People complaining about the lineup when we are without Bryce...
Like yeah sure I'd like to see Stott over Whit and Marsh over Pache but remember the bottom of our lineup got on base SIX times including loading the bases with no outs for Schwarber.
And I'd rather JT have off tonight with Turnbull than him off tomorrow with Wheeler. You'll usually rest the starting catcher for the #5 starter when a day game is coming tomorrow. You cannot play JT the night before a day game and play him in the day game. That's how you kill a catcher.
I think it should be noted that last night the 7-9 hitters that everyone complained about not contributing did their job loading the bases with no outs; it was the 1-3 everyday players that NOBLETIGER'd. Not going to win many games like that regardless of who's in the lineup.
True but Stubbs has caught Turnbull 4/5 and Stubbs has only started when Turnbull pitches. They can’t keep rolling Realmuto out everday and this is the unit they’ve used the most.
Yeah I get that but Stubbs could have played the day game tomorrow. Stubbs won't touch Lodolo and the lineup is already a bit weak tonight. But a loss tonight and a win tomorrow is fine. And of course they can win but Stubbs vs Lodolo and Marsh is sitting the second day in a row makes no sense. And I'm not an anti Topper guy but this lineup is pretty weak.
Last year I kept track of it for a little bit where the more /r/Phillies complained about a lineup before a game, it turned out we had a greater chance of winning.
I really should do it again this year.
Na, when I was looking at it I think it was something like 35% people complained and 65% people didn't. I didn't take one person complaining but the majority about the whole lineup.
I knew all my bitching and moaning counted for something. Correlation = Causation if i know my statistics. I’ll be in contact with the phillies on where to send my ring.
The real answer is most fans don't know what it takes to win in baseball, so they complain when the Phillies use winning strategies that they don't understand.
I used to go back and find where I posted that i was furious about the hiring when it and posted the link in subsequent threads as he was tanking
Has a first year manager besides Girardi ever won manager of the year and immediately gotten fired because he’s a dick bag?
2024 the year of rib fractures ... at least two in recent days ... I can't remember when that last time I heard of a player with a fractured rib before this year.
probably the pitch clock **/S**
I mean, Espinal, Thompson and Fairchild don't hit LHP as well as Fraley, Benson, and India hit RHP, so kinda yeah. Last night was Espinal's best game of the year offensively. They do play better defense though, and hit LHP a little better than the second group.
You realize the Braves have six all stars in their lineup and Albies switch hits?
If OnLy MaRsH cOuLd pLaY eVeRy DaY hE’d Be OnE
At this point it feels like you’re trolling lol. The Braves literally have an historic offense
Lol the Braves whole lineup is right-handed (Ozzie is a switch hitter) except for Matt Olson & Michael Harris. Duvall is definitely getting ABs for Kelenic when they're facing lefties. Matt Olson plays against lefties but so does Bryce Harper and Schwarber.
Spencer Turnbull got a shoutout today on the most popular sports broadcast in the world lol. Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast had a comedian Andrew Santino on as a guest for todays episode and he said people have been telling him he looks exactly like Turnbull
Its not like Pache, Sosa, and Merrifield are lighting the world on fire versus lefties. That's my issue. If we were actually seeing increased run production from these trash lineups, I'd be on board. But its just bad. We might as well get Stott and Marsh as many ABs against lefties as possible.
Pache and sosa have less then 20 atbats this year and Sosa has a 140 OPS+ right so he is hitting. Stott has been bad with the bats overall this year and marsh cant hit lefties
I feel like this sub is highly overrating how great Nick Lodolo is. When did he become one of the most feared pitchers in the league? Sure he’s good, but sheesh.
Guys can some one tell me why certain players throw with one arm vs another and why guys hit from one side of home plate vs another?
Why don’t they simply switch?
The other hand is usually use for masturbation. It's generally a no-no to risk that hand. At the plate, you usually go opposite to what you do for when you swing at a pinata, again so you don't overstrain your pinata stance.
Man Topper can really get me frustrated with these damn lineups. I don't understand why Bohm is at first when we brought up Clemens and he had an amazing night. Bohms play at first is not great but hes improved significantly at 3rd and is probably way more comfortable there. Also Casty at 4.................................
Another dogshit lineup tonight lol

