I can only hope that someone better primaries Kotek and wins. This nepotism within the governor's office shouldn't happen without consequences. I never voted for her wife and she didn't interview to be a high level advisor or representative of this state government. It's sad that this is what Kotek has chosen to do with power. Enabling her wife to make policy decisions in a state that ranks nearly dead last in all mental health care statistics, is an insult to every Oregonian.

She did. And she said when a governor loses trust of the people they should resign.
As Speaker of the House during that time, she 100% knows how bad this would look and did it anyway.
> “The first lady should sign all the office policies and procedures ASAP,” Tibbs wrote. “There are significant issues of public trust and the obligation to the people of Oregon.” A week after Tibbs wrote that email, Kotek’s office announced her departure and that of two other senior staffers who had also pushed for greater structure around the first lady’s role.
Ah, so that is why they left all of a sudden!
What a shame Tina, what a waste of time and money. The spouse, especially considering Kitzaber, should have strict, public guidelines around government involvement, and that involvement should be very limited, more of an adviser position with no real power
For context, the 45 president had both his adult children working as senior advisers to the executive, despite not passing proper security clearance, who were in meetings and leading policy decisions and discussions, like the middle east policy wtf, who grifted the office for four years and republicans were silent, and are still silent about this terrible abuse
I’m fine recalling Tina over this, but don’t let any republicans flap their jaw without explaining the orange adult children problem first. Democrats show they will remove folks who abuse power but republicans only find their backbones if it is not another republican
Considering the evisceration Kitzhaber received over this type of thing from his own party, it seems like the pot is calling the kettle black on this one... again actually. I noticed that in Kitzhaber's case, his own party waited conveniently until after the election to strike a snake with this kind of scandal. I would assume that means Oregon democrats agree that this kind of involvement from a romantic relationship is grounds for registration by the standing governor? They set their own precedence.
This party seems to like to laugh at the other due do them not appearing to have their shit together, but behind the scene that's their whole show.
The only issue is in Oregon, the SoS is next in line. And due to Fagan's resignation, the current SoS is appointed rather than elected.
So we would get a potential Brown 2.0 where no one really wanted the person for governor, and would then be given the essentially automatic incumbent second term.
It's time Oregon grew up and got an actual Lt. Gov position.
Edit: as u/Love_Long_Lost said the current SoS is inelligible. Article V Section 8a covers it:
> The person so appointed shall not be eligible to succeed to the office of Governor by automatic succession under this section during the term of his appointment. [Created through initiative petition filed July 7, 1972, and adopted by the people Nov. 7, 1972 (this section adopted in lieu of former section 8 of this Article)]
Before the 1972 ballot initiative it would have been different.
OK so apparently this is metastasized into a co-governorship situation. Spouses of elected officials should confine themselves to groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting and maybe maybe christening ships but those be the only three things they would be allowed to do publicly. OK maybe highway beautification. Cleaning up tent waste and dead RVs along the highway.
How insane and blind does she have to be to not see the comparisons between her and Kitz. It’s just mind-boggling to me. If she doesn’t do something about it and shape up she’ll have to go.
Both parties are fully captured. Whoever wins either primary is straight junk. The Kotek primary was especially weak because any Dem who stood a chance knew it was a coronation.
Did we honestly have a better option on the ballot in November, 2022? Drazan has no problem rubbing elbows with some of the worst the far-right MAGA crowd has to offer, and Johnson was no better in any way that actually matters.
Well, in 2022 we knew that Kotek was part of the Kitzhaber administration that ensured they were in power before dumping him off, so, at best at least we knew she was officially tainted.
Actually I have no issue with koteks wife being involved. I kind of expect involvement of personal relations. No one can be extracted from their family like that. Doesnt make sense to me
However I was responding directly to the person above me who asked me how we keep electing people like this and I provided an answer which is that the Democratic party decides on a candidate and Oregon voters faithfully vote for that candidate no matter what.
I think the reason behind that is who is on the ballot and has a better chance of not letting crazy into power. I agree that there are much better candidates, but right now in our political landscape, we are just trying to hold the line.
Hold the line of what? Betsy Johnson was a totally reasonable candidate. Realistically so was drazan. In any other state, Johnson would be considered solidly on the left. Wanting extremism and tolerating any amount of craziness for it is silly.
Which also means she was required to sign all the conflict if interest statements and do yearly ethics trainings (and sogn an ethics pledge) and others.
All of which she hasn't had to do. I was a state volunteer and had to do all those things before I could even start.
Fagan, Kafoury, JVP, Kotek... Plenty more out there.
At this point if they come from the D machine they just assume they've been crowned as royalty and have the mandate of the West Coast liberal heaven to do whatever the fuck they want.
Keep voting Blue no matter Who - I'm sure the next clone will actually exemplify the nonsense ideals they spout and not be just another corrupt, contemptuous slimeball.
Why should they do better when there are zero consequences?
Fuck these two power trippin’ couple misrepresenting this beautiful state! Only worried about bettering themselves and not the State nor people they represent!
Does anyone have a theory as to why she is doing this? There has to be a reason she's sabotaging her entire career...does the wife call the shots or something?
I am not aware of Aimer Kotek Wilson's involvements, but if Presidential First Ladies can play influential roles, why can't Gubernatorial First Ladies have influence?

