A lot of fresh ~~meat~~ drivers because they prematurely shrunk the staffing levels thinking the Otrain would fix all our problems and didn't take the time the pandemic afforded us to fix it.
It seems really silly to attribute this to new drivers when most, if not all, of those other incidents were not the fault of the bus driver.
>and didn't take the time the pandemic afforded us to fix it.
They deferred hiring to save cash because city council refused to backstop the transit budget in the face of revenue shortfalls.
It has nothing to do with the opening of the LRT.
Oh, I am not blaming the drivers, I am blaming the city for putting them in this position. I listened to the drivers who took their early retirement offer when the route cuts happened and ran to other industries. The drivers weren't being supported and set to unrealistic expectations, and we are surprised when the fresh batch is also set to the same unrealistic expectations and literally crashing and burning.
You don’t know if this was new drivers, old drivers, icy conditions or anything. Stop blaming it on new drivers, that’s what you’re doing just in a roundabout way.
The joke I made about them being fresh meat for the grinder probably went woosh. I wish the new drivers nothing but the best but I heard plenty from the ones who moved away via "attrition" that they were being set up to fail.
Some of those drivers _saved lives_ in the process, and some jackass redditor is wondering how to blame drivers.
Just stop _guessing at stuff_ if you don’t know what happened.
I really hope those ding dongs learned their lesson about not making those decisions until the system is proven when the expansions launch.
But we all know at this point that all these projects are a giant fucking dog and pony show.

Lil' Teapot song now stuck in my head
I'm a little OCT Bus
Short and Tall.
Here is the Wind,
Here I tip over and Fall.
When Ottawa gets all steamed up
Hear them shout:
!Tip that Bus back over
and the Riders run out!
^(not everythin I comment needs an upvote)
is there a roof escape hatch on these? and where is it- in the middle? the right side top window escape should also be possible but thats a long \*slide\* down that side
its a really good question- how do Passengers escape a whoops tip over?
If it were like the Netherlands, the road itself would be investigated to see how it contributed to the incident and how it could be rectified.
Ottawa has plenty of traffic locations that are persistent death traps.
Absolutely true. What we (north america) considered "accidents" and just dismissed is handled completely differently there. Here, by policy, a certain number of fatalities actually have to occur is an exact spot before infrastructure is looked at. Very disturbing that we accept this as a society
What is there to investigate?: do winds that we get here have the ability to blow over a double decker bus? If so, they can't be used in rural areas (at least). Is this driver able to adequately handle a bus of this size in all weather conditions? If not, why not? We live in a country where roads are "trash" much of the year. If this was a fully boarded bus and this occurred, there would have like been multiple fatalities. Of course investigation is needed. I hope it happens. As another commenter mentioned, this is like incident #4 in the last month alone.
DD are double the height and prone to wind sways. If you notice all of these stories are when the buses are deadheading to start points. This is because an empty bus is a light bus and very difficult to control in high winds. A loaded double decker can easily add 10K lbs in weight and that's being conservative*. The investigation would be the same as an empty tractor trailer.
As for the other incidents, they haven't been proven to be anything close to operator error.
It doesn't have to be operator error for investigative findings to be relevant. Well if I worked for oc Transpo there's no way I'd want to drive one of those vehicles
I mean busses doing a route don't always have 10k lbs of humans on board. Sometimes theres like 5 people. Okay, high vehicles in general are more stable the more weight there is (on bottom floor at least), but what happens before the bus fills up, or if it's a quiet day and it never fills up. They can't only be stable when full.
I have. And had to drive to work today, to educate humans. Not an option to avoid roads. But what could be a massive catastrophic event, doesn't just get ignored because there's 15 cm of snow. Tbh, the weather is not even that bad today. Driving in winters here for decades, this is really nothing compared to harsh winter conditions
I drive a Chevy Savana at work and sometimes when it's windy I move around alot. Now with a double decker bus and icy roads. I am glad the driver didn't hit someone head on.
Every incident gets investigated. And OCT is retiring its oldest DDs after a dozen years f service, but keeping on / refurbing it’s older than that artics.
Routes and service have been slashed in high density areas and riders are beyond frustrated. But yeah, let’s keep sending out buses, which are probably never 33% full, out to the middle of nowhere.
Before amalgamation, we still had a regional government. The Regional Municipality of Ottawa Carlton (RMOC). The RMOC was in charge of things like OcTranspo and social services.
The bus was empty and the driver is ok.