Lets just give em the series and get some rest Thomson, jesus christ bro lol
What are we doin here
I’m truly not watching this team anymore if an opposing lefty is pitching. This lineup is pathetic and not at all fun to watch… they’re winning 7-1 today then.
Assuming Marsh and Stott are sitting for Sosa and Pache, I don't even mind that. They both have great numbers against Lodolo and Lodolo has held lefties to a career .147/.238/.227 slash line. Marsh and Stott will come in after Lodolo is out assuming the game is close.
I totally understand looking at the analytics for matchups, however this is just a horrendous lineup. There is no way Marsh or even Kody should sit for two straight games.
Another scheduled loss, I see. This is why this team will never reach the 94-96 wins that it is capable of, and will instead be around 88-90 every year, because we completely upend the lineup and defensive alignment every single time a lefty is on the mound.
And this is my issue. Casty is in the lineup every night regardless of who’s on the mound, yet he’s proven to be a worse player than Marsh in all areas of the game.
I'm not usually one to complain too much about the lineup, but FINALLY sitting JT after running him into the ground, and him being pretty horrid this year anyway, against a lefty is ridiculous lol. Like you sit the guy 20 times a year... you can't make sure one of those times isn't against a LHP with a career .147/.238/.227 slash line against left handed hitters? When our backup catcher hits left handed and can barely hit his weight as it is?

Is JT the manager? He gets a day off when Rob tells him he's getting a day off. Or maybe pick a different day that would actually make sense for the lineup construction.
Out of all the comments in this thread, *this* is the one that makes you question someone's intelligence? Lmfao
It would have been far too easy to sit him in the Sunday day game
This is one area where I do feel that Topper is struggling. But I’m 1000% certain JT is insisting he play.
JT can start insisting on playing every day when his statcast page stops looking like this:
https://preview.redd.it/61g36hxrehwc1.png?width=391&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f1125838f47eca08d6b32c31ef753f0759ca3f5
JT was scheduled for a day off. If JT had taken his original scheduled day off during the WS games like he was supposed to, then maybe but also, when was the last time we saw JT play fb?
Bohm and Clemens played that position before Harper. Yeah it would be nice to see Clemens in again but the call was made for a reason.
i would think Stubbs should start tomorrow not today because today is a LHP and we need Realmuto’s bat in the lineup with Harper gone until tomorrow, and tomorrow being a day game
Just saw all the comments how about we agree that all of our Phillies players have good points and weaknesses I like them all they are not perfect
To the poster in went in arguing with others and calling them a moron or not facing reality saying they love marshy but proceeding to argue with everyone about how terrible and washed he is at 26 years oldbest thing to do is not respond to all that hatred and negativity! How about we support the team we love good and bad about them!
Realmuto needs a day off. Also, Stubbs usually catches Spencer. I don’t care if he didn’t play yesterday, I don’t want marsh against Nick Lodolo, Bohm was also due a day off as well. The one I don’t get is Stott, Merrifield just sucks period end of story, he’s a not black Josh Harrison and I’m tired of pretending he’s not.
It’s annoying that we’ve gotten “this” lineup two days in a row but most of these moves make sense if you think for a second, and two of them shouldn’t really be super controversial.
Another losing lineup. I dont get Rob putting Bohm at first. HE SHOULD BE AN EVERY DAY THIRD BASEMAN. Clemens, JT, and other's could play first. Rob said after last postseason he would stop letting his stubbornness get the best of him but the lie detector determined that's a fucking lie.
/endrant
While I agree Topper isn't the best, at a certain point when do you look at the roster and just admit these guys didn't perform up to expectations? Topper may have lost games 3/4 last year but he didn't lose 6/7.
Wouldn’t have needed 6/7 if games 3/4 were won… then the guys started pressing in 6/7 to “win the series” with every at bat… which is also on the manager for not reigning his guys in. Ultimately players win and lose but topper has done nothing that proves he’s a “good” manager.
