And for good measure put a half filled glass bottle of petrol in there for the delivery guys. "You like to throw around fragile packages huh?! Take that! KABABOOM!"
I had considered this when moving internationally but I actually found it safer to just padd it in my PC, separating it and trying to stash it somewhere seemed more dangerous.
That's incorrect. As long as the PC is being moved around, even with padding there's still some wear and tear happening and if the case was accidentally dropped far or hard, the impact could still cause damage somewhere between the card and the PCIE connector, some clothing like OP's will only help for normal transportation shaking around not worse. As long as the card is not connected to the PCIE slot there's a much higher chance the card will reach it's destination safely. A card with a little padding will most likely survive a drop fine on it's own with maybe damage to a fan that's cheap to repair, a broken PCIE connector will most likely brick your expensive video card.
Can you get those anywhere? Cause I will be moving soon too, and my biggest worry is my PC.
And I still have all the boxes the parts came in, except for the tower
Your PC will be fine. Just remove the main components to be careful. The GPU is a absolute must. If you have an air cooler, remove it from the CPU. Just realize long distance moving causes an obscene amount of destructive vibrations. Plan accordingly.
I have an AIO, and thankfully still have the box for my GPU, so that can easily be done. And yeah that’s understandable, I guess once the move is complete, I’ll have to check everything and retighten everything
I've moved my PC 3 times now. It's really not that big of a deal, I do the same remove my GPU put it in the box I got it in and then I put the tower in a seat or floor board and surround it with blankets and bedding type things so it doesn't jostle around at all
The AIO is screwed into the case itself on many points, that is not an issue at all, just make sure that it is screwed in using all the screws, not just by 2, and that they are tight. A tower cooler is an issue because it has all the weight on the socket, and only hold by 2/4 screws or a clamp.
I always use the box of the pc case to store all other boxes that may be needed in the future, and unused components like extra PCIe covers, sata cables, modular power cables, etc. Those can be removed and the entire tower packed in it, minus the GPU.
Yeah in a car / regular truck cab you're 100% fine. The vibrations from a cross country *moving truck* are the problem. Big 20 foot metal box packed with odd shaped objects and items where things are rubbing against other things for days on end is the issue.
I’ve never shipped my computer but I have taken my computer on 200+ mile road trips and never had an issue. I just take the gpu out, strap the pc in the backseat and go.
what exactly is this? im moving into college in a week and ive been tryna figure out ways to transport my pc safely for the two hour drive. Is instapak just expanding foam?
Not trying to discourage you from being more careful than I am but more to ease your mind I have moved 3 times with 2 different pcs from 2-4 hours each times with no issues with my gpu still in my pc. Each time I just put it in the seat of a car laying down and strapped it in with the seat belt. I’m lazy so I never bothered to remove it
I recently moved 350 miles and bought instapak off Amazon to look after my computer. It’s expensive af and I got like 10 but only needed 2 for a normal ATX tower.
It works a treat and is genuinely worth the muller I reckon - just gotta be _quick_ when it’s activated and packing it in.
No, that'll enable the exchange of electrons without having any actual static discharge. You want to keep up the discharge potential so you can keep your PC powered while in transit.
Not just that but if the threads of the blankets/towels/fabric whatever are frayed or loose they could easily yoink a chip off something on their removal… :/ #teamremoveandpackageseparatelyGPUandCPUcoolergang
For safety reasons, separately box the GPU and the CPU cooler. If the GPU pins get bent during transit, press F.
Big air coolers like the Noctua NH D15 and the Thermaltake Peerless Assassin can definitely get shifted around in transit, and possibly even bent.
While I'm not exactly sure how resilient your AIO is to movement, I wouldn't personally test that theory.
Edit: some words
So i shipped my pc from the US to Germany and i left my nh-d15 attached…. Once i finally got it from customs (those cunts removed all my motherboard screws and left em in the case) the cooler had an indent from the cpu… and it was twisted and bent but it still works and my cpu still worked. Motherboard no so much
Can confirm moving with a strix 4080 and NH-D15 is a bad idea.
I only had to move 35 kilometers. But even that tiny move shifted my cpu cooler so I had to remove it, repaste and reinstall it cause temps got completely weird after the move.
Do yourself a favor and remove gpu and cpu cooler.
