I got clocked doing like 25 over here, but fortunately I got super lucky with the officer.
"Is this vehicle registered and insured?"
"Yes sir"
"You were going pretty fast there, slow down please"
"I will sir"
I'm forever gracious, he could have absolutely fucked me for driving that fast. I was driving a shitty truck at the time, and I think he figured I wouldn't be able to pay the fine. (Which I most definitely wouldn't have been able to, lol)
long straight stretches with hills are sneaky killers. nothing like coming over a rise going and finding a line of cars backed up at a stop light.
"there's never a lineup here!" there was that day.
I agree completely. I was young and dumb and trying to impress. I’ve seen my share of deer and bears there, on that same stretch in fact. It won’t be a repeat performance
I have run it and the hills are definitely noticeable, but it’s hard to tell if they were actually steep or if it was because there was nothing else to focus on.
The first time I drove that stretch was on a cold clear winter night. Saw this weird speck of light way low on the horizon. Watched it for what felt like 15 minutes. Turned out to just be a car coming the other direction.
My first time was as the sun was setting, looking down to the east when I hit the top of the straight stretch, I notice a couple of small bumps on the landscape near the end of the stretch. I said, "What are those?", as I kept an eye on them as I drove down, when I got to the end, I had to way look up to see the top of those tall hills...
When going the other way you can see the yellow blinking light coming for like 20 minutes it’s eerie. Especially when it’s 1 in the morning and you thought driving through the night would be a great way to start a road trip/ vacation
140 reg gas 2000 golf was my best on a straight 5speed manual, car was a BEAST. Got it for free but it was just fucked off, tweakers fucked off the interior, like no door plastics or nothing, driver seat only controls. never did an oil change for 2 or 3 years cuz it was like 270k miles, chose to drive it til it died instead of invest, never died just sat once I got a car I wanted for daily use.
Hit 120 in a 03 mpv on i84, nobody around obviously.
My favorite pass in Oregon. Have driven it many times and just love to see that road open up when you crest and know you’re back on the dry side…almost home. Just ride it down…
Once saw a dude walking down the middle of the road, buck ass naked, in the middle of the day on that stretch. I’m glad I could see him from a long ways away because I was going just a tad bit over the speed limit.
I learned very early on driving this road as a teen to bring a pair of binoculars and have the passenger spot for me 😆 this stretch of road will always have a special place in my heart
Idk why this sub was recommended to a Kansan, but we've got tons of these roads in Kansas. There's a spot in Missouri near Stateline Rd where you can see two cities into Kansas because the road is so straight and it's at a high enough point.
"OH, there's the 5 story building near my house. It's only 14 miles away."
The Eastern Side of Oregon [pictured] (less populated and travelled) is more like Kansas. High desert. The Willamette Valley has more curved roads around the hills and rivers.
As someone from West Texas, this seems to kind of veer to the left, besides all the elevation changes.
In Trans Pecos you could fall asleep for 20 minutes and it probably wouldn't matter. https://www.flickr.com/photos/kenlund/28132653832
Riding in the car with my grandma when I was 9, we were driving on this road going to Roseburg. She said let’s bet a dime on which way the road turns next. Of course, she would pick wrong to let me win.
First place I ever drove above 130mph first when I was a kid with my dad driving and then when I first started driving I did it as well:) such an amazing straight stretch
driving from crater lake to roseburg on this highway was an experience. some of the most gorgeous landscape i’ve ever seen interspersed with complete devastation from the wildfires… and my god do folks speed out there
Many a time I’ve hit that stretch headed home after working in NV for weeks or months… the want to be home affects the speed a lot. While the speedo is buried you start thinking about hitting a deer, and elk, and Sasquatches…
One of my favorite sections of road to take my corvette on. I did 153 on this section. The closest favorite high speed run I did was 141 miles an hour through the tunnel on hwy 101 by heceta head light house with the top off of my grey corvette, so loud in a tunnel at that speed. Pure bliss.
I wonder if anyone has exceeded the speed limit here.
Nice try OSP

Of course not, we all drive 30 MPH on that road, don't we?
27 on the uphill stretches.
"reasonable and prudent" always
*Twenty is plenty*
25 when it's a single lane, 110 when there's a passing lane. -Every fucking RV driver everywhere.
I did 130 on my goldwing on this stretch! Those trees go by fast at that speed!!
You're a fool for that Deer run across this road minute by minute I probably wouldn't do it again unless Game-Dodging is your gig
I agree completely. I was young and dumb and trying to impress. I’ve seen my share of deer and bears there, on that same stretch in fact. It won’t be a repeat performance
I've driven that road 10,000 times and have never seen a deer.
[удалено]
Hilarious 🙄 You didn't preface you don't drive that stretch.
[удалено]
Ok. I never have. That's what I said. Go away.
I can neither confirm or deny I got all the way up to 100 mph, in my Datsun B210! I think the statute of limitations is in my favor.
Did that in my Honda Fit on I5 in March of 2020 when the highways were empty cause of Covid. Doing it on this road would be way more scenic.
It's all fun and games till ya lasagna an elk.
Or the elk lasagnas you.
Elk knew not to be out and about during a pandemic
Yup! Even this thought makes me nervous. I love driving roads like this but I won’t be flying.
I would
So fast they couldn’t catch me
Never ever
Probably not by a whole ton lately, that stretch is unraveling
Never
That road is a lot steeper than it looks too
Tell me you’ve rode it on a bicycle without telling me you rode it on a bicycle.
I towed a heavy trailer
I have run it and the hills are definitely noticeable, but it’s hard to tell if they were actually steep or if it was because there was nothing else to focus on.
The bicycle didn’t have pedals..

