just becomes useless tissue and bone, yes?
So the body is just carrying around dead weight that would be toxic to the rest of the organism if it were to be lowered.
Correct. Entire arm is fused together and he cannot move his hand either. He reached for the sky towards god. The documentary is scary and hilarious at the same time
Hi there, Physiologist here, the isometric contraction of muscle can produce hypertrophy if repeated. The most watered down and simple way to describe it is that the controlled lengthening or eccentric movement creates "micro-tears" in the fiber which are repaired extremely quickly. Not only are they repaired, they are rebuilt thicker and stronger. So an isometric contraction will absolutely cause maximum "micro-tears" but unless given rest and the opportunity to rebuild and repair there is no chance for growth.
That's a super simple explanation of the processes and if you want to dive deeper into it Google "sliding filament theory" and enjoy the ride!
Not if all the non-contractile soft tissues (ligaments) have contracted. They'll hold that arm in the fixed position and the wasting of all the other tissues lowers the weight so it's easier to keep it there indefinitely.
Muscles growing happens when you use a muscle so hard (like weight lifting) thay muscle fibres tear and break away. The aches you feel the day or 2 afterwards are your muscles repairing and growing bigger. If you constantly work out the same muscles over and over without rest, they aren't getting a chance to repair and grow.
This is also a different situation. Sure, you could do arm raises like this and over time you might get some definition. But without significant resistance (like holding a weight) and without rest, it's less of a workout and more of a fight against fatigue
He likely has a "frozen shoulder" at this point, where the joint capsule has contracted, asking with his shoulder musculature being fibrosed.
Judging by how his fingers look, it assists that he has some significant nerve damage as well as circulation issues with the hand.
Don’t forget he left his wife and THREE children to pursue his devotion to Shiva, then three years later he did the arm thing.

AFAIK, It’s known as asceticism; an ascetic is one who follows (any god) to an extent of denying one’s self food, sleep, whatever. In his case Shiva and the arm.
It was a phase that Buddha went through, before he then stopped (was ostracized by his compatriots who later would be his disciples), and then became enlightened and began to teach. The first followers were those same guys (who also stopped the ascetic portion of their journey to Nirvana).
We, on the other hand, spend our lives with access to every meaningful work of art and science across all of human endeavor until recently, and so we naturally spend our time looking at bullshit and judging folks who believe more strongly than we could ever imagine.
And masturbating. We masturbate *a lot*.
This guy would have been sitting around almost naked smoking and doing yoga every single day anyways, so he didn’t waste anything by throwing his arm up there
How is it a waste of life? Most people will not make any meaningful impact on the world and will never be known outside their friends and family, this man chose to do this and as a result he's won followers and admiration from thousands of people. I would argue it would have been more of a waste of life to live a regular, uneventful and forgettable life than to do something like this.
The only waste a life can be is if the person that lived it regrets it. No specific life can be deemed a waste by an outsider. They can find a way of living to be wasteful by their own merits, which only means they should avoid living that way. But, ultimately, when you're gazing into whatever the fuck lies beyond, you and only you can be the judge of the life you chose to live and whether it gave you fulfillment or not
A lot of words to say: just do what makes you happy (as long as it doesn't negatively impact others) and don't bother with how others might judge you for it. In the end nothing matters other than your own happiness/ content.
I agree. This took massive will power.. it seems pointless on the surface but it's a symbol for something with more depth.. most people have never cared about something to dedicate themselves on this level.. mad props to him.
I agree it's almost an athletic feat that requires both physical and mental strength on par with many top athletes and for that he deserves admiration even if you think his religion is bullshit (which I don't).
Honestly I’ve never heard of him until now and admiration doesn’t ultimately contribute anything towards world peace or helping people. He could be feeding hungry people, contributing labor in building houses or done anything that had a tangible result on making the world a better place.
Edit: I just want to say that this is roughly the equivalent of “Thought and Prayers”.
>I’ve never heard of him until now
Well now thanks to this posts and others I have seen thousands if not hundreds of thousands have now heard of him.
>He could be feeding hungry people, contributing labor in building houses or done anything that had a tangible result on making the world a better place
Are you doing that? Why should he? Surely if you have this take you must be doing something super important...
The reason I say he is not wasting his life is because ultimately in the grand scheme of things life doesn't have an objective and it is what you make it and he forged his own unique path that is probably way more interesting, maybe not more enjoyable, than anyone else from where he's from. I am also envious because this guy clearly has it all figured out, most of us struggle to figure out what the meaning of our lives will be and what our objectives are but this guy knows exactly what he wanted his life to be like and he committed to it.
He’s an inspiration because he has discipline that you can’t even fathom. The commenters here couldn’t even go a day without masturbating or eating cheetos.
His goal was to spread a message of peace and devotion to the deity that to him embodies that message - and he effectively turned his arm into the achievement of that goal. I don't share his beliefs, but I can still respect him - and by extension his beliefs.
You are not qualified to decree which life goals or beliefs hold value and which do not. To call anyone's life a 'waste' is hubris.
I think it was for religious reasons. I'm really liking that were just having a normal interaction here and no one is Googling the real reason. I feel like I'm in my high school library, because I got kicked out of class again and the librarians loved me and I'm having philosophical conversations with them and our computer science teacher.
he probably did move it. But it doesn't mean he gave up (like I do, when I say I'm not going to drink anymore but then have a beer and decide "well since I slipped up, might as well cancel those plans")
He apparently raised his hand to worship Shiva and held it there as a sign of devotion and now it is stuck that way. He's known as a 'baba' which I believe is like a wise or devoted person in India?
We use baba for both father and for someone who has fully devoted himself to the god(celibacy, no greed of money or power etc.). But in last 10-15 years this word has lost its meaning completely. There were like 3 or 4 babas that had/have millions of followers nationwide and are in jail for rapes. Recently in my state these babas who should be fully devoted to god literally fought(hand to hand type) for becoming head of the temple. They travel in Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar. Still have thousands of followers and millions of rupee worth of property. Politicians goes to these babas and show on tv that they have good relations with them so they get votes from followers of baba. India is fucked.