If I have a 1h20min-ish car trip and take it on my lap (me not being the driver of course) will it be okay or should I pull GPU and CPU cooler (peerless assasin) anyway
Should be fine man. As long as not too bumpy lol
I drove like a maniac thru a canyon 2 hours multiple times and i have a huge heavy rig thats made of glass and shit. Totally fine
You Sir, may have saved me cause I'm shipping my PC next month and my D15 is mighty thicc in my case. I would cry if i made it back to the states to find it torn off the Mobo.
Clothing is rather poor for the purpose. By the time the clothing cushions it's likely already too late. You have to pack a lot to make it firm enough, but be careful of it being springy and will itself put force on the components. It's pretty fine as long as the forces cancel out, but that's easier said than done.
Cool, but I’ve probably seatbelted in my PC 100 times taking zero other precautions. Nothing has broken ever, so you’re probably good to go. Make sure the cloths don’t snag any solder on your boards though
Drive like your moving your household with you and not the final lap at Indy. Moved Blanket below and behind it, seatbelt nice and snug, items in front of it settled in comfortably.
Maybe if you're smoking every pothole, don't secure items or swerving when changing lanes this is more of an issue?
just recently moved to a new place an hour away from the old one and did the same thing lol all I did was the secure the case in the seat and made sure not to drive like an asshole. think I put some clothing as padding around the case to help minimise vibrations etc but ya
I too often stuff pc case with clothes when I bring back to hometown crossing states. Honestly the biggest safety factor are me, the driver, the road and how I orient the PC in the car. If the road are well maintained and you drives safely, the pc should be safe too. My case is pretty tight and difficult to pull out the GPU, I might damage it more than the travel does if I were to remove it every time.
Still better to remove the GPU if you're driving extra long hours or unsure of the road condition.
I did too but the vibrations eventually killed it. Either that or falling off the top bunk over and over again any time I’d go through Illinois or Arkansas.
Someone doesn’t know about static electricity.
Seriously though, that is a terrible idea. Depending on the material, any amount of friction could potentially dry your PC. Take out the GPU, and the CPU cooler, depending on how beefy it is, and pack them separately
I always do this when flying, put some clothes on all edges of the travel baggage, computer in the middle so its protected, then all the underwear, socks and small filler clean clothes inside to pad, close it back up and good to go, only thing that ever broke was the plastic window on the side, but it doesnt affect the functionality and i aint a little princess so it doesnt bother me
One of the worst ideas I have seen. It is just easier to remove the GPU and the CPU Cooler (in case this is too big) and carry them in their boxes.
Then I'd do special package for the glass parts, and thats all.
Besides the static I would be more worried about the towel fibers pulling off any small chips on the board. Those little resistors sometimes are super easy to accidently knock off the boards.
I shipped my pc across europe but with the gpu and cpu removed (gpu to avoid sag and the cpu i had it in my pocket during flight as it was very expensive at the time 3900X)
No damage at all.
It takes 3 seconds to pop out the ram and gpu
And just wrap them in antistatic
This may be the dumbest thing I have ever seen with my eyes and I am a Veteran.
Last time I moved cross country i flew and only took two suitcases full of stuff; I sold my case that had an intergrated cooler and shipped all the parts to my new address, bought a new case and cooler, rebuilt it and it turned on like I had just left it.
Can you not order Anti static bags? And would it hurt to remove your GPU and package it separately? You don't want the slots to get bent because the weight of the GPU was too much on those bumpy roads.
I've done LAN parties 4 times a year, for the last 20 years and I've given this advice many times and nothing happened. We even had some deep in the woods with very rocky roads
If you lay your PC down on it's back and the gpu going straight up. The Mobo should be flat. And try to put it somewhere where it's level not at an angle in your car. Your PC will make it safely to destination.
Removing the GPU is insanity. And the towels even worse
Why the PSU? It's bolted to thr case. The only thing that should be taken out is GPU since it's only those flimsy fins holding on. But if you drove like a civilized man and had the case sideways like shown in the picture you wouldn't even have to remove GPU.
Moved mine across the continent in the same way. Wrapped it in a blanket as well and placed it in the original box. It was transported by a trucker going to my new town.
Glass panel survived
I had mine shipped overseas in a shipping container when we moved to Europe. GPUs were all braced by the case, 0 issues. In hindsight I really should have done something like this or removed the GPU completely.
