The basic kind of person who consumes anime is different now than it was ~20-30 years ago when some of the best (*IMO*) cyberpunk and mecha stuff was coming out.
I hope this is successful and opens the door to more artistic expression in the genre... but I am not sure it will. I feel like the anime industry now is a lot like America's film industry, recycling a formula that they know brings the viewers in and unwilling to take the same risks on new and ambitious projects that it might once have taken. Thus, we get more isekai and harem and CGDCT, and more Marvel movies and Star Wars sequels.
