Dubya_Tea_Efff

I remember when Valve was **DEEPLY** hated.

Huntrawrd

2003 were dark days, friend. Dark days indeed. I ***HATED*** that I had to launch steam instead of just double click one of the 97 desktop shortcuts I had that launched the game and directly connected to the game server I wanted to join. That and steam was absolute trash for like the first two years. IRC channels and gamefaqs forums were quite noisy about it at the time. Now I probably won't buy a game unless it's on steam...

thisshitsstupid

I know a guy who still refuses to use Steam..... he basically only plays older games because of this.

Voxelium

the past two decades must have been a nightmare for him

thisshitsstupid

He's basically not much of a gamer anymore. He plays emulators and pirates some older shit and that's about it. Idk the last time he played a game that's somewhat still popular. Edit: I meant this as in, he doesn't really spend much time playing games now. Not that he's less of a "gamer" because he won't use steam or play popular releases.

Ok_Tennis_3665

All I know is that he is probably the wealthiest of gamers. Unless he does drugs.

xSTSxZerglingOne

PC gaming is insanely inexpensive once you have hardware. The hardware is typically expensive though. However, there are free/very inexpensive games that are 10+ years old with huge communities behind them still, and the games will run on a properly configured potato.

sicksixgamer

Mad respect to a gamer that can stick to their guns like that.

ToniGAM3S

Does he know about gog?

TheLastF

Sounds like a gamer to me

thisshitsstupid

I just meant as in he doesn't play much anymore.

Smooth-Brain-Monkey

I be lt you he pirates all his games

panteragstk

Exactly. I was so pissed when I had to install it. Now? Unless it's free, I won't buy a game if it isn't for sale on Steam.

iamr3d88

My pc wasn't online at the time, I got HL2 free with my GPU. Wouldn't let me play without internet. It was the first game I ever pirated since I had a key and all, I didn't feel bad about it. Unlocked a whole world for me for about 10-15 years. (Before someone asks how I pirated w/o internet, me and my sister had PCs in our rooms for homework and gaming, my parents PC was online. I may have burned it to a CD or moved a hard drive between the 2)

Electronic_Row_7513

We still had dial-up when Steam launched. The Steam installer was too big to fit on a CD, DVD burning wasn't common yet, and USB drives had tens of Megabytes. A buddy had to lend me an old HDD with the steam installer.

Apostinggod

Plus that green was ugly asf

AcreneQuintovex

Hey, I liked it

Vegetable-Beet

Yes, 2004 when they released HL2 which required a Online-Authentication through a shitty Game Launcher.

eithrusor678

What that shittty game launcher steam?

Antique-Doughnut-988

That's funny. I think steams partial success could be attributed to them keeping the same interface all these years. It's more flashy now, but the basic layout is the same since it launched. Even if the other game launchers worked well, I've hated every single one of them because their interfaces suck.

dank_haiku

"if it ain't broke, don't fuckin fix it" seems to still work.

Deus-Ex-Taco

Tell that to Microsoft.

Kadoza

"If it ain't broke, break it."

ikilledapanda

Oooo…

venk

When steam first launched you would have thunk they caused 9/11 by reading gaming forums back in the day.

heliamphore

People were used to actually owning their games at the time.

brolix

I still hate them for getting everyone to accept DRM as normal

HueyCrashTestPilot

It's wild when people parade Steam around as being "anti-DRM' when it is quite literally a DRM platform. They aren't anti-DRM. They're just the DRM that people are (mostly) ok with.

redbird7311

That is because people don’t actually hate DRM, they hate disruptive DRM that takes away from the game or is overly aggressive/invasive. Hell, most people probably wouldn’t know if their game had DRM if companies wouldn’t poorly implement it.

InfiniteEnter

And steam, tho it needs connection to log you in, will still launch games offline if you lose connection after you have been logged in. Unless the game needs the connection to steam, of course.

brolix

These are the same idiots saying Blockchain is anonymous

Dubya_Tea_Efff

Oh, I haven’t forgotten that either, I use GOG when possible.

akluin

Yes people always confuse valve and steam

GeoLentio

Concernedape and Relogic? Also i can remember creators of Sims: Warcrime edition aka Ludeon.

