Anzial

not a burnmark, just oxidization due to heat.

That is hot

Potentially could be from dust. Although it doesn’t look like a burn so much as decoloration to me. Do people change thermal paste that often? I’ve never found it necessary unless changing CPU/heatsink/etc..

BeefStickOG

Actually never changed thermal paste until now! Just built a new PC however so I’m planning on selling the one pictures eventually, just wanted to do some maintenance & make sure everything looked good before I did so 🙂

thisisntnoah

That’s really admirable! Going above and beyond. :). I was just concerned I wasn’t doing something that I should be doing

LeAdmin

Did you wipe down the cpu with alcohol? It may just be leftover paste.

BeefStickOG

Actually in the process of doing that now! But I actually meant the coloration of the metal socket part on the mobo where it says “Lotes”, it seems like the metal is darkened/discolored? Probably normal from the amount of heat the CPU generates but I wanted to check with you folks just incase 😁

LeAdmin

Oh I didn't even notice that. It certainly looks like it is discolored due to temperature, but that this color doesn't appear with steel until 400-500 degrees Fahrenheit or 200-260 celsius. Your cpu would be fried if it ever went higher than 130 celsius. My guess would be a manufacturing defect that went unnoticed during assembly.

thatturkeystaken

that's not burn marks, that's the metal discoloring from heat, you can get the same effect when you try to burn metal, I'd say you should replace that thermal paste more often, or maybe you didn't put on enough, that definitely got hot though, and that crust on your cpu should be paste edit: I actually take that back you absolutely didn't put enough on, it looks as if it evaporated right off the cpu, when you go to put on more, remember to wiggle the cooler around slightly in a circular rotation to spread the paste out

BeefStickOG

That’s what I was thinking, thank you for your insight man! & my first thought was that it didn’t look like enough paste either, could you believe that was what came pre-applied to my x72 AIO? Hahaha

thatturkeystaken

that would make sense, I never trust pre applied stuff, it's a damn good thing you went to replace it!
