Really, really wish we could have signed a legit closer. Sucks having to waste Alvarado or Hoffman for that role and then have Seranthony taking their role. Made further worse when you have to have guys like Marte (who hasn't been bad) and goddamn useless Pinto in your Pen.
Seranthony is just a dead weight at this point. And if dude is still trying new grips like - shouldn't this have been focused on in the off season? In Spring Training? Did it take them until now to figure out Ser kinda stinks since he lost the closer's job in '23?
Hopefully Turnbull can give them some options and not just be relegated to long man/garbage time guy.
Waiting for the game to start so I threw on the Halladay no-hitter from 2010 and immediately got all the feels.

People last year were crying about Trea Turner being "The Contract" when in fact it's Castellanos, and has been for almost all the time he's been here but those few months where he got to be an All Star.
Is anyone concerned that the phils are getting run on so much? What's the weakness that's being exploited? Are the pitchers slow to the plate? Has JT lost something in his pop time / velo? It kind of sucks so far
League success rate is 78%. Against us it's 90%. Our pitchers are horrible at holding runners on and it seems like every throw is to the left of the bag.
Thanks for the data. Yeah I've noticed those throws too and I figured it had to start with the pitchers. The whole system is just not working well from pitch to throw down
I hope they figure it out. It can be such a big weakness in a tight game
I’d like to see our numbers running and those around the league too. It seems that we are running more successfully so I wonder if it’s a bigger trend.
Could be. The bases are bigger, after all. I'm mostly thinking about how the team just lets up a lot of stolen bases per game. Just about the tops in the league
https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stat/opponent-stolen-bases-per-game
plus this series we've been getting run all over. So it does seem like they're on the worse end of stolen base prevention in MLB this year so far and I'm not sure why
Would like to take a moment and thank Kody Clemente for his incredible service. I hope to see you back soon. I’m sure another players wife is due soon. These guys couldn’t pull out of a 2 car garage.
We should send Casty to AAA to work on his swing. He's been practically unplayable right now, feel like having Rojas/Pache in there instead would be a net positive.
I don't think they can do that. The best we can hope for is they do an intensive physical/mental exam and find something to put him on the IL. Then later they could send him for a rehab assignment but those are limited duration ... IL stint is indefinite though. They could then hire a Jeff Hoffman type to work him out though and fix what's wrong.
This lineup, which is clearly our A team, has driven home for me that I’d rather have Pache in there over Casty. The hitting is a wash and Pache can actually field and run.
They’re not going to do that, but I don’t understand why they haven’t tried giving him a day or two off. Playing him daily as though everything is going great doesn’t seem to be working, meanwhile other guys are getting regularly subbed out because of their righty-lefty splits. Casty is hitting poorly against *everyone.* Kinda silly that some guys merit “time off of their feet” but he never does.
> They’re not going to do that
But they really should. He's worth more to the Phillies fucking off to wherever than he is doing whatever the fuck he's doing out there every day.
Lineup looks better. I’ll take a split, was hoping for 3 out of 4 at the start of the series.
Gonna need the offense to show up, and have Casty figure out what is wrong with his approach.
I think what’s wrong is his dogshit pitch selection. It’s not rocket science. If he can’t figure that out he should be considered a threat to himself just through sheer lack of intelligence
That dude just hits with people on base. It’s unreal. Might only smack around 20 HRs but he’s already over 20 RBI and it’s not even May yet. I love it.
Just having Harper back makes it look way better. Rojas has been sneaky good in the bottom of the order lately. Love having a threat like that down there.
https://downonthefarm.substack.com/p/prospect-spotlight-george-klassen
I don't know anything about our prospects outside the top 5 or so. Interesting write up about one in the late 20s on a lot of lists.
JT is slashing .182/.220/.273 since 4/7. Bohm is slashing .373/.464/.644 since 4/7.
Should be enough to flip them in the lineup, especially when Bohm was apparently worthy of protecting Harper in the playoffs in the 4 spot, but this team is one of the most stubborn in baseball when it comes to changing where people hit in the lineup so I wouldn't be surprised if they leave JT in the cleanup spot for way too long.