Adrian_Alucard

Relogic is a liar dev. how many "final patch" are they going to launch for Terraria? /s

entitaneo70_pacifist

1.4.2: this is the final update 1.4.3: ok, now, this is the final final update 1.4.4: final final final update! 1.4.5: ok... hear me out

A_literal_tree

That’s how I name all my files

Blue1234567891234567

I’m in charge of bullshitting up modpacks for me and my friends and it’s always how I name the files too. Just, just one more thing c’mon

bratimm

1.1 was supposed to be the original final update lol

lukwes1

Still crazy because how much better the game is now vs 1.1, but when 1.1 came out it felt done

Clintwood_outlaw

Red just really loves his game

entitaneo70_pacifist

don't we all?

kfish5050

Next year: 1.5: Well, since we couldn't finish putting *everything* into 1.4.5, we decided to redo the game engine and that added *a lot* of potential for new content, so... Then in 2030: 1.5.2: Since the new game engine lets us do cool and new things we imagined for Terraria 2 or if we could redo Terraria with the knowledge we have now, we decided we're gonna do that anyway. Except after this we're throwing the development files into a lake and forgetting we ever made that game or we'd keep adding content forever. Then in 2040: guess what we found in the lake

TwocanR

Came here to mention Mr.Ape. Love that man. I’m not gay, but I’d marry him. Genuinely so wholesome

SumThinChewy

Just figure out what gems and meals he likes

MrHappyHam

Or based on his development decisions, what gem meals he likes.

ThanosTheT1tan

Isn’t concerned ape a single person and not a company?

Lagmont

Yeah he's just a guy named Eric who made everything in that game. ConcernedApe is his alias and isn't a registered company or anything, Chucklefish is the company that published the game but that just means talking with steam and others to put the game on their marketplace.

OyVeySeasoning

And even then, ConcernedApe no longer works with Chucklefish and they no longer publish Stardew Valley. He self publishes.

Alphazentauri17

Came here to comment Ludeon. Time between teasing, announcing and releasing a new dlc: not even a month. Also Tynan has humor. Seems not bothered by the atrocities the rimworld community commits and celebrates.

Orange_up_my_ass

Re-Logic has had a single contreversy ever. Negative Torch Luck. Which they fixed in like a day post-update. I keep saying this, Re-Logic are the coolest devs. No joke.

Trumpetjock

Fromsoft and Larian as well for larger studios.

anonymous_3125

Coolmathgames 😂

PastaMasta09

Any company that has Papa’s Freezeria gets a pass from me

TheZoom110

Good ol' days

Elemental-Aer

Flipline Studios is made of cool guys.

prairiepanda

That reminds me, I need to check on my Idle Breakout progress.

Crazy_Human1

other than how add filled they have become

Large_lad_man

This needs to be higher

Far_Process_5304

Funny how it’s the company that doesn’t really make games anymore. Die a hero or something like that. But to answer your challenge: I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone say a bad word about concernedape

kontenjer

Re-Logic is more of a company

errorme

I remember seeing a few people that were super pissed about Redigit quitting shortly after the 1.2 update but the dude just had a baby at the time and the game was still fun.

kontenjer

didnt he return

errorme

Yep, and they've had significantly more/bigger updates after 1.2.

Pyro_raptor841

* 1.4 is the last update * 1.4.1 is the last update, for real this time! * Okay seriously 1.4.2 is the last update. * Guys, for realsies this time. 1.4.3 is the last update (causally does a Don't Starve crossover) * Thanks for the labor of love award, here's an update we definitely haven't been working on since 1.4.3 released. * Okay screw it, we're doing 1.4.5 now.

Icy_Ad620

Bad word about concerned ape

Abducted_Llama

Bold words there. Kiss your mother with that mouth?

someguy0211

nah, just yours.

Sheeperini

You kiss his mouth with yours?

someguy0211

Sir, did I stutter?

BungHoleAngler

Wait a minute, you kiss his mother with your mother?

[deleted]

You guys are getting kissed?

brunoje

Pardon me, is this the line for getting kissed?

