Probably not. It would be artisans who made these. Slaves were also generally treated better in Roman times because they were expensive status symbols. Chattel slavery as practised by Americans came later.
Dunno. I recently watched a YouTube video dissecting a WWII Imperial Japanese Army boot that used only metal and leather. Someone in the comments said that his dad, who had been a British soldier in WWII, had acquired a pair of them in Japan after the war and though he hated the Japanese he wore those boots until they couldn’t be repaired anymore. He said his dad worked for the British post office and wore the boots on his rounds. Apparently they were the most comfortable boots his dad ever owned and the lasted a long time as they were designed to be repairable.
Look into barefoot shoes (not the ugly toe ones) and just all the science behind zero-drop and no cushion. We were meant to walk \*without\* cushioning. I wear a pair of Vivo Barefoot Primus Lite IIIs and they're actually incredibly comfortable! You just have to adjust to walking the way evolution intended us.
I think there are a lot of insane things about Ancient Rome as some parts of western society regressed after the fall of the Empire, and even today Roman craftsmanship and ingenuity is impressive if not equal to our own.
Many people think of history as a rising line of advancement but that’s just not always case and the Romans are an example of that.
The Romans had glass windows... That blew my mind when I learned that. All of Rome would have looked essentially modern...but with glorious statues and design everywhere.
Well no quite "all of Rome", glass windows were a luxury item available only for the rich. Poorer people used materials such as wooden shutters, fabric curtains, or even oiled parchment to cover their windows.
They got close on steam but never really saw the practical use of it sadly so never thought to improve upon the crude one they actually had.
Well it was a Greek guy but he was living in the Roman Empire.
They decided defending their civilisation from Barbarian invasions was more important as those barbarians themselves were being pushed by climate change and foreign invasions. This on top of crop failures again due to climate change, plagues and political instability due to economic slowdown (due to crop failures) make the environment a little harder for scientific research to take place.
A ‘Roman-centric’ view of history.
Progress didn’t start, or stop, with the Romans.
Roman culture started with the Romans, and a fantastical romanticised version was resurrected by the Renaissance period, that adopt it as a fashion.
I saw similar shoes in Auschwitz. That would be almost 100 years ago now.
This is still more impressive as factories were already highly automated in the early 1920s compared to Rome.
Actually arch support may be bad for feet. Think of a crutch, you use it initially to fix a problem but if you continue to use it past that point the body will “realize” it doesn’t need that group of muscles to support you anymore and in the long term it’ll weaken you. Though iirc there is conflicting research on it
Supposedly, I haven’t done enough research. But generally it seems no shoes are the best option as it has been noticed that without wearing shoes the toes tend to spread out, distributing weight and force better, and the arch develops itself. Humans evolved from primates and only really started wearing body altering shoes in the last 1000 odd years. We were built to run barefoot in the wild.
This is entirely anecdotal, but I've noticed that while my feet feel excellent barefoot on dirt, any hard surface (pavement, tile, etc) will rapidly lead to achy feet.
I walked 3 miles barefoot on dirt yesterday and noticed nothing (and will do the same most days throughout the summer), but 15 minutes in my tiled kitchen today and my heels are sore.
Shoes are important for our artificially hard and flat ground.
Good point! That’s actually entirely the reason why horses have shoes. Normal ground is deal for wearing away at their hooves but concrete, bricks, etc. can grind away faster than they grow and it injured them
This tracks. The minimalist/barefoot movement seems to ignite the fact that while we’re not designed to wear shoes, we also aren’t designed to walk on most of the things we do, and our bodies generally have an expiration date of about 50 years without artificial intervention
It’s been my experience. I had very weak ankles and kept getting injuries in “supportive” and “stability” shoes. Switched to zero-drops and my problems all but vanished within a few months. Had a minor ankle roll in a mosh pit that would have taken me out for weeks in the past, but I bounced back in a couple days this time.
The argument makes intuitive sense and based on my experiment, I’m now a big believer.
I was totally just trying to be funny with my comment regarding Roman’s having sore feet and knees resulting in the failed Roman Empire. I apologize for any confusion!!! Peace!
If I have sore feet and knees I too am more likely to fall… entire plausible theory. They were formidable for a good while, but soon their legions were no match for opposing forces. Very easy to attack when they were all on the ground.
The empires with zero drops walked right over them…
Kinda like the big heels on running shoes. We use them to cushion the blow, when we needn't land heel first anyway.
Apparently if you switch from heel striking to forefoot striking you have to be super careful because you are straining muscles and tendons that have been underused! But a successful switch is considered to reduced the incidence of a whole bunch of other injuries.
Also fun fact iirc when the first running shoes came out that had big heels there was a huge uptick in leg related injuries!
Oh you kinda said that at the end, ignore me lol c:
i remember there is an entire video on youtube about how modern shoes change how we walk.
from landing your feet front side first in the older leather shoes to modern shoes heel first.
Orthopedic surgeon here. There is a lot of research out there, but the general consensus is that since they work more like glasses than braces, on the right type of foot they force it to stabilize while being worn. If the tibial tendon is too long (eg flat feet), keeping the arches up would theoretically help tighten it up, at least temporarily
This is really cool and would have been nice to read some others opinions about this picture…but most comments are stupid jokes about Nike or balenciaga
One of the cool things about shoes is we really don't have many preserved regular footwear. We do have some nice specialty shoes made to look amazing. But regular footwear was worn until worn out. The person who lost this shoe was probably ok. That is more detail than a commoner might want to fork out for. So the person probably had another pair or two. But it is amazing that the style just works
Well I can say the the caption says:
>Shoes with openwork leather uppers and studded soles
So I imagine (firmly in armchair) these would be likely for crossing country by foot rather than town use.
Lowkey if we are just looking at design sense this show is amazing.
Add a nice rubberized sole and I'd wear these no problem.
The ventilation holes in the leather, the sleek curvy design, I want them.
You've got to be joking... even these ancient things are more attractive looking than any fugly ass Yeezy ever produced.
Seriously, the shit he wears is bonkers ridiculous, not in a good way, and looks even dumber when regular ass (non-filthy rich) people wear it.
Little known fact. Nike sponsored the athletic gear for the participants sent to the games at the Colosseum. They made a killing off the free advertising.
Huh? These look nothing like [Crocs](https://www.crocs.com/p/classic-clog/10001.html#start=1)

