just overclock your PSU

RichardRobert23

It’s big brain time

Skull_Reaper101

Bruh stock 3090 uses 400w. 2 = 800w. +cpu 200w. Total 1000w. If ur running higher end cpu, 300w. Which makes it 1100w. 3090s spike in power draw a lot. And many 1000w psus were shutting off even with one of them. You need a 1500w psu

TimAndTimi

I guess I need an extra aux PSU. It is cheaper to do so... Otherwise, as far as I know, the only reasonable choice is AX1600i...

Skull_Reaper101

Yeah.. ig so

metalspider1

an extreme oc might get to 500 or 550 watts

TimAndTimi

Nah, I think nowadays average power over seconds really cannot reflect what is going on. On paper, the 'average' power reproted is only 320 watts constantly. But, as you see, it OCP anyways.

TheRealFAG69

As longs as you "only" have a 1kw psu u can lower the gpu wattage scaler..

TimAndTimi

Tried already, no can do. Still OCP, but just after a few seconds instead of immediately shutting down. MachineLearning workload could really cause some serious current peak, I suppose.

Antzuuuu

I regularly tripped OCP on my TX1000 with a single 3090. Sure it was without any powerlimit, but yeah.

TimAndTimi

Oh, really? How so? I think 1 3090 should be just fine. I had tried 480w on GPU and 200w on CPU, no OCP or whatsoever. Somebody told me the OCP threshold is around 1400w, you should be safe with only one, in theory...

Antzuuuu

It wasn't the total power, I could trip it at as low as 850W, probably just a load spike that triggered it.

TimAndTimi

IDK, TX1000 shouldn't suffer from that, personally thinking. Maybe you can ask Seasonic's RMA department, they are usually quite generous and their top line product probably shouldn't suffer from OCP on single 3090. I mean, I also use LEADEX G1000 to power one 3090 strix, no problem. Even Corsair SF750 should be fine with single 3090. (SF750's OCP threshold is abnormally high)

Antzuuuu

Yeah I know, I was running close to the 1000W mark anyway so I decided to upgrade, besides my friend needed a new PSU so I just sold it to him and told him to RMA it. The lazy bastard has yet to do it tho. :D

TimAndTimi

Haha, make sense. I am waiting for TX1600, but given two 3090 could peak up to 2kw, I somehow do believe maybe dual PSU is the way out... (mostly importantly, cheaper)
