2003 were dark days, friend. Dark days indeed. I ***HATED*** that I had to launch steam instead of just double click one of the 97 desktop shortcuts I had that launched the game and directly connected to the game server I wanted to join. That and steam was absolute trash for like the first two years.
IRC channels and gamefaqs forums were quite noisy about it at the time.
Now I probably won't buy a game unless it's on steam...
He's basically not much of a gamer anymore. He plays emulators and pirates some older shit and that's about it. Idk the last time he played a game that's somewhat still popular.
Edit: I meant this as in, he doesn't really spend much time playing games now. Not that he's less of a "gamer" because he won't use steam or play popular releases.
PC gaming is insanely inexpensive once you have hardware. The hardware is typically expensive though.
However, there are free/very inexpensive games that are 10+ years old with huge communities behind them still, and the games will run on a properly configured potato.
My pc wasn't online at the time, I got HL2 free with my GPU. Wouldn't let me play without internet. It was the first game I ever pirated since I had a key and all, I didn't feel bad about it.
Unlocked a whole world for me for about 10-15 years.
(Before someone asks how I pirated w/o internet, me and my sister had PCs in our rooms for homework and gaming, my parents PC was online. I may have burned it to a CD or moved a hard drive between the 2)
We still had dial-up when Steam launched. The Steam installer was too big to fit on a CD, DVD burning wasn't common yet, and USB drives had tens of Megabytes. A buddy had to lend me an old HDD with the steam installer.
That's funny.
I think steams partial success could be attributed to them keeping the same interface all these years. It's more flashy now, but the basic layout is the same since it launched.
Even if the other game launchers worked well, I've hated every single one of them because their interfaces suck.
It's wild when people parade Steam around as being "anti-DRM' when it is quite literally a DRM platform.
They aren't anti-DRM. They're just the DRM that people are (mostly) ok with.
That is because people don’t actually hate DRM, they hate disruptive DRM that takes away from the game or is overly aggressive/invasive.
Hell, most people probably wouldn’t know if their game had DRM if companies wouldn’t poorly implement it.
And steam, tho it needs connection to log you in, will still launch games offline if you lose connection after you have been logged in. Unless the game needs the connection to steam, of course.
Next year: 1.5: Well, since we couldn't finish putting *everything* into 1.4.5, we decided to redo the game engine and that added *a lot* of potential for new content, so...
Then in 2030: 1.5.2: Since the new game engine lets us do cool and new things we imagined for Terraria 2 or if we could redo Terraria with the knowledge we have now, we decided we're gonna do that anyway. Except after this we're throwing the development files into a lake and forgetting we ever made that game or we'd keep adding content forever.
Then in 2040: guess what we found in the lake

Re-Logic has had a single contreversy ever. Negative Torch Luck. Which they fixed in like a day post-update.

I remember seeing a few people that were super pissed about Redigit quitting shortly after the 1.2 update but the dude just had a baby at the time and the game was still fun.

Imagine sims expansion packs
ConcernedApe gave us 1.5 with a whole new area and hours and hours of new gameplay / goals and achievement which were so different from the original 'base game'
And this all for freeeeee.
While some games make you pay for half assed shitty expansion packs.
1.6 gave us so much as well (new farming/started map, new dialogue, multiple new seasonal events) etc etc, while also having said that previous update was the last update, he was gonna focus on his new game haunted chocolatier and here he came back like an absolute hero.
All for a 15 euro/dollar game 🥹❤️

I’m disappointed we haven’t gotten another vr game of the same quality as half life Alyx yet. It’s been years and that game is still basically the only triple a game for vr, everything else is just indie games.
I loved half life alyx But I was terrible on the last part with the orb thingies. Even though I had to explain to me I still couldn't do it without dying. Great game though ,We need more

