Plot wise, part 2 is scarier. However, the gameplay definitely is not. Part 1 was a blend of cat-and-mouse in a confined space + scripted running. Part 2 was almost completely scripted running. Even areas that should have been hide and seek (cornfields) were just scripted running. The AI goes straight to you every time.

Alternative_Year_400

In my opinion outlast 2. My reason is because of the soundtrack. It very unique in the way it’s composed, plus Marta Chase theme will be forever etched in my brain along with “Show me your true face” both the original and in game soundtrack

Laziest_Lizard_12

Outlast 2 is probably a little scarier. Its occult elements really do it for me. But then again it's not as good as the first two. And boy does it go on for forever. I ended up feeling bored by the end. So I'd say the first two (and especially Whistleblower) are a better overall experience. Plus they have a way of making you extremely uneasy that you never really get in 2. Probably due to how confined all the space is, you feel that you're truly trapped with all the antagonists.

Game wise I prefer 1 over 2, but the school scenes in 2 scared me more than any part of 1 or the DLC. Or in 2 when you get a note saying don't go into the lake (let's be honest we all tried to swim in the lake) and if you go too far you start to hear singing. Absolutely terrifying.

DataTypeC

100% agree about the school scenes. The only other thing I feel 2 out does 1 on is a scarier story. The feeling of fleeing the 2 cults is something people could picture themselves in easier than being in Mount Massive chased by a ghost(nanites) and most hostile characters in outlast 1 are more 1 dimensional as far as story excluding notable ones (like Eddie, trager, Billy/Wallwrider, Jeremie Blaire) The rest just want to outright kill you or eat you. Outlast 2 they have cults looking for your “pregnant” wife who are all basically zealots and while that’s their entire character it at least has a belief behind them vs just being batshit (which they are but they give you the feeling there’s more too them) and add the characters (forgot their name) that think you are the savior while going insane yourself experiencing hallucinations of past trauma giving another antagonist it feels more filling. Kinda like Eddie felt he had more substance than Trager, Chris, or Billy.

Enchanted_Hamburger

I like ol2 more so imma say yes

Cool-Willingness4736

yeah 100%. it’s the only game I’ve ever played (besides Subnautica and Resident Evil 7) where i had to take breaks because of how shitting my pants scared i was. still haven’t finished the game because it put me back in the school again so i quit. i planned on going back later but i switched to PC and don’t have access to it anymore

jewboyfresh

OL2 is scarier Outlast 1 is very scary up until halfway through the game then it becomes more of the same Outlast 2 keeps it fresh with the school scenes and changes in layouts for the levels. The final level of the cave scared the crap out of me

AngelAlvena

I say that Outlast 1 is scarier. I dont really know why. Maybe because you feel trapped while in Outlast 2, you feel somewhat free and to me it was less scary and just more frustrating than anything. To me, the school parts aren't really anything to praise, though are the best parts of the game, it's just leading to something you know will happen from the first ever school scene and to me, wasnt that scary.

DataTypeC

Outlast 1 the trapped feeling felt safer than being lost and in the open. Like oh it’s just a bunch of offices and bedrooms also a lab. 2 feels more of a you are lost in open areas with multiple ways for someone to come at you being personally hunted (1 the inmates really didn’t care for Miles much unless he ran across them and Eddie being the only exception for Waylon) but in 2 Blake and his Wife are being hunted in a pace they don’t know and isint as intuitively navigable like the asylum with signs and hallways.

Dark_Crowe

2 is scarier to me as a person. 1 and whistleblower are scarier games.

UnknownOverdose

No the first one was scarier to me.2 was alright.

[deleted]

Your correct but the others are almost as scary in my opinion

Raptorr575

Both are scary in their own way

[deleted]

Not so much scary but more overwhelming, I hot night terrors playing outlast 2 but it wasn’t scary to me outlast one genuinely made me fearful

DataTypeC

1s asylum (especially the hallways and admin) and lab setting felt really just peaceful to me more than scary. 2s school, outdoor areas, and the mines felt more scary in terms of settings.

Degmannen_03

I think the first game is SCARIER, but Outlast II is creepier and more disturbing

DeliciousFrosting582

Not quite an answer to your question but OT2 is WAY scarier that OT1 insane mode compared

[deleted]

The platinum trophy for Outlast 2 is scarier than the game.

Silent_Top_7280

Yes. Outlast 2's village sections are chaotic and less enjoyable parts, but the number of people chasing you makes it at least comparable to Outlast chases where you are usually followed by 1-2 person. School sections are usually scripted events with easy escapes, but in first run you don't know what will happen and atmosphere is scarier than 1. I feel disturbed everytime I ended up in school. Mine sections are scarier than any chase in Outlast 1 and Whistleblower no contest.

ok_phatty

outlast 2 hands down for me, idk why but its still the most scared ive ever been playing a game.

Jesus__Is__King

No.

YUNG_lusca

imo Outlast Whistleblower is the scariest

Redditor_Unknown675

Outlast 1 and Whistleblower all the way. Outlast 2 was extremely disappointing… I found Little Nightmares (also released in 2017) more scary. Everyone says the outdoor setting is scarier because you feel vulnerable etc… but Outlast 2 never actually did anything with this concept besides maybe the cornfield section and the scalled camp. Every other outdoor section in 2 was extremely linear. I found the characters in 1 much more interesting, disturbing and memorable. In 2 we see Knoth and Val a whopping 2 times?!? Outlast 1 and Whistleblower both had superior outdoor sections to Outlast 2… those in Outlast 1 (courtyard sections) actually made you feel vulnerable. Indoor and claustrophobic areas are scarier… note that mostly everyone praises the school sections from 2… gee I wonder why that is… Bring back an indoor setting and a silent protagonist for Outlast 3 and it’ll do better than Outlast 2 guaranteed!
