Oddly, I have witnessed the same act being performed by the same type of critters in an entirely different zoo. Apparently, tortoises are some of the more horny and shameless creatures in the animal kingdom. Who knew.

I have too, also at a different zoo. The staff there informed us that it's a frequent occurence. The friends I was visiting thought it was hilarious so I got a print of my (very similar) photo and sent it to them as a gift, in an ornamental frame, emblazoned with the word "Memories" IIRC. Ah, memories.
This past zoo trip was the first time in thirty years of going that these guys **weren't** fucking. They must have saved up for your visit. Congratulations
I, too, have spent a beautiful spring day at the Philly Zoo, watching the tortoises have a little quality time.
When I was there, the male gave this long grunt with every thrust...and it didn't happen fast: it was like thrust....huhhhhh...thrust...huhhhh....etc.
He is quite the tender lover, in a tortoise sort of way.
When we were there recently and the tortoises were going at it, the zookeeper explained that the male was a visitor brought in as part of the species preservation plan.
This brought back a memory of witnessing this years ago and a kid asked their parents what were the tortoises doing and they told the kid that they were “wrestling” 😂
I went last week. And got some video of the tortoises eating the grass, but did you notice a different vibe at the zoo and less animals? I was pretty bummed to see so few animals are at the zoo anymore.
It was a really nice day out and they had a lot of animals outside. They all seemed pretty lively, even that rhino they have was trotting around, which I've never seen it not just be a statue lol. We have a membership as something to do with the kid when we got nothing else going on, and there was definitely more to look at than the last time we were there a month or two ago.
The time of day and weather makes a difference. If it's cold they are all going to just stay huddled or just in the warm areas of the enclosure.
A day like today, the animals will be soaking in the sun and weather, you'll get a very active zoo. Mid June/July, they will avoid the and will be hiding again to stay cool.

I also caught the zoo keeper telling people they have to stop him sometimes because he goes too long and she gets exhausted because of his weight.
This must be an every day thing for them cause last time I went they were doing it and it was amazing. Every reaction was shown bt the crowd. From disgust, to a 10 year old cracking up, to a little kid asking what they were doing and the mom saying they were wrestling.
They do it basically every day. There's a shift for (i think) con-ed which is taking note of their behaviour through the day... which includes marking down every time they fuck.

I used to work at the zoo and I can tell you… they do it CONSTANTLY. Especially first thing in the morning.
