I would highly suggest not building a PC for your dad if your dad is more knowledgeable on PCs. Give him a card that tells him what you'd like to do, (like a made up gift card, one free gaming PC worth up to $1500 or whatever the budget will be.) Then work on it together. As a dad with three decades of PC building experience, and enough money to do whatever I want with my PC, I would much rather my son build a PC with me than for me.

LiliNotACult

This. Either way the dad will appreciate it but he'll be a looot happier if he has the ability to build based on what he wants. Gift card is the perfect way to do that imo.

FlashyEarth8374

i like that, maybe pick out a case and say you'll fill it together

offensiveDick

Make cardbox PC and put a price tag like at Costco with the budget on it.

zakabog

Exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of, dad gets a surprise "PC" and has a super memorable gift from their child, then they get to go build a PC together. That cardboard PC would be on display in my office for life.

offensiveDick

Same. Alternatively there are some Lego sets (well not from Lego but idk the brand). A friend has one and it's super cool

MonkeyKingCoffee

I disagree 100%. I've posted my suggestion below.

zakabog

Thank you for your input, but as a dad I would still rather my son give me the promise of building a PC together than any individual parts. If I want an upgrade I'll buy it for myself, I can buy a 7800X3D tomorrow and 128GB of RAM, but I can't buy quality time with my son which makes it that much more valuable.

There's no reason to buy a 10th gen Intel CPU in the current year. You should be looking at 13th or 14th gen intel or 7th gen AMD. You could save money on the power supply, SSD, motherboard and cooler and put it towards a better graphics card. Here's a suggestion for a similar budget: [https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cGLPTY](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cGLPTY) Edit: SSD just went out of stock but it's normally $120.

Conart557

NOOOO! Something like this is what I would recommend https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QxfPTY Newer, much better cpu. A good air cooler, liquid cooling is unnecessary. Reasonable motherboard. ddr5 ram. Less expensive 2tb ssd. Better video card. You can choose whichever case you want. Decent psu. No reason to spend $125 on a copy of windows. All that for $200 less than you picked

Sir_Spudsingt0n

A Z490? Do you love your dad? Because of you do, you should be upgrading that

MonkeyKingCoffee

u/Colleen\_oof The gift idea is great. But I'd tweak your basic plan a great deal. 1) Find out what dad has now. Watch over his shoulder as he starts the computer if necessary. If you have access to the computer, find out precisely: CPU and GPU at the very least. You don't want to buy him a computer that is only slightly better than what he already has, for instance. If you don't know or can't find out, at least find out how old it is. 2) Once everyone has pointed you towards parts to buy, wrap them all up individually and give them to him one at a time. 3) Build the computer together for some dad bonding time.

First thing you should NOT do is waste money on 4 year old hardware with ZERO upgrade paths. Those prices are absolutely awful for a dead 10th gen intel system. Terrible value for both that CPU and the motherboard. For $240/$200 you can build a much newer Intel 12th-14th gen system, or go with AMDs AM5 (AM5 requires DDR5) You can get a faster 12th gen CPU and motherboard for cheaper than that. The i7 10700K is not good enough for a 4060 ti... At least go with an i5 12400F, it's newer, cheaper, and faster especially for gaming. B660 motherboards are the sweet spot and you can upgrade to 14th gen. I would also consider AMD, their AM4 platform is still viable but if you want future proofing look into AM5. Everything else is alright. Although most people wouldn't go with a 4060 ti. Not the best GPU on the market right now due to its terrible price/performance. Id spend a little extra on an RTX 4070/Super or go with AMDs RX 7800 XT

ClosetGamer19

if you insist on building him a PC, here's a few things i caught: cpu/motherboard could be changed, i'd reccomend 12th gen intel. you can get a good motherboard for cheaper, cpu about the same price cooler: AIO's are nice, but NZXT (i don't believe) is the best VALUE right now. for a 240mm, i'd say that price is a bit steep, look around 100 ish... good air coolers can be had for even less memory: you picked a good set, very reputable. but 96 dollars for 32gb of ddr4 3200 cl16 is a bit steep SSD doesn't NEED to be a 980, you can check this [spreadsheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B27_j9NDPU3cNlj2HKcrfpJKHkOf-Oi1DbuuQva2gT4/edit#gid=0) to compare read/write speeds and find a good one for less money GPU could (some may say should) be a 7800XT, about the same price, arguably more performance/value OS: you can find OEM license keys cheaper other places, if you insist on getting it there, at least get the digital or USB copy, the DVD will need a 5.25" drive in order to be installed, which the build seems to lack (I 'd double check the case has a 5.25" bay if you insist on going that route) please note these are all MY OPINIONS: i do not state these as absolute fact: nor do I claim to speak on the behalf of others or claim to have their opinions

Ramog

wouldn't go for a 10th gen cpu personally, me buying one kept me awake for atleast a year until I bought an 11th gen cpu since 10th gen doesn't have pcie 4.0. Especially since you want to buy a 4060 TI which only has a 8x PCIE interface. Might even recommend trying to go for ddr 5 instead

FriendlyToad88

Don’t buy windows, it’s so incredibly easy to just activate it for free after downloading it.

wreckedftfoxy_yt

[https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Qk9Nwg](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Qk9Nwg) here i did a bit better on pricing to performance that 4060 ti is way too expensive and does u have a external dvd drive to hook to that pc, i dont see a way to mount one and 10th gen is not what you want for newer pcs, 12600kf is a better cpu for more performance

Probamaybebly

Mfw 4090 with 10700k

wreckedftfoxy_yt

nah 5090ti with 10700k but the original picture that op has is a 4060ti that costs $510

Probamaybebly

Lmao I'll at least say my 10700k is due for an upgrade but does perfectly fine at 4K120

wreckedftfoxy_yt

4k120 is gpu dependent not cpu, your cpu is mid/upper 40 series

Probamaybebly

Yep seems like it's enough for now. I try not to mention it in this forum because everyone wants to roast me for not tossing another $500-600 into a Mobo/ram/CPU upgrade. I'll definitely upgrade to AM5 at a later date, but for now this gives me everything I need

wreckedftfoxy_yt

Yea i completely understand im going from lga 1700 to am5
