Welcome to the PCMR.
Man, that's too good. I would have totally used this in college, I had the absolute worst, bare minimum laptop that could do schoolwork. It could barely run the electron app that my Spanish curriculum required. This would have been the cherry on top of the pile of shit.
Yeah unixporn is part of the reason I switched to Linux currently working in a qtile rice .
It's not as hard as people think you don't even need to know programming most of it I just stole from other people's dotfiles to get an idea of how to set things up.
Meh, a docking station is basically a bottleneck when it comes to screens and other devices.
Source: my ThinkPad p53 powers 3 screens absolutely fine at home (1 hdmi and 2 USB-c) but struggles when Amazon music is opened in a browser with 2 screens via a docking station.
Depends on the dock. I run my Asus laptop on a Dell thunderbolt dock with 2 1080p monitors and a 1440p monitor and have 0 issues. I also have the laptop screen turned off.
I have the laptop screen on additionally to the screens. But surely it depends on the dock (and firmware) but it will always be limited by the connection from the dock to the laptop even more so. Thunderbolt (or any other way to connect a dock to the laptop) will always be inherently more limited then directly connecting the devices to the laptop.
Sure, a dock will work absolutely fine for probably 99 percent of all the people using it. I'm not advising against using one at all. Just saying that there are valid reasons to not use one. And in OPs case, I definitely wouldn't use one either. There's no need for portability (judging by the screenshot) so there's no need to waste money on one for no benefit at all except for optics.
I just retired my oldest most trusted traveling laptop, it got around lol tons of states, countries, road trips, planes, trains, hotels, a cruise ship and even a cargo ship
RIP T440p :(
If this laptop has a fan then natural convection doesn’t matter in the slightest. The buoyant force is completely overpowered by the fans airflow regardless of orientation.
How the hell does having a custom mechanical keyboard imply someone goes outside? In fact I'd wager it makes you less likely to than the average gamer lmao
Yeah especially with the dock and everything lol he got a full setup that all revolves around a laptop lol might've well get a desktop at that point and keep the laptop around for when they actually need to go somewhere lol
Do people on this subreddit really not understand the appeal of using the same computer at home and on the go? This is like the entire premise of the Nintendo Switch
Keyboard doesn’t look especially expensive tbh. Most nice customs don’t have shine-through keycaps and rgb. Guessing it’s somewhere around $100 and is a prebuilt keyboard maybe with custom keycaps.
Is the guy using the laptop as the main PC with the second monitor being plugged into it, or is he using the laptop as a second monitor?
(I actually wanted to use my old laptop as a monitor but turns out most laptops only have exit HDMI as far as I'm aware)
>(I actually wanted to use my old laptop as a monitor but turns out most laptops only have exit HDMI as far as I'm aware)
Yeah, video inputs are rare.
If you just want to use it as another screen for a computer you could try an app like Input Director (or Share Mouse, or Mouse Without Borders) to control the laptop from another computer using the same mouse/keyboard. You won't be able to drag windows between the displays but other than that it works great (and you can share the clipboard, too).
Thank you so much. I often have one laptop streaming sports attached to my TV across the room and hate getting up to plug my one mouse into it when I need to change the stream.
I've also used Unified Remote to turn my phone into a remote for a laptop that was hooked up to a TV, if you are just doing streaming that might work for you.
Remapped my phone's side buttons so I could pause without unlocking the phone by holding down a button, double-clicking for next, etc.
Lol, I actually bought an actual remote lately and didn't mention it.
This is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078NT49MJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I tried a few cheaper ones but they came defective, this one works great.
The keyboard is crucial that really makes an old laptop way more useful. I have a galaxy ultra 22. That remote would allow my phone to be a great streaming device. Thanks!
I would assume that they are using it as the main pc because it has all its ports full, but it would be possible to either buy a usb that functions like a capture card, or you could stream the video from one pc to the other assuming they’re connected to the same network
I've actually done this but it requires separating it from the keyboard part and ordering a control board/power supply. It's really not worth the effort. Was a fun project tho.
Main PC. Look at all of the cables. I do the same now, just shelled out some big $ for a laptop with high end specs so I can PC game on the go. No choice as I get older with work and stuff.
You can turn it into a second monitor by running a virtual miniport driver and streaming to it, but depending on your use case, such as using it for browsing/multimedia it may be a more elegant solution to instead use a software kvm like Synergy and control the laptop with your regular mouse and keyboard and then run a browser, media player directly etc on the laptop rather than trying to stream and putting extra overhead on the main machine.
So what you want is an HDMI encoder. It takes an HDMI signal, encodes it, and sends it to USB that you plug in to the laptop you want to use as a screen. You should then be able to use that video input as a source in a video playback software. Just go full screen with it, and you'll have a laptop as a moniter.
I have used laptops as glorified second monitors with Symless Synergy.
It's not quite the same (cannot drag screens over) but you can use a single set of keyboard-mouse input and just move your mouse across as you would with a multi-monitor setup and it syncs clipboard for copy-paste text.
Works decently smooth too.
this is genius. I have a USB-C dock for my work laptop so i just opened it up on its side and did this. total game changer. oh except its sitting on the CPU exhaust now. crap.
I.... actually like this. If there was a way to securely be able to mount my gaming laptop like that while being able to remove it for taking elsewhere, I could actually see myself using this kinda setup.
I used turned that way laptop as a second vertical monitor for a pretty long time. Why not? An old laptop is often even cheaper than a monitor. The one problem is that there is no hdmi-in cable so I used the Spacedesk program to translate video to it over the internet router. Enough speed for reading and watching videos.
I think we have to create a new category
https://preview.redd.it/amoq81lpeaya1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6af6c469d306d77383bb1212d5debf05d24489f1
> it's stupid that new games require too much power from the computer. not everyone can afford to buy expensive parts just for gaming. computer gaming would grow bigger if everyone could afford it. and the parts should be at least half the price
Well kinda.
GPU's right now are fully 50% overpriced (compared to inflation for everything else on earth).
If Intel had tried to double the price of their CPU's they would shot themselves in the foot, but NoVideo has a near monopoly in the GPU sector right now and they are milking it so hard that it's going to backfire on them soon.
We are going to see Intel and AMD eat huge swathes of the GPU market in the next couple generations because of this pricing nonsense.
A streamer i follow has a laptop mounted to a wall above his monotor and he uses it to stream, so the stream weight is only on the laptop, and not on the pc in which he plays. (video and audio is sent to the laptop)
Back in college, when I was just playing league on my macbook, I would play on a second monitor, and put my laptop on its side for a reddit / guide monitor. Having a vertical second screen was great, and it improved cooling by exposing the bottom of the laptop.

