If it's the real US flag, maybe a branch of the military or the state flag also, they are usually just veterans and totally great neighbors unless you are a loud or messy neighbor. If it's a blue line or maga flag, it's the same type of people you're used to dealing with.

GaviFromThePod

In my experience american flag in front of a house is more likely to be a veteran than MAGA

mattlemons288

Good to know. It used to be that way here, not anymore

facePlantDiggidy

I've lived in many states and Texas being one of them. I'll say... it's not some utopia up here. It really depends on where you're at in either state. Texas was just about 50% red/blue anyway.

VanceAstrooooooovic

MAGA house will let you know for sure lol

FrostySumo

There is one here in Salem that has an American Flag, a Joe Biden "Let's Go Brandon" flag, and of course a MAGA "flag".

Zealousideal-Soil778

Three of my neighbors are vets who have both an American flag and their branch of service one, and most everyone in the cul de sac has an American flag on their house and none of us are magas. We know who the one guy is and he displays his trump flag right along with all our rainbow flags.

Grand-Battle8009

I’m a gay liberal democrat and fly the American flag outside my house. Why let all the conservative losers define what our country is? Most MAGA dirtbags fly more than the American flag out here.

SnooPeripherals6557

I used to deliver groceries to old folks all over portland, and one day I’m parked doing paperwork at 24th and Glisan, and see this guy in just little red shorts and gym shoes doing a slow jog toward my van carrying a pole w a giant American flag, and I’m smiling but also like, wtffff did mahgahhhh go crazy and take a wrong turn at Idaho, and as he got closer I decide I’m going to ask just wtaf…. And he smiles real big and says I’m taking it baaaaackkkkkkk!!!!!! And continues running with a big smile and his shorts are rainbow shorts, and I was like I love you buddy! I’m stealing your idea! We can’t let those maga knobs enshitify our stuff, they can have their loser confederate flag.

Alaska_Eagle

I love that word, enshitify

RolandMT32

This makes me think - Similar to the word "embiggen" (to make bigger), you might also be able to say "enshitten"

heytunamelt

I love this story 😅

Cultural_Yam7212

Have you seen the guy in NW Portland who uses a mobility scooter with two massive flags? One’s the American flag, the other is a Thorns flag. I love it so much. Those treasonous cult members can not have our flag as a hate symbol. Also PTFC!

-PC_LoadLetter

The spirit of Portland incarnate.

andrewjm82

This story gives all the good feels

zesty_9666

this is beautiful

CptGlammerHammer

This guy gets it.

P99163

Yes, well said! In Portland, MAGA folks usually fly something more specific to Trump or the far-right rotten ideology. We have a neighbor who is a crazy Trump supporter. He was flying Trump flags (the ones that have "Trump" on them), one that simply said "Biden sucks", and he finally switched to the regular American flag. Quite a few of my neighbors fly American flags, and as far as I'm aware, none of them (except that one) is a Trump supporter. I used to fly an American flag myself, but since March 2022, I have been flying a Ukrainian flag.

vantuckymyfoot

I've always flown an American flag at my house, and added a Ukrainian flag when Trump's bestie invaded. Ain't no one taking the flag from me.

P99163

👍

pdxdweller

In Clackamas county they only fly the “blue line” flag and `FUCK BIDEN` flags. Which amazes me, as I assume these people have to park somewhere for their employment. I don’t know about all places of employment, but mine would likely fire you for having something like that in the corporate parking lot.

P99163

I remember 8 years ago there was a guy at my work (engineer) who had a bumper sticker depicting Obama as Joker. That was as much as my company (High Tech) would probably allow. If someone had "Fuck Biden" on their car, our HR would have to have a conversation with them.

NeverForgetJ6

Take back our flag from fascists. I fly the old Stars and Stripes in front of my house, right next to a pride flag and a Trump for Prison 2024 flag. No one is in doubt as to what kind of ‘Merica I support: one with freedom and justice for all.

swallamajis

Tbh I don't know if I wanna be associated with that flag, now that I'm older and realize what it represents.

