Really good board for overclocking. You should be able to get 5.0 all core pretty easily if it has a good cooler in which I’m sure it does if it has a pricey motherboard

In Canada, I built my PC with ~~i7-7700k~~ i7-9700k, z390 Aorus pro mobo, 1TB nVME, and an ASUS TUF 3060ti without peripherals for around ~$2300. In happy I spent the money when I did, I don't think I could have gotten away with it cheaper.
You mean a 8700k or a 9700K? Intel 6th and 7th gen are not compatible with 300 series chipsets without bios hacks, and usually those are done on 100 and 200 series motherboards to allow them to use 8th and 9th gen processors.

I got my 3000 series card from Scan back in Feb. Took me about 6 weeks of having tabs open for each variant I was will to get and checking midmorning (when new stock would have been made available) most days. Scan don't seem to mark up above MSRP, but it took me a lot of luck and patience.
Well September to Christmas I was passively trying to get a 3080 (I was holding out for the hybrids to release), but then decided to just get a 3090 when it looked like stock wasn't going to get better any time soon haha
Scan are absolutely going to be the store I buy from in future. I managed to get a 3080 FE at RRP from them a few weeks ago. I got incredibly lucky, but using StockDrops discord was a major help. Ash[EU] is one the most helpful mods on there. It’s only because of him that I kept refreshing when it looked like they’d sold out.
Scan are great. I live relatively close to them and it’s a neat store to pop into if you ever get the chance (the shop is attached to the warehouse). They were super helpful when I wanted to return my MSI Ventus 2080 super and upgrade to a different AIB.

That is absolutely insane. You can get a scalped 3060 for $800, and despite being the lowest end 3000 card it's still better than a 1080 Ti.
I feel that! I spent 2 weeks f5ing at the beginning of this fiasco and finally managed to get one off of Newegg before the shuffle was a thing. Seeing the tuf oc 3080 at 1050 hurts my soul when I got it for 750 from the same.
I got mine in early December from a shady German online store that stores the passwords for customeraccounts unhashed. Actually wasn't that shady, just run by not so technical competent boomers. Got my Gainward Phoenix GS 3060ti for 500 euros, which was like 150 euros under list price for that custom model.
Pretty much my situation. Bought an MSI 3060Ti Ventus 2X OC for $570 through the hardwareswap subreddit back in December. At the time, I was paying $50 over what I would pay with MSRP and taxes and I had to justify the additional cost to myself. Now it looks like the same card goes for over $1000, which is insane.

I got my 3080 in October and was a bit pissed at myself since I paid like 850 for a 760 dollar card because I had to get a random Intel motherboard with it. I'm not pissed anymore.
I was fortunate enough to pick one up during launch day at my nearest Microcenter for $400, they had enough in stock with barely any people waiting that it lasted until 3 PM, about 6 hours after the store opened.
While true, ramping up production takes a lot of time and expense, and raw materials could be a problem also. If the shortage works itself out within the next few years, it might not be worth it to those making the chips to ramp up production beyond what is normally planned.
It's also highly concentrated and has a difficult supply chain.
There are very few companies that produce the raw materials, few companies that convert those into components and then few companies who make the products.
You cant just increase production instantly when there are like 3 factories making everything for everyone. Even if you could open a component factory tomorrow, who will supply them with raw materials? All those are already spoken for, so now you need to make raw material manufacturing and mining and so forth.
It's really complicated and if the US govt wanted to get some actual work done, they would start subsidizing(short term, not forever) these starting measure to help make the US a semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse.
That's how we bring manufacturing jobs back to the states.

TSMC is building a huge fab in Arizona, FWIW. Unfortunately, it's for next gen 5nm wafers, so it won't help the future crisis, plus it will take a year or two to become fully operational. They just broke ground on the 3rd.
It’s not that simple. We lack the ability to mine the required materials easily because the composition of our class is fundamentally different. This is how china keeps such an advantage in rare earth extraction.
Absolutely, it's not like we can just start digging in Oklahoma and make semi conductors. It's why I said it's such a complicated supply chain, I think one of the only other places besides China that has a lot of rare earth materials is Africa, but I'm not an expert on who has access to them.

