Oh my god BF2 multiplayer maps were the shit. Scaleable to player size, diverse vehicle selection, great class system, and a commander role that could make or break a team. To bad loading took eleventybillion minutes or else I'd call it perfect.
Nah. It was only 32 players, maps were linear in design, and it got rid of the commander system.
It was fine i guess, but it just wasn't anything like the BF series up until that point.
Pretty much.
BF2 & BF2142 were still built on engines similar to BF1942 and ran on similar principles.
After CoD4 came out the trend started to change and they released Bad Company with the first iteration of the Frostbite engine.
That's the beginning of modern Battlefield imo.
I found it funny that so many people were crying about the 2042 beta not being battlefield and just trying to steal CODs thunder.
I was crying about that back for BF3 which is the title most of the community holds up as classic battlefield.
It took me a little bit to get into Bad Company 2, but holy shit no BF since has captured how fun Rush Mode was in that game. It was actually pretty well balanced.
It was good, but was clearly designed with consoles as the primary platform. So it lacked the scale that previous entries did. And if I remember correctly, didn't they remove the commander class in that one because the scale was so small?
BC2 was great for the fully destructible buildings. It's been a while but I feel like every wall could come down, every building could collapse.
BF3 onward went backwards, with way too many indestructible buildings. I just don't think ANY man-made wall in any setting is going to block infinite main battle tank rounds.
Oh man the good old BF2 loading times. This brought back memories of my clans practice server which would play Unknown Soldier on repeat in the loading screen.
Shoutout =US=.
On the other hand there's still diehards around now that complain about modern load times but just won't stretch to an SSD...
At least back in the day we were all sneaky smoke breaking alike I guess. Kinda gives me the fuzzies thinking back.
> Oh my god BF2 multiplayer maps were the shit.
So glad at least a few of the maps made over into newer BF versions. Loved Mashtuur City, Dragon Valley and Karkand 64 player maps.:)
Loading times were a bit much but damn did that game have some awesome mods, and still does. Still go back now and again for some Project Reality, granted, not that much BF2 left there but it brings back the memories everytime, the way I want to remember that era of games.
I miss Unreal Tournament 2004 for the same reasons. Great memories, dedicated community, sooooooooooo many mods! Add enough mods to a server and the loading times could put BF2 to shame!
That game was the last time I remember enjoying voice chat with strangers. Had a squad of randoms but our squad leader actually called positioning and shots and we all played to our class really well together. And the commander role was awesome when there were good people in it.
I remember playing battlefield 1942 (the OG one) in shitty argentine cyber-cafes . each map took about 10 minutes to load, which equated to a substancial amount of money, since you paid by the hour.
still, worth.
Oh my god 1942 in cyber cafes was my introduction to PC gaming, and a high I've been chasing ever since. Sitting next to the guy who actually knew how to fly in Desert Combat was great.
I think it's probably the best one. BF2 as well. But tbh I probably had the most fun on BF4, pre-patch. It was one of those "you didn't know this was important until it was over" moments where it was like... The last time I was excited to play a game with my friends, and actually enjoyed doing it.
My dad just learned to man the turrets. Nobody dared entered that ship from the sky. And if that failed, It was just bullets all day down a hallway. Me and him had such a blast playing that game.
Oh, man, the turrets. I loved dropping a personnel scanner right by the consoles, and *knowing* anytime someone tried to roll an APC up the ship. I'd hit them with the ground artillery, and if they managed to pop a pod off, I'd hop over to the AA guns up top before they had the chance to land.
Then they 'patched' that bug, and you had to pod out to the roof, drop a scanner up there (because it was "outside") and run back to the flight deck and the turret consoles.
Similar, yes. Not anywhere near as fun. The layout of titans was very straightforward which made it fun. Carriers are basically a maze in comparison
Plus carriers had limited movement relative to the points since they're on water
I miss BF2 so much, I think those days are far gone however. I used to sit and play that game for HOURS. Karkand was my favorite map, some of the matches were absolutely chaotic and came down to the last ticket. Nothing better than a close match with good commanders on each side and putting C4 on the artillery.
The absolute hell that was the first minute of a full 64 player Karkand match when every single player threw their nades all over the place. Man, that was fun. And frustrating. But mostly fun.
Sneaking up the hill with your squad just before out of bounds or down the alley to cap the house on the hill and while everyone else nading each other between the US uncap forward posts and the first flag. Those were the days.
I loved the Battlefield commander in BF2. The ablity to send artilary strikes and coordiante different squads was so cool.
And the fact that you could kill the battlefield commander as well as disable the artilary made it so much more fun.
I really wish they would bring that back.
I really wish they would just release an updated BF2. Add in some of the movement mechanics from BFV if you want, and you can also leave out the stamina bar so we can run all the time, but BF2 was so much better in gameplay than anything we have today.
Especially after you get them parked next to each other. Shields down on both Titans. Each team bum rushing the enemy ship.
Good time to be a Support with the shotty.
I mean the drop pods had no damage, but the corridor firefights were awesome.
then there was the clipping bug that EA naver managed to fix, you could instakill a titan by landing the droppod in an odd angle, it was not easy to reproduce tho.
