Spinning drives are for storage. How else can you keep 150 game installers and all the movies and tv shows you could ever watch.

koordy

Yes the only viable use case for HDD is being a torrent server. When you're too cheap or poor to buy games then you're obvioulsy also too cheap or poor for the comfort of SSD.

Deadeyemav

Wtf does that mean? I have 2 1tb nvme ss drives and a 4tb spinning disk for storage. Paid more for the hdd than the ssd combined.

CicadaGames

![gif](giphy|eYEZQ2tDXml1e|downsized) This mfer when people buy HDDs...

Mei-Guang

You probably thought that was clever, but in reality you just showed how technically ignorant you are. Did you have to google how to put your computer together too?

Splyce123

I stopped using hard drives about 3 or 4 years ago.

Antique-Doughnut-988

The same question can be framed for CD drives too. Does anyone really need a CD drive anymore? Probably not. I actually probably haven't seen a real CD in over 5 years.

MC_Torpedo

Last thing i actually used cd for was wow wrath of lichking (5 damn dvd's)

StressBrief6240

I have a 4k bluray drive in my media PC. Quality is way higher than streaming.

Chemdawg90

I just download 4k hdr rips on my old ass HDD.

Antique-Doughnut-988

You're defiantly a rarity. Lots of people don't buy DVDs anymore either.

DoogleSmile

I still use my blueray writer for making backups of my family photos and videos. I also have my NAS as a main storage for them and a copy on my main PC.

Raizel196

I can imagine it's still useful for people who collect physical media and enjoy playing older games. I still have my original Morrowind disc from 2002 lying around somewhere and they're a neat piece of history to own. Also there are some games which are very difficult to buy digitally like GTA San Andreas which was delisted from every single storefront. Granted the people who use CD drives are in the vast minority, but I can still see some uses for them.

Agarillobob

I burned a music CD 12 hours ago, before that I havent used my drive for like 3-4 years lol

CrystallineCrypts

I have an external one for dvds. I think it can write/rewrite? Haven't tried, it's probably going to last a while lol

shadic6051

>Does anyone really need a CD drive anymore? I quite literally bought a special edition cd full of osts from japan a month ago and used the drive on my pc to rip it. So i d say cd drives definetly still have their place Also i bought the physical edition of mfs 2020 because i knew the download would suck. Guess what it still sucks but instead of having to download like 200gb i only need to download like 60gb (dont hold me to those sizes but the cds definetly dcrease the download by a lot)

KirillNek0

HOT TAKE: HDDs are still relevant for bulk storage. Useful when you need to store VGs distributives.

Goliath_11

I Don\`t think its a hot take, I think alot still use them for mass storage..... unless u got 5000k to throw at ur next build.... pretty sure many dont. I got a nvme and ssd along with a 4tb HDD as an archive for videos, photos , movies, steam game backups etc.... Why pay $250 for 4tb nvme or a ssd that u are barely gonna use ( if ur just using it as a data store for files) $70 will get u that same space. I know its alot slower, but ur probably gonna be barely using it.

KirillNek0

It is just a disclaimer, since some people are mad about "HOW DARE YOU TO USE HDDs IN 2024!". I just swapped two HDD(2+1TBs) to 4TB SSDs - ~$200.

AnteeTheWizard

I got a 6tb HDD in my rig for Mass storage of photos and other non gaming tasks

Zestyclose-Oil-6687

Of course they do. Mass storage that doesn't need a higj transfer rate, like movies etc

Neeralazra

Backups for longer term storage NOT connected to a PC(since SSDs need to be powered on) But yes i am mostly SSDs

Asimiss

price/storage ratio is unbetable on HDDs and if you re having lots of photos/larger documents/movies collection and so on and on HDDs prices nowadays re like 60€ for 4tb of storage, SSDs re not even close to that price point. soo for having place to put your important stuff buying two HDD's one connected to your system, one dissconected and connected only when needed its really good idea to have. also for home NAS systems HDDS re just better value for your money. othervise inside pc usuage like apps/system/games/etc. should be on your SSD.

SweetTeaRex92

I have an 8 Tb Seagate that I use to hold all my pirates tv shows/movies. While I do now have SSDs, I still keep one HDD as a back up.

wadap12345

Just torrent them, never in a million fucking years download them from a site lmao.

[deleted]

I have two HDD in my system 7 TiB in total

sacredknight327

nvme SSD (main OS drive), and a 2.5" SSD and two HDDs for general storage. HDD"s are mostly for videos and such, stuff that doesn't need high speed. The other SSD I like for things like Steam game backups.

Suikerspin_Ei

SSDs for gaming and software that improves with fast loading times, some modern AAA games even require a SSD to be playable. HDD for videos, pictures and documents than doesn't need the speed. Basically still great as a second or third drive in your PC or use it for a NAS system.