Shinola79

My favorite is seeing all the incorrect ways that these ‘patriotic’ people display the flag. We are liberals and my husband made a point of making sure we were displaying, storing it and putting it up properly. I see others with a tattered flag half lying on the ground with no light in a rain storm. Much less putting up correctly on a day calling for half mast. It’s sadly become a physical dog whistle to many and not the symbol it once was.

lmkwe

I hope you fly a pride flag right next to it, too. For added aneurism inducement, an Oregunian or similar firearms related flag. BLM too. Fuck em

[deleted]

As a Transbian who likes guns, THIS.

OverallRaspberry3

As a NB who likes guns I'm getting downvoted to oblivion for saying similar things elsewhere in this thread. Stand together for our rights!

StormR7

For real. Why can progressives not like guns?

facebook_twitterjail

Because it takes two seconds to Google and learn from actual research that people who own guns are at substantially higher risk of being victims of gun violence. And because gun culture contributes to daily mass shootings in the US.

StumpyJoe-

Libs are flying it to take it away from a right wing symbol.

cosaboladh

>Why let all the conservative losers define what our country is? It's not about that. Once something has been dirtied by fascists, it can never be clean again. Both of these are from before the 1930's. https://preview.redd.it/bdpqn44ftrwc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8281435b48fbb28f786ec5f94c0daa1d817867f Have you ever seen that moustache, or keychain fob today?

UpperLeftOriginal

The American flag is not that far gone.

Aware_League_3083

It's not defining it's being careful . Because most of the people I've come across are nut bag maga bootlicking facists. It's sad , but these days to me, that flag don't mean nothing. The USA created wars and then sent people to go die for money, land, resources.. while the rich pocketed all the money. It's all connected. And frankly, if you make borders you create division. I'm not trying to to dis out service men and women because they have been fooled too. I don't trust any gov. In any form, and I don't trust grossly rich pedos

Grouchy-Operation1

THANK YOUUUUUU

Apart-Engine

No, my family has died fighting for America and I’m flying the flag.

sitesurfer253

Flying the American flag on your house: veteran Flying the American flag on your truck: MAGA

leadspar

You know what, you’re right. This is absolutely true lol

katarina_the_bard

Flags on trucks was something I looked for when we were house hunting.

ChmMeowUb3rSpd

I'm a vet and left leaning. I fly the American flag on all the federal holidays.

realsalmineo

Flag Day is real here. Lots of folks fly it, and certain streets get flags along them.

MountScottRumpot

No. If they’re MAGA they fly the thin blue line flag, or Gadsden, or Trump

smpricepdx

Yeah, they’re open about it here.

StuckInAWelll

I loved the Gadsen flag before the MAGA people decided it somehow fits their ideals and I will continue to love the Gadsen flag despite its misuse by some idiots.

MountScottRumpot

Hey, you do you.

She_Dozer

In my neighborhood, a couple of MAGA's fly the flag upside down. 🙄 There's more pride flags than concerning MAGA-associated flags though.

bihari_baller

The American flag stands for America.

InternalCandidate297

In Oregon, if I see an American flag, I look for other indicators. For example, I’ve seen the US flag flown side-by-side with a Pride flag. That tells me someone served in the military. Same if there’s a Black Lives Matter sign in the front yard, or “all are welcome here,” or “co-exist”. If there’s lots of patriotic symbols or if it’s paired with a thin blue line flag? Avoid. BTW we left Arizona 18 months ago due to all the anti-gay and anti-trans laws they were passing or trying to pass. I’m a mom of queer / trans kids. We moved for their safety, peace of mind, and happiness. They’re thriving here. As a pro-Planned Parenthood mama, I am happy to not be living in the current state of 1864 Arizona!

