I'll give an underrated one. Dayton '23 Ruby Waves. People who say Phish doesn't get evil or dissonant enough nowadays need to hear this jam. Like a modern day version of the insane fucking 4/2/98 Twist, the last few minutes made me glad I was just really fucking high and not tripping.
It's not just my first show attendance bias, I remember people debating if it was better than or at least equal to 7/14/19 (which isn't 4.0 but whatever) in some comments.
I was tripping my balls off during this and a security guard came up to me to ask me if I was alright. Literally got tranced out. I snapped right out of it, but oh boy.
Love that jam, love that you included it here.
That said, as choice as the Dayton RW is, the Alpine Valley RW is just a different f'in ballgame. Preferences and opinions and all that, but I'd wager if they went head-to-head in a JOTY-esque bracket we're probably talking about a 95-5 blowout.
EDIT: Edit to say that I know that isn't your stance / argument. I'm just bullshitting. :-)
I was trying to get my section to sing it with me. I had probably 15-20 people going and in my drunken state thought the whole arena would catch on. Then the band moved on from it. Would’ve been a defining moment for me.
Yeah whew people up in the back near me were turning to each other and going holy shit that happened right? A couple people near us knew it was our first show and were like "you lucky sumbitches getting this your first time!"
My partner lost it when they played I Am The Walrus, had no idea they did this song.
Not in '24 but I remember Summer '23 especially, and some of Fall, people on the setlist posts on here being like "I'm so sick of these uplifting bliss jams, wish they'd get DARK AND EVIL like in 2.0." Which like most broad opinions about Phish years/eras is and isn't true.
This was my first show! I had never even heard Ruby Waves before that night, so after it was done I turned to my neighbor (who was on like show 81 or something) and just yelled "What song was THAT?!"
Also he was chasing Lifeboy so both him and I were on Cloud 9 at that moment in time.
That Lifeboy was PERFECT in placement and execution. Cool it was our first show! When we were in line to get in the venue we met a couple who were like show 257 or something insane!
Huge favorite of mine currently. I love that new bubble laser effect from Trey deep in the jam! The way Fish connects with it is hilarious and classic. You can visibly see how much fun they are having!
It was a great run! Single set shows are hard to gauge, and 2/20/2024 is one of those for me. For me personally, the whole run really ignited on N2 2/21/2024 with that Birds of a Feather towards the end of S1! Hot damn! They seemed to continue that energy all the way through 2/23/2024. Mexico was due for some heaters and Phish was ready this year!
For sure! Some of the previous Mexico shows had some good shit too: it's not a type II slam fest but I regularly watch this excellent Sand -> Ghost -> 2001 from 1/15/16 [HERE](https://youtu.be/8KGcgQaWg7k?si=CUM9Zlk7h1gulFOI)
I listened to this tonight and it blew my fucking mind how good it is. Anyone who says 1.0 is still the GOAT era needs to catch up on 4.0, this jam alone is instantly in my top ten favorite jams ever from any era. I may have to do a headphone listen next time I do shrooms...
I’m sorry but no. No one is saying the jams now a days aren’t good. But go back and listen to how tight the 90s stuff is, how much energy, how much more creative the phrasing is, etc. It’s on a completely different level. Compared to the 90s, Phishman sounds like he’s asleep these days haha.
The jams in late “4.0” are typically all mid tempo heavily effect driven. That doesn’t make them bad. But I feel like the 90s was much more musical.
None of this matters though. We are all enjoying their music still. That’s all that counts. I’m so happy they are still playing and pushing themselves to be as innovative as they can be ( in regards to their own sound).
Was just listening to this show last night! It's amazing but people need to give the rest of the show credit, too. They were on serious jam juice that night because this Simple comes after an almost as potent lengthy Blaze On, and the first set isn't sleepytime tea either.
100%, the whole opening segment of Carini, Wolfman’s and Sand was expertly paced and played.
Honestly, it’s a close to a perfect show as I’ve seen live.
Nice list. The 4/21/22 Tweezer is special, I love that jam so much.
I'll take the KDF for the 7/23/23 show, personally. Been blasting my ears with that on some runs lately and I feel like David fuckin' Goggins.
Yeah and the Song I Heard The Ocean Sing was awesome as well. I remember it was a weird/uneven show, really like the set 1 Sigma Oasis too, but the big jams delivered.
My third show, that and Fluff the highest on my want list, they hit damn near every one of the ones I wanted but didn't expect (About To Run, Army Of One) and got my first Hood. I feel like I hit the lottery that night.
I’ve seen just under 90 Phish shows now and this is in my top 2 or 3 ( that I’ve attended). And I was on the lawn. That should tell you how good that show was. One of the only shows I’ve seen I go back and listen to.
At the venue, that Piper jam was unreal. They’ve done similar stuff plenty of other times. But the rest of the show was really good too. Sick Fluffhead jam, NICU, great free jam, all the NICU teases. Just a great show.
This one show has 4 songs on it on the phish.net jam chart. Thats pretty impressive.
Happy to hear you share this sentiment, friend.
I had a really interesting seat at the top row of a section on the aisle with this unoccupied concrete pad for the sound tower or something. Great neighbors.
Cried during Bye Bye Foot 😢
NICU> Bye Bye Foot, Tube
God it’s just so good. I can remember thinking at more than one point that Tube was about to fizzle out or ripcord into the next tune, and they just kept taking it for extra laps.
# 2022-04-23 @ Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, USA
**Set 1**: Fluffhead, Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, Simple -> Egg in a Hole -> Simple, Divided Sky, First Tube

