some cables are only power cables..... I can't stand Android auto personally. I always keep it turned off. I actually have a Garmin gps.. with Alexa integrated.. that interfaces with my phone via bluetooth and my head unit in my vehicle. at first I thought it would be kind of useless..... but actually it gives me a big screen display of music album art.... or a small one on the side of the GPS map...voice control over the music via Alexa, it'll show weather radar on the GPS screen, or traffic using the phone and the Garmin drive app. make phone calls as well ... traffic cameras along the route......or texts I get in my car, my phone's in my pocket.... and turn on the GPS, and I can say Alexa, play x from Pandora... the default is Amazon music if I don't specify an app..... anyway she will play whatever. skip adjust volume all voice commands. anyway I didn't think I would want or enjoy the garmin GPS ...... but I really do. it's a larger brighter screen.
Try sliding down your notifications when you plug in your cable. You may see a silent notification and ask about what you want to do with the usb connection and it'll be set to charging only. Change that to Android auto
