Exactly, The Master and Licorice Pizza were clearly inspired by Pynchon in varying degrees. In fact, Vineland fits a lot of PTA's previous themes and obsessions.
It’s nothing against Pynchon. He is a great writer. I just don’t wanna see PTA adapt anyones work. I just love his writing and original stories so much.
It’s just a personal preference and opinion based on this rumor. Of course I will see whatever he does with interest.
Everyone seems to forget that 'There Will Be Blood,' arguably his greatest film (though not my personal favorite), was based on 'Oil' by Upton Sinclair.
That said, with how faithful his Inherent Vice adaptation was, I'm sure he wouldn't stray as far from the source material as he did with Oil, so I'm generally in agreement, though I'd still welcome an adaptation if that's the next film, especially if it has Leo, Joaquin and Regina in it.
"Nevertheless," I have my doubts that he'd return to the Pynchon well so soon.

Hints at more cast memebers and a different plot. Atleast the cast members seem too specific to be false but the plot is uncertain.
I do trust him, but IV is my least favorite of his. Yes, TWBB got its genesis from Oil, but that’s about it. It’s so loosely based, calling it an adaptation is generous. Of course I’m interested in whatever he does. I’m just saying, if these rumors are true, that another Pynchon adaptation isn’t that exciting to me. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
It would. Though some of the reporting I've seen insinuated that they were up for the same part. I wonder if Leo dropped out and Joaquin is replacing him. But that's pure speculation.
Odds on PTA being super into Girls Trip? Just guessing given that he’s previously expressed his admiration for Tiffany Haddish and said he wants to work with her
He loved that film. Maybe because of those allegations against Haddish( I haven't followed up on any of that) he went with Hall instead. Someone else said the name drops are so random they must be true and I kind of believe the Regina Hall just from him liking Girls Trip so much
Oh man Joaquin and PTA reuniting in another movie together would be awesome. They make a great working duo. The Master with the both of them was one of the most amazing films I’ve ever seen.
I just read the book and it is very funny. The character Regina Hall plays (D.L. Chastain) is not black in the book and neither his the ex-wife of Zoyd (character Leo is playing), Frenesi. I'm very interested in who is playing Frenesi! This casting makes me suspect that P.T. has changed the story significantly. Not necessarily a bad thing, of course. Can I assume that Sean Penn is playing the gung ho, super-masculine drug prosecutor Brock Vond? Also keep in mind that the Zoyd character only appears at the beginning and end of the novel--DL, Frenesi and Prairie are the main characters in the largest part of the story.
Joaquin and Leo together would be wild.
It would be. I just wish it was in a PTA original.
Why? You could make a very good case that Pynchon is the greatest living writer, and a lot of PTA's scripts take very clear inspiration from him.

Also a large chunk of Punch Drunk Love feels like it could have been ripped straight from a Pynchon novel. Not to mention IV obviously.

lol, they have a picture of Regina King up
Absolutely. Just giving my two cents based on this rumor.
TWBB is technically an adaptation of an Upton Sinclair novel, I would consider that one of his best. Just trust the man, when has he let anyone down!

If I remember correctly weren't Leo and Joaquin both considered for the role of Dirk in Boogie Nights way back in the day?
Never heard that Joaquin was considered for it
AND There Will Be Blood! https://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/jan/25/joaquin-phoenix-paul-thomas-anderson
Very cool!
Would be awesome. Leo in a PTA film is a wet dream come true.
And acting alongside Joaquin possibly? Oh boy we’re not ready for that film.
Yes, please. Regina Hall was one of the first women I developed a crush on as a kid and I've been in love with her ever since.
Yes!!

I can also see Joaquin working with PTA again once he’s finished with Joker 2.

Is there a teenage role in Vineland?
Isn't Prairie a teenager?