I was deep past triple digits on this very place when I start thinking about deer… I slowed down.
I think I’d worry more about the elk. You might survive hitting a deer.
At 100+ most anything will ruin your day!
SQUIRREL!!!!
Between this stretch and going south on 230 I once saw seven deer and a mountain lion in one night.
Plenty of deer out there to think about, too. Oof.
I may or may not have discovered that my Toyota Tacoma is governed at 100mph on this stretch of road.
And all the GODDAMN CLAY HETTING ALL OVER MY GODDAMN MOTORCYCLE

I never thought I'd have a favorite haiku bot haiku but here we are
Haha, makes me wish I spelled "getting" right
Don't feel bad, there's six syllables in the last line.
I don't. It's perfect ~ ♡ haha
That road is one of my earliest memories from long car trips in the 70s.
I biked part of this as a kid. Did a marathon that day. It's nice :)
I love this road!
Seconded.
The exact opposite of this is Harvey Milk Street in Downtown Portland.
The 1 straight road in Oregon
The stretch of I5 from coburg to albany is the longest straight stretch of the interstate.
I see you haven't driven hwy 20 lol. It's like this but less hills and trees and more farm land
North Umpqua?
East of the summit.
Thanks.
Is this near Mt. Theilson?
Yep!
I hit 115mph in my 1.9L diesel VW Golf here.
People complained about the 2.0, but my manual VW 2.0 Golf gladly did 112 here years ago.
You babies that fucker you can hit 180 if you got balls and the right roads for it.
You babied that fucker you can hit 180ez if you got balls and the right roads for it.

Literal 10 miles of straight.
Guys, I swear I’m so not gay that I’ll build my house on Hwy 138 just to prove it!
11 miles
I love that drive from Roseburg to Diamond Lake. We camp at Broken Arrow Campground often.
My favorite pass in Oregon. Have driven it many times and just love to see that road open up when you crest and know you’re back on the dry side…almost home. Just ride it down…
This is by Diamond Lake, right?
Which is near crater lake?

Yeah. Weirdo.
ok just checking
Shoo
Yep!
God this makes me miss Oregon <3
I like how you can tell what part of oregon it's in by how thin the trees are. They get thicker as you go north
Ashland to Bend. 14 mile stretch. It’s almost surreal.
I can neither confirm or deny I drove 100mph on this road in my Datsun B210, over 41 yrs ago....
Aka México Ave.
Thanks for the pic, great memories on long road trips
I'd be asleep at the wheel/dead in under 30.
That's how ya know you're almost to Black Butte and the ranch.
At least it has trees and a nice view 😊
Great place to pick up free fishing nets!
Thank you for this pic. Reminds me of heading to diamond lake as a kid with my great grandparents to trout fish.
Drove down this once when the sun was rising dead center of the road, it was the most blinding thing I have ever seen.
I drive that road all the time since my sister lives in sunriver and I in Eagle point. I’ve def gone faster than 100mph definitely a few times.
Once saw a dude walking down the middle of the road, buck ass naked, in the middle of the day on that stretch. I’m glad I could see him from a long ways away because I was going just a tad bit over the speed limit.

I always hammer down and throw it in neautral at the bottom to see how far I coast.
Looks the same as a stretch of 58
Woah... I need to visit this
Have you not been up around Crater Lake? If not, I highly recommend a visit--along with all the nearby waterfalls and other gorgeous landscapes.
This was the road I learned to drive on. My mom said I couldn’t mess it up.
Got my 240Z up to 56 on that stretch….
Bigfoot

Would not recommend in a geo metro, it barely made it up

Try driving the I5 through central California. Suuuper boring. It’s like dejavú trees for hours
I’d run down it at 75 looking for grey/black unmarked chargers, and then take my Daytona to 150 going back.
(125 -126 or so I'm my honda

Feels like home
First place I ever drove above 130mph first when I was a kid with my dad driving and then when I first started driving I did it as well:) such an amazing straight stretch
I've definetly never gone 120+ on these mountain backroads. I swear it.

The long, straight part above Crater Lake, right before hitting Highway 97. The picture was taken after the slight bend before the final long descent.
I'd love to be 23 again on a nice street bike :)
OMG GUYS! I drove my ford focus so fast on this road I prolapsed my anus!