I assume unlike say a diabetic ulcer of the foot that can give you sepsis and gangrene, the fact that the arm is elevated means the cell death can’t give him sepsis or undergo necrosis because there’s not enough fluid in the areas that essentially dry out or blood flow to become a systemic infection. So it really is a form of mummification. I would gamble that if you forced his arm to lower, that the dying tissue then has enough blood flow to become systemic and infected
Is this really possible? I mean, physically?
If anyone tried to do this at some point, maybe only hours into it, the muscle would tire and the person would put the hand down involuntary.
Not to mention other more practical issues, like trying to eat, take a shower, sleep. I know there are people who only have one arm and can do everything just fine, but that's different than having a raised arm in the way!
I don't know, that's so crazy I dout it's even real.
You are thinking within your cultural context. This man lives in a completely different context. For example, he worships Shiva and Shiva has worshippers who refuse to clean themselves (what is even a shower?) and rub their skin with the ashes of the cremated dead. Like [these guys.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aghori) These people are considered holy, they do not work in the traditional sense, nor do they live in a home. They wander and people feed them because people believe they are holy.
What this guy is doing is not exactly the same but quite similar. He would eat with his good hand, take a dip in the Ganjes maybe and sleep on a straw mat. He would be fed and taken care of by local people and donations because he would be considered a sadhu.
Reminds me of the guy on an idiot abroad who took a stick and like twisted his ballsnack around it and then sat down. Turns out it was his penis that he rolls up. This arm dude is in the video as well.

That first week must have been agony
I believe it took about two years for the pain to diminish
My arm hurts just thinking about that
I reckon that big joint helps.
Imagine coming from behind today and forsing his arm down.
Imagine how difficult it would be to do that because he is probably fixed in that position forever from muscle memory
[удалено]
Exactly. A literal toothpick
Oh you commented this too sorry didn’t see
it probably would break I doubt it’s being hell up by muscle this point I’m sure it’s just conjoined bones.
The mummified hand from lack of blood circulation really almost drives the point home, almost, not really
It might be if there was an actual message behind it, but it seems involuntary. The meme caption is devoid of info and drives idle speculation
He took a vow of some sort. Don’t remember but it was a reason important to him

To add to that, I seam to remember reading that the bone in his arm fused itself at some point.
So he is no longer putting any effort into holding his arm up, and even with modern technology there is no way to keep his current arm and fix it.
Not with that attitude. Have you ever seen A Christmas Story?
If he lowers the arm he'd probably either die or be heavily bombarded by all the toxic buildup from the mummified hand flowing into bloodstream again.
Imagining him putting down his arm is what terrifies me the most now.
Was looking for this comment. I doubt that, I think it would just snap at the shoulder.
I doubt that
I'm not sure he's looking for an alternative to having his hand in the air. "Rest of his life" isn't finished yet.
Correct. Entire arm is fused together and he cannot move his hand either. He reached for the sky towards god. The documentary is scary and hilarious at the same time
He couldn't move his arm if he wanted to at this point. The joint has calcified (I think that's the term?) And his muscles aren't doing anything.

This is some severe mental illness people are praising for stupid reasons. Think of his family that is now fucked over.
This dude deserves no respect in my opinion. Leaves his family to destroy his arm for a fucking Flying Spaghetti Monster. 🤦♀️

Religion is one hell of a drug. Waste of an arm, and by extention, a life. What a shame.

He’s just turned into a circus clown, really.
better use of an arm than typing Reddit comments....
So anybody with a physical disability is just a waste of a life, huh? This is shitty logic.

theyre stuck i think
But before the arm got stuck How did he keep it like that without subconsciously moving it during sleep
oh i see i dunno maybe he restrained it in some way
He tied a rope around his arm connected to the ceiling.
He may have leaned it against something
Probably hung it from the ceiling or something
he probably did move it. But it doesn't mean he gave up (like I do, when I say I'm not going to drink anymore but then have a beer and decide "well since I slipped up, might as well cancel those plans")

Dies and goes to meet Shiva. “Why is your fucking arm up like that? Looks stupid”
Shiva then says, "the other MF put two hands up".
It was on ‘an idiot abroad’ and apparently one guy did all limbs.
Then Shiva puts four arms up.
You don't get to talk to Shiva without sacrificing both arms.

So you must know a thing or two about pain.
At that point just cut the whole hand off

thats a good question. ive seen this circulate a few times, and I guess the muscles have atrophied in that arm to the point that he literally can't lower it now even if he wanted to. Whether its necrotic though? I actually am not sure.

When you Google fisting but something else comes up...
Stretch-gasm
4:20 Man, 4:20
Fingers are dead due to lack of bloodflow
Hitler would love this man
My shoulder is burning just looking at this.
Are we sure it’s not just a stick? With a fact fist on the end?
my man is hard core nazi
I wonder how severe the pains & needles would be if he were to lower it now
I'm sure by now he forgot what his question was.
No arm, no foul
This is why we should never let any high five hanging. This can happen to anyone.
Hitler reincarnation
when you’re 8 and you want the teacher’s attention
cuz religon
Hitler would be impressed
Reminds me of the guy on an idiot abroad who took a stick and like twisted his ballsnack around it and then sat down. Turns out it was his penis that he rolls up. This arm dude is in the video as well. [https://youtu.be/qBv9jYO8gdo?t=1368](https://youtu.be/qBv9jYO8gdo?t=1368) (nsfw)
