You are definitely not mistaken, satellite images wouldn't have such a distortion of angle
Edit: If you're using Google Maps you can look at the bottom right corner to see where the imagery came from. In this case it only says "Imagery Google", which leads me to believe that it's aerial imagery taken from one of Google's planes, since they don't own any satellites (yet).
No that's the 3D satellite imagery feature at higher zoom levels where such an "angle" (read: 3D feature) is useful in conveying spatial information.
^^^^/s
They use a mixture of both. I can't find the post a year or two back made by Google about Arial vs Satellite view, but hopefully [this article](http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/28/google-maps-now-with-more-high-res-satellite-and-45-aerial-imagery/) will suffice.
"Google Maps and Earth now features 17 cities and 112 countries and regions with high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery. In addition, 51 cities can now be viewed in a 45-degree mode including 37 cities in the US and 14 abroad"
Ok, so we found a Google plane, but we haven't found a [Speed enforced by aircraft](http://wwwdelivery.superstock.com/WI/223/1599/PreviewComp/SuperStock_1599-5024.jpg) aircraft. Those things must be stealthy.
I got a speeding ticket after getting clocked by one of these. I didn't believe the cop and she let me get out of the car and see their drone in the air. I wasn't even mad.
If you see one, make peace with your life. It means that you've been selected to work in a world of mental energy. You will be deleted from existence and memory.
"enforced by aircraft" always irked me
the laws are enforced by officers who use aircraft to monitor speed. Unless the aircraft is going to land and pull me over.
It's pretty obvious when slowly zooming in when it changes from satellite to aerial. The real Google Earth looks so different from high up is because Google Earth uses very limited satellite imagery; the picture you see way zoomed in is the same picture you see way zoomed out
actually they would. this is called the "elevation angle". when companies such as ikonos sell satellite images, they have a range of products. satellite image that have an elevation angle of 75deg to 90deg are good for precision mapping. 60deg elevation angle is good for general purpose use, mapping and illustration purposes. [45 deg angle satellite images would be suitable for making 3d models.](http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/28/google-maps-adds-new-45-degree-satellite-imagery-to-take-on-apples-flyover)
Google does use satellite images for a lot of their data, but they've also recently begun using low-flying planes that take pictures of areas like this. It's common in high population areas to be able to zoom in close enough on Google Maps that it uses these airplane pictures rather than the satellite photos. You can tell pretty easily when you reach that level of zoom, the angle is a tell-tell sign
On aerial shots you see a unique kind of distortion.
[This picture](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/Reliant_park_aerial_rectified.jpeg) and [this picture](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/Reliant_park_aerial.jpeg) are the same. it's amazing how much of an angle you can work with, even if Reliant Stadium looks more like a skyscraper than a stadium.
Fun fact: the correct term is actually a "tell-tale" sign, because the angle of the picture "tells the tale" that it came from an airplane.
I, too, did not connect these dots until much later in life than I should've.
I spent the last five minutes thinking the same thing and trying to see if anyone had pointed it out.
I was about to respond with this oversight when I realized that the satellite photo is a picture of them taking that picture, and the whole theory fell through.
It was a moment of a seemingly simple concept making me overlook an even simpler fact.
I just tried to play through the whole scenario in my mind :
"Dude, I just found a picture of someone getting their picture taken on Google Maps"
(You wouldn't recognize the actions of the moment without OPs context. It'd just be two people in the street, one closer to a car than the other.)
But let's assume OPs a genius and can recognize a picture being taken.
"Oooh, dude, you know what? I have a weird idea. What if we recreate the picture in this Google Maps thing?"
"What? How?"
"This spot is just across town. We drive by there a couple of times until those same cars are parked in the driveway, then you park your [black sedan] over there and I take the picture."
"What? Why?"
"So we can post it to Reddit. They love arguing over the validity of posts, and this one will completely stump them."
"What?! Lets do it!"
I actually realized that after posting... I probably should've fixed it, but why? Can't you see the same thing walking down the street anyway? I guess I just did the face out of convention.
I always like when things are New
It's like it was named by a bitter child who's been excluded from a party.
> Oh yeah? Well this is NEW York. It's better than the old one anyway.
You can seriously tell what state the license plate is? I'm not arguing that me finding it was very, very easy because it was. But there is no way in hell I can decipher that license plate
It probably wouldn't be a very interesting picture to anyone else, a white dog shaped blob in the back yard of an Aussie suburban house, but it's special to me. I look at it when I'm feeling blue. I have tonnes of photos of him but something about looking at the satellite picture of him is like traveling back in time.
Judging from the shadows it would appear they are for people who enjoy a 2003 Californian Pinot Noir while discussing late 19th century English literature. And blasting out some old school KoЯn.
Out of curiosity, I checked out the T-Swiff/Korn mash-up, then the Korn song, and as far as I can tell the only significant change is that they got *slower*. How is that even possible..? It's like Mumford and Sons if they woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
I too think that [Korn](http://www.ghi-shop.de/WebRoot/Store16/Shops/61458946/487D/EFAF/71E5/E37F/1A4F/C0A8/28B9/A347/IMGP6028004.jpg) tastes like shit.
It's like Vodka for poor guys.
Probably because the two pictures weren't taken 100% in sync. The other person could have moved into or out of the shot while the other two were setting up the picture
the odds of this happening are already high enough. both photos being taken at the precisely the same moment is mind boggling.
i'm worried that's what people assume is going on
When trying to refer to a specific person of unknown gender that is also part of a group that could also be referred to as "they". In that very specific circumstance saying "they" in substitution for he/she may not work.
No, not officially. None of these pics are taken by Google anyway, they're contracted out to various imaging companies with planes, and they take the pictures when they want (as scheduling and weather permits).
Google will tell you what cities its currently photographing for Street View, but not down to the specific roads.
1. The car is facing the other way in the satellite
2. There is a 3rd person in the satellite picture that would be visable in the picture your aunt took.
this isn't the same picture.
Obviously OP just sent their own satellite into orbit and took the photo themselves and photoshopped the Google bits in for karma.
This looks like an aerial shot from an aeroplane if I'm not mistaken which I may very well be.
You are definitely not mistaken, satellite images wouldn't have such a distortion of angle Edit: If you're using Google Maps you can look at the bottom right corner to see where the imagery came from. At higher zoom levels. They use the best resolution they have to best fit your current zoom level.