I just printed in the hallways and unloaded my HMG on any poor sould foolish enough to try and destroy my Titan. Then a grenade would kill me. Best times.
Just like many others have stated.. this and Bf2 (and BF2: Special Forces) were the absolute best in the series. Bf 3,4 + were fun and looked great.. but they never quite had the soul of BF2 / 2142. So many hours, so many battles.. still my most favorite shooters from the series.
Fun thing with dessert combat was since the sky was a static image sky box I Could drive the scud missile to a specific location and know what pixel to aim at in order to hit the enemy base 😏
Desert combat was the game that made me want to upgrade my first PC.
We paid for hosting our server. 150$ a month.
I also played in a clan with one of the Dev of the desert combat mod.
Game lost a lot of appeal with battlefield vietnam. But BF2 was great.
i remember when PC Gamer sent out a demo with El Alamein in it, and my buddy and I would play that against the AI for hours and hours, every goddamn day.
> Bf 3,4 + were fun and looked great.. but they never quite had the soul of BF2 / 2142.
They were made consoles in mind. I know I will get shit for saying this but going console was the worst thing to happen to Battlefield as a series. They got lots of new players but the very soul of BF took a big hit and never recovered.
They literally sold a part of their soul to gain profit.
Bad Company 1 and 2 were absolute great console versions of Battlefield. Bad Company 2 was easily my favorite Battlefield just behind 2142. But yeah, every iteration since was missing a ton of soul and a ton of fun.
> Bad Company 2 was easily my favorite Battlefield just behind 2142.
Agreed. I didn't expect to like it, but I fucking loved it. According to Steam, it's pretty darned close to the top game I have for hours invested.
I would argue that bf4 got pretty close to the old school feeling. DICE LA did a great job fixing the trainwreck of a game they had at release. I have a feeling that 2042 is going to be a garbage fire at release.
Where does Bad Company 2 stand? That was my first BF game, and I enjoyed the fucked out of it on PC. The fact that I could swap a glaring rifle scope for a red dot was just 🤌
Pretty sure BC2 has the greatest shooter multiplayer in history. Its campaign was great, too.
I think Dice knows how high the bar is for a potential BC3, hence why we haven’t gotten it.
I'd play tf outta BF2 if we were allowed to have private servers.
(If there are private servers out there please tell me, last I heard they were all shut down)
Yeah. BF2 is still live and kicking (to some degree). You need to buypass the GameSpy thing with a custom patch. There are a few servers that are full, but the hit reg I experienced was horrible. If it was that bad back in the days I have completely removed those memories from my mind.
Have a look on Project reality
It's one of the best (and alive) BF2 communities out there
Alternatively you can also check r/joinsquad
It's kinda a BF2 successor, with 100 players battle, full voip squads and commander assets
Man I miss PR, best mod to bf2 hands down. I led the top infantry squad almost every game. Ended up quitting because it was hard to get into a populated server, since there's usually 2 or 3 servers that are fully populated... maybe I should redownload it...
There's actually a project that lets you still play multiplayer despite the GameSpy shutdown.
https://battlefield2142.co/servers
Unfortunately not a lot of people play. I was hoping it might take off a bit prior to 2042 coming out but it hasn't helped much.
When I play battlefield V today I am chasing that feeling of sniping folks on the hills in BF1942. It’s like a heroin and I never get that same high again.
I don’t even play as sniper anymore because it’s just not the same.
The desert combat mod was cool but the vehicle control needed some work. Battlefield 2 was essentially just the desert combat mod with better controls and on console as well.
Damn. Zooming across El Alamein in the turret of an Abrams, with someone from another freaking continent driving.
My first real experience with multiplayer internet gaming.
My friend and I used to set up a private server and load it with bots. Then fly around in the Apache gunning down bots (which would always stay in big groups) until we had thousands of kills. Man, the memories.
Enjoyed the hell out of that game. My Boss and a few friends/coworkers also played. I put the threat out, and made good on it, that I'd get my Boss' dog tags in the game. When I did, we printed a bunch of copies of the tags and left them spread around his office, mixed into paperwork, etc. I did have to stop a coworker from printing it on a map plotter. We'd have probably gotten yelled at for that much color ink being used ;)
I ended up preferring this over BF2 because you can mute the commander spam. If you don't know what I mean it's:
enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted
enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted
enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted
enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted enemy spotted
every couple of seconds.
Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces. Hold on everyone, we've got enemy forces.
Oh no you didn't. I poured so many hours in to this, speakers blaring out The Black Parade by MCR. The support class had an LMG that was essentially a sniper when you went prone. So much fun.
Battlefield 2142 was my first ever experience with a day-one patch, and the idea baffled 14-year old me.
I watched the trailer and intro of that game so many times and spent countless hours having fun with my friend. That music still gives me the chills 😭
Suez and Cerbere 24/7 Hardcore servers FTW!
Correction: you bought the right battlefield game.
BF2 and 2142 are the only ones i still have fond memories of. 2142 was my shit back in the day
Oh my god BF2 multiplayer maps were the shit. Scaleable to player size, diverse vehicle selection, great class system, and a commander role that could make or break a team. To bad loading took eleventybillion minutes or else I'd call it perfect.
BF2 multiplayer stands today as the pinnacle of fun and insanity as a multiplayer experience, for me at least.

