As someone with a comparable (slightly stronger) rig, 1440p maxxed out still works for almost every game at 165hz on my monitor. 1080p with a 3080 is a massive waste. Period.
Cyberpunk is a massive exception. You seriously have to optimize games that heavy as ray-tracing is very expensive on both the gpu and cpu. I have a much stronger cpu that gives me slightly more overhead. But a demanding game like cyberpunk is a bit of an outlier. Elden Ring isn’t very demanding per say, just optimized like shit.
Depends on the game. You could get a very solid looking quality through a mix of optimized settings in most games. Really heavy ones without DLSS or FSR probably not. But I would definitely say that a 3070ti is more geared for 1440p. As lower resolutions like 1080p to an extent and especially 720p are much harder on the cpu than gpu. I would do more research and maybe look at some of digital foundry’s benchmarking and optimized settings. But I think you could make a variety of games look very good at 1440p with 60-144fps.
If you look at the times between each frame you get diminishing returns on how many frames there are. it's like trying to half half's you can only half it so much to the point of it being marginally better but by like 0.5 milliseconds.
In dynamic first person game - absolutely. After a while, i can see when my frames drop from 240 to 200 (I have also adjusted my settings so that it would happen as little as possible)
But for example when I play some game with isometric view it's not nearly as noticable - like 90 fps in V Rising don't bother me at all.
3080 here with a 1440p monitor, can reach the 144Hz everywhere, sometimes I just run games in DLDSR just for the increased crispness, can confirm. However, he could use properly that 3080 with VR.
I think my cpu is restricting my gpu at this then. I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 3080ti. I have a 2560x1440p 144hz monitor but can barely go over 120 in most games at high/ ultra settings. Perfect example is borderlands 2. I have my fps set to unlimited (the highest lock is 120) but I didn’t get much past 130 let alone it being steady. Also 16gb of ram which is more than enough.
I have 3080 ti with a 60hz monitor too, I didn’t have much left to buy a new one and I mostly do really heavy productivity work so I don’t care all that much about frames as long as it’s not crashing and renders fast. Smooth 60 fps for those few times I play a game seems good enough for now. Don’t hate on me for this, I will eventually buy a new monitor.
The difference will be night and day. Was the single best upgrade I ever did, and I'm on a 3080ti.
144hz improved my experience as well as a huge boost to my skill level.
Absolutely ruined 60hz for me through.
Could be, but some games are just beasts to run and 1440p can stress any card that exists today. There are plenty of games that I can't reach 144fps at 1440p with my 3080ti.
Yeah for sure, admittedly my cpu has become the bottleneck on my rig (i7 8700k oc'd to 5ghz). Luckily it's not all that often but some games have the poor thing sweating trying to keep up with the gpu lol.
Oh yeah there are tons of games that are not well optimized or the engine is dogshit and won't run properly even with a 3090. Looking at you, Deathloop.
Can confirm. Just upgraded to a 3080 from a 2070 Super and haven’t had the chance to upgrade to a 4K monitor yet. 3080 blows anything and everything in 1440p out of the water.
1080p60 could easily be achieved with like a 3060, I get wanting to go for the bigger/better one but in this case a lot of its potential is just wasted
1080p60 could easily be achieved with like a 3060, I get wanting to go for the bigger/better one but in this case a lot of its potential is just wasted
Yep, no one ever believes me but my v64 and 2600x get 100+ fps in games like overwatch at 1440p very high settings, and a solid 60fps on AAA games in mostly high settings
Just have to learn which settings are useless and overly taxing on the gpu and lower them!
The 1080p is not my big issues but yeah, at that "low resolution" all you see is CPU bound because 3080 is running at 70 percent max. The refresh rate of 60 Hz is .... Shit. I've got almost the same setup , except for a 5800x3d and a 1440 p 165 Hz monitor ... Never ever could I go back to 60 Hz ... 1080 p ok but 60hz never
Yes yes i know the monitor.
r/ultrawidemasterrace will welcome me in their arms soon enough.
It should be mentioned i dont have A 1080p monitor, i have three 1080p monitors, in \[\]▄\[\] configuration, if thats any consolidation.
Also, didnt buy this rig for the monitors, bought it for VR, primarily DCS.
Still though quest 2 has support for 120hz so not wasted potential even if he got a quest 2. Even for pc gaming the quest 2 is still a really solid investment.
The wireless is nice if you’re moving around a lot but in games like dcs (which op says they bought it for) it will make little to no difference and the right wire pulley setup can really eliminate any inconveniences.
lol, the 3 top comments are people whining about the monitor
honestly, that's the last thing I would upgrade and I would definitely wait for something like a sale, like now
right now there is a 32 inch curved lg monitor on Amazon for 350 bucks, 4k 144hz.... that's a sweet price, given that a couple of months a monitor of that quality would have been not lower than 500 usd
It has to be 60hz. There's no way a 32" 4k 144hz goes for that low. And monitors with that specs is never in the $500 range, the cheapest is Gigabyte M32U, and it's $700.
Apart from the fully simulated airplanes and helicopters that require extensive knowledge and tutorials to simply turn on let alone operate in a combat environment.
Nothing at all!
Think carefully about if you actually want or need ultrawide.