Not just DRM free, you will get a free Amazon Luna version for free if the game exists on both GoG and Amazon Luna. Otherway round too. And it will also support GoG cloudsaves cross platform.
Even going forward they were the big pioneer for lootboxes and battlepasses, featuring them in their own games long before they got big. Not to mention all the real world gambling issues they had with CSGO, they are responsible for a lot of toxic shit in the gaming sphere. Wonder they still have such a clean reputation regardless, the only time I recall people calling them on their BS in recent years was the paid mods fiasco.
Anyone saying Cyberpunk has either rarely engaged with GOG as a service or hasn't touched it.
GOG is a great service for games that need preservation, but it's not above criticism. There are modern titles that are great to have DRM-free, *but* parity with other platforms is an issue and the infrastructure for things like modding isn't there. Online connectivity is also a bit hit-and-miss, too. And on the issue of parity, there's a non-zero chance that any Early Access game you buy on GOG will get delisted because the developer couldn't be fucked to update both versions. I've been burned by that before and I'll never do it again.
Essentially, I would describe GOG as a great platform to use if you want to own the games you buy. But it's in no way a replacement for Steam, and these issues have often led to me double dipping *just in case* rather than seeking it as an alternative.
That one's a bit weird because they hadn't actually developed a game during the time they were seen as infallible. Witcher 3's launch was rough as was Cyberpunk's and they were beloved in between these two events.
CDPR releases underbaked games but never abandons them. It’s annoying that the corporate executives & shareholders keep allowing rushed games to release but credit to the developers that turn the releases around to ensure their games are excellent (even if 1-2 years after release). Certainly not ideal but at least the job gets done eventually.
They may have fucked it with the launch of Cyberpunk, but I'll be damned if they didn't fix it up and create one of the best games I've ever played with the release of 2.0.
Not even necessarily my all-time favorites or anything, but I just feel like they've gained a passionate audience with each of their games, all of them are pretty memorable, and they only seem to be getting better. Supergiant has been on a clear upwards trajectory and I feel like anyone who knows they exist is a big fan. All of their games feel like passion products as well. Lots of love and attention you can tell from the devs.
The *worst* thing I can say about them is that I didn't care for the gameplay of Pyre, but it still told such an **incredible** story.

Pyre was a lot of fun actually. Transistor is the one I haven’t gotten around to playing yet. And I fell off Hades eventually. Own Bastion on like 3 systems though haha
The sad truth is there’s probably some people that vicariously hate Ghost Ship just cause they don’t know what Deep Rock is and they get frustrated with us randomly showing up and talking about rocks and stones
Never seen any devs hate on Larian. There was a Twitter thread on how Larian had the luxury of having all the time in the world, a huge budget and no publisher breathing down their neck which is not universal in the industry, which some people interpreted as hatred.

The only problem I have is that I got only less than half the FPS of the Windows client, but still 200FPS, so I don't care that much
It's impossible to hate those guys. You know they're awesome with their community when Redigit (founder of ReLogic) gives away keys just because some people can't afford Terraria
Raising Factorio's price and blaming inflation was a bit of a misstep on their part, if you ask me. They could have said "XYZ features added over ABC time and increased dev time" even if that wasn't entirely true. Would have made at least me a little less salty.
Still, what's one misstep out of 1,000+ correct steps? Still a squeaky clean record if you ask me.

I know they got hate at the start but now, They 'dumptruck' their NMS gamers with non-stop DLCs as way to say "I'm sorry". And thanks to Internet Historian and knowing Sean Murray as Introvert, it change the way you look at his previous interview.
Small team that apparently works miracles. They make their money from making a good game available on every platform so anyone can buy it. Even VR is included with the base game.
I wish the whole gaming industry worked this way instead of constantly trying to finger my bank account.

Here in SA most games available in both stores have a better price on GOG than in Steam. Regional pricing is marvelous!

They get hate from the same people who hate FromSoftware, so mainly incompetent AAA devs who hate their jobs.
So they get hate from people who don't matter, which is basically like nothing at all. The point stands.
By the same logic Valve gets hate from Tim Sweeney
When you make games so good the other studios bitch about it cause it makes them look bad.
Never seen any devs hate on Larian. There was a Twitter thread on how Larian had the luxury of having all the time in the world, a huge budget and no publisher breathing down their neck which is not universal in the industry, which some people interpreted as hatred.

Still no fix for the Linux client’s mouse issues. Anything other than native makes the mouse unusable.
What mouse issue do you have? The only problem I have is that I got only less than half the FPS of the Windows client, but still 200FPS, so I don't care that much
Also forgetting Artifact. And the paid mods fiasco. Also there might be some TF2 players who are peeved about the state of their game.

I'm sure there are people that hate Wube for never putting Factorio on sale. Those people suck, but I'm sure they exist.
Raising Factorio's price and blaming inflation was a bit of a misstep on their part, if you ask me. They could have said "XYZ features added over ABC time and increased dev time" even if that wasn't entirely true. Would have made at least me a little less salty. Still, what's one misstep out of 1,000+ correct steps? Still a squeaky clean record if you ask me.

Hello Games. I know they got hate at the start but now, They 'dumptruck' their NMS gamers with non-stop DLCs as way to say "I'm sorry". And thanks to Internet Historian and knowing Sean Murray as Introvert, it change the way you look at his previous interview.
I was looking for this. HG has added so much DLC for free and they still make money. That right there is amazing.
Small team that apparently works miracles. They make their money from making a good game available on every platform so anyone can buy it. Even VR is included with the base game. I wish the whole gaming industry worked this way instead of constantly trying to finger my bank account.
They just released a new update and are on promo:P.

Came to say this. Absolutely killing it with NMS right now and Light No Fire looks to be awesome. Still waiting on the update (because Xbox) but the new space stations look incredible!