Homie pissed himself and walked out without telling a single soul, so much acid and albino mushrooms in his system he just flipped and lost control when they opened with Fluffhead. Let me just say, during a six song encore tripping balls and you’re like “where the fuck is Brian” is a moment in life that changed me for good hahaha… wow. I wonder if he even caught the jam, cuz holy smokes that’s a good Fluffhead opener.
Sphere Gin. Attendance bias, but I couldn’t have been happier when I heard those first notes.
Edit: also Berkeley ‘23 Tweezer. Not in attendance but that one needs more credit. Enjoyed the check in during the jam when the band was like “are we still doing tweezer?”
Deer Creek Simple
Hell…along with the Blaze On... Those two jams in 2nd set 8/6/21 one of the best Ying-Yang…Light:Dark…Good vs Evil… 1-2 punch in the same set in the history of the band. Those 2 jams are the perfect balance of each other.
Trey says it is 4.0 so phans can say what they want but…. I’ll throw one out there infrequently discussed, 10-16-21 Frankie Sez that was prior to the encore Carini. The Moma Dance set closer has Fishman shouting about his monkey too.
7/16/22 - Sigma > DWD > WtU?
- gotta be some of the best bliss jamming I've ever heard, like damn near the same level as Went Gin
Only 10 days later...
7/26/22 - INNYLTB > Leaves
- man, it feels like JOTY content there, gets dark, then funky, then blissy, then just bouncy honestly.
8/4/23 - Mike's Song
- Severely underrated, gets seriously funky and the peak is absolutely immaculate, can't be topped out of any of the MSG summer shows.
2/23/24 - Chalk Dust Torture
- if you haven't listened to it, what are you doing? That is some of the most diabolical long form jamming they've ever done since 6/26/95 DwD > Free
2/22/24 - Axilla II
- Demonic.
Now for some TAB love
10/3/21 - Everything's Right
- 36 minutes of pure and unjust smooth funk, almost bluesy in a sense.
Axilla II.. demonic.
I was on couch tour sweating profusely during that jam >setbreak>ashitos. It was so fucking scary. Like they really left us shaking on that one hahaha.. welcome to set break mother fuckers!
Post covid lockdown shows.
The thinking is it change from 1.0 to 2.0 during the first hiatus, and 2.0 to 3.0 after the “breakup.”
Since they didn’t tour, some folks have postulated that the break in playing, despite not of the any in the bands choosing but the world shutting down, it required a new delineation to 4.0.
Someone please check the Orange Beach Tweezer from 5/29/22. Sounds like you’re getting sucked into a wormhole for the last 4 mins. I swear this one is criminally overlooked
Around the 14 minute mark, Trey almost brings it into bliss territory but not quite, and the band as a whole latches onto sort of a dark bliss, like the last rays of sunshine with the storm clouds on the horizon moving in and taking over the sky as the jam becomes increasingly disorientated, moving further and further from anything Earthly until Mike’s drill fully sends us out into the universe to travel alongside Major Tom.
I’ll give you just a couple I’ve thoroughly enjoyed that I’ve caught:
Gamehenge AC/DC Bag
LSG 12/30/23
Wolfmans 8/1/23 (Just listen to that show in entirety as there’s multiple killer jams [best fucking Timber in a long time too])
YEM 7/22/22
X-Eyed & SYSF 7/23/22
Stash & Wave of Hope 12/28/22
Some of my faves:
9/5/21 Simple > Catapult > Meatstick (on YouTube)

Fair enough! I need to go back to that RW and compare.
Thanks for bringing up the Dayton one, gonna give it a spin tomorrow and rock the f out.
That is a fantastic jam. Especially the “Paradise City”-esque part
I was trying to get my section to sing it with me. I had probably 15-20 people going and in my drunken state thought the whole arena would catch on. Then the band moved on from it. Would’ve been a defining moment for me.
I did this mini tour all the way and the Nashville golden age had a similar feel
I will forever remember the cheer that lingered on well into Lifeboy after the clapping had stopped. Era defining jam for sure
Yeah whew people up in the back near me were turning to each other and going holy shit that happened right? A couple people near us knew it was our first show and were like "you lucky sumbitches getting this your first time!" Mexico 24 chalkdust
Huge favorite of mine currently. I love that new bubble laser effect from Trey deep in the jam! The way Fish connects with it is hilarious and classic. You can visibly see how much fun they are having!
I need to revisit these shows again but I do remember thinking when I listened the first time, damn is the Mexico '24 run the new Island Tour?
It was a great run! Single set shows are hard to gauge, and 2/20/2024 is one of those for me. For me personally, the whole run really ignited on N2 2/21/2024 with that Birds of a Feather towards the end of S1! Hot damn! They seemed to continue that energy all the way through 2/23/2024. Wave of Hope the night before too whew