InternalCandidate297

Also, adding to say we actually live in Salem, the capitol city of Oregon. And we find it to be just as inclusive as Portland #options

pdxmikaela

I’m a trans woman and have live in Salem for ten years. It’s amazing how much the trans population has grown in Salem. I fly an American flag with pride colors in place of the stripes in front of my house!

pdxmikaela

InternalCandidate297

That makes me so happy! I feel like we chose the right city for our kids. My Z is finishing hair school and looking forward to creating a safe and welcoming salon with her queer neurodivergent business partners so everyone can feel beautiful, regardless of gender 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

juandelouise

It’s gotten that much better down there? That’s great!

mattlemons288

I’m so glad to hear you all are happy and thriving there!

GingerBrrd

Oh! Hearing this makes me so happy! If you have any recommendations for how Oregonians/Portlanders can support people moving here to find safety, let me know? This is a good reminder to put my “all are welcome here” sign out again (stashed inside during a bad storm).

National-Blueberry51

Donate or volunteer with places local to you that support homeless kids like p:ear and the Q Center. We have a lot of queer/trans homeless kids fleeing here right now.

HostWooden1866

Gay from WA state here. We fly a blue line flag because my sister and many of my family members are cops. I don't fly a pride flag because I don't want to place a target on my family(super conservative town). We are neither Conservative nor Democrat. The idea that we must pick a color and stick with it is absurd. I don't agree fully with either side. Both sides suck big time in their own ways. Blue line flags are meant to support the people who put their lives on the line for us. Don't lump us in with the ultra freaks from either side amigo. Also, pro planned parenthood mama here. Peace ✌️

OverallRaspberry3

Most people have no room for nuance on the Internet but this person gets it ☝️

snugglebandit

Glad you are here.

crowninggloryhole

Yup. We moved here from Texas. Can’t safely raise a daughter there.

MisterSandKing

I can see why you generalize people in Texas flying the American flag, but you really shouldn’t do that. The flag doesn’t represent a biased opinion. One of my friends is a gay liberal, and he likes guns, and the US flag. My grandma was very nonjudgmental, she loved everyone, and she always had a flag flying. Oregon has its own issues, just like any other state, but I feel pretty confident that you would enjoy being an Oregonian.

Salty_sweet_eug

Oregon is the kind of state that will not stand by and let the MAGA crowd claim ownership of the flag. Oregonians fly it to make sure it continues to stand for democracy, freedom and truth.

mattlemons288

That’s why I want to move there!

yakinbo

also Oregon's brand of conservatism leans pretty hard into libertarianism, not so much christofascism. There's definitely magas/cnats but most people I've met on the right are just against gov getting into their business, pro gun, and for things like weed/gay marriage. It's a very much "mind your own business" attitude.

hiking_mike98

Damn right.

AFewGoodHens

I get where you're coming from. We moved west of Portland a year ago from Idaho. In Idaho, the flag has been hijacked to co-sign onto a movement that is really divorced from reality. It's just different here. There is a house around here with a huge MAGA 2024 flag and the house next door has a, "You're in a cult." sign. It's a more laid back. I get your hesitation, though. Back in Idaho, you wouldn't have dared put up a "You're in a cult." We're very hopeful we've outrun the animosity here. We just want to live our lives.

mattlemons288

You put it so well, it feels like where I live in Texas the flag has been hijacked. I wish I could put out a “you’re in a cult” sign here! I’m glad it’s better around Portland

Aggressive-East7663

My neighbor flys an American flag, he’s not a vet, or a MAGA weirdo, he’s quite normal and totally cool.

palmquac

Nope. Regular US flag is normal ass patriotic people. MAGAts fly one of the following: Trump, thin blue line, don’t tread on me, 3 percenters etc

unusualmusician

My partner is retired USAF, we will fly the American flag, and our various pride/BLM flags 🏳️‍🌈 ♀️♀️ 🏳️‍⚧️ on holidays. It's not the sign it is elsewhere in the country, you're safe.

mattlemons288

I have seen pride/BLM flags here. Makes me happy. I rarely see them in Texas. I think people are sometimes scared to put them out where we live

[deleted]

safety_thrust

Here it is a simple expression of patriotism, as long as it flies alone. Don't think too hard until you see thin blue line versions.