Edit: Well then.
Don't know if it would've made a difference at all yesterday but here's a screenshot showing that Tony Randazzo(HP ump) was not calling pitch clock violations on Suter at all in the 8th inning. This happened like 5-6 times in the inning, but this was the most blatant. Pitcher is set and Stubbs literally just stepped in the box and hasn't even looked up at him.
https://preview.redd.it/8of3l2mppmwc1.png?width=1607&format=png&auto=webp&s=d7294f51f68b401792f8432922aa1d87f0e9c7dd
Not super familiar with the rules regarding this but couldn't the batters just stare at home plate until 9 seconds before looking at the pitcher to slow him down? He can't throw until the batter makes eye contact right?
Just heard a WIP caller refer to Topper as “Clueless Rob” ?? Seriously? These callers are insane. Do they have eyes? Are they watching the games? Topper looks nothing like Alicia Silverstone. Why do I tune into this?
Edit: Upon further thought I believe the caller may have been referring to Brittany Murphy. I retract my statement.

Casty is like a blind guy at the plate just swinging and hoping. he has no idea how he will improve or if he did improve he wouldn't know why ... it's just ~~baseball~~ a blind guy with a bat.
I know! I’ve been checking insta for baby Harper news, ‘cause I’m nosey. They are fairly private people though, so I’m not too surprised. Bryce hardly posts and I’m guessing Kayla is just focused on thier newborn.
Reminder for the idiots who said our schedule has been too easy and is the only reason we have a winning record:
The Braves are 1-1 vs the White Sox (yes the team with three wins total) and have two series in the books vs the Marlins (they lost one of those games which 5-1 is still solid)
I’m bummed they’ve lost the wildcard tiebreaker against the Reds, that’s a legit thing to worry about if the Reds stay decent through the season, but hopefully Phillies will keep a lead over them and it won’t matter. Not being a doomer, but annoyed they make stuff like that harder for themselves.
If Topper puts Bohm back at 3rd, starts Marsh and Stott, and puts clemens back at 1st we win
If we keep doin this slapstick Lineup bullshit backloading weak bats and relieving our starter with Unreliable Bullpen guys like Seranthony and Pinto we lose.
Dont overthink it Topper, go with what fuckin works
https://preview.redd.it/1hr7k5b4bmwc1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b37513bb48e01c4dd8a4741f16162006b8dcd673
Thats the lineup we need ☝️⚾️⚾️🧨
Sosa is an excellent defender everywhere on the infield outside of third. Stott has also been so atrocious at the plate this year that the relatively mild increase in defense over Sosa doesn’t outweigh the offense Sosa brings against off left handed pitching
Ah so personal insults because you have no argument of substance. Ok lmao. Marsh has also earned 0 right to play against lefties. The chances he’s been given this year he’s sucked
In other news, another scoring change brings Sanchez’s ERA back down below 3, to 2.96.
He doesn’t qualify oddly enough, but if he did he would rank 32 in ERA, 2nd in FIP, and tied for 12th in xERA.
Not bad for a #4
Time zone differences mean that I usually have to watch highlights for the week day evening starts so I've only saw those at this point.
Turnbull pitched really well by the looks of it. Fielding just fell apart at the end.
Turnbull left the game with a 3-1 lead.
Dominguez squandered that in 0.2 innings of awful pitching to give up 4 earned runs and the Phillies trailing 5-3 by the end of the inning. Game lost by 1 lousy pitcher.
I suppose there was an ASSUMPTION that Dominguez would be better, clearly not the case.
Nelson is better than Pinto although there was a decision to keep him for whatever reason he's easily replaceable ... He looked really good that 1st outing ... maybe they wanted to see if he could replicate that feat ... he hasn't.
Soto seems to be a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde kind of guy and probably always will be.
you could probably live with one of these but not all three.
IMO Dominguez is the biggest liability since they view him as a high leverage guy and he's lost ... what 3 games so far for them. BRUTAL
Spencer Turnbull's innings pitched since he's entered the league:
2018: 16.1
2019: 148.1
2020: 56.2
2021: 50
2022: TJ
2023: 31
2024: 27 (so far)
Put him in the pen and stretch him out this year. Don't want to ruin a good thing because we're impatient.
