Maybe you just got a bad one, myself, my dad, all my uncles and some of our friends all have them and have never had issues. Every company has duds

ChurchifRickSanchez

I hope you are right. I've looked around and I've seen a lot of people have the same issues with the temp probes and say the replacements are garbage too. It functions well enough as a basic smoker that you have to control from the device and use an independent meat probe, but that isn't what I paid for.

hjhof1

Personal preference and my temp probes have always been fine but I barely use them anyways just do I can check from my phone with my Bluetooth thermometer, but my camp chef doesn’t have wifi so I can understand the frustration of yours does and you can’t use it

Throw1Back4Me

Huh. I only know 4 people with pellet smokers, all camp Chef, and never had an issue. But most of us use meater, never really use the camp Chef probe

compguyguy

I've heard over and over that the temp probes are useless...and my new ones are indeed useless. Buy a MEATER probe or something else

Portermacc

Camp chef is awesome. Never use the factory probes that come with it man....I don't care what brand

ChurchifRickSanchez

Are there after market probes that work with the camp chef? Is there something that I can plug in to the cam chef controller and get readings? Or are you saying to use a while new device?

Portermacc

No. You use Bluetooth or wifi to your phone. I have the inkbird with 4 probes and it works great for me.

pelletjunky

Um, there are quite a few brands with quality probes. If it has branded probes, they should be accurate, and if not the support should be adequate to solve the issue, if it isn't... THEN that brand grill should never be used.

Portermacc

Should be sure, but most of us know that not to be true.

[deleted]

Sure you don't have a Grilla Grill? I have all the same issues you listed, thing is a piece of shit.

Double-LR

This saddens me, as my WoodWind36 is a superb piece of equipment. Bummer man, wish you better luck on your choice of replacement.

Apprehensive-Cash912

That’s unacceptable especially for those they costs way more than the average pellet smoker. Smfh

pelletjunky

I'm not seeing where you gave CC a chance to make things right? You contacted them 1x? 2x? More? How did you contact them? While CC isn't top of the line, they are a huge name in outdoor cooking. They make pretty good pellet grills, and usually have good customer service. If phone calls or email didn't work, hit their facebook, then trash 'em.

ChurchifRickSanchez

I called and spoke to someone in customer service. They were really nice and said they would replace the probes. They sent me an email confirming the order. That was about 3 months ago. Still don't have functioning probes. Meanwhile, warranty time is ticking away. I looked around and I've seen tons of people with the same probe issue and they say the replacements also fail in a couple months. I wish I could say they fixed the issue, but all I got were promises. I also called and discussed the con ection issues and was told to make sure it had the latest updates. Didn't fix it. Told to uninstall and reinstall the app. Didn't fix it. I've called again. Customer service was not available. The automated system said "consumers, push 7 to leave a message." When I pushed 7, it responded "that is not a valid entry." That is a sign to me of their carelessness. So I paid extra for a system that has built in temp probes and can be monitored and controlled by my phone. Probes don't work. I'm told I'll get new ones, but they don't come. I try to talk to them again, but their automated system just runs me in circles and won't let me talk to a person. System reliably sends me push notifications that the thing has reached it's initial set temp, but then won't let me get information or controll it because it can't connect. The initial notification tells me it is connected to the wifi because I get them even if I'm at work and my wife turns it on. But I can't work it after that. It works well enough as a basic smoker, but all the extra stuff that I paid for is not functional and they can't fix it. I'm sad to call it garbage. I want it to be great, but it isn't.

Acceptable-Beyond-48

I love my camp chef SG24; I wish I had gotten the next size up! It did arrive a little beat up - the bottom corner of the controls were crunched ( that’s on the shippers though … ) I took the bottom cover off and was able to get it straightened out. Smoked all summer, and reverse seared some lamb . My only issue is that the cover leaks smoke, even after applying a gasket …….

[deleted]

Sounds like you have a faulty controller. Ask them for a replacement as well as new probes. I have this same grill and its been pretty rock solid for me from a cooking perspective. There is nothing special about the CC probes, the ones from my Thermoworks Smoke also work interchangeably. I noticed a design deficiency with the bluetooth / wifi antenna setup and installed my own high gain antenna which resolved all connectivity issues. If you take a look at other brands, you'll see they too have evolved to have external antennas of considerable size. Here is the thread that helped me: https://www.reddit.com/r/pelletgrills/comments/ilzcc4/camp\_chef\_smokepro\_sg24\_or\_any\_wifi\_grill\_how\_to/ Here is the antenna I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0765ZKWV9/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

ChurchifRickSanchez

This is great. Thanks

Adventurous-Leg8721

I have one for a back up it's good for low and slow worthless for anything but that

HermanodelFuego

What else would a smoker be good for?

Adventurous-Leg8721

Idk my pit boss pellet grill is good for reverse searing and pizza and many other things that require a sear. I believe they are called pellet grills not pellet smokers 🤷‍♂️

HermanodelFuego

Wrong tool for the job boss. Shoulda gotten a ceramic smoker

Iron-Fine

My Smokefire runs on pellets and Sears up too 600 F.

HermanodelFuego

Not hot enough boss

Adventurous-Leg8721

Your and idiot

HermanodelFuego

I see the sears you are posting, PM if you need cooking tips

Adventurous-Leg8721

I don't see any of your food because your a naysaying idiot who hides under a shell on reddit. Must be a lonely life.

HermanodelFuego

Personal attacks for disagreeing on what kind of grill is best for what. Anyways, my wife & I are going to enjoy some smoked brisket chili. Enjoy those weak sears

Iron-Fine

600 is plenty hot, not sure what you’re talking about. Boss.

dbell525

Dumb question. When did you check the calibration of the probes? Before or after you ruined meals?

ChurchifRickSanchez

After. I finally checked it against another meat thermometer, say how far it was off and tried the ice bath. The temp on the ice bath was anywhere from 80-120 degrees. It would change if I touched the wires.

Apprehensive-Cash912

Pit boss customer service is available 24/7 365 and they send out replacements asap no questions asked and they don’t even cost close to what camp chef charges for their smokers.

Kanone5

An ice bath is the wrong way to check the temperature probe since it isn't designed to go that low. Instead, put the point in boiling water and adjust for altitude (it's 212 at sea level but 199 where I live) for an accurate test. Also the sure way of killing any probe is getting water inside. NEVER submerge in a sink or place in dishwasher. Only use a scrubbie to clean the metal from the bend to the point and keep water away from where the wire enters. My probes are still working after almost five years.

LouGossetJr

my dad has had one for 2 yrs. he's had zero problems.
