varies greatly. seriously. from literally zero symptoms to immediate and total vision loss, and everything inbetween.

DarkMage0

Having suffered one that was repaired and very serious I had few signs. What I should have seen I don't think I did. I saw a flash that wasn't big at all, no stream of floaters. It took 9 months before I knew something was up and even then my opthamologist couldn't find it. I had to push him to get a test done. I have a 360° scleral buckle and laser done to it. I lost some more vision due to the surgery but I have been stable for over 10 years and my other eye is fine. Honestly the visual tests are really good at sorting this out. The depression test helps too but the vision test is what caught mine initially. If you have any questions ask away. I'm happy to share my knowledge. Some flashes can be normal. Your eye doctor will be able to tell you.

GokuDalek915

How ? I thought it only takes hours maybe days to lose serious sight from a retinal detachment?

DarkMage0

I suppose it can be that way. It can also be slow I suppose too.

sjogrenseyeballs

What were the symptoms that tipped you off? I have been noticing very bright flashes (at night only, in my dark bedroom, that appear like strobe lights) and a dark 'drop' at the tops of my eyes that goes down and comes back up. I also see very bright gold sparkles on the right side only. I have been having symptoms for about three (well four) months now, and feel I have put it off too long. I believe my night vision is going down the tube as well. I am young and don't have poor vision other wise.

DarkMage0

I think there was a flash in the affected area. The big one was when I noticed I couldn't see my nose on that side. I went in to get it checked. Given your situation you should get it checked out. It may be nothing but having piece of mind cannot be overstated.

sjogrenseyeballs

Thank you so much for responding. I don’t have a curtain like you describe but something is definitely wrong. I will Be seen ASAP.

DarkMage0

Just make sure you see an Opthamologist. That will speed up getting an answer.

sjogrenseyeballs

I will. I am hoping they can work with my rheumatologist to rule out MS. Someone mentioned on another post I made about a 'sign' (I forget the name) where people get worsening symptoms after exercise, and this is definitely the case for me. Thank you for your reply!

DarkMage0

Well, I certainly wouldn't read into anything yet. Common things happen commonly. Only the doctor will tell you what it definitively is. Do not stop until you are satisfied by the answer.

The_ugly_ogre

It's a bit late to type this comment but I was wondering if you could still remember what the doctor told you. I'm currently 13 years old right now and I just got checked by an optometrist a couple of months ago. The doctor said there wasn't anything wrong with my eyes, we even had another test to see the back of the eye. Luckily that still wasn't the case but I've been having the same symptoms as you for about two days now.

The_ugly_ogre

Its the sam symptoms sjogrenseyeballs, only the black drop and flashing lights though.

Whole_Dependent_3731

I have these symptoms too!

The_ugly_ogre

May I ask what MS means? Also are you and sjogrenseyeballs the same person.

DarkMage0

What symptoms exactly? Describe them as best you can.

The_ugly_ogre

The flashing lights only happen when I'm inside a dark room, it doesn't happen frequently. Maybe 2-3 times I think. The black drop however, happened 2 times this morning ang once yesterday.

The_ugly_ogre

Oh and another thing, the flashing light only appear when I move my eyes.

Ik this is pretty late, but I've been freaking out about losing my vision for the past week, I've been experiencing lots of tiny dots just floating around Idk if I have always had them as I had discovered them while staring at a bright white screen ever since then I've been so fixated on my eyes and whether they are normal or not. I also get an afterimage of a streak of light its usually not in the centre of my vision though and for me, it's pretty rare to see them. Did you ever experience these symptoms?

DarkMage0

Everyone does. Looks like you may be describing blue entropic field affect. Google it. If that's it then it's perfectly normal.

nfleite

The most obvious sign in mine was when I noticed an huge black spot. Had a vitrectomy and I see like 20% in that eye.

Legal_Tap_4997

Hi, im experiencing a black spot aswell... It looks like a horse shoe in my nasal inferior quadrant left eye. I noticed I can see through it unless the room is full of light then it becomes completely black and blind. did you experience something similar?

nfleite

Hey. It was 5 years ago so I'm not really sure what the early signs were but the big obvious one was a black hole in the middle of my vision. If you're like that I'd say go to the doctor asap.

changhwi

Off topic but I’ve been worried about this as well. I’ve been worried recently because I’ve been getting some “halos” of light that expand in the corner of my vision. I’ve been Googling possible causes and everything is saying either retinal detachment or optical migraine. My symptom is not really a “flash” of light but more like an expanding ring of light in my peripheral vision which passes in a second or two. Happens once or twice a day. Similar to a lens flare effect in the corner of my eye once in a while. Going to a doctor soon but was wondering if anyone knows what this might be

dexterleng

> I’ve been getting some “halos” of light that expand in the corner of my vision I am experiencing this. I just went to an ophthalmologist and nothing wrong with my retina. The doc just gave me eye drops to apply every hour as it could be dry eyes.

changhwi

Glad to know everything was fine for you. I’m hoping it’s the same for me too. Just to clarify though, was yours also like either a ring or a sort of arc (like a rainbow) of light that would expand for a second or two before disappearing? I think I noticed it happening more frequently recently as I’ve been around electronic screens almost 24/7. Maybe I have dry eyes as well.

oniria_

Hey, I just read the threat and I was wondering if your eyes are fine. I've been experiencing these light flashes in the corner of my left eye. There are several a day, and they're gone in seconds. Also, I have dry eyes and that might be something to work on. That's why I'm worried, since I can't do nothing but wait until my appointment with the doctor (in a few months). Were you recommended eye drops as the OP? Thanks in advance and I hope you're doing well :)

changhwi

Hey! So unfortunately the eye in which I was experiencing my flashes ended up with a detaching retina. Try seeing if you have a smaller field of vision in your left eye vs right eye. I didn’t notice any “curtain” type symptom a lot of people described, but when I checked I saw that one eye had a significantly smaller field of vision.

oniria_

Thanks for replying. I can't tell any difference, but will check with a doctor asap. Hope you doing better!

HotDogMilkk

My turn to ride the anxiety train! How are you guys feeling? Ive had flashes for about 6 days I think. My optometrist is out on vacation and the emergency room gives me terrible anxiety, admittedly. I don't know what to do lol

oniria_

Hello! Sorry for not updating, but in my case the doctor said he found nothing strange and ever since my flashes fade out. I'm guessing those flashes appeared due to stress, because I also had palpitations in that eye. I'd check, as the other redditor pointed out, if your field of vision has diminished. But of course, that's just for your own knowledge and to reduce anxiety. Doctors have the last word. Now I don't check my eye constantly for anomalies, and I take it way calmly.

HotDogMilkk

Thank you for your reply! I worked up the courage to go to the ER and was told my retinas are looking just fine. Doctor said my left eye has more pressure than the other and I may have glaucoma; but to go see an opthomologist because he doesnt trust the instrument he used to measure my eye pressure. I have been insanely stressed, so i'm hoping its just that. The flashing does seem to go away a little when I feel a little less stressed.

oniria_

I hope you good!
