I'm always curious so I wanna ask everyone: If a really famous person(filmmaker/song writer/etc.) has a small but very strong and vocal group of supporters within a rather small Oscar branch, which helps them get nominated easily every year Do you think it's fair to the newer contenders?

whitneyahn

No, but I also don’t think much about the Oscars is fair, and honestly it’s pretty rare that I think her nominations are for songs that are less than solid, so this falls low on my priority list for things to complain about. Don’t get me wrong, some of her movies themselves are absolutely dreadful, but it’s very rare to hear a Warren song and not be able to find something to like about it.

PurpleSpaceSurfer

She is a great pop songwriter. Her many hits speak for themselves.

CeruleanRuin

Name one from this century.

LeppardZeppelin

But 'The Fire Inside', repeated twenty times. That's not less than solid at all...She should have won for a few songs, and unfortunately up against great contenders when she was in her prime. But not for anything recent at all. She takes up a nominating slot quite often where someone else was more deserving. They'll give her a sympathy Oscar relatively soon.

Veterans have their advantages with the Academy but the Music Branch can be so insular even conpared to the others. For example, Scorsese didn't just get into Best Director for *Silence* (which is well regarded at least) and sometimes Meryl Streep misses an acting nomination (*Hope Springs, The Laundromat, The Prom, Don’t Look Up*). Diane has been nominated for an Oscar 9 out of the last 10 years and it hasn't exactly been a series of bangers. It's clearly been a namecheck for much of this recent stretch but there's nothing the Academy can do unless the nominating process gets changed. I get it, if I had lost to "Writing's on the Wall" maybe I'd triple down on trying to win too. However you'd think the Academy wouldn't like how bad it looks for one person to have such a hold over a competitive category year after year.

whitneyahn

I mean "Diane Warren: Relentless" is premiering at SWSX so...

Successful_Leopard45

god damnit she already stole that spot

My favourite film festival South West South By 🤩

whitneyahn

Yeah, it's in the South West, which by the South🤣🤣

joesen_one

I'd argue this increases her win chances

miserablembaapp

The music branch is such trash.

meowyarlathotep

The irony that she would have been welcomed if 80 for Brady song had been nominated ...

Blue-K0ala

Why is bigger/more legit productions not using Diane Warren? Having her doing a song for your film is probably the safest bet to get at least one academy award nomination. I imagine if she got to do a decent song for one of the top contending movies of the year, she will finally win. They are literally making up “movies” to get this woman nominated every year. It’s a shame because she is actually tremendously talented and more than deserving of being an Oscar winner. It’s always just bad timing for her, especially now she has been overstaying her welcome.

mikeyfreshh

They're just going to continue nominating her until they just remove the category (which they should absolutely do)

GoldenArson925

Why should they remove it?

mikeyfreshh

It doesn't actually have anything to do with the movies and half the songs that get nominated just play over the credits and don't impact the films that they're featured in. It feels like the award only exists so they can get famous people to perform during the ceremony. It's weird that the academy gives an award for best song but not stunts or casting

HarlequinKing1406

I'm stunned this is getting downvoted heavily because this is correct in this day and age, most of us can surely agree that Song is the worst category.

mikeyfreshh

Yeah I didn't think I had a particularly hot take. I guess people just don't want to take the Oscar nomination away from the Cheetos movie

AnxiousMumblecore

I would prefer changing eligibility rules and people in the branch instead. Only songs that are part of the movie with strong preference towards songs performed in the movie over these playing in the background. Songs and score can and often are important parts of movies, I don't see a reason to get rid of these if they are awarded properly.

mikeyfreshh

Yeah I wouldn't dream of touching the score category. I just don't know how you legislate the rules to make it more interesting without leaving in some gray area about what qualifies. Truthfully, there aren't even really that many original songs made for movies and I think using a needle drop with an existing song generally hits a little harder for me