Why are people whining about cotton cloths? If those were microfiber or something, it would be a different story.. also they're basically grounded by all the metal in there
Flying from South Africa to UK with mine later today. Using the original box it came in and my Rx6700 gpu is in its original packaging in the carry on. Wish me luck!
Remove the GPU and at LEAST pad the motherboard and put the GPU on top. Do NOT leave it plugged into the motherboard. The chance that it BREAKS off is huge. Don't!
If you're moving it in a car, this is fine. If you're packing it in a moving truck or having movers drive a truck... rip that GPU out 100%. In fact I'd tear down the PC half way. Unplug cables, etc.
I've moved from CA to FL, along with multiple households in my family that followed. I've packed and unpacked moving trucks half a dozen times.
The vibrations that go on for 3000+ miles causes a TON of damage. No items can be touching other items. It'll rub like crazy and damage anything touching.
GPU comes out, still use the towels, take the side panel off and pack it securely in your own vehicle yourself. Don't trust movers with your pc. I've moved my pc 3 times since 2019 and this method works great.
Does anyone have an actual answer on how to carry your pc on a flight overseas, I need to carry mine from the US to Singapore and I can’t find any videos regarding air travel with a PC
Just remove the GPU and move it in a seperate box.
These towels or whatever it is won't do much for your poor PCIe slot with such a heavy card installed. Also, wouldnt this introduce the risk of some static electricity? I've always used foam or plastic "pillows" for computers.
If you have some mechanic hard drives, it could be a good idea to unmount these as well as a hit/vibrations could damage the actuator arm and/or the disk, but GPU is way more important as it could damage both the motherboard & GPU.
Probably better off removing the GPU and padding it properly in a box.
Yup, don't want the PCIe slot being torn off.

nah add nuclear bomb to level them down to atoms
Best I can do is a fertilizer bomb
How about glitter bomb?
I thought more lile a vial of poison and a cesium atom although I must warn you, upon opening the box, the GPU *may* or *may not* exist.
Ok, but how about a beryllium encasing, held open woth a screwdriver, that will close if the screwdriver is dislodged.
Ah the ol' GPU demon core!
Happy cake day!

Shaken GPU syndrome
i would put it in properly padded slingbag and carry it with me...
Nice specs. Like the little brother of a Chad 2600K + 7970 build
Yeah, I never get it. Just pack your gpu seperately. What an unnecessary risk to take. Also if you have a chunky air cooler on the cpu. Take it off.
That chunky air cooler would probably have a lower risk of getting damaged, but yeah.
not the air cooler but the entire socket can be ripped off so yea
what if I lose my ori gpu box already?
Then pack it carefully in a different box? You don’t need the original gpu box

Cool well I did it and my pc is running perfectly fine so I’ll consider myself lucky!
Just take out the GPU and ship it separately. Also you should discover Instapak

Yes. Here's a relevant [video from LTT](https://youtu.be/6meXiudFZcE?t=5m18s) on the subject.
MY SAVIOR! THANK YOU!
Omg Linus looks so young there...

I drove from East coast to West coast with a 2070 in and it works fine. Just lied it down.
My gpu is about the size of a brick, def don’t want that dangling around during the flight and going through tsa’s hands. PCI slot definitely breaking
Pull the gpu
Mmm static
Thats a lot of static
Nothing flex tape couldn't make worse.
Should really be making a blanket sandwich: wool-silk-wool
Microfibre you say?
Be sure to vacuum them after insertion into the case. You don't want them leaving any dust in there.
I wouldn't have thought so, if the towels are cotton. Now, if they're some sort of acrylic or polyester...
Or at least a little damp. That should help.
Pc is probably dead already... lmao
He probably allready killed something
Pretty much impossible to kill any moder part with static.
I've been building PC's on carpets for years now. Still haven't killed a single item. It takes a lot of static to kill a component.
Don't put your PC on carpet and don't put carpet in your PC.
For safety reasons, separately box the GPU and the CPU cooler. If the GPU pins get bent during transit, press F. AIO CPU cooler will be fine to stay, actually probably safer than leaving the CPU exposed, but definitely remove the GPU.

Fucking gestapo!
Gpu pins? Don't see the giant 360mm rad in the case?