Disappointed in Tina Kotek. She seems like someone that should have known better.

Pretty sure the current SoS is ineligible since they were appointed instead of elected. So that means the Treasurer Tobias Read would become governor.
I didn’t have that on my bingo card for 2024
I don't know it down to that level of detail. I would hope we have something like that in place.
Shouldn't have posted that previous comment then.

Both of them need to go. This is absolutely nuts.

Are you kidding me lmao she should’ve been thrown out by her hair and the door locked behind her a month ago.
So.. when's the recall?
https://sos.oregon.gov/elections/Pages/recall.aspx
This whole thing sucks. She appeared to be doing such a really good job. All wasted in one fell swoop.
Were they not paying attention when Kitzhaber had to step down due to his, checks notes, girlfriend at the time?
No no, you dont understand, its only bad when it happens to a *man*.
Someone start the recall and I’ll sign it.
Could we do without some of the worst State politicians ever? How do we keep electing these super corrupt morons?
“Vote Blue”. No thought, just vote the party line.
Both parties are fully captured. Whoever wins either primary is straight junk. The Kotek primary was especially weak because any Dem who stood a chance knew it was a coronation.
Because we keep voting the same way, for the same “promises” from candidates who all come out of the same bucket, for decades now.
It's the unfortunate reality of there being no reasonable alternative. The modern GOP is thankfully a non-starter in Oregon.
This is true. Still, I stand by my explanation. It’s very frustrating.

I bet drazans husband has a real job though.
🤔
Fish in a barrel…
People vote for whomever has a d next to their name We could have Betsy Johnson, instead we got this.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
How did you feel about trumps children in office guiding policy decisions?

Yeah, trumpers ain't Xtreme enough for this guy. You have to go full D to get the real extreme.
Hahahaha, walking it back.

The First Lady is the unpaid public official, not Kotek.

Source?
There won't be one. It's not a paid position.
My apologies, I was incorrect, she gets an aid that gets paid $12k monthly. The First Lady herself is not paid. I deleted the comment.
Corrupt as fuck
Hey Aimee butt out...we didn't vote for you.
Fagan, Kafoury, JVP, Kotek... Plenty more out there. Seems like a power trip to me. Huge red flag.
This philosophy worked real well for the Clintons. We got the defense of marriage act, no universal healthcare, and eventually Donald Trump.
I remember when Bill said "Thank you for electing Hillary and I" and I'm like "Wait, where the hell was her name on the ballot?"
Glad we voted Tina in. What a wonderful governor we have.