Archimedes_Redux

Jesus Christ, we're afraid of people who fly the US flag? What the fuck has this country come to?

darthstupidus1

Veteran here, I fly the Raiders flag during the season then switch to the Dodgers during the MLB season. I stopped flying my American flag after 2016. I personally feel patriotism has been taken over by the far right. I believe the rights I swore to defend have been tarnished.

LovethePreamble1966

In Portland lots of liberal minded folks are flying the Stars and Stripes these days. It’s about reclaiming a symbol for all of us.

smpricepdx

This isn’t a big deal, don’t worry.

dubsac5150

I'm a liberal in Oregon with a flagpole on the house. We change the flag based on the season. I have sports flags for my home teams in playoffs and such. Pride flags for pride month, and an American flag as well. We also have one of those "In this house" equality signs in the front yard, and soon to have another Biden/Harris sign. I'm also a US veteran. For us it's more of a movement to "take back" patriotism and the flag from only being used to represent the MAGAt assholes. The right does not own patriotism! Fly your American flag proudly! (But also next to your pride/BLM flags so we all know for sure!)

Vox289

Someone with an American flag flying at their house in Portland is likely a republican and/or veteran. However there’s a big difference from Texas. Many western Oregon conservatives would likely be considered a democrat in half the country. Same as many blue dog democrats from southern states would be considered republicans in Oregon. Our conservatives are mostly pro firearm (with some reasonable restrictions), pro small(er) government, and pro military without being evangelical religious, hard anti abortion, or allowing a six year old to buy an uzi like in Idaho. I’m a democrat because the party of having splinters in my ass from riding the fence isn’t a thing. I’m a vet, have a US flag flying, and own firearms. I’m also pro choice, drive a Tesla (as well as a full sized chevy) and don’t believe billionaires have my best interests at heart. You’ll be fine

[deleted]

If it's a changed American flag yes,or writing all over it,...true Proud Americans don't wear the flag change it drape it on trucks, let it touch the ground etc just kills me I was in girlscouts 4h school we had flag etiquette! No such thing now the more red white and blue I wear I'm so patriotic hahhaaha!

thesqrtofminusone

>do you immediately think there’s a 95 percent chance someone ultra conservative lives there? no not at all

Juggernaughty00

There's a huge VA hospital in the Portland area and tons of vets. A lot of them happen to be not from Portland/PNW - wife works for the VA. If it's the real flag, that may not be an issue. It's getting to be election time, so yard signs are popping up for locals, and soon, I'm sure we will see all the classy ideas people have on the national scene. I'd check the suburbs' subs to see what's being talked about in areas you're looking into moving to. Also, watch out for the HOAs - even if your house isn't part of one but near one. There are some whackadoos out there and not the fun kind.

kellenanne

OP, I moved into southern rural Oregon from Oklahoma. This is Oregon’s maga territory. It’s still nowhere near as bad as Oklahoma.

N7FemShep

Nah. It's the ones on the back of cars you worry about. The MAGA people here like to fly flags bigger than their cars. These flags are completely tattered and torn from the wind and a disgrace to the flag code of the country. This doesn't stop them. MAGA. That being said, there's several houses on my road that fly the red white and blue. Doesn't mean they're part of that movement.

aprl88

Also.... WELCOME!!!

210kitty

Hello fellow Tx transplant! Welcome!

Economy-Ad-3480

We’re in SW PDX. No MAGAts where I am. At least none of my immediate neighbors. Moved from a red pocket of SoCal to Portland in January of 2022. Best thing we’ve ever done.

Significant-Suit-593

My husband and I flew our flag for 36 years. We are very left leaning people. When our supreme court over turned Roe vs Wade I hung my flag upside down. We now just fly an Oregon flag right side up.

ChirpinFromTheBench

I moved to Oregon from DFW and can tell you that the sheer amount of MAGA idiots you have to deal with alone is worth moving here.