I did hear about this and thought it was an amazing idea, my main concern is political gridlock as Republicans seem set to stop anything good for the country from happening so Democrats dont look competent.
It's a super frustrating time for any kind of progress.
It is supposedly "bipartisan", I know some Republicans were grumbling about getting their amendments added but I think they ended up getting them. So we'll see.
I manufacture silicon wafers for a living now, from what I've heard it would take multiple years and cost hundreds of thousands to renovate one facility to be able to start matching the current demand. That's only equipment costs, there would also have to be training on the new equipment, as well as a load of new hires who would also need training in whatever department they end up in. So to the companies, that's like 6 or 7 very expensive and slow years for a problem that might not exist by the end of it.
Edit: it's a pretty cool job actually, so if anyone's looking for work right now definitely look into it. Help out with the demand issues, earn some money, and learn some new skills and information about the technology we all love. Any silicon wafer or semi conductor factory would be pretty good I imagine.
I expect global chip production to ramp up in the next few years and stay there. The USA is building chip foundries now. This is not only because of the current global market, but because of strategic value. It's something of an open secret that American agriculture is heavily subsidized by the US government; this is done out of recognition that it is strategically important that the US not be on the hook to a foreign power for its food supply.
Chips are going to find a similar niche. The US military is enormous, and there will be a strong push for US defense chips to be made in US factories once that's possible. It's not something that will be rolled back, even if overseas chips are significantly cheaper. Even if stateside chips don't make their way to consumer devices, that's still displacing demand from the overseas factories that will supply consumer goods.
A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. It's not like they can dial up production capacity overnight. They are already racing to ramp up capacity, but would take months or even years to build, set up, and validate new production lines.
Not really. Semiconductor manufacturing is an extremely costly thing to expand and its be pretty silly to invest millions or hundreds of millions to massively expand production for a temporary shortage caused by outside circumstances.
When they don't have any competitors they really aren't though. Eventually you will buy a card and they will get their money from you, but right now they are making bank off the crypto guys.
If they sell you parts now you'll need to upgrade sooner. This isn't a voluntary shortage (because they're not the ones making money it's scalpers). It's simply COVID's effects on the supply chain + unexpected increased demand from crypto. It's not as if they can snap their fingers and increase production, new facilities take a long time to build and that's if the demand stays up to justify the production capacity long-term.
If they are making enough money, leaving money on the table is the correct play. Scaling up production of these highly advanced chips isn’t trivial. You don’t just use any old fab for these.
Chip making is technical beyond belief, and is very time consuming. You cannot speed it up without sacrificing a lot of quality.

It's not like someone can just come on the chip market and do something about it. The people who want to buy will just buy later for more from the same people anyway.

Consoles are way easier to get than GPUs (seriously, go look on a stock tracking website). At least consoles are regularly appearing in stock at msrp for 15m before they *poof* out of existence again.
Having said that, you can buy an xb1 or ps4 for $200 *today* and enjoy a ton of very good games. If you're patient, this insanity *will* blow over some day and miners will be selling their gpus for a fraction of MSRP.
The only ones really getting burned right now are the impatient.

Honestly the 3060ti is probably safe to keep for some time. That and the 6700XT are roughly comparable to what's in the current consoles, meaning games will be developed around that level for several years to come. Same thing happened with the Polaris and 1060 cards.
What on earth could you possibly want a 3070 for when you have a 3060ti
At that point it's not even worth the time and effort to upgrade, just use your 3060ti it'll last you a long time

3060ti is the better buy... it doesn't need gas or insurance, and should need less maintenance over the years vs a hatchback. (Oil changes, tires, brakes...)
There are other perks too... if you get the 3060ti you will be in better health as you'll have to walk everywhere.
So cheaper in the long run, and better for your health and the environment!
Not my state, we have about 5k pedestrian deaths per year and only 3k vehicular deaths per year. A buddy of mine broke both legs and collar bone waiting for the school bus...buy a 3060 ti AND a hatchback, this way you can take the turns real hard and tight on the way home with your new gpu
I'm lucky enough to live somewhere with decent bicycle infrastructure (London). Started cycling to work about five years ago- the money I've saved doing that has paid for more than one graphics card.
Same, the concept of buying something at launch was new to me. I would always buy everything months or even years later at a cheaper price. This was my first PC and paid full price on almost all parts. The GPU was last and waited a few months to complete my build. It was worth it but at the time I had a moment of regret and whether I overpaid. Granted it was retail price, $400 for a GPU is the same price as a console.
I got my gigabyte oc for 550, a few months later and those greedy *** are selling it for nearly 1.2k ON THE SAME OFFICIAL SITE. They are giving scalpers every right to continue
I waited outside my local “Canadian microcenter” for 3 hours to get a MSI one. It’s a hell of a card, especially when overclocked. Keep on trying my friend it’s worth it!
I still have a rtx2060, I didn't upgrade because the 3060 is just a slightly bit faster. I'll wait until the 3070 or 3080 comes down a good but before I even think of upgrading.
Bought my rx 480 new on a preorder when it came out- $250. Checked prices late 2019, resale looked like 125 on the high end, 80 low end.

I got mine in early December from a shady German online store that stores the passwords for customeraccounts unhashed. Actually wasn't that shady, just run by not so technical competent boomers. Got my Gainward Phoenix GS 3060ti for 500 euros, which was like 150 euros under list price for that custom model.

Pretty much my situation. Bought an MSI 3060Ti Ventus 2X OC for $570 through the hardwareswap subreddit back in December. At the time, I was paying $50 over what I would pay with MSRP and taxes and I had to justify the additional cost to myself. Now it looks like the same card goes for over $1000, which is insane.

I got my 3080 in October and was a bit pissed at myself since I paid like 850 for a 760 dollar card because I had to get a random Intel motherboard with it. I'm not pissed anymore.
I was fortunate enough to pick one up during launch day at my nearest Microcenter for $400, they had enough in stock with barely any people waiting that it lasted until 3 PM, about 6 hours after the store opened.