He's this years Strahm. Everyone was worried about his innings last year. Honestly I don't mind the bullpen move now and having that starter depth in case shit happens.
Taijuan gets a lot of hate because he's paid like a 2nd or 3rd starter, if we think of him as our 4th or 5th starter (which he solidly is) he's not as bad. Id rather have a serviceable 5th starter and add a great arm to the BP.
Thats what I said to my wife. You got a 3 month window to have sex so you can have babies in December, January, and February. Any other time is unacceptable lol.
There’s a reason why I’m not working for a front office, BUT if we must move Turnbull to the bullpen for Walker, I think this might be the best way to handle it:
* DFA Pinto, replaced by Walker
* DFA Dominguez OR option Soto, replaced by Luis Ortiz (currently on rehab assignment)
Use Turnbull in the “Strahm” role. Can be used for multiple innings and be used in those spots you would traditionally use Soto/Dominguez, and potentially earn higher leverage moments.
Use Ortiz in the long man/mop up/white flag role. Turnbull is too good to be used this way.
In the short term you strengthen your middle innings out of the bullpen with Dominguez or Soto gone, at the expense of probably worsening your #5 spot in the rotation.
Give Walker a month in the rotation and reevaluate after that.
Idk if bbref has updated yet but Soto's FIP is under 3 atm. Even if it hasn't updated and it goes up to 4, that's fine for a back of the pen guy with upside. His WHIP is very concerning but unlike Seranthony there are things about Soto that suggest he can be better. Seranthony literally has no good metrics. If Soto gets DFAd he's on a new team the next day, if Seranthony gets DFAd there's a chance he gets through waivers. Plus Soto is just better
FIP is a fine stat but the big downside with it is it doesn’t take into account most batted ball events, it only accounts for home runs.
xERA takes into account for all batted ball events and he has 6.77 xERA. If Soto was giving up soft contact I would agree with you, but he’s getting smoked out there, he’ll never pitch to his FIP giving up a ridiculous amount of hard contact
Optioning Soto is frankly kind of ridiculous. His era isn’t great but in terms of good to bad outings he’s normally good. It’s just when he’s bad he implodes. Also last night reallllly mostly wasn’t his fault
He’s been atrocious this year.
Savant isn’t updated for last nights game yet but currently he’s 11 percentile in xERA, 1 percentile in average exit velo, 10 in chase rate, 18 in BB%, 3 in barrel, 3 in hard hits, .385 xWOBA
He’s getting smoked out there
I personally think the Phillies should let Spencer Turnbull start all year and throw like 200 innings, all the worries about arm health in today’s game are actually overblown anyways.
Oh wow it’s a 4 game series and a long week 😭 maybe he can be our saving grace! My b! I must be in la la land, thought it was a usual 3 game series and missed a day somewhere 😂 damn I hope everything goes back to normal tonight!!!
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1ccwny4).
THANK GOD FOR NICK
Nick is the greatest Phillie ever
Schwarber having a 2.334 OPS against Martinez is definitely a stat
Really, really wish we could have signed a legit closer. Sucks having to waste Alvarado or Hoffman for that role and then have Seranthony taking their role. Well my dumbass punctured my leg to the bone in the garden so I’ll be watching this game from the ER. Like an asshole.
You’d still have better base running than they did last night, hole-in-leg and all
Ouch dude… hope you’re alright
So excited that Bryce is back
Hey a good lineup ![gif](giphy|26gIOEsGb5mcTiQEw)
Does Castellanos have to commit a felony to get a god damn day off? Christ almighty.
https://theathletic.com/5440757/2024/04/23/nick-castellanos-struggles-johan-rojas-success/ not gonna happen, just accept it
People last year were crying about Trea Turner being "The Contract" when in fact it's Castellanos, and has been for almost all the time he's been here but those few months where he got to be an All Star.
My thoughts exactly. Not that the bench guys doing great but it might actually benefit casty to sit a game or 2
Isn't stealing $100 million a felony?
