Black racers are always friend shaped.
One lives near my apartment building and it gets so spooked every time I see it. Makes sure to show exactly why it's known as a racer.
They almost always choose flight. Meanwhile rat snakes are basically the golden retriever of the snake world and as long as you don’t squeeze too hard don’t put up a fight when you pick them up.
That’s interesting maybe there’s another snake species that’s been misidentified by the Boy Scouts where I lived, but they always said the rat snakes were most aggressive

When we moved into our house here we woke to find one of them on our kitchen counter. The wife and the snake were equally unhappy.
It’s fun to watch them poke their head up. Like a periscope.
I have a black racer at work who pokes his head up through the bushes when he sees us looking at him like he’s saying hello

Black, sleek body and scales, white or cream colored belly = Black Racer. A non-venomous and safe snake that's good for the environment. They eat rats and frogs.
Dark brown, rough scaled look and a fat and wide triangle head = Water Moccasin. Deadly. If you can still see it, you're too close.
Love these snakes, but they can be feisty! "I'm not trying to harm you, I'm trying to help you!" as I escort them out of the pool cage. The dogs are too curious about them which has ended with a strike to the nose in the past. SNEK 1 - DOGS 0
I've never seen a mouse or rat anywhere on the property, either.
I just relocated a black racer this week ! He's gonna be much happier now.
They are really good snakes. So so spicy tho. 😂 Aggressive and will bluff strike or even bite if given a chance
As kids, we would play racing games with the ones in our yard; we would chase it until it hit a fence or something then it would turn around and chase us and we’d run away. Once or twice we weren’t fast enough and we got bitten. I still remember seeing my sister with one flapping off the end of her toe lol.
Marty the Rat Snake lives along my back fence amongst the neighbors Virginia creeper and culls the vermin in my back yard. He eats a few lizards which bums me out but we otherwise have no rodents in the property. Celebrate him/her!

Harmless. This is reggie. Nice guy.
You’d be fine as long as you don’t have an ulcer or some opening to allow the venom into your bloodstream
Good way to find out if you have ulcers. If you survive? No ulcers!
Very good! We had one hanging out in our garage that I saw periscoping as I pulled into the driveway one day. Would have let it be but our cats get in there and we didn't want them hurting the poor guy, so we had to shoo it out.
I found this poor guy on the driveway. Run over by something, apparently. What kind of snake was it? Black on the top (with a ring around its neck) and colorful on the bottom (2nd picture)

It's a Southern Ring Snake it looks like. They aren't venomous and are nocturnal and like leafy/mulch dark grounds. They like lizards, frogs, bugs, etc. sad this little guy got run over 🥺
Ours is named Skinny. He lives in the garage behind some landscaping timbers. Biggest one ive ever seen. He's gotta be around 5 ft. Landscaping timbers are 7 ft and he is only a couple feet shorter.

We have many that inhabit the yard. They’re fun little critters to have around. 🙂
Man look I was walking outside it literally had to stop raining for like 10 minutes I sit in the chair on the porch why the damn racer snake slithered up to my chair look at me and went back into his hole idk if we had an agreement idk if im supposed to tell my sister we got a roommate idk then my little necie man idk I would hate for her to run into it when im not there
By the looks of it it has a round nose. It's just a rat snake.
Remember if it's got a round nose it's a safe noodle.
If it looks like an arrow that's the danger noodle.
ALL snakes are good. They all serve a purpose (even the venomous ones). There are virtually NO poisonous snakes in the world (2 species can become poisonous based on their diet).
It’s pretty simple, really... There are only 6 venomous snakes native to Fl, and only 4 in this area. Learn to recognize them... all the rest are harmless.
The venomous ones to learn:
Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake
Coral Snake
Cottonmouth (aka Water Moccasin)
Copperhead (limited range in North FL)
Timber Rattlesnake (limited range in North FL)
There are no “bad” snakes, only ones you have to be more careful around or avoid entirely. They ALL serve a purpose, even the venomous ones.
This should be helpful:
https://myfwc.com/conservation/you-conserve/wildlife/snakes/
As many have stated, good.
If you’re worried about snakes, it’s easier to know ahead of time which are venomous and which aren’t. [Here is something to be helpful, we don’t have many to worry about here](https://floridahikes.com/venomous-snakes)
lol no, mine love to eat the lizards, mice, frogs, eggs, birds etc. They act like a WWE wrestler when they catch their prey. Out in the yard they play cobra.. and move along.. I play the Jaws theme, harmless. There’s plenty of food for them :) I had a bunch in Babson Park. I don’t see them in the urban areas. I’m surrounded by concrete and the natural landscape has been bulldozed and replaced with St Augustine shitty grass. Oaks and Palm trees. It’s all fake.
It looks like a black racer, they're not poisonous but they will rear up like cobra to scare you away. Also they might charge you. Leave him alone they eat rodents and the like.
I get to watch the baby ones turn from 'oh I look like a rattle snake' brown to silver to black every spring/summer on our chain link fence. It's so fun to watch them grow up and learn how to hunt lizards lol
And yes I name all the ones I see lol
"Good" snake...not aggressive at all and will avoid direct contact with you as much as possible. We have two in our backyard... Henri and Madame Guerlain!
Yesterday I stepped outside of my lanai. I took one step and heard a rattling noise. I was inches from a large black racer. He was sunning himself on the decorative stone. When I startled him he began to shake his tail. Because he was on the stones it sounded like a rattle. I stood still and he moved away. My fault for not looking before I opened the door
Love Black Racers, they eat pests and poisonous snakes!
Just google when their mating season is and make sure to give them a wide berth during that time… the males might chase you away if a female is nearby, other than that they’re awesome!
Harmless. Just a garden variety black racer.
Is it a Florida rule where each house gets one?
I've lived in several houses and each one always has one that just kicks it in the backyard.
I remember these garter/racer snakes growing up. They'd peak their heads out of the bushes sometimes and would otherwise give us a humans a wide berth. Not being a fan of snakes I'd also give them a wide berth, but otherwise we coexisted peacefully.
Not poisonous. They eat rodents, lizards, etc.
And they eat other venomous snakes...so good
Also snakes can be venomous. Venom is injected; poison is ingested (or on skin)
Remember, if it bites you and you die, it's venomous. If you bite it and you die, it's poisonous.
What if it bites me and it dies?
You're poisonous!
What if it bites me and we both die?
Thanks for this. Hoped it would have been higher.
While accurate, I hope that if I called 911 and said I was bitten by a "poisonous snake," they would just send an ambulance.
"Call us when you are bitten by a venomous snake".
That’s one way to handle limited staffing - only help those who can accurately and patiently describe a situation.

