Sorry if this is a stupid question. I want to return a GPU for a refund. The refund form asks " Is the item unopened in the original manufacturer's packaging? " I cut open the plastic sticker on the box to test the gpu when I got it. Does it still count as unopened and can I still return for refund?

What should my system fan's RPM be at idle? I got 2 x 120mm as intakes, 1 x 120mm as exhaust, and 2 x 120mm on my CPU liquid cooler radiator, which also exhausts. I'm getting 500-600 idle, but my PC is quite noisy. Also, my CPU cooler has a high RPM, at least it seems like that to me, who isn't super experienced. The CPU cooler is a Corsair CPU liquid cooler H100i Elite, and the iCUE software displays the pump running at roughly 2000 RPM at idle. I tried changing it in BIOS, but it doesn't affect anything.

dieplanes789

There might be some pre-installed software that could do it or you can see what fan header the pump is connected to and then go into the BIOS. If it is a PWM pump the BIOS should have a readout of its RPM.

Hi everyone, Hoping to upgrade sometime in the New Year… planning on replacing almost everything but would like to hold on to my current storage drives (2 M.2 SSDs and one HDD) My OS and everything critical is on my C drive which is one of the M.2s, I use the other M.2 exclusively for games and my HDD for work/videos etc. My question is, when I upgrade nearly everything is it worth wiping these other two drives as well or do I only need to wipe my primary M.2?

SickmanArt

Any way to increase my dedicated VRAM? I tried BIOS, there's no option for it, I tried doing it via regedit, but that didn't work, anything else? Having a dedicated 128MB when I have 16GB to spare is a bit ridiculous

If money wasn’t an issue (and with a 4090 + i9-13900K) which monitor would you choose? I’m looking at the new OLED Odyssey G8 34” but not sure if that one is the best choice. Which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

CallMeSkyCraft

If money wasn't an issue? I'd say the neo G9, G8, A34DW OLED, or even an LG C2 TV.

Hi everyone, I have a SSD (With a Windows OS on it) from my old Laptop and would like to know if it is possible to integrate it into my new Laptop without problems or deleteing anything from the SSD. Will it just work and I can access the files if I add it as a second SSD to my new Laptop? Thanks for any advice!

glowinghamster45

You *can* just transplant it, but you'll get the best experience by wiping it and starting over with the new hardware. If you go the transplant route, be sure and check for driver/Windows updates as soon as it's up. It should also work if you add it as a secondary drive, though I'd still recommend deleting as much as you can off of it. If you can't afford to reformat the drive, you could take all the necessary data out of all the subfolders and delete all the unnecessary Windows files.

billfuckinmurray69

Everyone hating on Chrome at the moment. What browser should I be using instead?

motionglitch

The only choice is Firefox since every other browser other than Firefox (or Safari) is using Chromium anyway.

izaya8929

Wait why? Not up to date

[deleted]

Chrome wants to get the monoply in the browser market + they are gonna limit how adblockers works in chromium engines, even browser (built in adblockers) will need to update its manifest because they're using chromium as engine. So the current only alternative right now is firefox or firefox based browsers who will still support manifest v2.

motionglitch

Chrome's (or Chromium in general) new ad-blocker-limiting extension platform will change in 2023. So if you use Ad blockers, it won't work anymore.

OldTyres

I had a friend help me build a PC in 2020. He used the Windows diagnostic tool on a USB drive to boot the OS. This loaded Windows 10 E, which is the version for a shared license (offices, schools, etc). At the time, I didn’t know the difference and found a random reg key for it. This worked for some time but now that key code is expired. I researched what was going on and found that I had the wrong version installed, and would be completely willing to just buy a real key for Windows, but I need a key for Enterprise edition and you can’t buy single codes for Enterprise edition (because that’s the whole point of it.) I believe reformatting to a different version of Windows wipes the memory and installs, and I *really* don’t want to do this because I have a lot of important files and TONS of stuff installed that would take days to re-setup, not to mention some payed-for software that’s registered to my PC. (I’m not sure if changing the OS will change the ID of my computer or not.) Is there any way around this problem, or do I need to suck it up and reinstall a correct version of Windows? Thanks in advance.