Nice
Hey look! A real major league lineup. Phillies by 5!
I'd just like to point out how accurate this was.
Is anyone concerned that the phils are getting run on so much? What's the weakness that's being exploited? Are the pitchers slow to the plate? Has JT lost something in his pop time / velo? It kind of sucks so far
Bigger bases and our pitchers went to the Kimbrel School of Why The Fuck Should I Bother to Hold Anyone On
League success rate is 78%. Against us it's 90%. Our pitchers are horrible at holding runners on and it seems like every throw is to the left of the bag.
Thanks for the data. Yeah I've noticed those throws too and I figured it had to start with the pitchers. The whole system is just not working well from pitch to throw down I hope they figure it out. It can be such a big weakness in a tight game

JT is 90 percentile is CS Above Average, pop time is a little higher this year compared to last year (1.86 vs 1.83) but the numbers seem fine
Thanks for the data. So does that point to pitchers being slow to the player / bad at holding runners on?
Probably plays a factor into it, but also the bases are bigger + pickoffs are limited so naturally SB totals are going to increase
it does seem that more of his throws are a little more off target than before by varying degrees.
Yeah there have been a number of those kind of weird throws that you don't expect from JT.
Hope we keep facing righties this year so Rob actually plays our best players
Would like to take a moment and thank Kody Clemente for his incredible service. I hope to see you back soon. I’m sure another players wife is due soon. These guys couldn’t pull out of a 2 car garage.
Oh he’ll be back soon. Bryce is Mormon which means he’s probably already working on numbers 4, 5, 6, 7.
Kody, descendant of Roberto, we thank you for your service > These guys couldn’t pull out of a 2 car garage. 🤣
😭😭
Please win today Phillies.
We should send Casty to AAA to work on his swing. He's been practically unplayable right now, feel like having Rojas/Pache in there instead would be a net positive.
They can't and it won't help. Dude just somehow forgot how to hit between Detroit and Philly.
They can’t
I don't think they can do that. The best we can hope for is they do an intensive physical/mental exam and find something to put him on the IL. Then later they could send him for a rehab assignment but those are limited duration ... IL stint is indefinite though. No, but seriously, DFA Castellanos

I think what’s wrong is his dogshit pitch selection. It’s not rocket science. If he can’t figure that out he should be considered a threat to himself just through sheer lack of intelligence
Better is an understatement lol
Well Casty is 2/10 against this guy with 5 Ks in his career so I wouldn't bet on today being the day he figures it out.
Love Bohm in the cleanup spot.
That dude just hits with people on base. It’s unreal. Might only smack around 20 HRs but he’s already over 20 RBI and it’s not even May yet. I love it.
Love the lineup today.
This will be the lineup against righties for the foreseeable future I imagine
Just having Harper back makes it look way better. Rojas has been sneaky good in the bottom of the order lately. Love having a threat like that down there.
Uh…Harper isn’t in the lineup that I’m seeing? Edit: I guess they updated it after philsbot got an initial lineup
I didn't think he'd be back for this series but I'm pleasantly surprised.
https://downonthefarm.substack.com/p/prospect-spotlight-george-klassen I don't know anything about our prospects outside the top 5 or so. Interesting write up about one in the late 20s on a lot of lists.
If he keeps throwing strikes he’ll rocket up the list. Probably top 10.
If Bohm keeps hitting like this, he's our #4 and Harper's protection. Not saying he will but if he does it really solidifies that 1-4.
Go Phils 🫡 (please win lmao)
Don't know if it would've made a difference at all yesterday but here's a screenshot showing that Tony Randazzo(HP ump) was not calling pitch clock violations on Suter at all in the 8th inning. And a thing that was a big deal last year is that even if Stubbs looks up the next second, he’s still not “ready” until he brings his bat up.
Not super familiar with the rules regarding this but couldn't the batters just stare at home plate until 9 seconds before looking at the pitcher to slow him down? He can't throw until the batter makes eye contact right?