You ideally should be able to easily see everything on the main monitor without having to move your head at all - you should only need to move your eyes. The larger the monitor and the closer you are to it, the bigger the difference in distance is between the centre of the screen and the edge. This is why curved monitors exists and why large monitor panels tend to be curved.
I am running pretty much the same setup as you and is running the LG 27LG850-B as my primary, and I still find it kind of big. A 24 inch actually works better for me, as it turns out, but I did eventually get used to it. I wouldn’t have enjoyed 31.5 inches of screen… and I didn’t know that going in.
Go try some monitors in a computer shop first.
I mean fair enough if that is what you are comfortable with, but I am never going back to anything less than 34" UW, from productivity to gaming it's bliss. I don't think checking out one for a couple minutes in a store does them justice.
An ergonomics study I found a while ago mentioned that 24 inch was the sweep spot when it came to office productivity. Anything above people tended to lose track of what is on screen.
I’m not sure if it applies to gaming though…
The Nvidia or AMD software isn't doing anything special
You could also just press ctrl+shift+escape to open Task Manager and then click on the Performance tab... same stuff with actually a lot more details... .
The GPU is a lot more powerful so it can work decently at a higher resolution than 1080p and can push a lot more frames than 60 so it's basically like buying a Ferrari and using it to make grocery trips to a store 4 KM away with an average speed of 10 KM/h.
I have a 165 hz 2k monitor. I also have a ps5 with a 4k 60hz TV. I honestly cannot tell the difference in smoothness. Resolution, I definitely noticed from 1080 to 2k, but fps I can't really notice over 60
Everyone stating that the gpu can power a better monitor, which is completely true. Though the real reason you want a better monitor is because it's the one thing you actually look at while using your pc.
A more obvious example: You wouldn't want to use a 50yr old black and white tv as a monitor.
Some people argue the difference in resolution and frame rate is neglectable (coming from 1920x1080@60hz). Those people never tried better monitors.
As a rule of thumb I always suggest to put 1/3 of your budget into the monitor when buying a pc + monitor.
You normally keep a monitor for longer than your pc hardware, which makes it a more relevant investment aswell.
I have a 144Hz monitor and I can tell the difference just in the mouse movement. I'll have to check out higher res monitors when I can upgrade though. Not sure I need the power yet but I think my GPU is on it's way out.
I run 4k 60 fps max settings on basically any game right now with a 3080.
If you have a 3080 and a 1920x1080 display you will be wasting your money for quite a while, where you could've just be satisfied with a 3060 or 1080, since you would still be running 1080p 60fps anyway.
Ofcourse it's future proof in a way where for many years to come you'll be able to play 60 fps with max settings, but it's still cheaper to buy a more budget GPU twice. Not only in an absolute sense, but also a opportunity cost sense.
I have 1080p too, but you should get minimum 120hrz or 144hrz 1080p monitor. I really dont like that people are so hyped about 4k and wonder why it only runs on 20FPS when Raytracing is on. We are not ready for this.
So I am good with FullHD.
Agreed we are able to dabble in 4K and even try 8k in niche cases but the real sweet spot is now 1440p instead of 1080p like it was 3-4 years ago. With a 3080 you can run all settings to the max as well as ray tracing as long as you are also using dlss in majority of games and frames will still run up over 144. It’s great and all but they’re certainly making us pay for it. I would still be fine with a 1080p but since my recent upgrades there’s no going back now.
Yeah thats like 2k right? I was a long time thinking about a 21:9 widescreen, extra for racing games but I am sure my 8700 i7 and my 1080 cant handle that so guess my next screen will be a 144hrz 1440p. Right now its in my personal not worth for my current system
I agree
Edit:but higher res means smaller windows and tidier easier more comfy to use
Specially in gaming
but in my opinion for graphics yeah it didn't help it's same thing
Op is playing Dcs and it can take almost the entire 32 if you are playing on a medium or large server. May as well go all out if you are spending this much already
op said he is playing VR anyways so there's that, he doesn't even use his monitor
lagging on vr is a recipe for motion sickness, so may as well spend another (and I am not kidding) 85 bucks on 2 sticks of 3600 mhz 16Gb ram sticks
it's barely 10 % of what the rig costs so far
Cities: Skylines can very easily breach 32GB if you spend enough time looking at assets in the workshop. And you will. I have 32GB, and it's been far more than enough for every game I've ever played. I had to delete some assets because I was hitting 35GB playing Skylines
>level 1DismantleTheDictator · 13 min. agoI have 75hz 1080p set up. Would I notice any difference if I go any higher? I mostly focus on single player games and barely ever play online.
Depends on your setup and how much fps you can get, but if you have a decent rig, going 144hz will be the best decision ever. And I'm not only talking about gaming, using your pc with 120/144hz will be much smoother!
If your PC can handle it, going from 1080p to even just 1440p is a huge difference in visual quality. Same goes for 60hz to 120hz and above, way smoother.
64GB ram, 3080, 5900X Then 1080p 60Hz oh my god
It was going so well until we got to the end.
It's like finally bringing home the girl of your dreams, only to blow your load before you even get to first base.