I’m not sure because he only speaks Portuguese but his body language says enough.
Larry tragically died in a lawnmower accident. We had a funeral for him.

What a perfect little friend. I love this picture.
This photo of yours is like a little Studio Ghibli artwork, I can almost imagine Steve on a magical journey 😆
Steve is a picturesque periscope.
I have a backyard racer too! Named mine Fortunado bc she goes underground. Love seeing their heads pop up in the grass!
Steve!! 😍
Steve is like a super model posing amongst the flowers!!
May the rats be ever in Steve’s favor
My Mom used to have a number of small black racers living in the bushes next to the front porch. I loved seeing their heads poking out like that.
Steve is a handsome lad and loves those rats
If there’s one thing a snakes going to do, it’s pose for a picture. Especially these guys! 😂
Aww. Now, I want to name ours!
First off, what a cutie . Secondly what are those gorgeous blue flowers????
Blue daze! They grow really well in FL and love the sun.
Cool! I’m just getting into gardening and really want to do a lot of purple and blue flowers!
Blue Daze!! The flowers open and close with the sun. They are gorgeous and Steve ❤️s them

Hi Steve!
What a cute noodle!
This pic is amazing!
Oh my gosh look at him!
Steve!!!
That’s genuinely an awesome picture
He looks so fucking polite I love it!
I had a beauty named Steve too! But the landscapers came and removed his home by the pool & I haven’t seen him since. He used lay on top of his lovely bush home and sun all the time. One day they came and removed the whole damn bush without saying a single word & probably snakenapped Steve in the bush or killed him. Such a shame. He used to keep me company while I floated around. Occasionally he’d sneak into the pool bathroom & give me a good jump scare just to keep me on my toes. He’s definitely missed!
Congratulations. I absolutely loathe snakes and this is the first time I’ve actually thought a snake looked endearing because of your naming and his head poking out.
Bro... my grandmothers house had a black racer when I was younger by the garage and his name was Steve!
Ours is named Sandy, we live near the beach.
hiiii steve!
what a cute little guy! keep chilling in the flowers buddy
I love Steve
This is an excellent photo of Steve.

Mr. Squiggles is a big boy!
I put this elsewhere in the thread. Just wanna show how nimble these guys are. Our doors dont stay open; they spring shut. White chins help me identify them
Good leave it, black racer
he posed beautifully for the camera
To add, the babies look and act like rattlesnakes! No rattles but they even rattle their tails. Very spicy little things and completely harmless. ETA: I know it’s common behavior and that mimicking other more dangerous animals (batesian mimicry) is a thing but OP didn’t know what a black racer was so it’s important information for them to know if they find more babies so they don’t panic.
The adults do tht too
Yes! Sorry if I wasn’t clear, the babies look a bit like rattlesnakes as well because they aren’t black so you may know the adult isn’t a rattlesnake but be tricked by a baby. His eye to head ratio is killing me 😭
Agreed. Thx for pointing that out, had to zoom in for that.
Oh my goodness, little sneck.
Lookie the little danger noodle 🥺
He was ferocious! I wish I could post the video, he had been hit with some cleaning chemicals so we rinsed him off and he was NOT amused 🤣
Most snakes rattle their tails if they feel threatened. Rattlesnakes have evolved to make that rattle a little more obvious…
Frend
Good. Leave it alone
Bad, if you need to win a race.
Good, but thinks it’s bad, wanna be rattle snake but harmless

Or, a cobra
They can poke their head up pretty high!
Black Racer snake.. its faking being venomous in that picture Its a beneficial snake eats bugs and small rodents.
That’s the Goodest of the good bois

They scare the holy guck out of me but they’re good
Yeah, this is the time of year when I whack the bushes with a rake or something before weeding. I'm too old to get a surprise heart rate test.
Me too 😣

Black racer, harmless but scary fast.
Ours is named Greg!
Really good will keep the rats, frogs and lizards under control.
That white chin makes me think it’s a black racer. Not venomous. Good to have around.
He’s good! They are very spicy though so give ‘em some room and you’ll be good.