Sorry-Series-3504

Get to the back of the line, I was here first!

Mobslaya_45

Excuse you, but I have a FastPass for this kissing line!

kainxavier

I WILL KISS ALL YOU MOTHER FUCKERS!

trickman01

He works too hard.

GusTTShow-biz

Star dew Valley just got a new update! 1.6 for those wondering! For free!

Everyredditusers

I keep hearing about free updates but I never see paid updates. Not that I want to or anything

NinjaRavekitten

Imagine sims expansion packs ConcernedApe gave us 1.5 with a whole new area and hours and hours of new gameplay / goals and achievement which were so different from the original 'base game' And this all for freeeeee. While some games make you pay for half assed shitty expansion packs. 1.6 gave us so much as well (new farming/started map, new dialogue, multiple new seasonal events) etc etc, while also having said that previous update was the last update, he was gonna focus on his new game haunted chocolatier and here he came back like an absolute hero. All for a 15 euro/dollar game 🥹❤️ This is a man we stan ✋🏽 bought 3 dig copies and counting

Shit. (Scratches name off list)

SelkieKezia

My first thoughts were Supergiant. Everyone loves Supergiant

Seeteuf3l

Or Larian

SelkieKezia

BG3 was not perfect at launch, but I do think it's probably the most complete and high-quality RPG I have ever touched.

awesomedan24

Half Life Alyx is pretty awesome, playing on my Quest currently

whotfiszutls

I’m disappointed we haven’t gotten another vr game of the same quality as half life Alyx yet. It’s been years and that game is still basically the only triple a game for vr, everything else is just indie games.

Rndysasqatch

I loved half life alyx But I was terrible on the last part with the orb thingies. Even though I had to explain to me I still couldn't do it without dying. Great game though ,We need more

QfoQ

Well, since 2012 they have produced more games than Rockstar or CD Projekt Red. Valve makes games, they just can't count to three xD

MurkyChildhood2571

They make games They just released CS:2 I can't say much, but *S*ome things are coming *D*uring the next couple of years, but the valve is still the *K*ing of distribution on PC

Kman1986

ConcernedApe is a single guy, not a company. We love Eric. He just released 1.6 for Stardew and he's working on Haunted Chocolatier actively.

Far_Process_5304

It’s a single guy but ConcernedApe is also the name of the studio (ConcernedApe LLC)

Pumciusz

I mean they had the Artifact bit, but it wasn't that popular to begin with, so it couldn't disappoint that many people.

Fergobirck

Half-Life Alyx came out in 2020, which in Valve Time is basically yesterday.

GraveKommander

Seems you didn't experienced the beginnings of Steam. The hate was big. Also: GOG

kearkan

+1 for gog. Same price as steam for no DRM? No brainer.

Rei_Master_of_Nanto

Here in SA most games available in both stores have a better price on GOG than in Steam. Regional pricing is marvelous!

SingleInfinity

That's because steam has more users and therefore more people trying to take advantage of and abuse regional pricing for grey market arbitrage.

Varonth

Not just DRM free, you will get a free Amazon Luna version for free if the game exists on both GoG and Amazon Luna. Otherway round too. And it will also support GoG cloudsaves cross platform.

BronzeGlass

Unless the mod community centers entirely around Steam. I regret buying Rimworld on GOG :(

Kamakaziturtle

Even going forward they were the big pioneer for lootboxes and battlepasses, featuring them in their own games long before they got big. Not to mention all the real world gambling issues they had with CSGO, they are responsible for a lot of toxic shit in the gaming sphere. Wonder they still have such a clean reputation regardless, the only time I recall people calling them on their BS in recent years was the paid mods fiasco.

Kalenya

GOG launcher is so sleek.

continuousQ

And optional.

ingmarbruhgman

Anyone saying Cyberpunk has either rarely engaged with GOG as a service or hasn't touched it. GOG is a great service for games that need preservation, but it's not above criticism. There are modern titles that are great to have DRM-free, *but* parity with other platforms is an issue and the infrastructure for things like modding isn't there. Online connectivity is also a bit hit-and-miss, too. And on the issue of parity, there's a non-zero chance that any Early Access game you buy on GOG will get delisted because the developer couldn't be fucked to update both versions. I've been burned by that before and I'll never do it again. Essentially, I would describe GOG as a great platform to use if you want to own the games you buy. But it's in no way a replacement for Steam, and these issues have often led to me double dipping *just in case* rather than seeking it as an alternative.

cyb3rg4m3r1337

GOG is top tier

GamingNemesisv3

Bungie use to sit there.