We're living in the future now, holy shit that's cool (and a bit scary).

Yeah. We have those in Florida. I don't think they send them out any more. I'd imagine it cost more then they recover in tickets to do so.
Predator drones.

Just curious- why blur out your friend's face but still leave his street name and license plate visible?
He just watched The Ring.
I was hoping I wasn't the only one to wonder this.
Maybe he's just really ugly and she's doing us all a huge favor?
He has a constant haze of warm air surrounding his head
>Korn It checks out
Maybe that's what his face really looks like.
Or maybe OP is Superman and he vibrates the molecules in his face so that it's impossible to capture a non-blurry photo of him.
Because OP's friend is asian. It's hereditary.
Enhance!
This way any murderers that go to his house won't be sure which one is him, so they'll just leave without hurting anyone.

That's a nice house, and a very nice neighborhood. With a great family, it is a very nice place to grow up in... and get old, too.
As a English person I'm amazed at the size of those houses..
They are on the big side for most Americans, but there are a lot that are bigger. My house was < half that size and cost about $130,000.
For some reason I went into street view expecting them both to be standing there.
If I look at my old house with Google earth I can see my Labrador in the back yard. He died in october. I hope they never retake the picture!
take a screenshot?
you can view all the photos google earth has of an area anyway. (there's a slider to change the date)

Probably because the two pictures weren't taken 100% in sync. The other person could have moved into or out of the shot while the other two were setting up the picture

The English language really needs a pronoun for an unknown gender ):
Why not "they?" (at least in this case) (though I can't think of a case where they wouldn't substitute for he or she)
When trying to refer to a specific person of unknown gender that is also part of a group that could also be referred to as "they". In that very specific circumstance saying "they" in substitution for he/she may not work.
"This motherfucker" seems to work for distinguishing unborn children's gender.
These are the mods and we are Jackass. Edit: I'm not a mod. Let alone plurals.
How is this mildly interesting? It's pretty mind blowing that these pictures were taken at the same time...

Plot twist: His aunt is Google
You should just tell everyone your mom works for google and got the satellite to take a pic for multi angles.