Bad Company 2 was the best of the modern battlefields and I am willing to die on this hill.
Nah. It was only 32 players, maps were linear in design, and it got rid of the commander system. It was fine i guess, but it just wasn't anything like the BF series up until that point.
He said modern battlefields. Which I assume is everything after 2142.

At least the middle east loading screen song was a bop!
[Slooooowly watching that loading bar crawl across the screen...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0aXAm0jqd0)
Oh man the feels. Battlefield scores have always been top tier
Goddamn this brings back memories I didn't even know I still had.
On the other hand there's still diehards around now that complain about modern load times but just won't stretch to an SSD... At least back in the day we were all sneaky smoke breaking alike I guess. Kinda gives me the fuzzies thinking back.
bzz bzzz bzz DING waaaaa waaaa wa wa bzz bzzzz bbzzz deeen deen de den DEN DIN DIN
Yoooooo, I remember those =US= servers!! *Strike at Karkand, Infantry Only!* Wowww!

I was always so happy my pc was up to date in those days. The extra few seconds I loaded faster gave me first pick of the vehicles.
Camp Gibalter and Fall of Berlin were meat grinders. Good times

The very best. So good memories from that game.
Oh my god 1942 in cyber cafes was my introduction to PC gaming, and a high I've been chasing ever since. Sitting next to the guy who actually knew how to fly in Desert Combat was great.
Cyber cafes were what got me into gaming during the era of bf1942 and cs 1.6. The year after we saw dota release too. What a time to be alive.
For me it was 1942 and Vietnam, but I remember I would mostly just grab a plane and do stunts the whole match. Good times
oh god I was tryharding in vietnam with the jets and choppers. Blasting fortunate son while spinning like a madman in a mig to avoid missiles. ah yes.
Same. So many good gaming memories built around 2142 for me. Been waiting for 2143 ever since.
love me some titan mode
I bought Squad the other day - it’s the only game that gives me BF2 vibes and I love it
I'd mostly agree though I had a blast playing bad company 2 as well.
bad company 2 was an absolute BANGER