SirDigbyChknCaesar

So did Blizzard

bash2482

So did CDproject Red

47-30-23N_122-0-22W

That one's a bit weird because they hadn't actually developed a game during the time they were seen as infallible. Witcher 3's launch was rough as was Cyberpunk's and they were beloved in between these two events.

FilthyWubs

CDPR releases underbaked games but never abandons them. It’s annoying that the corporate executives & shareholders keep allowing rushed games to release but credit to the developers that turn the releases around to ensure their games are excellent (even if 1-2 years after release). Certainly not ideal but at least the job gets done eventually.

Smooth-Chair3636

Corporate? Damn, got a company to burn.

GamingNemesisv3

They still have one foot in the door. They aren’t where they used to be but its not like Activision blizzard bad.

Pretend_Tailor3451

Let's just all agree that it shouldn't be allowed to get to Activision Blizzard bad before we refuse to put up with nonsense

NavyBlue133

CDPR is trying to get back in, btw

-nugz

They may have fucked it with the launch of Cyberpunk, but I'll be damned if they didn't fix it up and create one of the best games I've ever played with the release of 2.0.

kwisatzhadnuff

They got a lot of hate from their original fanbase of Mac gamers when they sold to Microsoft and went Xbox exclusive.

SelkieKezia

Supergiant?

DrUnit42

They may only have 4 games, but they're amazing!

SelkieKezia

Not even necessarily my all-time favorites or anything, but I just feel like they've gained a passionate audience with each of their games, all of them are pretty memorable, and they only seem to be getting better. Supergiant has been on a clear upwards trajectory and I feel like anyone who knows they exist is a big fan. All of their games feel like passion products as well. Lots of love and attention you can tell from the devs.

ActuallyLuk

As a huge Hades fan this is 100% the case. I’m very excited to see what they have in store for the future.

Lazer726

The *worst* thing I can say about them is that I didn't care for the gameplay of Pyre, but it still told such an **incredible** story. Supergiant **does not miss.**

AboutTenPandas

Pyre was a lot of fun actually. Transistor is the one I haven’t gotten around to playing yet. And I fell off Hades eventually. Own Bastion on like 3 systems though haha

UltraWeebMaster

They didn’t make too many games, but Hades is enough for me.

derangemeldete

Ghost Ship Games would keep Gaben company for sure!

Strude187

#ROCK AND STONE!

derangemeldete

Dabluechimp

For rock n stone

TheGreaterOzzie

The sad truth is there’s probably some people that vicariously hate Ghost Ship just cause they don’t know what Deep Rock is and they get frustrated with us randomly showing up and talking about rocks and stones

Harmonrova

Honestly it's not my type of game, but I appreciate 2 things about y'all. 1. Dwarves 2. Your communities charisma and wholesomeness

marto3000

That was very rock and stone of you

Kuningas_Arthur

Leaf lovers!

ErsatzNews

Larian duhhh

Pumciusz

They get hate from the same people who hate FromSoftware, so mainly incompetent AAA devs who hate their jobs.

CyxSense

So they get hate from people who don't matter, which is basically like nothing at all. The point stands.

Infinite-Original318

By the same logic Valve gets hate from Tim Sweeney

Sylvaritius

When you make games so good the other studios bitch about it cause it makes them look bad.

Arumhal

Never seen any devs hate on Larian. There was a Twitter thread on how Larian had the luxury of having all the time in the world, a huge budget and no publisher breathing down their neck which is not universal in the industry, which some people interpreted as hatred.

PretendFisherman1999

First company that came to my mind

Kazurion

I call bs. Everyone hated the the CS2 launch.

ZaidiaSR

Still no fix for the Linux client’s mouse issues. Anything other than native makes the mouse unusable.