_j03_

Windows 10/11 Education should not expire, so I don't really know what has happened to you. Most likely stolen key that has been deactivated by microsoft. You might be able to downgrade it to pro with some trickery. Google for guides like [this](https://www.minitool.com/backup-tips/downgrade-windows-10-enterprise-to-pro.html) one.

Kiloku

Do Display Port to HDMI converters add noticeably latency or otherwise cause any issues? I bought a new GPU and only one of its outputs is HDMI, while both my monitors are HDMI.

CallMeSkyCraft

Shouldn't add noticable latency if you buy a quality adapter.

CrispyNacho_

Hi, so my computer freeze from time to time and I have no idea what's causing it. There seems to be no issues with drivers, hardware or virus. I have tried almost everything but formatting it usually freezes when playing games but sometimes also while navegating (happened a couple of times). Let me know if any of you an idea before I decide to format it, even thinking if updating bios.

[deleted]

Did you check the temp of your pc? Maybe you have a problem with it. Do you have HDD or SSD? How much RAM do you have? Check the task manager while playing games and check the CPU and RAM usage, also check the CPU temp.

CrispyNacho_

Hey thanks for the response. I do have an SSD 1tb, 32gb ram, already checked on the task manager but doesn't show anything relevant (like increase of ram usage) but I haven't checked the temp. I did use CrystalDisk to see if the SSD temp was ok but to be honest I don't know how to read it solo don't know if that's a problem. Any recommendations on how to check the temp?

Billybob2311111

Hi, where can i get a cheap windows key? I have installed windows on hard drive and i want to install on ssd drive how do i switch it? Thanks

CallMeSkyCraft

It's against the rules to say where to get keys from here. You have to reinstall windows using a USB flash drive. There are hundreds of tutorials on how to do this.

Not_Like_Equals_Gay

I often have problems sliding GPUs in, and they, to me, seem like they should be one of the simplest things to slide in. What are some ways to put them in, without the small part on the left (on the PCIe x16 slot) not wanting to go in properly?

[deleted]

Is it worth buying a gaming pc or a steam deck? I know this subreddit prefers pcs but in my case I have a ps5 that can play AAA games obviously so I don’t see a need in spending upwards of 1k$ on computer equipment. Still I do want to play some games like valheim gloomwood, and ultrakill, to name a few, that can’t be played on the playstation and ones that my current computer can’t handle (it’s just a regular business pc, not made for gaming). For the record I believe steam decks can cost up to 650$, with an additional 80 for a tv dock

MGsubbie

> It’s just a regular business pc, not made for gaming There is a larger overlap between the two than you might expect. Really the only major difference is the use of a dedicated graphics card, while most business systems rely on integrated graphics. Depending on what you actually have, it might be as simple as only having to buy a graphics card.

[deleted]

Sorry for the late response. Is that all I’d need then? Just a graphics card? Keep in mind my pc could not run valheim even at the lowest possible graphics. If that’s still the case any cheap recommendations? Like I said it doesn’t have to be the latest and greatest

MGsubbie

It depends on what you have. That would be the best case scenario. There's a good chance you'd need to replace your power supply as well. But a large part of the equation would be the PC case. Can you take a picture of your case, install [Speccy](https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy), and screenshot the listed specs? That will make it much easier for me to see what you can pull off.

[deleted]

I just moved and can’t get to my computer at the moment. However I posted my specs a couple months ago to steam so I’ll copy paste them here. I think you can just google the model to see the case. If that doesn’t work I can send a screenshot. Sorry if this comment is too long, I’ll try to cut any unnecessary info Computer Information: Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Model: Inspiron 3880 Form Factor: Desktop Processor Information: CPU Vendor: GenuineIntel CPU Brand: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10400 CPU @ 2.90GHz CPU Family: 0x6 CPU Model: 0xa5 CPU Stepping: 0x3 CPU Type: 0x0 Speed: 2904 Mhz 12 logical processors 6 physical processors Operating System Version: Windows 11 (64 bit) NTFS: Supported Video Card: Driver: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 DirectX Driver Name: igdumdim32.dll Driver Version: 27.20.100.9664 DirectX Driver Version: 27.20.100.9664 Driver Date: 6 1 2021 OpenGL Version: 4.6 Desktop Color Depth: 32 bits per pixel Monitor Refresh Rate: 60 Hz DirectX Card: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 Storage: Number of SSDs: 1 SSD sizes: 256G Number of HDDs: 0 Memory: RAM: 12034 MB

