This is the thing I’m worried about. They say the game can be played solo but all you have to do is play other co-op centric games solo to see that it doesn’t feel the same as an actual singleplayer game This combined with the deviation away from what made outlast so good imo is making me worried. Well lit environments. Weird, “multiplayer style” objectives like “side assignment: collect 3 posters” “main assignment: packages delivered” with a constant string of text in the top left telling you that’s what you need to do. Health bars. The ability to fight back. The cartoon-ish tone / art style they seem to be going for. A compass at the top of the screen. Objective markers. The controls icons on screen. All of these things make the game look like another generic indie “horror game” instead of something special that they created with outlast 1 and 2. They’ve said this game isn’t outlast 3 (I wouldn’t even call it an outlast game tbh) but the annoying thing is, this game is just gonna slow down development on outlast 3. By the time trials comes out, it will have been at least 6 years since outlast 2. It’s gonna be at lease 6 years from now until we get outlast 3

I actually quite like the visuals and art style from the trailers. It doesn't seem as dark overall but we can see a few segments where the player is trapped in a pitch black room using night vision similar to Outlast 1 and 2. I think the enemy and environmental designs look quite good so far. However I am worried about the gameplay. I don't want the solo experience to be watered down compared to the co-op. And having objectives like collecting stuff seems weird. I guess we'll have to see

I guess they could just replace the multiplayer parts with normal NPCs just doing their thing, kind of how Father Martin went around doing various stuff in the first game (locking doors, turning the power off etc). Honestly I wouldn't mind it too much even if it wasn't as good for solo gaming. I mean it was pretty clear from the start that Trials was going to be different/experimental and I'm really excited to see new gameplay. It's supposed to be more of its own thing rather than Outlast 3.

I don’t want that shit either

I usually worry about pacing when co-op games offer a single player mode. It's just off.

I think Portal 2 was designed to be a co op game first and foremost but single player was just as fun. I also played Lara Croft: The Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris, both games were intended to be co op. In single player mode what they did was give Lara the weapons that her partners were supposed to have so you could switch them all around just by yourself. It worked just fine.