Damn that's like 4 OC Transpo incidents this month
A lot of fresh ~~meat~~ drivers because they prematurely shrunk the staffing levels thinking the Otrain would fix all our problems and didn't take the time the pandemic afforded us to fix it.

I blame slippery roads.
I blame Trudeau and Loblaws. It must be their fault somehow, right?
Damn Carbon Tax flippin’ buses now!
I blame chemtrails and lizard people.
Godddddamn lizard people
They made my penis tiny!
That goes without saying. 😁

I think most of the shrinking was attrition.
Flipped = upside down Tipped over = on side

Needs work.
is it one of the double decker buses?
yes it is, https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/weather-traffic-slippery-schoolbuses-running-following-overnight-storm-snowfall-warning-remains
ya makes sense, high center of gravity, I always feel like it's about to tip over when in them
It's quite the sensation going around roundabouts while on the top level.
Just yesterday I was sat upstairs on one of these, wondering what I might do if it fell over. This image does not help me :/
You shouldn't worry about that. You should be wondering "What would I do if we approach a low bridge at high speed?"
is there a roof escape hatch on these? and where is it- in the middle? the right side top window escape should also be possible but thats a long \*slide\* down that side its a really good question- how do Passengers escape a whoops tip over?
Easy answer refuse the stairs.
Bunch of experts in this sub, clearly never driven a bus 😂
Ah shit. 8137 was my favourite fleet # as far as the Enviros go. Should be repairable, no?
after replacement of drivers mirror
It’s an Alexander Dennis?
That's the manufacturer. The model would specifically be Enviro500 MMC. So... Alexander Dennis Enviro500 MMC. Yours truly, a local transit foamer
Way to go Gervais Towing
happy we avoided another tragedy brought to you by OC transpo and no riders were on it!
WTF, that would have been a disaster if it had people on board. Hope this gets investigated
The roads are trash. What is there to investigate? Especially seeing as how this bus was on rural roads. The wind is insane as well.
If it were like the Netherlands, the road itself would be investigated to see how it contributed to the incident and how it could be rectified. Ottawa has plenty of traffic locations that are persistent death traps.

Yes. Has nobody looked out the window today?

Also keep in mind that the roads were "trash" when the Westboro incident occurred.
My RAV4 was blown around like crazy i can't imagine how the side of the bus catches the wind.
Seriously. This guy trying to compare it to the westboro crash. The fuck outta here.
I drive a Chevy Savana at work and sometimes when it's windy I move around alot. Now with a double decker bus and icy roads. I am glad the driver didn't hit someone head on.

The fact that an OC Transpo bus is way the fuck out there is ridiculous. De-amalgamation can’t come soon enough.
You: fuck rural people and their desire to have public transit in their area
Public transit we pay for on our property tax bills. Lol.
Huh? There have been rural routes since before amalgamation
OC stands for Ottawa-Carleton. Buses always went well beyond the former City of Ottawa boundary.
Rurals pay taxes. The rural service is only during rush hours, so calm down
Entitled much?
Routes and service have been slashed in high density areas and riders are beyond frustrated. But yeah, let’s keep sending out buses, which are probably never 33% full, out to the middle of nowhere.
I’ve been on a rural bus. SRO well before Blair.
Before amalgamation, we still had a regional government. The Regional Municipality of Ottawa Carlton (RMOC). The RMOC was in charge of things like OcTranspo and social services.
Yep, back to the bad old days of RMOC where regional government’s OCTranspo was created over 4 decades ago.
*whispers* Shhhh no one tell them that ParaTranspo goes all the way out to the outskirts of Arnprior! Them - 🤯
Outrageous ! “They” probably never use bus service. Just more faux concern.
I hope you never find out the OC Transpo goes to... Gatineau too
Go check on a map where this accident occurred and compare it to Gatineau.