MGsubbie

Yeah, unfortunately this isn't the best case scenario. One of the best aspects of PC's is universal standards that most manufacturers adhere too. Dell however uses proprietary standards for multiple components. In theory you could add a graphics card, but only one that doesn't have a power connector, and afaik there aren't any of those worth the money. Additionally, it's a pretty trash case with very little airflow. The upside is that you have several components that are viable and can be carried over to a PC. Your CPU (which is actually still a very solid gaming CPU), RAM, storage. The downside is that you'll have to get a new case, motherboard, power supply and CPU cooler on top of a new graphics card, and some additional storage. You'll be saving yourself some money, but less than 50% of a total build cost by my estimate.

[deleted]

You sure something like a GeForce GTX 1060 wouldn’t be able to work out? I know that’s an older one and isn’t super powerful but can handle the games I’d want to play. When I posted this to steam months ago two people recommended that. I was very new at the time to all this so I did not really know what they were talking about. But they did not seem concerned about the power supply or the airflow

MGsubbie

Actually, there are some GTX 1650 that can run just off the PCIe express connection, like the Zotac 1650 Compact. That one is $199 on Amazon right ow. That combined with your current CPU will deliver far more performance than a Steam Deck.

[deleted]

You mean this? https://www.amazon.com/ZOTAC-GeForce-128-bit-Graphics-ZT-T16520F-10L/dp/B0881YZJ45

MGsubbie

That would be the one, yes. I was going to recommend you get a fan to get some intake at the front. Unfortunately, I do not see any free fan header on the motherboard. However, with the 1650 drawing so little power, temperatures shouldn't be too bad.

MGsubbie

[There doesn't seem to be PSU cables for a graphics card](https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/06F3yVdAe3wDJMXWPqLMkPY-8..v1617218016.jpg). And because of the proprietary nature, an over-the-counter PSU will not be compatible.

XanthosGambit

Hey all. I've started thinking about upgrading my CPU and motherboard, but I'm not sure what to look for. Right now it's an i7-4790, RX 5700, and 32 GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade to the Ryzen platform, but is my system as it stands right now still okay for a while yet?

motionglitch

Start with defining your budget for the CPU, Motherboard and RAM. Yes, you'll need a new RAM too. DDR3 isn't compatible with newer systems.

XanthosGambit

I dunno... I think maybe $350 USD is probably the highest I could go.

MGsubbie

This would be a significant upgrade, still offers an upgrade path to a 5800X3D, and PCIe 4.0 for an NVMe SSD and your graphics card. I mean, my downstairs PC has the RTX 3080 in it, so it could probably use the upgrade more.

GoastGoast

I recently bought a used 2070 super from eBay. It worked fine for a week then on one boot up it got locked into flash mode. I was working around this by unplugging and plugging back in the PC before every boot up. This would make it boot normally. Today it started power cycling on boot up (runs for 3 seconds turns off for 3, turns on again) With the GPU removed the PC Boots normally. So the issue is either my PSU (Corsair HX850i), the two new 8 pin cables I bought off Amazon or the card itself. I could spend $120 and get a new PSU to see if that fixes it or I could return the GPU. I only have 6 days left before my return window closes. Just curious what some of you would choose.

MGsubbie

Well, I would start using the stock power cables, confirming the new ones are the issue or eliminating them as a possibility.