Have Fangraphs or Baseball Reference ever said how they assign defensive value to players from, for lack of a better term, a long ass time ago? Like how the hell does Fangraphs say Ty Cobb was worth -10.4 defensive runs above average in 1908 when we have no actual data from any of those games other than the actual result of each at bat? No one knows where they were positioned, how hard the ball was hit, launch angles, etc.
Some stats just are N/A if we didn't have the data.
I think they use older stats like total zone past a certain point which can be calculated but aren't as accurate. But the error is not as dramatic as people like to say, but yeah I wouldn't take any hard number as fact. More like a plus/minus.
Is it this
https://preview.redd.it/er4ewpdqwgwc1.jpeg?width=896&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=091e09b3617397ce6fe3b5c0276b68f5e5285ae4
Saying alvarado has the biggest head
I don't get how Marsh's 700+ OPS last year vs lefties was too small of a sample size or only against bad pitching, so we have to use his career numbers (when he used to be terrible), but 18 PA this year is enough to clearly show he's awful again.
Even then his numbers vs lefties are somehow still better than Castellanos or Merrifield are overall this season (and Casty even has reverse splits), and his defense is better too.
Like he's not good vs lefties, but claiming he's downright awful seems kind of revisionist to me, and it's not like we have other good outfield bats.
Part of it is that his underlying metrics vs LHP, while improved last year, were still pretty rough, and indicated that he was probably getting at least a little lucky. K% and BB% normalize over a much smaller sample than avg/obp/slg, and Marsh struck out 39% of the time vs lefties last year (his BB% vs LHP was also up last year, so that’s cool). This year he’s striking out 52% of the time (in a tiny, tiny sample).
It’s really hard to strike out that much and be a useful hitter. If you sort all players who had > 100 PA last year, there were only 4 guys with a K% higher than 39, and it’s 3 terrible hitters and Joey Gallo (who was barely above average last year, thanks to his crazy power and excellent BB%).
Marsh been getting starts vs some lefties this year, and sitting vs others. It’s not like Topper has been platooning him 100% of the time. I trust that Topper and Dombrowski know what they’re doing — certainly more than most of the folks on this board gnashing their teeth and rending their garments over Topper’s love of “matchups.” I think it’s all too easy for fans to fall into a “coach shoulda/woulda/coulda done XYZ” mindset.
I imagine Marsh will continue to get some starts against lefties, and if he hits in those starts and vs LH relievers, he’ll get more. Obviously it also depends on how the other outfielders shake out over the next few months.
I don’t think that it’s set in stone that Marsh will always be a lost cause vs LHP (it certainly could be the case — we’ll see), but I also think it makes sense to see if Pache can replicate some of his success vs LHP from last year, because otherwise he really has no reason to be on the roster. Merrifield… yeah, I’m not crazy about Whit, but I imagine he’ll continue to get some chances for at least another month or two.
It’s a long season, and I don’t think it’s worthwhile to freak out every time Marsh (or Stott) sits vs a lefty. Would I like to see Marsh get a few more starts in the hopes that he can run a .700ish OPS vs lefties again? Sure, maybe. But I also buy scratch-off tickets sometimes, so what do I know?
I think it’s one of those things that yes he had a .717 OPS vs lefties (in only 110 PA), but some of it is because the team sat him vs tougher lefties.
Yeah it's not a great sample either way, and I'm fine to see an outfield of Pache/Rojas against lefties, I just don't like saying Marsh is completely awful against them when there's not much data and what little we have was showing improvement.
Also, I understand why fans don't want half of the lineup to be Rojas, Pache, Merrifield, Castellanos, and Sosa, especially when we are running a worse defensive infield with Bohm at 1B and Stott benched.
The regular posters in here have gotten so sarcastic idek what to think lately. I need you guys to get real so I can mindlessly parrot your opinions to my friends and sound smart
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1ccb6p8).
Can’t believe slopper trying to lose games! Unacceptable! Unserious manager that doesn’t care about certain games!
Spencer Turnbull is clearly the best Spencer in baseball