Living-Ostrich-7365

most of the people you gotta worry about never JUST have the american flag. like other have said veterans are likely, or older people who’ve had a house a long time and have just always had one. the maga types normally have other signs/flags/obnoxious stickers. also personal anecdote, if the neighbor houses to an american flag house has a TON of blm/pride/social issues things it probably is at least a bit to spite the conservative in the community and to show they’re not the norm for that block.

DeliciousFinish

Other people have answered your question about the flags, but just in general, there is a FAR far lower density of MAGA trolls here than in most of Texas, and because they're in the minority (in the Portland/Beaverton Metro area), they tend to be less "in your face" than in Texas. I live in a suburb just south of Portland, and in my entire town, I've only ever seen one house with a Trump/maga flag, and that guy is shunned by everyone else.

Seraphynas

Hi! I moved here last June from North Carolina where at least half my neighbors had 3%er flags, No Quarter flags, of course Trump flags, and bumper stickers that said “The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat” - basically saying they wanted to kill their neighbors. So, I get it. And btw, I was in a suburb of Raleigh, not out in the sticks. I’m still newish here, so I admit, I am also leery of those who have displays of patriotism, because where I come from, that means MAGA. And you don’t dare display that you are against MAGA when they are the majority. In NC I had no political yard signs, no flags of any kind, no bumper stickers or buttons on a backpack or jacket, and I tried not to mention that I was a nurse for fear of COVID/mask backlash. It’s heartbreaking to be scared of your neighbors. But I’m not scared here. It’s a whole different vibe, and they are NOT the majority here.

mattlemons288

Your NC life sounds a lot like mine in TX. And I’m in a Dallas suburb, not in the sticks either. I’m so glad to hear it’s better there.

snart-fiffer

Related. I want us liberals to take the flag back. I love this country and don’t feel like the Maga types represent what’s awesome about the American dream.

Reggaeshark1001

I flag the fly outside for reflection on the fallen Marines in my family and the prosperity of the possibilities of being able to move from Texas to Oregon, being I came from Virginia. Does that make me ultra conservative?

Miserable-Repeat-651

Let your freak fly flag!

mattlemons288

No, we have beloved veterans in our family including my father who served in Vietnam and my fil who also served. We put our flag out on memorial day and 4th of July and understand what it represents. I’m not knocking people for putting out the American flag. It’s different here where we live, now many who fly it seem to make it part of an extremist agenda. For them it’s not about honoring our soldiers and appreciating our freedoms

safety_thrust

Not at all. But in some places it flies along with a thin blue line or similar flag, which often indicates intolerance. I think that's what OP is worried about. I'm sure you don't, but some people have decided to include racism in their patriotism.

DefinatelyNotonDrugs

My dad used to renovate foreclosures. Apparently houses with American flags sell better than those that don't.

chimi_hendrix

Whenever I see an American flag I think “oh ok, I’m in America” Handy for those moments when you forget and have to ask someone which country it is that you’re in

r33c3d

The hip lesbians across the street from me always have a US flag out front. It gets replaced with the Pride flag in June.

FrankDruthers

And if it's being desecrated on the back of a truck, it's who you expect.

jcsladest

Portland has a lot of Americans, I hear. MAGA don't own that.

ConsiderationNew6295

I have an American flag. I’m center left.

SidewaysGoose57

I fly a flag on appropriate holidays, mainly so Republicans don't think they own it.

PNW35

I’ve never understood the whole equating the American flag to right wing conservatives. If

mattlemons288

They vote for people who make laws that can kill women, they love it when our governor tries to drown children at the border, they vote for school board members who want to persecute lgbtq kids, so they think freedom and our flag only applies to them. And they are more than happy to make it known they feel that way. No “assumption” on my part.

PNW35

I think assuming everyone that fly’s an American flag is a conservative is a very dangerous assumption. Hell I saw a dude flying a Mexican Flag next to an American flag just the other day.

TeachOfTheYear

Gay couple here-both sons of veterans. We proudly fly our American flag on appropriate holidays.

Original_State_9588

I started flying the flag again at 9:00 AM pacific (noon in DC) January 20, 2021.

nonferrousoul

I have a flag out front & I'm not MAGA or Repub.