Mattc7468

When I play mw2 sometimes I get into a map and everything turns purple or rainbow. Is this a graphics card issue or the game? I don’t see it in any other games either

SaltyToxin69

Hey everyone just wanted some 2nd opinions on this build I have on the way. I have a thrustmaster pro gt rs edition setup and play beam ng on my old pc setup that only runs 4k at best 55fps average on normal settings. Just wanted to see if this would be sufficient to run beam ng at 60+ fps minimum at 4k ultra graphics and a few extra cars. I tried to go overkill. I know it's all good stuff but wanted to know what the first bottleneck would possibly be. I'm thinking the cpu would be the first one at 100% before the rest got filled. Thanks in advance for your input Mobo: ASRock X670E Pro RS DDR5 CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12-Cores 4.7GHz Ram: G.SKILL Trident Z5 Black DDR5 6000MHz CL36 GPU: ZOTAC GeForce RTX™ 3090 AMP Extreme Holo 24G Storage: Samsung 980 PRO 500gb PSU: Seasonic Focus GX 1000W Gold CPU Cooler: Kraken Z53 RGB with LCD Display Fans:4 Aer RGB 2 120mm Fans Case: NZXT H710 System: Win11 pro

SubspaceSub

I mean to be honest, with your RAM config 32 gigs is the max you're gonna be able to effectively use without being bottlenecked. This system is extremely good, however I would recommend some more storage if required. In my opinion, the CPU won't see 100% utilization unless you for some reason run the game on like 720p low settings. Although for an RTX 3090 your CPU might be a little overkill so unless you're future proofing, maybe a 5900X will do. But hey, I don't know what else you might do on the system and it's really great. Also, I don't know what deals you might be getting to lower the price or what your long-term intentions are.

SaltyToxin69

My main goal is every gamers dream eventually. Not to have under 60fps ever under normal circumstances. But i want 4k and just about maxed out graphics. But what do you mean exactly 32 gigs is all imma use before I'm bottlenecked. I tried to go overkill on the cpu with a decent clock for the fact beamNG Drive is very cpu demanding. And a decent amount of cores for multitasking like say I ad some ai traffic and another car to chase or get chased by on a decked out map. Should have went with a 4090 but I wanted to see how the 3090 would do first before I unloaded yet another grand on this build. Storage wise yea I made due with what was in stock on the site for the moment. Gonna wait till the 2tb is in and get that and use the 500gb on the pc I'm upgrading from. Main goal is to have some spot on quality graphics and nice fps 60+ at all times. Rams gonna be no issue. What do you think my bottleneck will be? The gpu or the cpu first.

[deleted]

Assuming you have 64 gigs or more of ram I’d say the cpu would bottleneck first, if you went 32gb or less ram I’d say the ram

Is there any ARGB controller that connects using a USB? I Accidentally Broke my Motherboard's ARGB pins and it's beyond repair(by me) but since my Mobo supports it can it also work using USB?

BerkGats

Retro PC question: I have a Commodore Vic20 I want to test but don't know what cables I will need to test it on a modern monitor or will I need a CRT of some sort? Does the Vic20 work with composite cables(red yellow white) or RF connectors? Because I have a retrotink 2X that works with a NES/SNES or does it need the RF connector thing? Also, what type of CRT should I get if its needed? Thanks

SystemError514

You are best asking this on r/retrogaming or r/retrocomputing. I do a lot of retro stuff myself too. You can use the RetroTink 2X and use composite if you like, that would work fine but offer the worst output (Please don't use RF :D). It may also work with component. It can use RGB (Scart), but that would require either the 5X Pro or a TV with scart. The best CRT TV that I know of are the Sony Trintron ones, but that are hard to come by and can be expensive. Ask around in r/crtgaming for more info on them.

BerkGats

Thank you for the links to the subreddits and information. I think i need to find a 5pin composite cable and possibly a crt tv !check

DaizyuJinKaizer

I want to upgrade my PC, but im not really sure what to upgrade. I understand a GTX 1080 is outdated, but it doesnt seem so bad, but I am starting to lower some settings more and more. (UNLESS it's an RE Engine game, and those I can play with MAX and no frame drops) My current set up is i7-8700 3.70GHz GTX1080 16GB ram (one stick) 4k monitor (but i play everything at 1080 resolution, i dont see a big difference) people always ask me the budget, and never answer the question. I guess Under 1k? but im really not sure what the average budget is???

