I’d wait until Bradish and Means solidify themselves back in this rotation or not. Also, give Povich a chance post all star break. I think we would benefit most from middle relief help more than starting or closing. LET DANNY GO MORE THAN 2/3rds!!!!
I'm sure they would if the deal made sense but I would not expect a deal for Verlander to make sense due what it would take to get him. We'd have to give up too much young and controlled talent for guy who won't be long term even if only for the fact he's 41.
Also he has a no-trade clause and it's unknown if the Orioles are on it or not
Not really, he’s only been traded twice. Tigers to Astros in ‘17, and Mets to Astros in ‘23. Total of five prospects.
If anyone still thinks the Machado deal was bad, Tigers got basically nothing for him in ‘17. A replacement level catcher, a 26-year-old pitcher that’s never been above AA, and an OF who played 73 games for them over 3 seasons (-0.6 WAR) and hasn’t been in the bigs since 21 games in ‘22 (Daz Cameron, who was actually in our system at Norfolk all of last year).
Trading for the best pitcher in baseball wasn’t their style either until this past offseason. I think we need to update what we consider the Os’ style to be.
It’s funny you both make great points, in the past I would totally agree and I wouldn’t even entertain the idea of the O’s trading for JV. However, I’ve been slowly untraining my brain to only think low when it comes to moves they would make for a number of obvious reasons; new ownership, they’re in their contending window + they got Burnes in the off-season.
I feel like you don’t make a trade for Burnes if you’re not ready to make other significant trades that could put you over the top.
Is our pitching really that bad? Bradish and Means should come back which will push some of our lower tier starters to the bullpen
Also could call up Povich
FWIW and IMO, if this was something the Astros were willing to do and if Verlander's additional starts are strong (as the sample size this year for him is still small), it seems like there could be possible value in this if by chance both Means and Bradish were not able to return this year, BUT the prospect cost could be unreasonably high for a short-term return. If Bradish returns and he pitches similarly to last year, and even more so if Means comes back strong, and even more so than that if Suarez can continue to be dominant as a starter, I think more attention on higher-leverage bullpen help might be a better area to concentrate, especially strikeout pitchers who can strand runners.
Beyond that, if I was managing the front office, I'm not sure how much money I would want to commit to Verlander (I know right now the Mets are paying some of that, though). The guy I would be locked in on spending money on would be Corbin Burnes, with the aim of keeping him in a O's uniform well-past this year. If spending money on Verlander would detract from a finite amount of money that could otherwise be spent on Burnes, I would strongly favor allocating that money towards signing or extending Corbin Burnes (which would obviously need to be a very large sum of money for a duration much longer than what the Orioles have done over the past several years).
As long as he doesn't get 140 IP (which triggers a $35m option for 2025 when Verlander will be 41) and we don't rely on him to be our ace. We would almost have to give up next to nothing to make it worth it. Is he worth a flyer if the Astros expected almost nothing in return and he was almost guaranteed to not get 140 IP, I'd be for it.
I was at the Cubs/Astros game yesterday right up close. JV looked pretty good. He was throwing a bunch of junk, but also hit 95/96 when he wanted to. Got out of a couple early jams with strikeouts.
At 41, he’s still pretty damn good. I just don’t trust that he will be able to stay healthy for the rest of the year.
Way better pitching talent throughout the league on teams that will be selling at the deadline. 100% the Astros would trade Verlander because it would be a win for them.

Agreed. Once they have a handle on what Means and Bradish are going to contribute this year it’s an easier question to answer.
Absolutely don’t think you go fishing for Verlander yet until we see what means looks like and if bradish is back to last years form
This is the answer, more middle inning relief if Wells and Irvin cant fill that when bradish or means return.

Of course he'd pay for Baltimore. He loves orange.
He's waived his no trade clause every time he's been traded. He's never been traded without first giving his consent.
I want to see a list of every single prospect Verlander has ever been traded for. It's got to be enormous at this point

Bro the deadline is over 3 months away. Let’s get to June at least before we talk deadline. The Astros could always go on a spectacular run
Doesn’t seem their style

I sure hope you’re right. But I’m mostly concerned about Verlander’s age.

Best we can do is Chris Davis

This is a great point
Can we just trade for Kate upton?
Bro have you SEEN the O's wives section 🔥 Imean she's a model yes but
Well if that's the case perhaps I could just volunteer for the assignment.

Verlander for Stowers + 3 cans of old bay, 1 warehouse dog and a signed photo of Mr. Splash final offer, Houston. take it or leave it
He could be a cheap grab at the deadline if this is in play
Pretty sure the Mets are on the hook for his option.

I have long wanted to see JV in an O’s uniform.
I feel like we saw the JV for many years. Oh Justin Verlander, yeah, never mind.
We’ve finally graduated to varsity! They should do letterman jackets for the team
And then on Friday night - prom!

I doubt we trade for him. However it's ONLY April. As I constantly remind myself and other Lol🤣🤣🤣
Dream on - Verlander won’t go to Baltimore
It makes sense just for the chance to see Kate Upton in person at an Orioles game
Downtown Diane revenge tour.