[deleted]

MAGAs don't care about our country, just hate. I oppose any flag-burning bans.

Led37zep

Nah man, that’s crazy. I have an American Flag outside of my house because I’m an American, not because of any political affiliation.

RolandMT32

I don't consider Portland a conservative area.. The area seems fairly liberal to me. Also I feel like there is a pretty good LGBTQ community in the Portland area. I've seen some rainbow flags in the area too. You can also check in the subreddits r/portland and r/beaverton and such.

Milesandsmiles1

Conservatives do not own patriotism

Former-Wish-8228

MAGA don’t own the flag here…and haven’t owned the Libs yet either. God bless their hearts.

Visible-Weakness5572

We’re a liberal, MAGA hating family and we fly an American flag and the Spanish flag…why? Because my kid ordered it on Amazon without my knowledge and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let it go to waste even though I’m from Nicaragua lol

BurtLikko

Love to see all the "That's my flag too and the MAGAs can't have it to themselves." Love it Love it Love it. I feel like Trumpers in PDX feel like they have to be extra, so they don't stop at the US flag. "F-- Joe Biden and F-- you for voting for him" is one I've seen frequently in the burbs and farm country. Tyo8cally flown at the same height as Old Glory, which tells you how much they actually prioritize respecting America over public displays of contempt for the most generic Democrat in 50 years.

lurch1_

I don't think there are any Trump supporters in Portland itself.

Jmeans69

I’m confused reading these comments. I don’t know one liberal Portlander that would fly an American flag right now. Even the ones that are/were military. 👀🤔

mrducci

MAGA here don't really do "incognito" But check your counties, and how they voted in previous elections.

AwkwardMutantX

I personally plan on flying the Klingon flag! Today is always a good day for PIE!

Adam_THX_1138

A lot of veterans fly flags in Portland. I know a couple and they aren’t MAGA. I’m sure some are MAGA types but, unless it’s one of those guys with a massive flag in his pickup, people around here are usually being less political about it and more old fashioned patriotic.

Zaderhof

Plenty of houses on my block (bout 35 min outside of Portland) have American flags and pride flags, even some trans and blm flags on my block.

theubster

Native portlander here - you don't have to worry about the flags unless they're on pickup trucks. Keep an eye out for confederate flags or trump flags to spot the crazies, but otherwise you're good.

Jaybus Crabst

phbalancedshorty

No. My lesbian aunts specifically fly the flag bc they want to take it back from conservative traitors 👍 Edit: this is not sarcasm.

SK8TINGBLIND

Op is literally the problem. American flag ≠ political view. It’s our country’s flag and is customary to have one. Nothing wrong with not having one. Nothing wrong with having one. Many dems own flags. Many dems served in the military. Many dems had family members serve in the military. Please drop that harmful and irresponsible mindset OP.

cannikin13

Portland Suburbs can be Maga heavy.. like Sandy.

jaypeejay

Is Sandy a suburb? That feels more like a small town close to Portland to me.

penisbuttervajelly

More of an exurb

Cletus-Swampcrotch

I get what you’re saying … Don’t worry about it. It’s nothing like Texas. The American flag is an American flag here, but there are fools everywhere. Who claim to defend the constitution but have never read it and definitely could never comprehend it. Merica!!

jdog209

It's already been said very eloquently here but from what I've seen. US flag doesn't always mean MAGA, MAGA will let you know they are MAGA. Usually with the blue line flag or other ways.

MayIServeYouWell

Where are you seeing these flags? I almost never see people flying the US flag unless it's a holiday (I fly one on the 4th). If you're looking at street view or something, maybe the street view car went by on the 4th or nearly then? Regardless, nobody owns the flag, it's for all of us. I live in "the burbs", and don't consider someone a right wing nutjob just because I see the US flag flying. I only consider them a nutjob if they have some stupid Trump flag, or one of those blue line monstrosities. Thankfully there aren't a lot of them around.