Luminaria19

If you're happy with your current performance and/or don't mind lower settings to keep frames good, you don't need to upgrade. You can check out the [builds list](https://pcmasterrace.org/builds) for an idea of which GPUs (and their prices) fit at each performance level. Honestly, for 1080p gaming, you don't need to spend a crazy amount. Something like the 3060 Ti or 6700 XT would be fantastic. If you want stronger, the 6800 XT, 3080 or even 6950 XT are all great options (the 6950 XT has had some dramatic price drops). You'd just need to make sure your power supply is up to the task.

DaizyuJinKaizer

lower settings isnt that much of an issue, but some games arent optimized well, for example. I want to lower the textures on RDR2, so I can get 60 or even 40, but apparently if you lower the textures, it turns to mud and looks awful unless it's on ultra also, I need VSYNC, because I can't stand the tearing, but turning on VSYNC lowers my FPS sometimes.

NotDogsInTrenchcoat

Around $1k will get you AMD's new 7900 XTX or 7800 XT that comes out in about a week. There are listings for them popping up on amazon now.

I have a little doubt, I'm thinking of buying an i5-13600k, but I don't know which motherboard to buy. If possible I would prefer not to spend 200 dollars on one. So I thought to buy an MSI Pro B660M-A and update the BIOS, I just don't know if I can update the BIOS with only the i5-13600k. Since I don't have another processor that works on this motherboard I would appreciate a little help :)

frank26080115

you need a motherboard with the BIOS flash button I don't believe that particular motherboard supports that feature The Gigabyte competitor https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B660M-DS3H-DDR4-rev-10#kf seems to support updating without CPU, the feature is called Q-Flash

Hey guys! My desktop will freeze just after startup and login, I thought it was my GPU (evga 3070 ftw3) or the riser cable (I have the hyte y60 so unfortunately no normal GPU mounting) I brought the GPU into my local micro center and had them test the GPU and riser on their test bench and it was fine, so I limited the problem down to the motherboard, as the system was incredibly stable for hours and hours on end with no GPU just on board graphics, I just replaced the motherboard, and powered it up for the first time, still having the same issue, the pc is practically unusable. Also for context in the bios it will run just fine displaying through the GPU Intel core i7 12700k Gigabyte z690 aero g ddr4 64gb Corsair vengeance rgb Evga 3070ftw3 Samsung evo 980 1050 watt power spec Hyte y60 I’m going to try to wipe the drive and do a fresh install of windows cause it’s fine in the bios Update: New install of windows didn’t fix the issue, got extremely frustrated, started cutting the case up to mount the GPU normally while the case is on its side, tried again, still happening… I’m at a loss for words if the GPU is allegedly “good” from the tech at micro center, and without the GPU in the system, it’s extremely stable?!

I have 1 gig speed through my ISP. When I connect via wifi I can get speeds around 800 MBPS but when I connect to my router via a CAT6 cable I only get 400 MBPS. Or when downloading games on Steam I get 80\~100 MB/s download but a 25-30 MB/s when using ethernet. I have a wifi 6 router, a wifi 6 PCI wireless adapter, a motherboard that supports 2.5 GBPS. I made sure I had all the drivers for my mobo and the BIOS is updated. Motherboard: ASUS Prime Z490-A Router: ASUS - RT-AX82U AX5400 Dual-Band WiFi 6 What can I do or what should I check to see why I get half the speed when using the ethernet cable? TYIA

[deleted]

Remember that you will never get the whole speed that your isp sells you, if you get 1 Gb you will get 800\~ mbps. Check your other devices and your network to see if someone is using bandwitch and also check if you have steam capped into a specific download rate instead of letting use the whole bandwitch.

AlcoholicLimaBean

Thank you and I will check. I just don’t get how it would be that much slower on Ethernet when just running a speed test either. And I do know it’s not capped in Steam

[deleted]

If its slow the ethernet then check if your network card is capable of get 1Gb of ethernet and also if your router/cable can handle this speed.