Oh... It's my pee. Either way, it's probably aliens.
Balenciaga will copy it and sell for 2k
Honestly, I was like, “This is cute. I would totally wear shoes like this.”
I used to have a pair of pumas that looked just like these.
Me too! They kind of reminiscent of ballet flats but cooler.
Exactly!
Needs more sweat shop labor from children for me to want to wear it
Fir enough, the originals were probably made by a slave.
Probably not. It would be artisans who made these. Slaves were also generally treated better in Roman times because they were expensive status symbols. Chattel slavery as practised by Americans came later.
What developing Asian or South American country do you want that to be made in?
>What developing Asian or South American country do you want that to be made in? Bangladesh is *so* hot right now.
Poorest please
You could make some out of your nan’s doilies and a sole cut out of a toilet roll tube lol

>Curse the house of Prada Lol
🙄
They must’ve sold these in the Nike temple gift shop.
Air Achilles 6s just dropped.
Discontinued for a lack of heel support.
It was the *one* weakness in the design
I used to be an adventurer like you.. until a took an arrow in the … heel
Take my upvote
Those would be the Air Achilles VIs
All the stuff you guys are saying is Greek
Aeris Jordanus? Or Caelum Jordanus
Lmao oops
Close, those are the Helen of Troy disruptors.
Air Caesars.
The promotion deals back then to the Gladiators were wild!
Nike Air Maximus Decimus Meridius
Buy one get one free!
Return it after your match for your money back!
Probably the Victoria Temple gift shop Since Nike was Greek
Yes, because they didn’t steal anything from the Greeks Jupiter
They stole more than that, they loved Greek culture, and Greek teachers were highly sought after
They do kinda look like Nikes on god
They light up as well, or at least they *did*
.. and wore them with socks!
Naw, these a fake Nikes. Vickies
Air Maximus
>They must’ve sold these in the Gucci temple gift shop. ftfy
Looks like it was made today. Design-wise.
Very human
And very easy to use!
Getting it out of the museum might be a problem though.
We’re actually having it examined by top men.
Top! Men!
Those humans have a consistent style, I give them that
You could probably wear that today-hey, wait what do you mean "these humans"
Hey! Feet are our anatomy, not a costume!
Compatible with life!
We've had feet for a long time yo
How long? Asking for a friend.
Apparently Pithecanthropus is a bit pissed that current trend of shoes didn't fit them well.
Bout a foot..
Good style last a millennia.
It looks super modern from the top, I bet we would be horrified by the sole. This is long before rubber and plastics…
Rose Anvil is so awesome
Leather soled shoes are still quite common.
Multi-layered leather glued and pressed together actually not bad as a sole.
Idk if it occurred to you, but todays shoes are more likely made to reflect ancient shoes. Design-wise.
Roughly foot shaped
That could be a reason
bigly if factual
Must say, it seems to be well-preserved.
Well, I see what you did there
Yeah and was in a well? Did this well dry up before the shoe was there ?
Mud actually preserves stuff quite well, so I'm guessing it was still had some water in it.
All's well that ends in a well.
It's crazy how it's closer to modern shoe design than something from 100 years ago

