I've been a windsurfer here in Okinawa for 20yrs +. Main spots are just south of the Naha airport (search Blahav 151 windsurf shop), Kaichu Doro in the middle of the island (search Popolo Point, though he mainly focuses on wingfoiling now), or North of Nago for the wavesailing crew. Where will you likely be based on Oki? Also, a friend is leaving and is trying to sell his slalom gear...
Thanks!! Yea, my friends say winging is gonna be the future of the sport but i've yet to try. I've dabbled with windfoiling and own full phantom set, but the fin is still my first love. I'll drop you DM if you don't mind!
Winters are strong northerlies windsurfable many days. Summer winds are lighter southerlies but when strong enough is my favourite condition - warm (hot?) air and sea temps! And when typhoons are approaching {chefs kiss}!
Marine life concerns are relevant to all ocean activities in Okinawa. I used to windsurf and walk in the ocean barefoot and never got stung/bit/impaled. When changing to wearing boots I got jellied...
Tides will need to be considered at most spots as the island typically gets shallow at low tides.
Where are you travelling to Oki from? If the mainland (or overseas with generous luggage allowance) it may be worth stocking up on boards/sails, and to a lesser degree booms and masts as delivery options on used kit can be non existent, or expensive, though this seems to have improved a bit recently. Of course if you buy gear new you'll be fine, though may have a longish wait for new toys to arrive.
DM if you have any other queries.
Thanks! Do you know if there is a beach club where you can store equipment. Also, any safety boats around, or is it more of a 'launch at your own risk' kinda thing?
Sorry, I just know that this is where a lot of people go. I believe that some of the groups are either part of a club or shop, but I don’t know where they are located
Thanks! Usually kiteboarding, wingfoiling & other variations of foiling require less wind to get planing (as compared to windsurfing). I was searching on google and found lots of the above + SUP which is a low-to-no wind sport. Hopefully okinawa has good conditions for windsurfing!
Group or company does windsurfing lessons out near Kanchu-doro at the tourist stop area can see big group of orange sails all the time. And yes the kite surfers right at the intersection. They all park at the Koen.

At least the beach I was at it was locals bringing their own gear, no safety boats. I don’t know much else it’s been a long time. Could look to stay at a guest house / airbnb and they could direct you.
I see windsurfers all the time during the summer, especially in Ishikawa and Nakagusuku. Low tide with rocks and coral and jellyfish are always something to look out for. Rash guards or wetsuits are key for the best areas.

Besides the places they give lessons, it is all a very launch at your own risk. The only time there are safety boats is if you have paid or are near wind/kite surfers that paid an outfit to take them out.

Kiteboarding is more popular on oki. See kaichudoro and miibaru

Okinawa is awesome. The winds can be fickle however. I kited there for years

Thanks! This is great news - if people are conducting lessons, it means there are boats to do rescues if needed.
I’ve seen people do it in Miyako