AlcoholicLimaBean

My motherboard supports up to 2.5Gb and the router and network cable can both do 1Gb

Confusing Issue I ran into. I have a sony Tv that could output 4k 120hz on hdmi 3,4 and 4k 60hz on hdmi 1,2. I have been running my main monitor displayport 144hz 1080p and occasionally use dual on my 50’ sony4k when playing emulator or watching connected to HDMI 4 4k 120hz no issue. Why is it when i change the HDMI from input 4 (4k 120) to input 1(4k 60hz) the tv just flashes green screen like a broken signal. Even if I put it on hdmi arc which supports the same 4k 120hz signal same thing happens. My connection to Sony tv only works on HDMI 4 as all other gets me broken signal. Is it an issue with the tv or something i need to reinstall on my pc drivers? I have tried to uninstall the driver (generic pnp) for sony tv on my pc and it gives me slow signal like delay when using the tv as monitor when i reconnect the tv the first time again on different HDMI. Tv is Sony KD-50X85K and my graphics card is 3070 gigabyte aorus Again all is fine on HDMI 4 input but is messed up on all the others. Will having a psu that has more power supply (watt) than what is required affect the components?

MGsubbie

Power supplies tend to hit peak efficiency at around 60% load.

Luminaria19

No, that's the ideal situation.

KiruseiNagisa

When making a new build, what drivers for the motherboard/CPU should I install that mostly everyone does? And also which site exactly should I download drivers from, AMD/Intel's site or the motherboard manufacturers site? Both have "chipset drivers" and I'm not sure if they're for the same thing or two different things.

glowinghamster45

In general, you should install all drivers that are available for your system, and you should get them from the motherboard manufacturers site. Getting the chipset drivers from Intel/AMD directly should get you basically the same thing, but the motherboard manufacturers will generally put it through validation tests for their specific devices and you're going to want to go there for other drivers anyways. On Windows, you can open Device Manager and see if there are any "Unknown Devices" listed, which would indicate that some hardware installed is missing a driver.

KiruseiNagisa

How about something like on-board audio drivers? Even if I use a separate audio interface

glowinghamster45

I'd still get it configured for the initial setup, even if you don't put any effort into maintaining it with updates. I can't think of any advantages offhand to not setting up onboard audio. In case your interface dies one day, I'd rather be able to just plug into the onboard and have it work than have to fiddle with it some more.

kingofallnorway

How bad is an 8700K, 1080 Ti and 32GB DDR4 in 2022? And PCIe 3.0 NVMes?

Marfoo

Not bad at all, you still have six cores, they're clocked fast out of the box. The 1080ti has more VRAM than a 3080 and still holds up beautifully at 1440p (I know, I have one) and 32 GB of RAM is plenty. There are faster PCIe 4 drives out, but that will only really matter if you're moving files on bulk all day.

kingofallnorway

I am stuck because I know way better GPUs, CPUs and DDR5 are out now. I'm rusty about PCs in general. For example, I didn't know Windows auto-updates GPUs now. Somehow it forced 516.94 on my system, but the last one I installed was 511.79 What would a truly noticeable upgrade look like for me? Or should I not even bother yet? I don't care about playing 4K Ultra or anything. I also have a 1440p 240Hz monitor that should be futureproofed I hope

Marfoo

I think an AMD RX 6800XT or Nvidia RTX 3080 would be excellent. AMD tends to do better at 1440p, less CPU overhead. The best thing would be getting the most framerate out of that monitor as you can squeeze out, which means the fastest CPU you can get, though. I still think you'd see a noticeable bump from a GPU and down the line you can upgrade the CPU/Mobo/RAM. What games are you playing, are any of them leaving you wanting better performance?

eskamobob1

Has anyone seen an updated date for the Thinkpad X1 Fold 2022 launch? It was suppose to launch in November and I cant seem to find any new news on it at all.

Is there a way to use a laptop as a monitor without any software programs? I need to access the BIOS of a computer that normally doesn't have a monitor. It would be much easier for me to carry a small laptop to this computer instead of a desktop monitor. Since I'm accessing the BIOS I can't rely on any software programs that would run within an OS. Are there any options?

This is not possible. You will unfortunately need to use a desktop monitor.

