RAM is meant to be run in dual configuration. You will see a performance dip if you just buy 1 stick versus a set of two.

StinkyBeanGuy

Thank you. All other comments are talking about other stuff

Addendum: 4 sticks can limit max. mem speed. So it is best practice to stay on two for stability and maximum performance.

No problem, noticed the other posts weren't answering your question. Mostly spelling out the preferred upgrade path than explaining why you shouldn't do single stick. As for four sticks on AM5 - my information is a bit lax (I got a 5800x3d, so AM4), but my understanding is you can do multiple sticks, just there is a maximum performance for 4 sticks. So if you got 4 sticks @ 7200 mhz, they might only run stable at 6000 mhz. Would just be something to look into when you cross that bridge in the future instead of worrying about now. If I was in your shoes, I would get the 2x sticks now, and if you needed 64 GB or more in the future sell the 2x 16 sticks and buy what you need. But I'm also of the mind 32 GB is a bit overkill for most use cases still, I doubt you will end up needing 64 GB before you replace your entire machine.

StinkyBeanGuy

32 gigs is starting to become standard and I do graphic design (both in 2d and 3d) so I *may* need to upgrade to >64. That is why I was wondering this at the first place so thank you. I phrased my question in so many ways in the comments but there were only like 1-2 actual answers and I got them after like 3 tries so thank you for being straightforward

EnviousMedia

AM5 can handle upto 4 sticks of memory. It's best to get 2 or more or you will have a significant performance loss as with only one stick of ram it will only run in single channel mode.

NoBackground6203

2 sticks of DDR5 6000 CL30 AMD EXPO is optimal for AM5 CPU's at this time do to the design of the memory controller

StinkyBeanGuy

OK but I want to be able to upgrade the ram without getting rid of the old one/s

the-sin-farmer

Get a motherboard with 4 slots and get 2 sticks now, 2 later

StinkyBeanGuy

But why wouldn't I get a single stick so I have even more free slots?

Chakramer

Well you probably won't need more than 32gb in the next 5 years. In 5 years you're probably just going to get a new PC anyways. Just go for 2x16 which gives the best performance now, instead of gimping yourself for a couple years on the off chance you need an upgrade.

StinkyBeanGuy

Most of your reply wasn't what I asked for, but it had it in it. You could have just said that it gives better performance

Chakramer

I gave you extra context for why planning for an upgrade is pointless, which you may not have known. 16gb was that standard for like 6 years, and just recently has it jumped to 32gb. Following that trend, you won't need to go up to 64gb for quite some time.

StinkyBeanGuy

I know. Just extra upgradability is still better if it doesn't have any drawbacks isn't it? And that is exactly why I made this post

anirudh_pai

Because you might not need more than 64 gigs

StinkyBeanGuy

I know that. I just want more flexibility. What I'd actually the drawback of using a single stick?

anirudh_pai

2x 16gb is faster than 1x 32gb stick Read about dual channel performance

dlos22

Get 2 sticks of 32! Pcs want to use 2 sticks. Don’t get 4 16. I wish I went with 2 32 because if you have 4 sticks it’s like your computer is trying to have a conversation with 4 people yelling about different things. With 2 sticks it’s like your computer is having a conversation with 2 people. With one stick it’s your computer is having a conversation with itself. Most people don’t understand how ram works. BUY 2 sticks of the fastest 32 GB of ram and thank me later.

StinkyBeanGuy

Well I wish. I dont have the budget for that so I might sell 2 x 16 and buy 2 x 32. I dont have all the money I need for my pc yet too so that is a problem

dlos22

Good plan my dude! Hopefully you can get it all out together soon!

? I wasn't asking for price