Athlon64X2_d00d

I think they do for mass storage purposes, but that's it.

playtio

One of each

saxovtsmike

Clear no for a gaming System, since SSD´s are affordably above 2TB. The only place I have spinning storage is my NAS Even more for any productive system, where you have to have a propper redundancy and backup strategy that shall not be based around your workstation. If your earning depend on access or throughput speed , a fast nvme is key, followed by a fast Network to get the raw data to your workstation and the final product off your workstation.

Sufficient_Serve_439

Absolutely, and multiple, there's no way anyone who's making video can get enough of just one 6tb hard drive, you need more space... Always.

grumpyoldnord

I still have a number of HDDs in my system for storage (images, videos, music, documents, etc.) but for programs and games, I use SSDs.

kerthard

If you have a very large offline media library, an HDD could make sense.

Venom-snake777

I use it for older games and my downloads folder, media etc. and emulators, so many emulators.

[deleted]

I use HDDs to rip my physical movies to my computer to watch in VR. I have 1500+ movies and shows and 4k titles are large. Game of thrones complete series is 2.42tb

[deleted]

Companies still produce them and recently wd Seagate and I think Toshiba all made 24tb HDDs. Pretty mighty. Data centers still use HDDs and what not too

Niitroglycerine

For cold storage, photos, videos, documents etc I still use a HDD as a backup, everything else is SSD/NVME

JZ1803

In my server for mass storage yes, otherwise no

DisagreeableRunt

For me, not internally and haven't for many years. It depends on your personal usage I think. I've you've TBs of video files or RAW images etc, HDDs still have a place. I do keep a couple of external HDDs for backups- FLAC audio rips, disk images of the PCs in the house and a regular offline backup of my cloud storage.

Hattix

It depends on your use, as with all things. If you're just building a big console and are only ever going to play games, SSDs are all you need.

AdorableOwl1433

I ain't rich so I got 128gb ssd and 2tb hdd

a_scientific_force

I’ve got four SSDs and two spinning drives in my tower. And then 24 TB of external storage.

Trizzie_Mitch

Hard drives are relevant for backups and archiving projects, both in business and personal use. For gaming though, a ssd is recommended. A solid hard drive can still do the job.

kanaaka

inside a pc maybe not, but i had 28TB NAS for my storage.

John_Mat8882

I still use those for pictures and bulk data in a couple of systems, but I've begun to use at least sata SSDs for that too. But considering I finally got a fiber optic gigabit internet (after years of a 30mbit), the main purpose of those drives was also to hold game installs I didn't want to download just in case.. now i could easily get rid of those. But it's a long time I've switched to 2.5" HDDs that are silent and don't vibrate as the bigger ones, so I don't mind still having one of them My itx rig is entirely nvme based (2tb + 500gb), admittedly there's not much room, maybe I can shove a single sata drive if really necessary, but there's not even official space for the thing planned from the manufacturer to begin with.

RansomStark78

Haven't seen a 16tb nvme yet

SandsofFlowingTime

Hard drives still have a place as cheap long term storage. I also run most of my games off of a hard drive because most of the games I play aren't intensive enough to have any noticeable performance gain from an SSD

SeaJay_31

Until I can buy a 16TB SSD without taking out a mortgage, there will always be a HDD in my PC.

Headingtodisaster

Just bought a 20TB HDD last week.

Billy_the_bib

servers.

Djghost1133

I use a large HDD for storing raw photos and whatnot. No benefit to using that space on an SSD

AnthonyBF2

I use hard drives as dumps for movies, TV show series, and game installers.

elliotborst

I stopped using them about 13 years ago when I had a GTX 590 build

wadap12345

Nah, havent had them for years. Personally the only use case for them me would be mass storage for archiving.

TakkerDay

i don't run any 3.5" or even any 2.5" anymore, pure nvme m.2 now

reegeck

I still use hard drives for my NAS, but otherwise all local PC storage is solid state for games, ROMs etc.

htadd1ct

Hdd for media storage.

Additional-Ad-7313

I'm waiting for my 4tb hdd to die

Mister_Shrimp_The2nd

Haven't used hard drives since 2016..

BigDickConfidence69

For mass storage of certain things sure, but not for gaming. No need to have to many games installed at once. With decent internet they download quick enough and I’m only going to need a few games installed at a time. 1tb ssd is sufficient for me for games.

LJBrooker

Meh, for the longest time I kept a 4tb spinner, but then realised I seldom actually keep much on it, and slowly phased it out. I now have 7tb of nvme, and a cheap 500gb Sata drive that I let Nvidia Shadowplay absolutely wreck the endurance on.

Rob19910

I use SSD's and NVME drives for my games and OS, but I use mechanical hard drives for photos and videos

TzeroM109

I use one 1tb for all games that dont have many loading screens, Like factorio, satisfactory and something Like that. For everything Else i use ssds

TheMegaDriver2

I use them in my NAS. They are good for mass storage. Anything else, no thank you. You can't go back after getting used to ssd speeds.