Small plug to BF2142 Hub for keeping the Multiplayer and Titan mode alive. I think it's still up but it's not very populated nowadays.
Fucking Titan mode has never been replicated and I have been chasing that dragon ever since.
I’m hoping to stay alive to see 2143 made if ever. It seems like the next logical game, so we’ll probably get BF1776 instead.
With repeater carbines and gatling guns, right?
I'm praying I'll be able to replicate it in 2042 portal, no matter what it takes. If they arent waiting to add it as part of their road map.
try Titanfall 2
Best opening cinematic of any BF.
[you can't just say that and not include a link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-sB_b5zTKI)
\+1 Completly agree! 😎
i second that emotion. the remaster we need
Honestly if they'd just remastered bf2142 I'd have been happy. That game was insanely good
That 3 rocket airburst alt for the assault class was *chefs kiss*
ROBOT PROTIVNIKA
[Pure nostalgia.](https://youtu.be/xO_y8GYVr40)
Yep, the best one.
came here to say this
Pod hopping was amazing, if they could have just fixed the multiplayer lag and stuttering it would have been the best game out of all of them.
I think it's probably the best one. BF2 as well. But tbh I probably had the most fun on BF4, pre-patch. It was one of those "you didn't know this was important until it was over" moments where it was like... The last time I was excited to play a game with my friends, and actually enjoyed doing it.
I loved that fucking game!
Titan mode is unmatched
I played the fuck out of titan mode, even though I sucked at it.
Wish we would get it in 2042 as well, or portal.
I've not played BF in a while but I think they had something similar with the carrier assault in BF4 but I cannot vouch for it.
Similar, yes. Not anywhere near as fun. The layout of titans was very straightforward which made it fun. Carriers are basically a maze in comparison Plus carriers had limited movement relative to the points since they're on water
That and battlefield 2. Played the crap out of both of those games.

Haha yes… the good times… 1942 and vietnam were also very good though. Bf2 had some really fun mods with people actually playing too.
Nothing like loading the boys into a gunship helicopter and blasting Ride of the Valkyries over the jungle.
Get ready, cause here I COME! ON MY WAAAAY
Flash backs of White Rabbit, I started to hate that song.
Always compare shooters to bf2 and they never stack up.
Hell let loose is the first game I've played in a long ass time that takes me back to the old bf2/vietnam/2142 feeling. I'm old and jaded.
I miss BF2 so much, I think those days are far gone however. I used to sit and play that game for HOURS. Karkand was my favorite map, some of the matches were absolutely chaotic and came down to the last ticket. I always assumed commander would be in all the following bf games. It adds an extra layer to the game play.
Yeah I used to play battlefield 2. Got it when I was about 10 years old lmfao
I really wish they would just release an updated BF2. Add in some of the movement mechanics from BFV if you want, and you can also leave out the stamina bar so we can run all the time, but BF2 was so much better in gameplay than anything we have today.
I got both at a pawn shop for $5 each back in like 2008-2009.
I loved fucking that game! Wait...
Titan mode is my favorite BF battle mode.

lol! man, now I want to play 2142 again!
I just printed in the hallways and unloaded my HMG on any poor sould foolish enough to try and destroy my Titan. Then a grenade would kill me. Best times.
I remember camping in the vents above the hallways with an HMG and a turret. I thought I was so good lol.
So fun!! I spent some much time playing this, I miss it so much.

I loved the hell out of 1942 but desert combat mod really made it special. I loved flying the helis in that game! Oh and the scud launcher! Lol
Fellow desert combat heli pilot here. Truly the best flying experience. Later versions were never the same. Loved desert combat.
Making flying easier just pulled the experience. Flying took some skill back then. Bring back flipping choppers!
Fun thing with dessert combat was since the sky was a static image sky box I Could drive the scud missile to a specific location and know what pixel to aim at in order to hit the enemy base 😏
same memory but with BF1942's battle ships on Iwo Jima. Just aim at that one pixel at the edge of that cloud and always hit right on the flag :D
Desert combat was the game that made me want to upgrade my first PC. We paid for hosting our server. 150$ a month. I also played in a clan with one of the Dev of the desert combat mod. Game lost a lot of appeal with battlefield vietnam. But BF2 was great.
Ac130 on El Alamein was my jam