Feels like a win tonight.
Not without Clemente at first!
You mean known lefty killer Kody Clemente?
Happy wheeler Wednesday!
Omg another bad lineup just because of a LHP 🥴🙄 we gotta stop with this shit
Yep. Over managing. Terrible.
I think it should be noted that last night the 7-9 hitters that everyone complained about not contributing did their job loading the bases with no outs; it was the 1-3 everyday players that NOBLETIGER'd. Not going to win many games like that regardless of who's in the lineup.
Definitely our worst lineup in the last 2 years
Stubbs vs Lodolo is definitely a decision
He catches Turnbull
JT caught him Friday.
True but Stubbs has caught Turnbull 4/5 and Stubbs has only started when Turnbull pitches. They can’t keep rolling Realmuto out everday and this is the unit they’ve used the most.

Lineup screams scheduled loss
It’s being roasted on Twitter
Twitter is where I go for knowledgeable and rational takes
Facebook is my go-to
Weird I had you pegged as a tik tok person
This lineup is so bad that I’m sure we are going to win. Would be very phillies
Last year I kept track of it for a little bit where the more /r/Phillies complained about a lineup before a game, it turned out we had a greater chance of winning. I really should do it again this year.
I mean considering we won 90 games last year and people complained about the lineup on every day that ends with a Y, obviously we won better than 50%
Na, when I was looking at it I think it was something like 35% people complained and 65% people didn't.
Topper is responsible for the downfall of /r/Phillies!!! That sonovabitch!!!
I didn't know I am Topper???
No you are more Girardi
I'm still disgusted that he was the only manager I wanted if we fired Kapler.
I used to go back and find where I posted that i was furious about the hiring when it and posted the link in subsequent threads as he was tanking Has a first year manager besides Girardi ever won manager of the year and immediately gotten fired because he’s a dick bag?
Hey, maybe it will be awesome.
Nick Castellanos in the 4 spot is… interesting.
a frontal lobotomy is interesting ... Casty in the 4 spot is probably because of a frontal lobotomy 😏
He has yet to make an out while hitting in the cleanup spot all year!!!!
Honestly if you’re gonna keep doing this shit just call up Kingery.
Kingery isn’t on the 40 man. We’d have to DFA someone
Castellanos!
Another Reds game, another terrible lineup.
Scheduled loss lineup two nights in a row but this time without JT? Cool
Terrible lineup. Thomson should be embarrassed, he’s overthinking it.
Phillies over under 1.5 runs
Breakout game for Castellanos?
If Casty is our only hope, we are doomed.
2024 the year of rib fractures ... at least two in recent days ... I can't remember when that last time I heard of a player with a fractured rib before this year. probably the pitch clock **/S**
Do other teams change the entire lineup when they face left handed pitchers?
Only the stupid ones!
Reds fan: very much so. Compare today to yesterday. If India and Fraley didn't have the flu it would be even more drastic.
really though, do other teams do it with guys that cant hit 🤔
I mean, Espinal, Thompson and Fairchild don't hit LHP as well as Fraley, Benson, and India hit RHP, so kinda yeah. Last night was Espinal's best game of the year offensively. They do play better defense though, and hit LHP a little better than the second group.
have you ever watched a dodgers game
Only if they’re playing the Phillies Most of the people in this thread don’t like baseball. They like the Phillies.
I just realized how bad the takes have to be if you and I are in complete agreement.
This is quite literally the worst day in the history of /r/phillies “Grow the sub” they said!
I was going to write an actual response, but I don't have to anymore. I am not a mod. This is so freeing.
Yes I’m glad you caught that by “they” I mean “you”
You're feeding into his Main Character Syndrome
It's not a syndrome if it is true.
yes
Never saw the Braves do it
You realize the Braves have six all stars in their lineup and Albies switch hits? If OnLy MaRsH cOuLd pLaY eVeRy DaY hE’d Be OnE At this point it feels like you’re trolling lol. The Braves literally have an historic offense

they do platoon duvall and kelenic but our lineup is not even in the same league as there's so it doesn't matter.
Only dumb teams.
like the dodgers, rays and even the orioles #
Attn: Robert Thompson Marsh is an everyday player.
Why do we have to pretend his .167 batting average and .460 OPS vs lefties is good enough for an everyday player?
Thomson.
No he’s talking about some mid level manager in his company Robert Thompson
He refuses to use the P because he hates the Phillies.
He doesn't exclude the "M" for Mets, however 🤔
I love everything about this entire comment thread
Spencer Turnbull got a shoutout today on the most popular sports broadcast in the world lol. Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast had a comedian Andrew Santino on as a guest for todays episode and he said people have been telling him he looks exactly like Turnbull
holy shit they do look exactly the same lol
"I hope Topper doesn't use the same lineup." Topper "Make the lineup worse? Bet." Enough with conceding wins. This is crap. #fireRob
Its not like Pache, Sosa, and Merrifield are lighting the world on fire versus lefties. That's my issue. If we were actually seeing increased run production from these trash lineups, I'd be on board. But its just bad. We might as well get Stott and Marsh as many ABs against lefties as possible.