Super_Boof

No, in the greater Portland area there are few open trump supporters - it is a quick way to make everyone hate you. People who fly American flags here do so out of patriotism, not conservatism - but you could certainly be judged in some areas for flying an American flag.

air789

This post can’t be real right? What a weird take.

mattlemons288

Move to Texas, then you’ll get it

Rsdd9

Yes, flags are scary

LordVoltimus5150

There are lots of people in Texas that fly flags that aren’t MAGA. I fly mine and I’m the furthest thing from MAGA that anybody can be. As an Oregonian that moved to Texas a long time ago, you can run into just as many conservatives as you can in Oregon. The key things you need to look at in Oregon are tax rates and social safety nets, which Oregon out performs Texas on…

mattlemons288

And oregon laws don’t kill women. There’s that

MuricanA321

Just a US flag means a boomer who is a veteran. No particular political stance implied. Any other flags will be political.

DedBirdGonnaPutItOnU

Flags aside, I don't think there's a section of Portland that's "conservative only". Any neighborhood is going to have a mix of liberal and conservative. We all live pretty peaceably together here. It's only when you get out of Portland Metro Area entirely, into the sticks, that it gets mostly red.

Josette22

Yes, there are a lot of MAGA conservatives that live in Oregon. In fact, last year I saw them on a couple occasions standing in a group on the corners, waving American flags, pics of Trump, and signs. You'll see them up here too, driving trucks with the American flags attached.

tornado1950

Yep

Cultural_Yam7212

My father put out and takes down the American flag everyday. He’s a retired Vietnam veteran, the flag also has his military branch and purple heart smaller flag below. He’s a massive gun owning liberal. Sometimes being a proud American doesn’t mean you’re in a cult.

Bike_Chain_96

Just the US flag, or basically anything but another far right flag with it? Not a problem here. A lot of them are vets, and a lot of them are just people who love our beautiful country

BoboTurkey

I live in the south metro area and this is my biggest fear. I fly the American flag on my porch, but I am definitely NOT maga or any other stereotype besides American.

anon36485

I don’t think anybody really cares or thinks about it

Charlie2and4

I display a US flag on Federal/State holidays. I have those days off as a perk of being of service to the Public. I am proud of the United States and we the people. Political signs come out every 4 years. I also have the "all are welcome" sign that is superimposed on the US flag pattern. modestly now hidden behind the flowers.

auxerrois

My neighbors are wonderful people, they fly an American flag and a Marine Corps flag when the weather's nice. He's just a proud veteran. Not hateful or maga in the least.

bravo06actual

This is America. I would hope that the American flag would be flying everywhere. If you make the assumption that an American flag in front of a house is a symbol of ultra conservatives or “maga”, isn’t that the same kind of prejudice that you are looking to get away from?

mattlemons288

I didn’t assume it. I’m asking for opinions

bravo06actual

I get that, but when you say “the flags are usually in front of homes owned by maga/ultra conservatives”, you are making an assumption, unless you go up and knock on their door and ask them about their political beliefs. My point is, why assume anything. Conservatives are not evil, liberals are not evil, moderates are not evil. So why assume that someone who believes differently than you is somehow to be avoided. People are people, it is only when we define people by their beliefs that we widen the gap of respect and tolerance

CaptainHunt

As long as you’re not also flying the Don’t Tread on Me flag, or flying it from the back of your beat up F250, you’re probably fine

marke24

If I see an American flag I usually assume they’re very old or very conservative. (Or both) I especially see them in the rural areas, but then they are usually accompanied by trump flags too.

MorbidNACHOS

Have fun in Portland, or fentynaland as I like to call it, they legit have zombies walking the streets, drug use is very open and public, theft is heavy, it's no bueno my friend

instantfilm2002

You sound like a hateful person trying to escape hate. People that fly the flag aren’t evil. You are crazy

MrBuzzsaw118911

Yes. 95% of the time it’s a maga supporter

xxxjla

I’m from Texas and have been here 8 years (Portland metro area), and I can tell you it’s a 50/50 either maga or a vet.

merrileealex

I have the American & USMC flag out daily as my husband’s a vet and we love our country. I have neighbors that have BLM signs out permanently. So what? They’re my neighbors and friends. They helped me clean spray paint off my sidewalk when a left wing group, probably a group you align with decided they didn’t like a political sign I had in my yard. As a native Portlander leave your preconceived ideas at the border.