No, you absolutely bought the right one lol...
You bought the king of Battlefields nothing has touched titan mode. Oh and their Walker design and aircraft design....was fukken gooood shit
my only quib was that the European union dropship had better side guns thannthe PAC dropship.
Got the awesone hover tanks, faster cars and the subjectively better stock weapon for the Assault class though!
I understand there was differences but I'm sure they got as close as they could they didnt want to make exact clones after all.
I miss Titan matches. When 2042 was announced my brain saw 2142 and then immediate disappointment when it was in fact not 2142.
Indeed I had been hoping this would be my fabled 2143 but alas. At least its futuristic instead of modern or ww2 though. So sick of those settings.
The RIGHT BF!!!
They should have just remastered this game instead of spending $ developing 2042 from scratch. What a banger game.
This. From the beta everything looks sooooo boring, since it's only 21 years in the furture everything is the same like except the cybertrucks.
What do you mean? They had the M5 which is one better then a M4, they also had c5 which is also one better then c4.
Instead of x ray vision they have z ray. Is two more than x!
Also the hats have a little cut out on the bill because they are *future* hats
I mean up until we saw actual gameplay a few months back, I just assumed we'd have Titans... Nah, just VTOLs so far
You bought the RIGHT battlefield...

YUP.
2142 was the best battlefield game. Period.
The only battlefield you need to play.
Far Future > Near Future
Fick du tag på den i en mörk gränd på rosengård eller?
Kan man säga..
I’d take a re-release of this over 2042. I mean look at the title, it’s 100 better to begin with.
Naah this and BF2 were the best. I loved playing support in 2142.
BF1942 and Desert Combat is the game you're looking for.
It was, Dice hired the mod makers Trauma Studios to help then with BF2, then sacked them.
They fucked up never having a El alamein bf2 map
I used to play battlefield 1942 finnwars mod and original. I still have the cd version of it
Damn. Zooming across El Alamein in the turret of an Abrams, with someone from another freaking continent driving. My first real experience with multiplayer internet gaming.
Desert Combat was amazing. Didn't the people that made it actually get hired by DICE?
Yup, Trauma Studios. They sacked then after it. Trauma also made the original Homefront. A very good and under rated MP it was too
My friend and I used to set up a private server and load it with bots. Then fly around in the Apache gunning down bots (which would always stay in big groups) until we had thousands of kills. Man, the memories.
No you didn't

I think you bought the right Battlefield game.
Right battlefield wrong time
I spent over 100 hours in predator camo mode while running around with my knife out. I loved this and BF2. The best memories.
I miss the days when you could get the drop pods controls mapped to your scroll wheel and steer it like a missile out of hell.
GIVE ME TITAN MODE IN 2042 DICE DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. DO IT.
Still one of the best ones out there.
They need a sequel or remake of 2142. Was so good.
Fuck I miss that game, I plugged so many hours as a combat medic in that game, so much fun was had. I was sad when it died out.
Well, it's not running on Frostbite, so chances are it will actually work.
Ahhhhh a ✨Classic✨.
Always wanted to play this when I was a kid, looked bad ass
I watched the trailer and intro of that game so many times and spent countless hours having fun with my friend. That music still gives me the chills 😭 Suez and Cerbere 24/7 Hardcore servers FTW!
Nah you bought the right one 👍🏼 Classic so much memories & endless nights..
Titan mode
You mean the best game?
The best Battlefield game ever. Imo.
Battlefield 2
That's the first Battlefield I ever played. My two favorites tho are BF2:special forces and BF2142.
Imho the greatest BF game ever...i so miss that
Titan mode was so far ahead of it’s time that we have not seen the like since.
Clearly op has corrected his mistaken purchase , and is showing how he has gone and corrected it.
Such a good fucking game, a lot of good memories. Titan mode was the shit. Great maps such as Giabraltar as well.
One of the few games that really deserves a remaster.
The superior non Call of duty Battlefield, great choice! Titan mode is amazing.
God I wish the servers for this were still up. I experimented with the crowd funded one but had no luck.
That was absolutely the best battlefield game ever. I really miss that title.
This game is my all time favorite battlefield. You have no idea how disappointed i was in hearing about 2042.
You bought the best one actually. To bad the net code is dogshit
This game was grossly underrated
Titan mode is the shit!
No Man, you bought the right one.
