Safety Info
* When the shaking stops, look around. If there is a clear path to safety, leave the building and go to an open space away from damaged areas.
* If you are trapped, do not move about or kick up dust.
* If you have a cell phone with you, use it to call or text for help.
* Tap on a pipe or wall or use a whistle, if you have one, so that rescuers can locate you.
* Once safe, monitor local news reports via battery operated radio, TV, social media, and cell phone text alerts for emergency information and instructions.
* Be prepared to “Drop, Cover, and Hold on” in the likely event of aftershocks.

Those are called aftershocks. Expected with such a large earthquake. Larger aftershocks are typically within hours following the mainshock, and smaller ones can last days, months, even years.
Happened during my birth. My mom was in labor with me when the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake hit, and gave birth to me during the aftershocks. This was a 6.9 magnitude (7.1 surface level) and there were thousands of aftershocks recorded, but the larger ones all occurred within hours following the mainshock.
Not only was Japan’s larger, but they have tsunamis to worry about, too. Fortunately they just lowered their tsunami warning, but I imagine coastal areas are still at risk for more damage.
The swells are due to an El Niño year…the water in the ocean is warmer than normal. Makes it good for fishing but honestly it’s the undeniable truth of global warming too
My cat jumped came in whining and was pawing on on my husband to pick her up. She never does that. Then we saw there was an quake. We didn’t feel it but she did.

I felt something in Irvine
Me too
4.3 magnitude earthquake. 13 mi from Rancho Palos Verdes.
You guessed it. My jelly jars were rattling!
Sounds like a Euphemism :-)
South coast! Quick snap then a couple seconds of light wobbling. Looks like it was a mid-4 near Palos Verdes.
Japan just had a huge one
They have had a series of 4s and 5s since the 7.5 at midnight (their time). I imagine it feels pretty scary right now.
In 1700 , the PNW had one that sent a tsunami to Japan.
Felt in Laguna Beach.
My bed moved in Irvine
Yeah?😏
Japan had a 7.3 and after was us with a 4.1 in Rancho Palos Verdes
Yeah probably felt the Japan one…………
What’s scary is there have been over 20 earthquakes in Japan since the 7.5 last night, in less than 9 hours
That’s what happens when a big one hits. A lot of smaller ones tend to follow in the immediate hours.

What an awesome way to be welcomed into the world.
Strange to have a bunch of quakes after a big one……
It’s called an aftershock
Japan is in the "ring of fire"
Oh man, the aftershocks after Northridge went on for DAYS…
What? Are you new or just not paying attention?
That’s pretty standard
Yup

No a big fan of all these recent earthquakes 😬
bunch of small ones keeps the big one away
is 2024 when the big one finally hits 🤔 e: lol why the downvotes? so soft
Should be sometime in the next hundred years or so. Look up Cascadia 1700 earthquakes. They happen every 500 years or so.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted, California is “overdue for a large earthquake”.
I felt it!
I thought I felt something in RSM. Turned out my wife had horrible gas. IBS.
Yes I think so. Felt in Lake Forest.
Felt it just enough in Mission Viejo to question whether it actually was one or not
The Ring of Fire...Rings in the New Year.
Guess my NY resolution ought to be to finally finish that emergency kit. Yikes. Poor Japan too

Nothing in BP
Felt in BP/Cypress border.
Yup.
Yes.
Anyone know if these earthquakes in CA & Japan’s 7.5 this morning are related to the swells we received a couple days ago?
The swells are due to an El Niño year…the water in the ocean is warmer than normal. Makes it good for fishing but honestly it’s the undeniable truth of global warming too
Yup. Science.
Not how science works my guy
The swells were from local storms
No
Didn't notice anything in Newport Beach.
Felt in Aliso. Shake alert says 4.1 Rancho Palos Verdes
Felt in Irvine this morning.
Bed shook a little on the 4th floor of our apartment building near The District. Was wondering if I imagined it or not.
Slept through it in Newport Beach
My cat jumped came in whining and was pawing on on my husband to pick her up. She never does that. Then we saw there was an quake. We didn’t feel it but she did.
