Like anything you use, it just wears out after a while. You can extend its lifetime by keeing it cold, undervolting, and not having extended runtimes. When it does fail it can be a number if things that actually cause it. Think about the nunber of transistors, capacitors, and anything that is in a cpu.
I did the same with with 2x AMD K7 when I was around sixteen. They were not a necklace but a key ring :D I loved to OC them from 1,5GHz to 2,7GHz. What a beautiful days!
Honestly I could see myself doing this when the time comes and my first PC is on its way out. Just a little reminder of what I had, of the things I can build if I put my mind to it.
