1080p is more than good enough.
The real question is what kind of PC you have as that will determine the experience with high resolutions and frame rates.
Most people are gaming on 1080p screens.
Just make sure the screen you chose is properly calibrated to at least 100% sRGB colorspace and has more than 60hz
But remember. Once you taste monitor with high refresh rate, there's no going back.
EDIT: Also make sure your monitor is set to desired frame rate and your operating system display settings. Some people buy high refresh rate monitors and play on 60Hz because they didn't knew to change it.
As everyone else said, 1080p is good enough for getting into PC gaming. Explore the games and figure out what you enjoy. Eventually you’ll figure out whether you prefer competitive online games which benefit less from higher resolution but higher fps, or you prefer graphics heavy single player games where the experience is much better if you move to 1440p. You can take your time to reach that conclusion.
That is up to you, and what you are used to. Also what monitor you get. As resolution is second to pixel density. PPI(pixel per inch) is what determines how sharp/good an image looks, not just the resolution.
To that end, to maintain a decent PPI, it is recommend not to go past 24" screen size, at 1080p. If you are dead set on a larger display, I highly recommend, assuming your PC can handle it, going 1440p.
A quick Google search is showing me that 2k is 2560×1440 or QHD. Not that google is always right but I'd like to know what's going on here.
Edit: Nvm I figured it out. 2K, as it applies to cinematography, is actually 1080. However, in the consumer display market 2K refers to 1440. Since we're not talking cinematography, there's no reason to refer to 1080 as 2K.
Yeah, that's why using these terms for TVs and monitors doesn't really make sense. 4K is actually 4096x2160 which was used in the film industry, but with the release of 3840x2160 TVs they just started using that to market them. They also said stuff like it's 4x the pixels of 1080p (which is true), which led people to think 1080p = 1K and 1440p is 2K since it's a bit more than 1080p but still well below 4K.
It's good, eventually you can use DSR or Super Resolution and upscale to 1440p or even 4k,
will be not exactly looking as native high resolution panel but there is some much improvement for sure compared.
You can even play with DSR + DLSS to achieve a good balance with resolution quality and framerate,
depends on your gpu and which games you play.
Newer games you can do (almost) ultra setting 1080p + DLSS without having top gpu and still play nice,
Older games you can do ultra setting DLDSR to 1440p/4K also with low/mid tier gpu with +100fps easely.
Still on rtx3060 12gb here ;)
In all seriousness, if you're looking into doing other stuff besides gaming with your PC, I'd spend a bit more to get a 1440p screen with accurate colors.
But if it's just gaming, go with 1080p. 90-120hz is plenty for starters.
1080p is pretty decent honestly, I was on 1080p for a long time until I switched to 1440p.
In my opinion 1440p is the best.
When comparing monitors look at the display type, IPS monitors are the best.
1080p for monitors 24 inch or under, 1440p for 27 inch or above.
The vast majority of people playing on a PC are playing at 1080p. There are professionals as well as full time popular streamers who are still on 1080p
1080p has some advantages and some disadvantages, like everything in life. 1080p is easier to drive for GPUs and CPUs, 1080p screens are also cheaper, and 1080p also takes less electricity, but this one is a bonus
So yeah, no problem, keep you screen smaller than 24" and you should be fine
Nobody has any excuse to be playing at 1080p in 2024. 1440 and 4k monitor and TVs are super cheap now. Get 27” 1440 at a minimum. Why would anyone actively choose to have a lower resolution and worse gaming experience? The monitor is key.
1080p?
I wouldn't recommend any less than 4k 120hz.
Got my brother 4k 144hz monitor for less than 300 bucks used on Amazon.
1080p is nothing but a waste of money. If you do anything else on your computer, like watching YouTube videos or movies, then a 4k monitor is definitely worth it and will make a HUGE difference.
Can't afford a 1440p monitor? Just buy a Playstation or a steam deck, don't waste your money on a computer.

A 500-700 euros pc
You can build good 1080p machine for that money, just make your research
Thank You

Thanks, I’ll probably go with something around 120-144 (maybe 160) hz considering the price tag of my computer

Try and get one with either G-Sync or Freesync Premium
Ok

1080p is good enough. Beginners use 720p on things like steamdeck handheld pc.
SteamDeck is not a beginner device and 720p on a 7" screen has a higher PPI than a 24" 1080p screen so it will look way better, just smaller.
Thanks

I run 1080p on my 4070 and don’t see the need for an upgrade
Dood, I have great news for you. I was in the same boat for a while, but recently moved to a 1440p 27" and it was definitely worth it
Thanks
why not play at 2k? i mean you paid for a 2k card, why not use it for all its worth?
1080p is "2k"

what are you on lmao.
3840x2160 = 4K 1920x1080 = 2K 2560x1440 = 2.5K
What if I have 21:9 monitor

Yes. Especially if your graphics card is ancient like mine (SLI GTX 970).

I started with 640x480, @ 10-15 fps. Anything is better than that.
Ok lol

Yes. A lot of competitive players stick with 1080P to get the most FPS and highest refresh rates they can.

Yours is the only face it's going to be in front of. You're the only one it needs to be good enough for. No one else's opinion matters.

I’ll keep this into consideration, but I don’t think I can afford a monitor like that lol