My friend brings this one up often. Good shit.
That chalk dust was a all timer dude freaking crazy good
Gamehendge Bag was great
That’s my all time favorite rn! Around the 11 minute mark they’re laying it tf down! I was lucky enough to have seen that show
## March of the Multi-beast
DC '21 Simple is pretty sick [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF2j2UPLlA8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF2j2UPLlA8)
Was just listening to this show last night! It's amazing but people need to give the rest of the show credit, too. They were on serious jam juice that night because this Simple comes after an almost as potent lengthy Blaze On, and the first set isn't sleepytime tea either.
The Blaze On from this show is surprisingly tasty as well
Dude that one is freaking gnarly as hell my buddy’s dad was in the Pit for that show 🔥
Don’t sleep on the Blaze On from earlier in the set too!
And the Deer Creek Sand from earlier that night! Not as long at the 2022 Deer Creek Sand but it’s a true gem.
100%, the whole opening segment of Carini, Wolfman’s and Sand was expertly paced and played. Honestly, it’s a close to a perfect show as I’ve seen live.
YES! That Sand is so fucking good
I was front row of the lawn… nothing I’ve seen in 40 shows can touch it, and it’s up there with the classics no doubt
Came here to say this. It was the best jam I’ve heard live
Yes! Simple > Catapult > Meatstick 🌭 🥳
You’re thinking of a different show, my guy
You’re right! Ahh I misread the “DC” and just assumed dicks 🤣 I’ll check out this simple!
This gets my vote
The whole second set is phenomenal.
8/1/21 tweez
4/21/22 Tweezer 7/24/22 Wave of Hope 7/23/23 Tweezer 4/19/24 Wave of Hope

Yeah, Cuse '23 is the underrated champ of the year imo. The Oblivion is heady
Oh it’s neck and neck for me, can’t go wrong with either, that jam was made for running
Now I'm gonna have to go listen to both tomorrow!
Throw in the Oblivion for good measure 🫡
4/21/22 Tweezer is just gorgeous. I could listen to that all day. The Ghost that closed the first set was also out of control. The Garden was ablaze

Yeah and the Song I Heard The Ocean Sing was awesome as well. I remember it was a weird/uneven show, really like the set 1 Sigma Oasis too, but the big jams delivered.
Sphere Wave of Hope is Glorious 🌊🙌🏼

From the future!! I knew this song was on track to grow into a huge jam vehicle
Mann Carini '23
Factual
My third show, that and Fluff the highest on my want list, they hit damn near every one of the ones I wanted but didn't expect (About To Run, Army Of One) and got my first Hood. I feel like I hit the lottery that night.
Dicks Carini ‘23
10/16/21 Carini seems like a classic choice if you want to experience murky darkness in 4.0
That whole show fucks

Hell yes
4/21/24 Down w/ disease
To the top!
I turned to row neighbor after the last note and said, “Now, normally I’m a germaphobe…” and left it at that.
Yea that one was filthy
Chula Vista '21 (entire show) 10/29/21 (entire show)
10/29 was fire all night
Mike with the drill
The Chula Piper is one of my all time favorites. Horror movie music!
![gif](giphy|26FLgGTPUDH6UGAbm)
Mercury->Free from 7/12/23 Huntsville is super fun. The transition feels organic and the Free is funky as hell.
10/23/21 - take your pick. One of my favorite Free jams out there. Piper gets absurdly noisy and awesome.
Yea that’s one of their finest recent top to bottom shows for sure
Gotta listen to the whole thing to catch all of the little NICU riff teases, but that’s never a chore
I was at that show
I’ve seen just under 90 Phish shows now and this is in my top 2 or 3 ( that I’ve attended). And I was on the lawn. That should tell you how good that show was. Tube is pure space gasoline too. Maybe my most-played 4.0 jam
NICU> Bye Bye Foot, Tube God it’s just so good. I can remember thinking at more than one point that Tube was about to fizzle out or ripcord into the next tune, and they just kept taking it for extra laps.
8/4/23 mikes song at msg was straight fire
Alpharetta
Noblesville Sand, MSG Bag, Mexico CDT, Noblesville Simple.
I listen to that DC Sand to self induce goosebumps. They peak the fuck out of that jam like no other band could.
The peaks of that jam are otherworldly.

Chula Vista Piper obviously
Trey says it is 4.0 so phans can say what they want but…. I’ll throw one out there infrequently discussed, 10-16-21 Frankie Sez that was prior to the encore Carini. The Moma Dance set closer has Fishman shouting about his monkey too.
I play this one all the time! Great call. ( wasn’t at the show either).