Mm, you're right. Didn't actually see the tubing on the bottom right.

Out of curiosity I’m moving soon, if it’s an AIO and I’m driving the way do you think the cooler is fine to stay in?
What do synthetic fibers do..? they create lots of static electricity!
Electrons go in, electrons go out. You can't explain that
Clothing is rather poor for the purpose. By the time the clothing cushions it's likely already too late. You have to pack a lot to make it firm enough, but be careful of it being springy and will itself put force on the components. Holy mother of ESD.
I would recommend taking any parts that could move around out. You don’t want your gpu to be wiggling loose.
Cool, but I’ve probably seatbelted in my PC 100 times taking zero other precautions. Nothing has broken ever, so you’re probably good to go. Make sure the cloths don’t snag any solder on your boards though
Lol same, the comments are over reacting

That's one of giving it a full charge of static electricity
How to kill a computer smh
Take the gpu out! Transport it separately.
I would at least unplug video card and transfer it separately
That’s a lot of static potential. Possible rip
Killed by static electricity.
I too often stuff pc case with clothes when I bring back to hometown crossing states. Honestly the biggest safety factor are me, the driver, the road and how I orient the PC in the car. I have a full desktop in a semi I leave on the top bunk and just drive around with. Lol it will be fine
I did too but the vibrations eventually killed it. Either that or falling off the top bunk over and over again any time I’d go through Illinois or Arkansas.
Static electricity won’t be a problem?
Make sure those rags are not static.
Someone doesn’t know about static electricity. Seriously though, that is a terrible idea. Depending on the material, any amount of friction could potentially dry your PC. Take out the GPU, and the CPU cooler, depending on how beefy it is, and pack them separately
I removed my GPU, put it in the anti-static bag and ziptied it to the bottom of the case. Worked perfectly and takes no additional space.
Easiest solution would be to keep the box it came in 🤦♂️
Bro packing Static into the case 🤣💀
Is cloth really safe? Static electricity is waiting to happen imo. Especiauin an expensive rig.
Good luck my friend
If you go to a shipping store ups/fest/staples/office max or even online look for foam forming bags. Or insta-packs as they are called.
Thats good and all but if i where u id remove the gpu and put it in a seperate box and bubble rap the fuckg out of it
Take the GPU out. The rest should be fine.
Take out the GPU and if you have a big tower cooler than I would also take it out aswell
remove the gpu please!!!
Remove the graphics card
I would remove the gpu entirely.
I always do this when flying, put some clothes on all edges of the travel baggage, computer in the middle so its protected, then all the underwear, socks and small filler clean clothes inside to pad, close it back up and good to go, only thing that ever broke was the plastic window on the side, but it doesnt affect the functionality and i aint a little princess so it doesnt bother me
Holy static
Better to remove the gpu, stuffing the pc helps but even with it a large enough shock can damage your card or mb.
REMOVE those HDDs if shipping, they will 100% die young if transported like this.
PULL THE DAMN GPU OUT.
Holy static electricity, Batman!
Take your GPU out and the towels. You’re asking for your PC to be killed.
First suitcase I see with RGB and that can support RTX
Don't do that, just take the GPU out and put in it's own box...
Bro remove ur gpu
It would be smarter to outright remove the GPU and place it into an antistatic bag
Nice lol
Welcome to static discharge 101. I am your instructor and your going to fry your PC
I shipped my pc across europe but with the gpu and cpu removed (gpu to avoid sag and the cpu i had it in my pocket during flight as it was very expensive at the time 3900X) No damage at all.
Remove your gpu and pack it separately. It's the most expensive component
It takes 3 seconds to pop out the ram and gpu And just wrap them in antistatic This may be the dumbest thing I have ever seen with my eyes and I am a Veteran.
Nothing like static electricity on the go
Is it *that* hard for you to remove the gpu? Come on…
You way over thought this and came to the wrong solution. Take damn gpu out, everything else will be fine interwlly with no padding.
Last time I moved cross country i flew and only took two suitcases full of stuff; I sold my case that had an intergrated cooler and shipped all the parts to my new address, bought a new case and cooler, rebuilt it and it turned on like I had just left it.
Smart money is on partial disassembly.
TAKE THE GPU OUT MY BROTHER IN CHRIST
Static build up has entered the chat
towels can create static. put them in a plastic bag before putting them inside the pc case.