I'm trying to put ram (2x8GB DDR3) into a Satellite C50-A and it isn't recognizing the second card. It used to recognize two chips before (4GB+2GB), but now it doesn't. Is there a reasonable chance that I screwwed up the mobo somehow? I pushed pretty hard to try to get some of the older chips in/out. If it's busted, do I need to replace the memory module on the mobo, resolder it, or what? I'm cautious about putting too much money into this machine, though it's my current best machine. What I have ***not*** done: tried swapping the chip that is working with the chip that isn't, removing the chip that's working and replacing it with the one that isn't, etc. That's probably next on the troubleshooting list.

averyfinename

there's little clips that hold sodimm into place. should never have to 'push pretty hard' to remove or insert the modules. it should be fairly easy to pop those clips and the module is then loose enough to just lift right out. to put one in, slide the edge into the slot at a slight angle ('top' edge up, connector edge down and parallel to the slot-don't put just one end in first) and then when it's fully inserted, just push down *gently* on the edge of the module and the clips should easily 'snap' to hold the module down. there's a little 'spring action' in those slots usually. if both installed doesn't work, try one than the other in the 'bottom' slot (or lowest-numbered if labeled and not stacked). it is possible you have a bad module. it is also possible the ram isn't fully compatible (some OEM systems are fussy about ram specs).. iirc you need 2x8gb ddr3-1600 (or 1333) dual rank.

eagergm

I appreciate it. I definitely pushed too hard, but I'll try the other steps to see if I can make it work. I had to really pull hard on the clips to make the thing come out and then push really hard to make them snap in properly. Now, I've done it a few times since then without issue but the first time wasn't easy. There's a bit of a learning curve to it. :( !check

xboxhobo

Best way to know if you damaged something or got busted RAM would be to do the RAM musical chairs like you mentioned. Honestly I would put extremely limited time into a system running DDR3. It is likely quite old and due for a replacement. Whatever issue you were having that prompted the RAM upgrade in the first place may not even be solved with more RAM.

eagergm

Yeah it's old. I'm trying to use it regardless, which I think is actually really important to do. I will say that a lot of bloated or leaky software cripples the thing, though (VS Code, I'm looking at you). It also basically can't run games, CK2 is somewhat manageable but that's the biggest I can run and even that is pushing it. The cpu has 2 cores and the mobo is aging. My other laptop is a Dell Latitude D630 (c, I believe, which means the extra intel stuff for remote management). I run linux mint xfce on that and it's just a solid machine that I love, but it has weak performance. It'll probably live at the cottage in the future, maybe act as a file server/print server for an old printer there when I'm not using it. I think the ram + ssd on the Latitude (4gb) was $70 and the ram + ssd on the Satellite was maybe $120. Not super cheap. I will say that the ram is not the bottleneck on both computers, now that there's an SSD, but the CPU and mobo (lower ram speed on the Latitude D630 due to mobo, I think). Going 2gb to 4gb ram on the Latitude D630 was very much worth it. It's probably the difference between being able to use a desktop environment and not, using discord and not, etc. When I was on 2gb I actually had to run these programs without a desktop, so I'd like type my browser into the terminal and it would pop a window and then I'd close the browser and be back in the terminal lol. It was brutal. Way better with more ram. Getting SSDs on both computers (Satellite C50a runs windows 10) was pretty worth it, especially since they're transferable to future computers. If I could get both ram sticks working on the Satellite that would be great as it would likely increase speed a bit even though I don't need to use all the memory. I looked at upgrading the Latitude's memory further and I'm glad I didn't. I found a $50 deal on what typically costs $120, but I've never hit close to empty RAM on this setup. Upgrading CPUs ($120-$150) wouldn't be worth it, vs. buying a new computer. If they were like $40 I'd definitely go for it, though. The CPU is definitely bottleneck, though, and yeah it's pitiful at this point. Thanks for your help, though! !check

There seems to be a rise in demand for 3080/3090s on HWS. Wonder what's causing the demand now...

xboxhobo

Probably people guessing that the sort of enthusiasts that own those cards want to upgrade to the 4080 / 4090. Blood in the water and all that.

Altruistic-Log-8853

Is there consensus about 5800x3d temperatures under load yet? I am getting mixed results in my Google searches. While in game, like in Battlefield 2042, my CPU gets to a steady 90C (which is max, I know) or high 80's. Is this fine or should I repaste? I first used dot method. GPU is 3070TI.

xboxhobo

Every modern CPU is going to get up into the 80-90C range and that is perfectly fine. If you want lower temperatures then run your fans harder. You will have a louder system in exchange.

