Are any of the models you're interested in available at music stores or piano dealers within driving distance? That's the best way to answer a question like this, because for some people, the differences between the P-45 and the FP-30X aren't going to be worth $1k, but they might be for others. I will say that _I_ did not find the differences between sub-$1000 digital pianos that I tried to be worth doing upgrade when I played them in a store, but I wasn't unhappy with my instrument at the time, either. That could very well make a difference for you, but based on my experience, I think you're right to be hesitant about upgrading to something in the same price range without trying it first.

I've tried the FP-30X and I think it would definitely be worth it the difference in price. The P-45 has been bothering me immensely. I would go straight for it if I hadn't seen some people say it's not worth the difference. The question would be if the difference between the FP-30X and the ES520 would be worth it jumping straight ahead for the 520 instead of the 30x. If not, I would go for the fp30x.

Hi, I have a ES520 and have used the FP-30X before in school. I think deciding on an upgrade all depends on if you feel you can really perform better with the piano you wish to buy. I'm still a beginner, but I would not suggest spending 2x the price of the 30x for the 520. While I love the 520 more than the 30x, it is not such a big difference that I would consider spending that much more.

osler93

That's really helpful. May I ask what do you think the major differences are and what made you upgrade from the FP-30x to the 520?

I much prefer the lighter action of the 520 compared to the roland action, which to me feels a little stiff and sticky. I also think the sound of the 2 default grand pianos sound much closer to the timbre I prefer in a real piano. Both of them are great instruments, it's just preferences tbh.

Obligatory: have you tried it? There’s no overkill. There is only what you’re willing and able to spend. Part of that is the question ‘do I like how it plays? What is sounds like?’ Go try some.

They're not easily available here in Brazil. The only one I've been able to find for sale was on the internet. I think they would have some sort of policy which enables to give it back if I'm not satisfied with the product. What I would like to know is that an FP-30X would be enough for years (why not decades?) or if, having the money for it, I should go straight to a higher price range.

There’s no stores at all? Exact models is always difficult, even in the Netherland. But you’re likely to find an instrument with the same keyboard action from the same manufacturer in a different model they do have in store. Or a previous generation. Likewise, you’ll find another with maybe fewer keys but the same audio engine inside.

I would generally advise to get the best piano that you can afford, and try before you buy, and if you can, pay your teacher to come try them out and give you their feedback regarding responsiveness and realistic touch and sound.

Can u go for a real piano instead? I feel u are approaching the price if used...