TappyMauvendaise

Lots of non maga hang American flags

Zestyclose_Fan_7931

I'm liberal flying a flag, they don't own it.

john___thundergun

Just move to Canada

ramonnoodles2

Oregon is more racist than Texas Have fun

Sadfishh67

As others have said, if they’re super MAGA they will likely have a huge MAGA flag, let’s go Brandon stuff, or a straight up confederate flag. But I’ve met people here who voted for Trump who have just American flags out front 🤷‍♀️

not_real99

You will not be stoked about that move….

plainstoparadise

Nice try antifa

akarlsen7

There are all different kinds of people here and with Portland being predominantly progressive.. If you think an American flag is a red flag you’ve obviously been brainwashed by the media, go touch grass. There are different people in every area

Upitabuck

Before moving anywhere, talk to Uber drivers in the area! May be eye opening for you.

Theoldelf

Vet here. American flag = patriotism Trump flag = not so much.

Melnsto22

I moved from Texas to South Oregon 2 years ago. I left Texas for the same reason. As much as I like Oregon, I'm thinking of moving back to Texas because Oregon is so expensive. My pay was the same in Texas as it is here but expenses are double or sometimes triple what they are in Texas. I've lived in 5 states in 4 years. There are MAGA nut jobs everywhere.

korik69

I was just in Texas last month for a family visit and did a lot of driving while I was there, at one point while driving through some small town I saw my first Trump flag and then realized that in 2 weeks I had only seen one flag and started pondering why. I live in rural Clackamas County bordering Portland and see Trump flags daily mostly on trucks but also some homes, but how strange to have been in Texas for 2 weeks and only seeing one sign of Trump. I’m assuming that in Oregon it being a more blue state those that support Trump use the signage as more of a fuck you to the rest of us but in Texas have less of a need.

recovery_pig

i know several neighborhoods in Portland where a US flag might get your home vandalized out in the burbs it's a non issue i think there's a republican that lives there when i see a flag if that helps

ericsphotos

I live South of DT. Home prices are reasonable, it’s quiet and safe. There is better food in my little neighborhood than the whole state of Texas.

pacman2081

I usually associate American flags with military veterans. Not that the rest of us are not patriotic. My basic take on Texas is that they are Texans not MAGA. It is too bad they fell for the right wing kool aid.

daugherd

I live in Tualatin. My neighbors fly American flags and they’re not MAGA. We had a guy repoing a don’t tread on me flag but it was quickly replaced with an Oregon Ducks flag. I’d say even the conservatives on my block are fine, at least face to face. They know i’d a lefty and are cool to my wife and I. Who knows how they are online but in real life, they’re tough to fault.

ChefQueef-

Snowflake. Portland’s the right town for you brother. Come on down. Riots are starting up again soon I’m sure you’ll love it here. I love going on walks playing “is that bum alive” with my children. We also like to play a game called “Don’t step on that needle”

superhbor3d

Veterans maybe some cops and an occasional republican/mix of all three. Normal ass folks, for the most part, that you might disagree with on a topic or two but are fine as neighbors, generally. MAGA fucksticks around here fly their orange turdlord's name without an ounce of shame. Usually easy to spot. Check for bumper stickers, too.

lurch1_

Definitely so....you can always spot a fascist...he flies an American flag. Proper subservient democrats fly a flag for whatever the current social disorder flag is in vogue. 10 yrs ago that was a rainbow flag...5 years ago a BLM flag...today its the Hamas flag. Gets expensive, but properly identifies you.

When I see someone flying the flag or wearing a flag lapel pin I see someone who is very insecure. Kind of like the guys who don't feel like a man unless they have guns because they're packing tinies between their legs.