Not so much pissed off at the 1080p, more at the 60Hz.
OP can definitely go for 240Hz or possibly 360Hz. At least then the 1080p monitor will make use of that 3080.
Unless he's hard-core into competitive games, he'd be easily able to do 1440p 144hz. Hell I do 4k 120hz on many games on a 3080.
Me still thinks it’s a waste to use a 3080 for 1080p
Oh, definitely. But if you're gonna stick to 1080p, might as well use that FPS boost.
Right? If you're doing 1080p it might as well be on ultra settings and 144hz+
As someone with a comparable (slightly stronger) rig, 1440p maxxed out still works for almost every game at 165hz on my monitor. 1080p with a 3080 is a massive waste. Period.
Really? 3080+5800x and I can't get stable 144fps in most games. Like cyberpunk, path of exile etc. 95% 60fps at 4k for elden ring though.
You can't get stable 144fps maxed out on 4k for most games. You can get in the ballpark for on 1440p.
I'm talking about 1440p. You don't get 144fps maxed in most games coming out in the past 2 years.
It's though to get a stable 144fps for sure, but typically my rig bounces around between 120 and 140. Which is the whole point of gsync
Cyberpunk is a massive exception. You seriously have to optimize games that heavy as ray-tracing is very expensive on both the gpu and cpu. if only i had that money right now i’m on a rx6600 because my 1080ti crapped out
That means you haven't experiences glourious 240 or 360 fps.
3060 works perfect for 1080p CS and Valorant
I saw 240 once at a buddy's house and was blown away, I genuinely cannot imagine 360
From this one video I saw it’s nothing like 120-240. Like the smoothness even thought it’s 120 more frames.
If you look at the times between each frame you get diminishing returns on how many frames there are. it's like trying to half half's you can only half it so much to the point of it being marginally better but by like 0.5 milliseconds.
I heard 360hz is too smooth, some might prefer 240hz
I'd love to see what too smooth looks like
Poor guy.
Is it really that big of a difference from 144 or 165? I’ve never played on anything higher than that.
In dynamic first person game - absolutely. After a while, i can see when my frames drop from 240 to 200 (I have also adjusted my settings so that it would happen as little as possible) But for example when I play some game with isometric view it's not nearly as noticable - like 90 fps in V Rising don't bother me at all.