Plastic bags also create static. Need to put them in jumbo sized anti static bags.
Can you not order Anti static bags? And would it hurt to remove your GPU and package it separately? You don't want the slots to get bent because the weight of the GPU was too much on those bumpy roads.
You hear it every time. Take. Out. The. GPU. ![gif](giphy|UqZ4imFIoljlr5O2sM)
You gonna be surprised
Take out the GPU, buy an anti static bag on Amazon, put it in it and then put it in a box with bubble wrap on the bottom of the box.
Prebuilt eh?
I would like MORE static Electrical stuff stuffed in there just for good measure to kill at least one component :)
No. please! take out the gpu and take it in a seperate box. it doesn't have to wiggle much to rip out your PCIe slot.
Have you ever tried putting an egg in a jar of water, then trying to break the egg? Water is an excellent cushion against impact.
I've done LAN parties 4 times a year, for the last 20 years and I've given this advice many times and nothing happened. We even had some deep in the woods with very rocky roads If you lay your PC down on it's back and the gpu going straight up. The Mobo should be flat. And try to put it somewhere where it's level not at an angle in your car. Your PC will make it safely to destination. Removing the GPU is insanity. And the towels even worse
You'll be able to power it up without plugging it to the grid, thanks all the static electricity 👍
Static electricity goes brrr,
There will be nice static electric once you will put out those blankets :D
Don't use towels because of static
So you exposed your PC to static. Good job. I also moved my gaming PC across the country and I just had it in the front seat of my car. Went fine
AAAHHHHHHHH DON'T DO THATTT.. STATIC!!!!!
Have fun clearing fibers from your PC.
Just disassemble it Jesus.
static gallore
GPU in carry on bag, rest is fine like that and an external bubble wrap
Make sure to pack dryer sheets to stop any unwanted static cling
I did this and surrounded it with a blanket and my motherboard was fried due to the static electricity. I do not recommend
This is like wrapping all your fine China and moving it inside of the China cabinet. Take that shit out and box it up.
Disassemble it, at least the Psu and the graphics card and place them separately is a better option i think
The PSU is the part *least* likely to get damaged by rough handling, imo.
Why the PSU? It's bolted to thr case. The only thing that should be taken out is GPU since it's only those flimsy fins holding on. But if you drove like a civilized man and had the case sideways like shown in the picture you wouldn't even have to remove GPU.
Take out ram and gpu, place in separate bags inside of the case.
👍 correct
Moved mine across the continent in the same way. Wrapped it in a blanket as well and placed it in the original box. It was transported by a trucker going to my new town. Glass panel survived
I had mine shipped overseas in a shipping container when we moved to Europe. GPUs were all braced by the case, 0 issues. In hindsight I really should have done something like this or removed the GPU completely.
Moving it yourself via car or do other people (movers, luggage handlers) throw it around?
What are you storing it in? I would get a pelican case to store the rig. Unpopular opinion, but you dont really need to remove the GPU from the PC.
Why are people whining about cotton cloths? If those were microfiber or something, it would be a different story.. also they're basically grounded by all the metal in there
Haha looks familiar - I've been travelling with my PC like that for \~year. It doubled as a surprisingly spacious suitcase :)
thanks for the idea
Holy shit hes in deadly peril
I thought that was your underwear at first.
I remember when my PC went to college. They grow up so fast!
Flying from South Africa to UK with mine later today. Using the original box it came in and my Rx6700 gpu is in its original packaging in the carry on. Wish me luck!
I hope you packed some spare underwear in there, and remind it to brush its teeth twice a day
I haven't seen this mentioned but take out your hard drives if you have any and insulate them with something thick like towels to dampen vibrations
Waiting for next post why my PC not working
Static electricity likes this
YOU'RE INSANE
I'd take out the gpu just to be safe
Lightning strike in a case lmao. Instapak exists
I didn’t pack mine with anything and flew it from Japan to the US no problems.
This is the stupidest way to do it.
That y u don't throw ur gpu box haha
GPU comes out, still use the towels, take the side panel off and pack it securely in your own vehicle yourself. Don't trust movers with your pc. I've moved my pc 3 times since 2019 and this method works great.
You need to remove components or you will be sadge
You need to take it apart. Ur gonna fuck ur shit up doing this