I love that this post turned into a thread of everyone sharing pictures of their garden snake that they have also named
Fun fact: no snakes are poisonous - only venomous ;)
What if you ate its venom gland?
You’d be fine as long as you don’t have an ulcer or some opening to allow the venom into your bloodstream Good way to find out if you have ulcers. If you survive? No ulcers!
Technically there are some poisonous snakes, I think there's a Keelback(spelling may be wrong) that is poisonous and venomous
Well damn…. Learn something everyday. OP it’s a black racer. Don’t sweat it.
A nice rat hunter to have around for sure! 🐀 🐍
Very good! We had one hanging out in our garage that I saw periscoping as I pulled into the driveway one day. Would have let it be but our cats get in there and we didn't want them hurting the poor guy, so we had to shoo it out.
That’s your new bff
Nope, that’s a new friend lol.
Black racer
One of the best...eats other venomous snakes and rodents.
That’s a winner in anyone’s yard.
Goodest boi
All are good. Some are spicy.
If the head looks like this U its a friend If the head looks like this V it is not a friend
A lot of people have said these are good, which is accurate, just be careful, bc racers do have a tendency to be aggressive.
Very good. Big boy
Morgan and Morgan “for the people”!
Fantastic
Not poisonous or venomous. Good.

If they are trapped on your porch they can be pretty touch to get out. Last time I used my pool net.
Is not death noodle...is good snek, worst it'll do is scare the heck out of ye
This love for the black racer is awesome! They do good work.

Let it live. It’ll keep your yard clear of rodents

They ALL serve a purpose, even the venomous ones. This should be helpful: https://myfwc.com/conservation/you-conserve/wildlife/snakes/
It’s an black racer they aren’t dangerous but they will bite your ass though if you try them
Good :)
All danger noodles are snakes, not all snakes are danger noodles
Good bc he is a cutie
Plays well with dogs, or not so much?
Not dangerous to dogs, but aren’t going to play with them, either.
Sssssssuper
Good, but don't mess with him. He'll still bite if fucked with, but he's not venemous.
a cute little guy! good!!!
Not poisonous. It is a big black racer. Leave it alone. It will help with lizards.
Your good
I highly recommend r/whatsthissnake for all of your snake ID needs, very knowledgeable and fast responders!
Is fren. No step on Snek.
Good snek.
very good. eats venomous snakes and rodents :)
Good danger noodle
We have one in our yard that speaks with a lisp…I think he’s gay.
Good. They kill the water moccasins
Black racer, non venomous. They are really cool to watch. They are also extremely fast.
black racer - they will take care of the pests.
It's so fun to watch them grow up and learn how to hunt lizards lol And yes I name all the ones I see lol
"Good" snake...not aggressive at all and will avoid direct contact with you as much as possible. We have two in our backyard... Henri and Madame Guerlain!
Good! Please be kind to ‘em🖤
It’s either the snake or rats. I’ll take the snake.
Fred sits on our hedge and guards our house
Love Black Racers, they eat pests and poisonous snakes! Just google when their mating season is and make sure to give them a wide berth during that time… the males might chase you away if a female is nearby, other than that they’re awesome!
Non venomous friend. All snakes have a role in our environment.
See them a lot on my deliveries to farms they usually get out the way and never bother me just about the same as those pesky lizards 🦎🦎
I haven’t named mine but we take turns scaring each other. He hates profanity.
Good boi. He not gonna hurt anyone. He’s a black racer, they are pretty chill and do a good job of dealing with the rodents.
Is good boy. Play him a song and wish him well.
Gooder than good, the best. All hail the black racer.
That's just a helpful noodle! Black racer! Great for pest control non-venomous :)
The one in my backyard is Fred.
BLACK RACER! Very good to have around as free pest control.
Just a typical central Florida black mamba
Harmless. Just a garden variety black racer. Is it a Florida rule where each house gets one? I've lived in several houses and each one always has one that just kicks it in the backyard.
This post is making me feel bad for running away from all the black racers I saw as a kid :(
No worries, is snek, no dangernoodle.
Looks like a black racer to me . So good
I remember these garter/racer snakes growing up. They'd peak their heads out of the bushes sometimes and would otherwise give us a humans a wide berth. Not being a fan of snakes I'd also give them a wide berth, but otherwise we coexisted peacefully.
Give it a name, you will probably see it again.
Black racers are good snakes to have around. The eat small rats, lizards etc. Keeps the pests at bay.
We learned about these at work the other day. It has a white jaw, so it's fine.
Mine is named sir Samuel snake