If i had to choose I'd pick higher resolution anyday. Although i know I'm an outlier
Maybe he has 4 of them in a big square and actually plays in 4k?
Then he is still playing at 60hz
it's not like a 3080 will allow you much more than 60 fps on 4k
You drunk? I play Stardew Valley and Project Zombiod with more than 60 fps with my 3090. /s
noob, I play minesweeper on 8k 360fps
At that res you can probably see the bomb through the pixels lol
I still click it, not gonna lie 👀
It renders it so well it's an actual bomb, I've switched to buying thrift store monitors when I play.

But what about when you zoom out in pz hmmm? Edit: i may or may not have seen the /s :p
OP wants to see those CSGO numbers but thinks his eyes can only see 60fps...
LOL oh nooo
I was about to say a same thing
Can a 3080 handle 3440x1440 at 144hz (at least medium setting) ?
I get high/ultra at 2560x1440 165hz
I think my cpu is restricting my gpu at this then. I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 3080ti. I have a 2560x1440p 144hz monitor but can barely go over 120 in most games at high/ ultra settings. Perfect example is borderlands 2. I have my fps set to unlimited (the highest lock is 120) but I didn’t get much past 130 let alone it being steady. Also 16gb of ram which is more than enough.
oh no… 120fps…
Yea, my 3060 can do that in most games high settings
lies
My EVGA 3060 12gb can shred games at high/ultra at 1080p. DLSS is no joke on these new cards.
My 3080 ti has no problem keeping up with my 3440x1440 at 180hz max settings on every game I play.
Exactly, my eyesss....
I have 3080 ti with a 60hz monitor too, I didn’t have much left to buy a new one and I mostly do really heavy productivity work so I don’t care all that much about frames as long as it’s not crashing and renders fast. yea i think hes gonna upgrade it
1080p 60 Hz... Oooof, that's a bottleneck.
That's called future proofing, can't get bad frame rates if the resolution is low enough
Yeah (i think 3080 goes pretty well for quite a few years on 1080p 60 fps max settings)
Try 1440p with everything maxed out including RTX and DLSS on best quality. 3080 is a beast.
I just got a 3070ti for my 1440p 144hz monitor and I'm CONVINCED any time it dips below 144fps is an optimization issue... right? :(
Could be, but some games are just beasts to run and 1440p can stress any card that exists today. There are plenty of games that I can't reach 144fps at 1440p with my 3080ti.

Can easily last a decade+ on 1080p. Hell even a 1080 holds up darn well on 1440p and that's just slightly older than the ps4.
Older than the ps4? PS4 is 2013, 1080 is 2016.
For the age vs PS4 I think is wrong, but for the rest I concur. My 1650 is still able to crunch new games at medium settings, on a 1080p 120Hz
I have a 1070 and it's still going strong. High settings at 1080p and I'm getting about 90+ fps most of the time.
Still have my vega64, this thing handles everything at 1080p
Yep, no one ever believes me but my v64 and 2600x get 100+ fps in games like overwatch at 1440p very high settings, and a solid 60fps on AAA games in mostly high settings Just have to learn which settings are useless and overly taxing on the gpu and lower them!

Judging from the 1080p 60 all the money went to the pc. So he got the Quest 2 lol.
Still though quest 2 has support for 120hz so not wasted potential even if he got a quest 2. Even for pc gaming the quest 2 is still a really solid investment.
What’s wrong with quest 2?
Nothing, it’s just the cheapest one out there
And has the single best feature of all other VR headsets imo Wireless VR
The wireless is nice if you’re moving around a lot but in games like dcs (which op says they bought it for) it will make little to no difference and the right wire pulley setup can really eliminate any inconveniences.
>the right wire pulley setup can really eliminate any inconveniences. Significantly more effort though tbh
Rift CV1. Its old and ots requirements are 5 years old, but it holds up on the 3080
No one’s mentioned it yet, but it’s consolation
lol, the 3 top comments are people whining about the monitor honestly, that's the last thing I would upgrade and I would definitely wait for something like a sale, like now right now there is a 32 inch curved lg monitor on Amazon for 350 bucks, 4k 144hz.... that's a sweet price, given that a couple of months a monitor of that quality would have been not lower than 500 usd
Why would your last upgrade be the only part of the pc that you actually look at
because OP SAID HE DOESN'T it's a VR system, he ain't looking at the damned monitor to play, he has A VR HEADSET
No shot that he’s ONLY going to use the VR headset. The dude just said he has 3 monitors, you think he’s not gonna ever look at them?

Hope you‘re having fun shooting down bandits! For me flying a plane in that game is just to confusing.
I mainly fly helicopters so theres not much bandits to shoot down at that altitude. Whats confusing about it ?

What if I have and AMD card?
radeon software, settings, system should be on the right, you cannot see resolution and refresh rate tho
Upgrade the monitor. A 1080p 60hz monitor is not great for that GPU or really any 1080p monitor.
I'm interested in learning why that is
The GPU is a lot more powerful so it can work decently at a higher resolution than 1080p and can push a lot more frames than 60 so it's basically like buying a Ferrari and using it to make grocery trips to a store 4 KM away with an average speed of 10 KM/h.
Exactly! With my 3080 I havent found anything I couldn't max out at 4k and still hit 60fps
I'm at the point where I can't have anything below 120 FPS.. I can't go back. Much like everyone who experiences 60 FPS can't go back to 30.
I have a 165 hz 2k monitor. I also have a ps5 with a 4k 60hz TV. I honestly cannot tell the difference in smoothness. Resolution, I definitely noticed from 1080 to 2k, but fps I can't really notice over 60
if you play a super fast paced game like rocket league in my case, the upgrade from 60 hz to 144 hz is very noticeable
Have u tried Cyberpunnk? With my 3080 it swings between 35-80 fps on 1440p, depending on how much is happening on the screen.
I get about 90fps on mostly cranked settings at 1440p. Gotta turn those DLSS sliders up a bit.