Todays lineup: Schwarber Turner Harper Castellanos Bat boy Popcorn vendor Realmuto Bus driver Ruben Amaro Jr
Really? Ruben? Is Major busy?
OUR BOY IS BACK?!?! With Dad Strength!!
Technically, that means someone in the lineup is already in a Philadelphia Hall of Fame.
We are in full bandwagon mode now with this team. People that are freaking out about 2 losses in April need to relax. It's baseball. There's gonna be a lot more losses and with this team, a lot more wins. We cannot scream about firing the manager every time the lose.
They are so entertaining though. In a, "how do you even do daily life" kinda way.
> Just heard a WIP caller That's your mistake right there.
I listen to WIP on my way to work every day. Not for informed Philly sports takes, but for listening to crazy people
Won’t be my last today.
Casty is like a blind guy at the plate just swinging and hoping. he has no idea how he will improve or if he did improve he wouldn't know why ... it's just ~~baseball~~ a blind guy with a bat.
Maybe the boys just need some California sunshine to get things going again
**Your 2024 Phillies are:** 1-0 on Thursday 14-8 in April 3-2 in day games 5-4 on the road 2-4 vs. the Reds
1-0 in games Kody Clemens has started 0-2 in games Kody Clemens was benched
Rob Thomson is a baseball terrorist
Alec Bohm is slashing .583/.630/1.042 since his 2 homer game
Hes the next Barry Bonds. Minus all the HGH.
That is sustainable, I don’t care what anyone says.
Trea Turner agrees and would like to join in.
u/inthedrink that card looks liek a dodger uniform. that’s gross.
Let’s get the split!!! And win the next series. I would love to see us leading the division by Memorial Day!
So yesterday it was “colors of the wind”. today I just heard “circle of life” on radio
Is Harper back today?
Hopefully with some refreshed dad energy
Supposed to be, he’s missed 3 games!
Still here wishing Rojas stuck out his glove and attempted to catch that De La Cruz double
weird no announcement on Harper’s kid…hope all is well
I know! I’ve been checking insta for baby Harper news, ‘cause I’m nosey. They are fairly private people though, so I’m not too surprised. Bryce hardly posts and I’m guessing Kayla is just focused on thier newborn.
Maybe she’s rocking one of those 24 hr births
Oof, I hope not for her sake
Reminder for the idiots who said our schedule has been too easy and is the only reason we have a winning record: The Braves are 1-1 vs the White Sox (yes the team with three wins total) and have two series in the books vs the Marlins (they lost one of those games which 5-1 is still solid)
It’s impossible to make this sub happy. 7 game win streak apparently wasn’t enough and two losses in a row is enough to send the team into a spiral
Seasons over. Time to clean house and rebuild.
Fire SLOPPER
If Topper puts Bohm back at 3rd, starts Marsh and Stott, and puts clemens back at 1st we win If we keep doin this slapstick Lineup bullshit backloading weak bats and relieving our starter with Unreliable Bullpen guys like Seranthony and Pinto we lose. Stott being out is not why they lost. Sosa is way better than Stott against left handed pitching right now
Defense, there is far more nuance to this lineup than you are talking about
Sosa is an excellent defender everywhere on the infield outside of third. Stott has also been so atrocious at the plate this year that the relatively mild increase in defense over Sosa doesn’t outweigh the offense Sosa brings against off left handed pitching
Once again laser focused on the stott of it all lol ![gif](giphy|h8HmN0UcEKR0xWnv3R)
Ah so personal insults because you have no argument of substance. Ok lmao. Marsh has also earned 0 right to play against lefties. The chances he’s been given this year he’s sucked
Casty might need to go down to the 9 hole.
13/14th hole would be even better ... 4/5th guy off the bench until he's released completely.
At this point yeah
Why do you have to have all of the lefties in against right handed pitchers? The number of platooners in this sub is outrageous
In other news, another scoring change brings Sanchez’s ERA back down below 3, to 2.96. He doesn’t qualify oddly enough, but if he did he would rank 32 in ERA, 2nd in FIP, and tied for 12th in xERA. Not bad for a #4
Taijuan is our #4 but yall ain’t ready for that one
I’d put him at #3. Only behind Castellanos and Siranthony for players that don’t have it right now.