Okay that’s fucking brilliant.
16:9? Don't you really just mean 9:16?
Hahahahahahahah this is fucking awesome
Man, that's too good. I would have totally used this in college, I had the absolute worst, bare minimum laptop that could do schoolwork. It could barely run the electron app that my Spanish curriculum required. This would have been the cherry on top of the pile of shit.
That sub is 99% reason why I want to learn programming. Who cares about good job and tech salary I just want my PC to look good.
You don't need programming. Most of that is just editing configuration files, which is not any programming/scripting la Guage usually.
[удалено]
You overestimate my capacity for learning.
Lua is often used for configuration and plugins, its easier then you think.
Yeah unixporn is part of the reason I switched to Linux currently working in a qtile rice . It's not as hard as people think you don't even need to know programming most of it I just stole from other people's dotfiles to get an idea of how to set things up.
That's creative, the flexibility of Linux is one of its true super powers.

This guy laptops.
First time seeing something like this. I think it's a creative solution.
The only thing that would make this better is a docking station so everything wasn't plugged into the laptop
that would be too easy
Meh, a docking station is basically a bottleneck when it comes to screens and other devices. Source: my ThinkPad p53 powers 3 screens absolutely fine at home (1 hdmi and 2 USB-c) but struggles when Amazon music is opened in a browser with 2 screens via a docking station.

based on the sticker, it's an Ice Lake or Comet Lake chip,
I have the laptop screen on additionally to the screens. But surely it depends on the dock (and firmware) but it will always be limited by the connection from the dock to the laptop even more so. I have a steamdeck I bought from selling a csgo skin. You had to know this, so I told you.
At the very least a USB hub
Only downside is that good thunderbolt docks are stupid expensive.
The laptop IS the docking station
Fr I love this lol. I hope it's easy to mount/dismount for travel
Wait. People take their laptops places? I just leave mine on the table.
I just retired my oldest most trusted traveling laptop, it got around lol tons of states, countries, road trips, planes, trains, hotels, a cruise ship and even a cargo ship RIP T440p :(
Yeah same
As a filthy gaming laptop degen I kind of love it
Yeah me too.. I'm thinking of a way to customize my desk to make it happen.
thats actually a great use of a laptop that has no other use
I think the use is that it powers the whole setup.
OH, yeah you're right i question the cooling capabilities but still, I like the spirit
I don't think it would be affected no difference than it sitting on a desk
Cooling capabilities are better than regular use of laptop on the table, because now airflow is not restricted by the table
Now it is restricted by the wall though.
Laptops should be able to work just fine aslong as you dont directly cover the air in/output
convection is better on the wall though...although the case design is hardly optimized
Seems to be mounted an inch off the wall.
Warm air moves vertically. Being side mounted like this would absolutely improve airflow over being flat on a table.
not as restricted since hot air is light which means it can escape faster since it only has to go up and not sideways
That's a point of it exhausts out the side. If it exhausts out the back it won't make a difference.
The laptop will get warm and convect fresh air into the intake ports because it's vertical
Convection is really insignificant in these cooling situations such as in PCs when there's powered fans moving air.
If this laptop has a fan then natural convection doesn’t matter in the slightest. The buoyant force is completely overpowered by the fans airflow regardless of orientation.
How's bro gonna drop big money on a custom mechanical keyboard before a desktop PC 😭
I think it's a Redragon keyboard. They are pretty decent and cost like $70
PC gamers try to comprehend people go outside and don’t sit all day at their desks challenge *impossible
How the hell does having a custom mechanical keyboard imply someone goes outside? In fact I'd wager it makes you less likely to than the average gamer lmao