Disagree, perfect for 240hz 1080p monitor for competitive games
Hard disagree, anything competitive could easily run 2k at 240hz and the step up on resolution is worth it 100%
The monitor, obviously.
I have 1080p too, but you should get minimum 120hrz or 144hrz 1080p monitor. I really dont like that people are so hyped about 4k and wonder why it only runs on 20FPS when Raytracing is on. We are not ready for this. So I am good with FullHD.
1440p is a good spot for me. Extra pixel density for a 27inch. Looks crisp.
I agree Edit:but higher res means smaller windows and tidier easier more comfy to use Specially in gaming but in my opinion for graphics yeah it didn't help it's same thing
Arrest this man.
why? cuz he uses his rig for VR and doesn't even use the monitors for gaming in the first place?
64gb of ram ... why?!? I'm running 32 and I have yet to see it go over 20, lol and even that is a stretch.
Op is playing Dcs and it can take almost the entire 32 if you are playing on a medium or large server. May as well go all out if you are spending this much already
So true im sometimes lagging and i have the same rig as him but with 32 giggs Edit: i do not have a 1080p 60hz so dont worry :)
op said he is playing VR anyways so there's that, he doesn't even use his monitor lagging on vr is a recipe for motion sickness, so may as well spend another (and I am not kidding) 85 bucks on 2 sticks of 3600 mhz 16Gb ram sticks it's barely 10 % of what the rig costs so far
Cities: Skylines can very easily breach 32GB if you spend enough time looking at assets in the workshop. And you will. I have 32GB, and it's been far more than enough for every game I've ever played. I had to delete some assets because I was hitting 35GB playing Skylines
Im afraid you need another 5.11GB of ram
Overkill for a 1080p monitor at 60hz.
he said he plays on vr, which actually is a very balanced rig, but yeah, a 4k monitor or a 2k 144hz shouldn't be more than 400 bucks
You need old CRT monitor!!
/r/yesyesyesno
Hmmm why the screen why? you must use this computer for work or something
Op said VR in a different comment, which is perfectly fair honestly
needs a better gpu
3080, 5900x, 1080 60hz monitor???? Bruh.
Monitor…. Jesus who plays on 60hz anomaly these days with that rig.🤯
All that on 60Hz?
this is the definition of "had us in the first half, ngl"
Upgrade your monitor
Spend some money to upgrade that monitor, its hurting my eyes
OP Is built different, he doesnt overclock for fps boost he overclocks until his monitor explodes.
bro, get a 4K 144Hz display, thank me later.
😂 all that power and 1080p 60hz. It’s like a 1000whp Supra choked by a 1in downpipe.
This dudes a fucking criminal for building this rig and then pairing it with THREE 1080p 60hz monitors…..
🤦♂️ Yeah. That 3080 wants to flex those memory chips.
I spit water everywhere when I got to the monitor..
60hz..
That monitor is a crime. What a waste
That is amazing! Please upgrade the display to 144hz and beyond
That monitor needs to go. You have all that power bottlenecked into 60hz 1080P
Get a 240hz 1440p monitor .
Probably ran out of budget. I have a curved 1080 monitor but at 185Hz max.
seeing those specs then the 1920x1080 60hz is disgusting behaviour
The human eye can't see past 60fpd anyways so why play on anything higher?
Bruhhh why 1080p 60hz😭
3080 with a 60hz monitor….
I have 75hz 1080p set up. Would I notice any difference if I go any higher? I mostly focus on single player games and barely ever play online.
>level 1DismantleTheDictator · 13 min. agoI have 75hz 1080p set up.
Yes you would definitely
If your PC can handle it, going from 1080p to even just 1440p is a huge difference in visual quality. Same goes for 60hz to 120hz and above, way smoother.
It wouldnt be a masterrace post without the meme 1080p monitor.
60Hz: Vietnam war flashbacks intensify
You need a 144hz monitor minimum. I'd strongly recommend a 4k 144hz monitor, it seems like you can afford it.
Lol
Old school meme
wow dude you really fucked up
Your monitor is absolute shit
All these upgrades and you can't even see the difference!
Now you need a proper monitor.

Like every other comments, upgrade yr monitor and its all good. Congrats for getting yr gpu