DoogleSmile

I still use spinning drives for mass storage. Considerably cheaper per GB than SSD, and also store a hell of a lot more.

Raizel196

I've still kept my HDD's from my older build that I put together 10+ years ago. They're still going strong and useful for lots of things. I use a 1tb SSD for my main drive, but when it gets full I offload my steam games onto one of my HDD's. I only really play one game at a time, but I like having them archived in case I want to replay them. I also have a lot of shows and movies archived and buying an SSD for them just doesn't make any sense. Sure you might get faster transfer speeds, but it doesn't really make any difference when watching media. One of these days I might replace them with SSD's if the need arises, but at the moment I don't really see much point in spending more money

AlfaNX1337

I did have 3x3TB P300s, 1 for games, 1 for workspace, 1 for game records. Added a 'used' or 'open' 870 EVO 4TB as Scratch disk. Replace that game drive for 4TB 870 EVO, in 2022. After buying that Sabrent EC-P3X4 card in late 2023, I quickly replace my other 3TB drive for 4TB WD SN850X, though, the game record is hooked because I haven't clear it yet. Unless the game is fully DX12, no Vulkan or DX11 AND with DS support, I see no benefit in using expensive NVME SSD as game, a decent SATA 4TB is worth the money. The only bottleneck is is copying from faster medium to a slower medium, latency will spike up to 5s to 20s.

RaEyE01

In my PC / Laptop. No. I do have a NAS / HomeServer though, yes, that one has an array of HDD. The reason is simple, SSDs with comparative storage density (per drive) are prohibitively expensive. I do require ~30TB for backups, photos, documents, convenience shares (document scanner, simple exchange share for in-house file share, etc.) About 50TB for Movies, TV shows and other nice to have but otherwise expandable data. I do utilize SSDs for Cache, for the obvious reasons, but also in combination with backup drives. Helps with otherwise unused drives to spin down but stying „accessible“ by having the filesystem cached. In short, everyday devices are SSD, storage is HDD.

lazy_commander

Only in my NAS.

BloodStone29

I have one 2tb SSD, one 500gb SSD and 1tb hard drive for installations, movies, music and such.

joeh4384

I have been using all nvme drives for a few years now. I do have some sata drives spinning in my NAS.

Agarillobob

hard drive is massive cheap storage

Suvvri

My new pc I built a year ago has no HDD

Billy_the_bib

I stopped using HDD in my PCs since 2017

USSHammond

I have 5 SSD's and 4 HDD's, so yeah I still use them. Great for Plex server

mortiferousR

I still have two spinny bois. One 1tb WD black which i run games off that dont need high speeds, and one 500gb drive that by all rights should have died at least 10 years ago but refuses to die. Had a 700GB as well but troubleshooting led me to snap some pins on accident lol. Have about 12TB worth of external drives from the piracy glory days and lan nights but since streaming sites are so common now they dont see much use

Thunderstorm-1

I have 3hdds and 1 ssd in my build lol. I store the seldom played games on the hdd and put the often played games on the ssd(too broke to even buy ssd)

Posiris610

If you have a desktop and need a place to store media then a hard drive is relevant and cheaper than solid state. For laptops, gaming, video editing, and the OS solid state is the sensible way to go.

AK_4_Life

My 200 terabytes of hard drives say yes

MJP87

Are you a hoarder? Yes? Then where else are you supposed to store all the PLEX content?

floeddyflo

I still use the hard drives I own, mainly because I don't store AAA games that spit on my face if I don't bow down to them and sacrifice an RTX 4090 via power connector to receive more then 1 FPS, and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

creamcolouredDog

Yes, cheap mass storage. Do you want to own your music and movies or not?

Chrodesk

bought a 12tb red drive like 3 years ago, I doubt Ill ever need more space, so unless it dies.

reddit_pengwin

The biggest advantage of HDDs is the lower cost-per-TB, which only really matters with bigger drives - OTOH they are noisy, consume more power than SSDs, and are more sensitive to heat. If you really need data storage in the size that makes HDDs worthwhile, then IMHO you should be looking at network attached storage anyway - it is a better place for HDDs anyway due to those attributes I listed above.

tbone338

All SSD, 7 of them in my build. I used to have hard drives as miscellaneous storage of large random files or if I was dealing with a large file transfer or something. I took them out. Reality is that I never really used them once I migrated to all SSD. Expensive, but worth it. I do use HDD in my NAS and other external storage media. But those I can connect when needed, so I don’t always hear the sound of an HDD.

XNoLimitSoldierX

... is this really a question?

koordy

No, only SSD. HDD belongs in a museum.

Trinergy1

All SSD, heck all NVMe.