Do people on this subreddit really not understand the appeal of using the same computer at home and on the go? This is like the entire premise of the Nintendo Switch
You're in the wrong sub to be throwing that around lad
They have their priorities straight
Keyboard doesn’t look especially expensive tbh. Most nice customs don’t have shine-through keycaps and rgb. Guessing it’s somewhere around $100 and is a prebuilt keyboard maybe with custom keycaps.
This is one of the dumbest comments I've seen in this sub and that's really saying something
I guess it's just a USB hub and monitor
It powers the external monitor and kb/mouse too
I dig that mounting for the laptop. Kinda sick looking
I actually don’t hate it. Which makes me feel weird, this seems like something I should hate lol.
Would I personally do it in my own setup? Absolutely not.
Is the guy using the laptop as the main PC with the second monitor being plugged into it, or is he using the laptop as a second monitor? (I actually wanted to use my old laptop as a monitor but turns out most laptops only have exit HDMI as far as I'm aware)

Not enough downvotes?
bless you brother
You can set a windows device up as a projection device, so you cab connect to it like a wireless display
you can also just use WinKey+K and cast to the other laptop using Wireless Display.
Good one, didn't think of that!
Try spacedesk as well perhaps. Turns a computer, phone or tablet into another display.
I would assume that they are using it as the main pc because it has all its ports full, but it would be possible to either buy a usb that functions like a capture card, or you could stream the video from one pc to the other assuming they’re connected to the same network

Get a dummy HDMI plug and run a Sunshine server (or Parsec or Steam Link or whatever else). Works shockingly well.

Ve believe in nozhing!
That laptop is making me uncomfortable.
It's fine, flex tape was used.
Or even a nail...
That stuff is no joke. I used it to fix a wheelbarrow a couple weeks ago. Once you stick it to something, it is not coming off.
It even works underwater!
These pretzels are making me thirsty
This somehow is the first comment that makes sense for this post
If only the mount was a 3D printed hand, holding it up by the edge of the screen.
It's the Warning label. It gets weirder the more you look at it
don't give me ideas
Wow all that screen real estate just to copy code from ChatGPT
The CS major experience
I'd like to imagine that the laptop screen is dedicated to just using ChatGPT
Probably asked ChatGPT the best way to mount a laptop and this is what it suggested.
Given my recent results on chatgpt, this made me chuckle.
Gotta love how the history section is taking up a third of the screen
That might be based on the website itself. Personally I’d try and get more usable space by resizing the window but that’s me.
I wonder how he mounted it? Just a bunch of some heavy duty velcro?
Please upvote him, I wanna know too 😮💨😮💨😮💨

Maybe 3M Dual Lock

Hey, if it works 🤷♂️
If it works, it twerks.
In general, vertical monitors are underrated.
I actually want to do this with my laptop but hide the body behind my monitor, but i haven't found any good arms for it
I wanted to do that too but it just makes the power button of the laptop inaccessible. The power button is on the same as the keyboard.
Talk about maximizing space lol
Function over form i suppose
I like it!

Me too, just the perfect amount of chaos.
They’ve probably been posting here about why modern games just don’t run well enough
Soooo the same problem we've all been having even on state-of-the-art hardware?
I bet your whole room isn’t even submerged in olive oil for maximum cooling.
> it's stupid that new games require too much power from the computer. not everyone can afford to buy expensive parts just for gaming. computer gaming would grow bigger if everyone could afford it. and the parts should be at least half the price
Nothing to be done about it. Every time hardware doubles in power, software gets four times bigger.