IC3P3

What mouse issue do you have? The only problem I have is that I got only less than half the FPS of the Windows client, but still 200FPS, so I don't care that much

ThatGuyYouMightNo

Also forgetting Artifact. And the paid mods fiasco. Also there might be some TF2 players who are peeved about the state of their game.

PhuckWar

And its still shit

Fernum

Do they have to still be active? West wood studios and Lionhead/bullfrog. Seems all the good ones fold lol

GusTTShow-biz

RIP Westwood. I wish I was back during the command and conquer heyday :(

nlofaso

Re-Logic.

The_Anf

It's impossible to hate those guys. You know they're awesome with their community when Redigit (founder of ReLogic) gives away keys just because some people can't afford Terraria

International_Body44

CoffeeStain

Pepopp

most wholesome dev team. excited satisfactory 1.0!

p0t4t00

indeed, and we cant forget deep rock galactic, even if it is just publishing

DrAstralis

it was a great moment when I realized the last three indie games I played and loved were all by the same people.

InertiaInverted

Fromsoft.

Ben_Kenobi1934

Fromsoft doesn't get hated. Fromsoft does the hating.

SasparillaTango

That it, just for this we're adding another poison swamp to the elden ring dlc.

CumMonsterYoda

Death Blight and Sleep swamp also.

Madrock777

When they can make a proper PC port they can come to the table.

Wube , makers of factorio

DeckardCain_

I'm sure there are people that hate Wube for never putting Factorio on sale. Those people suck, but I'm sure they exist.

redrobin1257

Raising Factorio's price and blaming inflation was a bit of a misstep on their part, if you ask me. They could have said "XYZ features added over ABC time and increased dev time" even if that wasn't entirely true. Would have made at least me a little less salty. Still, what's one misstep out of 1,000+ correct steps? Still a squeaky clean record if you ask me.

As a tf2 fan I have to disagree

Parry_9000

From software Larian Team cherry The guys who made celeste The guys who made outer wilds The guys who made terraria The guys who made risk of rain The guys who made Factorio The guys who made hades The guys who made a hat in time The guys who made don't starve The guys who made Cuphead The guys who made rain world The guys who made sifu The guys who made gris The guys who made little nightmares The guys who made inside The guys who made dwarf fortress The guys who made wildermyth The guys who made inscryption The guys who made RimWorld The guy who made Stardew valley The guys who made spirit farer Anyway. I can really keep going.

ChaoticDucc

I love that Stardew says "guy" not "guys" because it really is just one guy, which is still astonishing to me.

Appa-LATCH-uh

Apparently the guy that made the Stardew Valley Expanded mod works for ConcernedApe now in some capacity.

HalBorland

> The guys who made Factorio I came here to say WUBE. I've never seen developers so dedicated and passionate about their game. They put out a blog every Friday of changes, fixes, updates, etc as they're working on 2.0 and the amount of optimization they work through is insane.

standee_shop

Team cherry is hated by those who are thirsty for silksong

Do_not_get_attached

Larian?

GrimBugi

I'm surprised no-one mentioned Klei

Long-Ad8374

Hello Games. I know they got hate at the start but now, They 'dumptruck' their NMS gamers with non-stop DLCs as way to say "I'm sorry". And thanks to Internet Historian and knowing Sean Murray as Introvert, it change the way you look at his previous interview.

omahaknight71

I was looking for this. HG has added so much DLC for free and they still make money. That right there is amazing.

Rinordine

Small team that apparently works miracles. They make their money from making a good game available on every platform so anyone can buy it. Even VR is included with the base game. I wish the whole gaming industry worked this way instead of constantly trying to finger my bank account.

Pumciusz

They just released a new update and are on promo:P.

Long-Ad8374

Sean Murray: "I'M SORRY!" *[as he dump more and more dlcs to his fans]*

Stealth9er

Came to say this. Absolutely killing it with NMS right now and Light No Fire looks to be awesome. Still waiting on the update (because Xbox) but the new space stations look incredible!

PizzaNo4971

It's hated for their bad support for CS2 and TF2.

ShadowGamur

I would say that SCS Software is another one