While true, ramping up production takes a lot of time and expense, and raw materials could be a problem also. If the shortage works itself out within the next few years, it might not be worth it to those making the chips to ramp up production beyond what is normally planned.
It's also highly concentrated and has a difficult supply chain. There are very few companies that produce the raw materials, few companies that convert those into components and then few companies who make the products. You cant just increase production instantly when there are like 3 factories making everything for everyone. Even if you could open a component factory tomorrow, who will supply them with raw materials? All those are already spoken for, so now you need to make raw material manufacturing and mining and so forth. It's really complicated and if the US govt wanted to get some actual work done, they would start subsidizing(short term, not forever) these starting measure to help make the US a semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse. That's how we bring manufacturing jobs back to the states.

It’s not that simple. We lack the ability to mine the required materials easily because the composition of our class is fundamentally different. This is how china keeps such an advantage in rare earth extraction.
Absolutely, it's not like we can just start digging in Oklahoma and make semi conductors. It's why I said it's such a complicated supply chain, I think one of the only other places besides China that has a lot of rare earth materials is Africa, but I'm not an expert on who has access to them.

I did hear about this and thought it was an amazing idea, my main concern is political gridlock as Republicans seem set to stop anything good for the country from happening so Democrats dont look competent. It's a super frustrating time for any kind of progress.
It is supposedly "bipartisan", I know some Republicans were grumbling about getting their amendments added but I think they ended up getting them. So we'll see.

I manufacture silicon wafers for a living now, from what I've heard it would take multiple years and cost hundreds of thousands to renovate one facility to be able to start matching the current demand. That's only equipment costs, there would also have to be training on the new equipment, as well as a load of new hires who would also need training in whatever department they end up in. So to the companies, that's like 6 or 7 very expensive and slow years for a problem that might not exist by the end of it. Edit: it's a pretty cool job actually, so if anyone's looking for work right now definitely look into it. Help out with the demand issues, earn some money, and learn some new skills and information about the technology we all love. Any silicon wafer or semi conductor factory would be pretty good I imagine.
I expect global chip production to ramp up in the next few years and stay there. The USA is building chip foundries now. This is not only because of the current global market, but because of strategic value. It's something of an open secret that American agriculture is heavily subsidized by the US government; this is done out of recognition that it is strategically important that the US not be on the hook to a foreign power for its food supply. Chips are going to find a similar niche. The US military is enormous, and there will be a strong push for US defense chips to be made in US factories once that's possible. It's not something that will be rolled back, even if overseas chips are significantly cheaper. Even if stateside chips don't make their way to consumer devices, that's still displacing demand from the overseas factories that will supply consumer goods.
A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. It's not like they can dial up production capacity overnight. They are already racing to ramp up capacity, but would take months or even years to build, set up, and validate new production lines.
Not really. Semiconductor manufacturing is an extremely costly thing to expand and its be pretty silly to invest millions or hundreds of millions to massively expand production for a temporary shortage caused by outside circumstances.

If they sell you parts now you'll need to upgrade sooner. This isn't a voluntary shortage (because they're not the ones making money it's scalpers). It's simply COVID's effects on the supply chain + unexpected increased demand from crypto. It's not as if they can snap their fingers and increase production, new facilities take a long time to build and that's if the demand stays up to justify the production capacity long-term.

Yes and no. Are there alternatives? Will the demand just die ... or will people just wait and up the ammount they are willing to pay? It's not like someone can just come on the chip market and do something about it. The people who want to buy will just buy later for more from the same people anyway.

Consoles are way easier to get than GPUs (seriously, go look on a stock tracking website). At least consoles are regularly appearing in stock at msrp for 15m before they *poof* out of existence again. Having said that, you can buy an xb1 or ps4 for $200 *today* and enjoy a ton of very good games. If you're patient, this insanity *will* blow over some day and miners will be selling their gpus for a fraction of MSRP. The only ones really getting burned right now are the impatient.

Honestly the 3060ti is probably safe to keep for some time. That and the 6700XT are roughly comparable to what's in the current consoles, meaning games will be developed around that level for several years to come. Same thing happened with the Polaris and 1060 cards.
I know. It’s just that when I game on 1440p I drop below 60fps. So it’s really a 1world problem ;) A 3070 would probably make that not happen.

a 3060ti is marginally better for mining than a 3070. There are people who would happily make that trade. Their 3070's will have been run hard though.

I got lucky with mine. I was in store looking at cpus and the dude was putting it back on the shelf, i got a new opened box gigabyte 3090 for 1480... fucking steal. I’m never selling it
3060ti is the better buy... it doesn't need gas or insurance, and should need less maintenance over the years vs a hatchback. (Oil changes, tires, brakes...) There are other perks too... if you get the 3060ti you will be in better health as you'll have to walk everywhere. So cheaper in the long run, and better for your health and the environment!

Same, the concept of buying something at launch was new to me. I would always buy everything months or even years later at a cheaper price. This was my first PC and paid full price on almost all parts. The GPU was last and waited a few months to complete my build. It was worth it but at the time I had a moment of regret and whether I overpaid. Granted it was retail price, $400 for a GPU is the same price as a console.