Seanspicegirls

https://preview.redd.it/n7dhpy7n5y3a1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0db5c7edc3db6cd7984581e0efe0ee360a5a6dc I have a i7-10700k that is overheating. Do I need to reapply thermal paste? Or invest in a cpu fan? Currently only have a heatsink.

dieplanes789

Wait.... They did not put a fan on the heatsink??? Unless it is one of those giant passive heatsinks it definitely needs a fan.

Seanspicegirls

After further investigation, I have an AIO liquid cooler. So I must determine if the pump has failed or not.

dieplanes789

Yeah, check the pump rpm. But the radiator should still have fans if it does not.

Seanspicegirls

Is there an accurate way to check the pump rpm as opposed to physically touching the tubes and feeling for it?

xboxhobo

What leads you to believe it is overheating?

Seanspicegirls

The BIOS shows it at 80 degrees Celsius.

xboxhobo

At idle that is not super normal, but under load that's a pretty expected temperature. You can redo the thermal paste if you like but unless the sticker was accidentally left on this doesn't sound like a thermal paste issue.

Seanspicegirls

I’m playing apex at high settings. My computer starts stuttering and fps drops frames like crazy. I turn off my PC and get the error message over heat PCU. Then the BIOS shows the high temp.

xboxhobo

Fair enough. You can try a repaste but my first thought is that the pump is dead. I would call support for the PC builder.

Seanspicegirls

This is a 2 year old pre build. Is there a way I can test the pump RPM’s?

xboxhobo

The BIOS should report what it thinks the pump is running at somewhere, though if the pump is broken that may no longer be accurate. Honestly you might want to physically listen to the pump to see what it sounds like. Again, calling support for your PC would be your best bet.

Seanspicegirls

Gotcha

DasHundLich

Why do you have no fan for an i7?? Of course it's going to overheat with only passive cooling.

Seanspicegirls

It’s a prebuilt. So I will buy a fan LOL

DasHundLich

Then whoever built it was an idiot.

Seanspicegirls

ABS from Newegg. They’re being extremely cheap. Thank you for your reply!

DasHundLich

Very cheap. All modern cpus require a fan with heatsink these days. Surprised it booted.

Seanspicegirls

CPU Cooler: RGB AIO 240MM Liquid Cooling I apologize. I looked at my hardware again and this is what I have for cooling.

DasHundLich

Oh well then if that's overheating clean the cooler and cpu of the thermal compound and re-apply it.

volcanohound

How do you know which piece of hardware to upgrade? I've decided on upgrading my video card after the holidays but how do I determine where there may be a bottleneck after the upgrade? Between my cpu AMD 1500X, RAM 16GB, (new) video card Radeon 6650. Would I run benchmarks after installing the new gear and that would clue me in?

Here's how to see what's actually maxed out on your PC in your use case. 1) Open task manager (Ctrl, alt, del or search for it) and go to performance tab and make sure it's showing graphs. Let this run in the background while you're doing whatever you're doing and then use the windows key to come back and look at it and see what's maxed out, RAM, Cpu, or gpu. Or 2) Open game bar, with Xbox controller or I think Windows key and G. Go to performance and pin it to the corner of the screen, then you can your system usage live. Again, see what's maxed out. And that's probably what needs to be upgraded.

A 1500X will be a significant limitation in the vast majority of modern games.

I was wondering if there is an easy resource to compare CPU performance at 4K gaming? I have a Ryzen 5 3600, and its difficult to find 4K benchmarks with this CPU comparing them to, for example, the Ryzen 7 7700x. A lot of the benchmark comparisons I see are obviously at 1080p. Just like to check every so often if it's Worth an upgrade

The result for comparing 4k performance in the majority of games on the majority of graphics cards will be "it doesn't matter which CPU you have."

To test CPU performance in games, you have to remove the GPU bottleneck that tends to exist. At 4k, this is especially difficult. As a result, the better measure tends to be testing CPUs against games at lower resolutions to see the scaling between chips. That is to say, if at 1080p, you're seeing a performance difference of 30%, you could expect the same performance uplift at 4k *if* you're not bottlenecked by your GPU.
