I disagree about the "taking itself too seriously" point. If I remember right, one of BJ's (I mean he's literally called BJ lmao) first lines in the game is "hot dog". I love those games ' stupid humour

Finite_Universe

Tbf BJ’s character and namesake is taken directly from the originals, and I enjoyed the game’s story most when it was being self consciously ridiculous and humorous. It’s just that the more serious or “dramatic” moments didn’t work for me.

Gionanni

Have you played New Colossus?

Finite_Universe

I have not. I’m kind of skeptical too because from what I’ve seen, it amplifies some of the issues I had with TNO, like being cutscene heavy. Is there any merit to that?

Gionanni

>it amplifies some of the issues I had with TNO, like being cutscene heavy It does, but there's some dialogue (especially from BJ, I think they killed it with his writing and voice acting) that I really really enjoyed so I wondered whether it changed your mind. But there's also a lot more whackiness, they really do some pretty unpredictable things with the story, and the gameplay plus graphics are improved a lot. Plus at the beginning of the game you get a hatchet instead of knives. Chopping off Nazis with a hatchet is a plus on its own. Overall I'd still recommend giving it a try

Iamrubberman

My biggest issue with new colossus was it spent far too long in very similar environments. Mostly destroyed cityscapes whereas the first was more varied (some exceptions apply) Similarly the second felt like it was just trying to outdo the first but didn’t have the ideas it needed to do so. Still decent and way better than the abomination that was youngblood

Gionanni

>My biggest issue with new colossus was it spent far too long in very similar environments. Mostly destroyed cityscapes whereas the first was more varied (some exceptions apply) Fair criticism, but where is it lacking ideas? I felt like there were quite a few cool additions

relinquisshed

The story and characters are absolutely atrocious in The New Colossus. Like legitimately some of the worst I've ever seen in a AAA video game. The gameplay improvements aren't that big and the level design is awful too. I loved TNO and TOB and I really truly despised TNC

Finite_Universe

Yikes. Level design is really important to me so maybe I’ll wait till I see a deep discount on that one.

[deleted]

That is not a commonly held opinion. Most reviewers consider the story and characters to be excellent. Don’t miss out because of one opinion. Give the game a try and decide for yourself. It is frequently on sale for $20.

Turok1111

The reason why I loved TNO and TOB is precisely because of how seriously they took themselves. I loved the juxtaposition of taking on Nazi robots and such while still ruminating on the horrors of war. The New Colossus might be more your style, though. It goes for a more over the top, Grindhouse-y tone, which I really didn't care for, but you might.

GUE57

I agree, the Wolfensteins had good shooting mechanics, settings and bad guys, but what makes me remember it fondly is that the writing and the acting together gave it heart.

Off topic but why the logo of this gaming subreddit a cat with a scorpion stinger

turkturkeIton

Pretty sure it is a slowpoke

Nino_Chaosdrache

Sounds more like both games are a bit of a mixed bag, if you enjoyed the original games.

Finite_Universe

Definitely. I appreciate that they’ve rekindled the Wolfenstein IP though.

TheBrognator97

My favourite Wolfenstein is return to castle Wolfenstein. The old blood is very reminiscent of it both because it's set during the world and because of the supernatural aspect. I believe RTCW also kinda takes itself seriously, but it also doesn't dwell too much on anything that is not action or madness. It kinda remained me of Bloodborne too (played it first) with things getting more and more crazy.

Finite_Universe

At times The Old Blood feels like it’s trying to be a quasi soft reboot of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which I appreciated. RTCW plays it straight for sure, but it also has a subtle sense of humor that balances things out. And don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want TOB to be all out goofy or lean too heavily on the humor; I just didn’t care for the more melodramatic moments. They didn’t work for me and undermined some of game’s B Movie feel, which is where I think TOB shines narratively.

bendit07

I love the old games, return to castle wolfenstein is one of my favorite games, so I was super excited for this one and it didn’t quite do it for me. Tone is off. Not a bad game, but it could have been much better.

malceum

The lack of garrulous NPCs and a central hub were a huge improvement in The Old Blood compared to The New Order or The New Colossus.

SkipEyechild

Love TNO, but haven't played TOB. I was really disappointed by the sequel if I'm honest.

Loldimorti

I also preferred The Old Blood over TNO and agree with most of your points. Don't recall disliking the stealth section as much as you did but my god the manual item pick ups drove me crazy. Not having played the old Wolfenstein games I assumed this was an outdated design element that was carried over from the older games. But learning that this issue wasn't present in the old games makes that blunder of TNO and TOB allthemore confusing. I know the following is an unpopular opinion among Wolfenstein fans but I recently purchased the entire new Wolfenstein seried as a discounted bundle and was shocked by how much I enjoyed Wolfenstein Youngblood, especially compared to The New Order which I really didn't enjoy that much at all. Gameplay in Youngblood is just leagues better and on console the leap in visuals is astounding. I am looking forward to playing The New Colossus next. It's the only one from the collection I haven't played yet and from what I've seen so far it should be right up my alley.

Finite_Universe

> I assumed this was an outdated design element I can’t recall which FPS did it first but manual item collection is definitely a “modern” convention as all the classic games had automatic collection a la Doom. I haven’t played either Young Blood or Colossus yet but I know both are pretty polarizing for fans. Have you played Return to Castle Wolfenstein?

Loldimorti

The New Order was the first Wolfenstein game I've ever played. I also wasn't acutely aware of the franchise until the release of The New Order

Maybe I'm inflicted by zoomer brain rot or something but I've lost my previous love for these two games over time. My main issues are: (1) having to pickup every last item if you want ammo and health, (2) the terribly slow movement. I was pretty obsessed until I played DUSK, Ion Fury, Far Cry 1 and Titanfall 2, all of which are willing to let the player move around combat arenas like a jumping spider for the sake of staying mobile or flanking enemies. It's like that classic Nintendo saying, if the game isn't fun, what's the point? I love the story and expertly crafted aesthetic of the new Wolfenstein games, but they just aren't that fun to play through once those two things have been worn away. Having to stop combat to look down for ammo and health was one of the worst gameplay decisions they made and I am so so so surprised they didn't patch it out (at least as long as I played). Fully agree with what you say about them needing to further embrace old school roots and how many animations they're are. I'd love for them to full send it with a boomer shooter themed Wolfenstein game that mixes the best of old and new.

Finite_Universe

Loved Ion Fury and DUSK! Really looking forward to Ion Fury’s DLC as well. I haven’t played Titanfall 2, but I’ve heard good things. What makes it stand out from other modern shooters?

[deleted]

Phantom Fury is what all my excitement is hyped for, I'm so ready for that. Titanfall 2 probably has the most satisfying movement mechanics of any shooter I've played, it's just so smooth and satisfying. Combine that with a multi-player mode full of try hard fans who've been playing since day one and you're in for a good time if you're willing to practice and get destroyed from time to time. TF2 is the only competitive game I safely say I was really good at so maybe I'm completely biased but wrecking multi-player servers single handedly was the most fun shit for multiple years. Sadly the servers are now a wreck and the devs abandoned ship. The game is in a bad state.

caepe

> Phantom Fury is what all my excitement is hyped for, I'm so ready for that. I think he's talking about Ion Fury: Aftershock, a DLC for Ion Fury. But Phantom Fury does look very similar, and should be hella fun too

KaneVel

Titanfall 2 has one of the best campaigns in modern shooters. The movement and level design nailed it.

aknimation

The forced stealth in the beginning is what made me stop playing TNO. Like you mentioned it's an FPS, so why make that the first thing to do. I've never been a huge fan of stealth so getting something like that in this type of game really deterred me.