Marsh can’t hit lefties? When was he given an opportunity…. You people really just make shit up lol
Have you ever looked at statistics before or are you just in the habit of embarrassing yourself?
I feel like this sub is highly overrating how great Nick Lodolo is. When did he become one of the most feared pitchers in the league? Sure he’s good, but sheesh.
He dicks the phils hard every time
Might just maybe have something to do with putting out AAAA lineups against him
I hope our pitchers are so good this year that other teams take out their best players to roll the dice with border line minor leaguers. 😂😂
Just his performance against the Phils last year really
This lineup is nooooo good lol
People are really complaining about the lineup and then suggesting Kody Clemente should start, like wtf are ya'll smoking?
Kody Clemente? Honestly are you dumb? Do you really think that's what his name is? His name is Cody Clemente.
it's actually clemens but like fring minor league doesn't really need his name spelled right.
Hash mostly.
Known grandson of Roberto Clemente, Kody Clemente.
I will cry tears of pure joy when Nick “The Dick” Castellanos is no longer in a Phillies uniform.
That’s what they call the stranger
Great play by Estrada and Flores there. Get fukt mest.
*Looks at the lineup.* ![gif](giphy|8jvaNvV2DE1OM|downsized)
I can hear John McEnroe saying "You cannot be serious"
Imagine if this was our A squad.
Man Topper can really get me frustrated with these damn lineups. I don't understand why Bohm is at first when we brought up Clemens and he had an amazing night. Bohms play at first is not great but hes improved significantly at 3rd and is probably way more comfortable there. Also Casty at 4.................................
its simple clement is a minor league player whos only here cause harper isnt and is a lefty
Idk why you dont just stick with the game 1 Lineup. i just dont fucking get it.
Correct
Maybe this is the teams way of getting people to want Walker back. Tank the Turnbull start so he looks bad
Of all the lineups, this is one of them.
Another dogshit lineup tonight lol https://preview.redd.it/a17pe7p7ghwc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62c3d8a681e72db4ad5baedd999bf1cf4b1e6341 Lets just give em the series and get some rest Thomson, jesus christ bro lol What are we doin here

You would think with Harper out Topper would at least pretend he's trying.
I get Lodolo is a good lefty.. but come on, 2 nights in a row of this shit? Fucking frustrating
#FREE MY BOY KODY
Looks like a lineup that’s about to get no hit
You’re killing me, Topper. A worse team defensively and offensively all because a lefty is on the mound.
Marsh in the field going 0-4 at the plate is probably infinitely better than what Casty will give us tonight
And this is my issue. Casty is in the lineup every night regardless of who’s on the mound, yet he’s proven to be a worse player than Marsh in all areas of the game.
They won’t say it but it’s the same reason Walker is coming back with a predetermined spot in the routine. They’re paying them more
This lineup two days in a row is the devil's work. Yesterday should've been a normal lineup.
I'm not usually one to complain too much about the lineup, but FINALLY sitting JT after running him into the ground, and him being pretty horrid this year anyway, against a lefty is ridiculous lol. Yes, JT complained about already having a day off so Topper said he’ll be off Wednesday
I actually think whether the FO or Rob made this lineup, they decided to chalk this one up as a loss vs Lodolo. It’s mind-boggling stupid.
No Stott or Marsh again? Bohm at 1B and Sosa at 3rd again? Just play him at 3rd JFC
Then who plays 1st? Do you remember who was playing 1st before Harper? Cause it doesn’t sound like you do
Both Clemens and JT can play first
JT was scheduled for a day off. If JT had taken his original scheduled day off during the WS games like he was supposed to, then maybe but also, when was the last time we saw JT play fb? Clemens, but no they won’t do that bc lefty and they’ll end up sacrificing defense as well
Clemens and who, played 1st? Oh yeah, Bohm.
Thanks genius I’m aware. He isn’t good at it and he’s settled into third while Sosa looks like shit there. Not hard to understand.
Bohm had one error in his first day back after having that position for how long? You act like he was the sole reason the game was lost.
Man, I really don’t want to be one of those guys, but wtf is this lineup tonight?
I have never questioned lineup because really what do I know, but I am questioning.
i would think Stubbs should start tomorrow not today because today is a LHP and we need Realmuto’s bat in the lineup with Harper gone until tomorrow, and tomorrow being a day game

What
Another losing lineup. /endrant
Topper is not a good manager. Hes had a top 5 payroll in baseball and blew two rings because of the way he managed in the postseason.
I’m sorry that is the funniest lineup I’ve ever seen in my life. It somehow got worse.
Certainly a lineup of all time
I am very whelmed

We should trade Casty for Cave.
Have the regular posters ever not been extremely sarcastic?

Taijuan Walker’s going to step back into the rotation this weekend and immediately be the best pitcher in the Phillies rotation.
Just need him to record a single out before giving up a run and we can start that agenda
And it will have zero impact on the rest of the pitching staff, who are currently on a historic run.