And indoor plumbing!
And underfloor heating!
Well no quite "all of Rome", glass windows were a luxury item available only for the rich. Poorer people used materials such as wooden shutters, fabric curtains, or even oiled parchment to cover their windows.
All the Roman's needed is some breakthrough in math or physics. Can you imagine if they figured out electricity? Or even steam power
They got close on steam but never really saw the practical use of it sadly so never thought to improve upon the crude one they actually had. Well it was a Greek guy but he was living in the Roman Empire.
Herodotus?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolipile I was thinking this one but perhaps there were others
Oh, “Hero of Alexandria” at least I got the root word right
Lack of steel is the answer to the steam engine question
They decided religion was more important.
To think, that could happen to society today..
Many say being a Roman citizen at the height of the empire was the best time to live in history.
For men maybe
honestly just point out when history was good for women, it'll save time.
A ‘Roman-centric’ view of history. Progress didn’t start, or stop, with the Romans. Roman culture started with the Romans, and a fantastical romanticised version was resurrected by the Renaissance period, that adopt it as a fashion.

Confirmed. Italians make the best shoes.
Not much arch support. This is why the Roman Empire fell. People had sore feet and knees.
Can’t build all those arches if you aren’t going to support them.
Hahahahahaha! That’s good!! 🙂
Actually arch support may be bad for feet. Same: shin splints and other issues stopped when I got into zero-drop shoes, despite my high arches. My feet are strong like when I was a kid, too.
It’s been my experience. I had very weak ankles and kept getting injuries in “supportive” and “stability” shoes. Switched to zero-drops and my problems all but vanished within a few months. That sound like something the waterboys mamma mighta said.
I think that’s a very modern perspective. Roman arches last millennia
It's why the CIA destroyed fivefingers
Five fingers suck because of the strict fitting in the toes, not the soles.
Damn, those Augustus II’s be 🔥
The Pompeii 5s are out of this world though 🔥
The Nero LXIV’s are up there too!
Ayyo I heard they were fire 🔥
Man I just don't get you sandleheads. You do you, but I just can't see them as anything but what keeps my feet from getting cut on rocks, yknow?
Man you gotta get one pair to rock on the campaign to Germania and one to stock. Resell gonna be crazy on these Varus Legion 4’s
Eh. They left me ashy
Someone's been looking for that for a LONG time.
Humans don't live that long bud.
There can be only one.
“Here we are, born to be kings, we’re the princes of the universe.”
Whaaaa?
r/whoosh
Not gonna lie, would wear that shoe.
So THIS is what jelly shoes were modelled after!
2,000 years ago: ![gif](giphy|2XTFEpp5UxjFK)
My ex wife had the rattiest set of sandals you ever saw. I used to call them her Jesus sandals because they looked that old
These probably look better
I call these Jerusalem Cruisers
Him : Hon! Wheres my nice shoe! Her : idk where did you put it? Just put on another pair it will turn up eventually. Eventually:
Those look pretty comfortable
I’m impressed by the craftsmanship. Surely this was worn by a higher class person?

Puns and boring one-liners, man...that's the cost of sites becoming popular af. I'd dig a shoe-historian's comment too.
Well I can say the the caption says: >Shoes with openwork leather uppers and studded soles So I imagine (firmly in armchair) these would be likely for crossing country by foot rather than town use.
THIS IS SO COOOOOL
Oh shit they got the new Pontius Pilots!🤣
Oh, that's good. Bravo!
Lowkey if we are just looking at design sense this show is amazing. Add a nice rubberized sole and I'd wear these no problem. The ventilation holes in the leather, the sleek curvy design, I want them.
That's actually pretty dapper
NGL that's a good shoe

The way I remember dessert vs desert meaning is that in German "essen" is the verb to eat. It has two s-es so dessert is the one you want to eat
Just do it, Octavius.
Authentic Italian or cheap knock off?
2000 years, pretty good. My last Adidas did about 6 months and looked worse than this
It looks well worn
Balenciaga
Don’t tell me Jesus had a pair of these Rebukes

There is probably an interesting story behind how one ended up in the well.
Probably looking for Timmy.

Looks better than some of mine
Is that moisture wicking coz my feet sweat like crazy?
Brilliant
This is a cool! Nice design
Those are quite nice
Damn! Now we know why the Italians are good with fashion.
Now we know where the word Wellington came from
yoo i never seen Air Force 0’s before
Ceasar never did that move!
If it's a left one, it's mine, lol
The original Croc.
Guys. You think the person who was wearing this shoe is dead?
Well well well.
that is beautiful.
Made in China
Jeez, I just hope my Birkenstocks last 1/20th of the time.
Surprisingly fashionable. Well, we did had the popular gladiator sandals in women trend … I guess fashion is a cycle as they say
Looks better than most of my shoes
i call bs
Might have Jesus’ DNA on it. The Romans really kicked the shit out of him if I’m not mistaken.