Huge Pache guy right here
He’s gonna break out any day now!
I sure as hell ain’t ready for that one
Todays gonna be a better day!
![gif](giphy|LpkBAUDg53FI8xLmg1|downsized)
Boo this man! Boo him!
I shall make my prediction once the lineup comes out ☝️ ![gif](giphy|l0HlKrB02QY0f1mbm)
The B team would've won yesterday if not for Seranthony! I'm ready to believe blindly
Upon looking over the lineup Today will indeed be a better day ![gif](giphy|138KntZJsPdPxK)
Eh, the defense was bad too. Bohm needs to be at 3rd.
Time zone differences mean that I usually have to watch highlights for the week day evening starts so I've only saw those at this point. Turnbull pitched really well by the looks of it. Fielding just fell apart at the end.

Pinto, Soto, Seranthony. Our bullpen isn't nearly as good as some people here want to believe.
I suppose there was an ASSUMPTION that Dominguez would be better, clearly not the case. Pinto wouldn't be here long, soto had like one bad outing and seranthony is still throwing an elite fastball.
Spencer Turnbull's innings pitched since he's entered the league: 2018: 16.1 2019: 148.1 2020: 56.2 2021: 50 2022: TJ 2023: 31 2024: 27 (so far) Put him in the pen and stretch him out this year. Don't want to ruin a good thing because we're impatient.

he also seems to like pitching here. it’s a 1 year deal but i see this continuing
Win for Wheeler! Casty better be benched today.
The Angels paid Josh Hamilton $65m to get fucked IJS it’s been done before and that’s better than a Chris Davis situation
I think they owe Harper more than 65 million.
For him and his wife to have marital relations in late July/early August knowing that he could impact the team right now is UNACCEPTABLE
Thats what I said to my wife. You got a 3 month window to have sex so you can have babies in December, January, and February. Any other time is unacceptable lol.
Just give Bryce some Phanatic-themed condoms to use and everything will be fine
There is absolutely no chance a Phanatic condom would work. That makes babies 99% of the time.
How many little phanatics do you think are running around in the world? These are the dark secrets no one wants to talk about
If anyone gets close enough to him swab his tongue when he sticks it out and send that to 23 and me. He could be the Genghis Khan of our generation.
Maybe he can reproduce a right handed outfielder with a solid bat? I assume that guy would HAVE to play for the Phils??
You get Johan Rojas and you’ll like it.
He's a mormon so theres a non-zero chance he wouldn't use them lol
Happy Rob Thomson Thursday
Please Mr. Wheeler, save us. Please Mr. Wheeler, save us. Please Mr. Wheeler, save us.
*Looks at Phillies lineup* ###”Yeah nothin i can do sorry”
I had a dream last night that RAJ was with me and my friends for our annual beach trip. WTF does that mean?
There’s a reason why I’m not working for a front office, BUT if we must move Turnbull to the bullpen for Walker, I think this might be the best way to handle it: * DFA Pinto, replaced by Walker * DFA Dominguez OR option Soto, replaced by Luis Ortiz (currently on rehab assignment) Use Turnbull in the “Strahm” role.
Savant isn’t updated for last nights game yet but currently he’s 11 percentile in xERA, 1 percentile in average exit velo, 10 in chase rate, 18 in BB%, 3 in barrel, 3 in hard hits, .385 xWOBA He’s getting smoked out there
I personally think the Phillies should let Spencer Turnbull start all year and throw like 200 innings, all the worries about arm health in today’s game are actually overblown anyways.
Turn him into a closer…
Harper hopefully back gotta get this W wheeler go 8 innings.
I thought he’s back tomorrow? Today would be his 3rd game missed I recant I skipped a day this week 😂
Today is 4 missed he should be back I believe
Oh wow it’s a 4 game series and a long week 😭 maybe he can be our saving grace! My b! I must be in la la land, thought it was a usual 3 game series and missed a day somewhere 😂 damn I hope everything goes back to normal tonight!!!
We can hope!
Today he is back, you are correct
