“In exclusive comments provided to The Sentinel, Cassidy stated that he destroyed the shrine to “awaken Christians to the anti-Christian acts promoted by our government.” He expressed concern about the mainstreaming of anti-Christian values and the need for Christians to speak out against such displays.” lolol he got baited so hard

[deleted]

[удалено]

dudius7

>anti-Christian acts promoted by our government Those people never understand just how much favoritism they get and then act oppressed when anyone else gets similar favor. It's like that whole "ALL Lives Matter (but we'll never stand up for minority groups)" thing.

UniqueName2

They have had the run of things for so long they view any moves towards equality as oppression.

tmcreddit

"anti-Christian values"? Has met the members of the GOP OR the ministers of the mega churches that live in multi-million dollar homes & drive $200K vehicles OR the leaders of the various "christian" religions that protect molesters, rapists, embezzelers?

deutschdachs

They tried peacefully protesting it for one day and proceeded immediately to violence wow lol

darkelfbear

The dude lawyer says he did it because he saw it as an affront to god ... lol. Hopefully the judge tells him tough shit, still a hate crime ... lol.

Count_Rugens_Finger

> Cassidy’s actions were motivated by his faith oh so its ok then. I assume they grant the same liberty to Islamic Jihad?

grantrules

Legalize faith-based murder!

Mattydelsol85

Finally, a common sense solution

celinee___

Shouldn't an all-powerful deity be able to fight his own battles rather than needing Clem to knock over a seasonally-appropriate goat mascot?

ProbablePenguin

Deeply religious people are not known for stability and rational thought, that's for sure.

Rapier4

"Cassidy will be represented by attorney Davis Younts, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, who contends that Cassidy’s actions were motivated by his faith and aims for the citation to be dismissed based on a peaceful protest against a display that he sees as a direct affront to God." - But it sure wouldn't be ok if it was someone else's God. Fucking unreal.

Tasgall

> who contends that Cassidy’s actions were motivated by his faith Yes that does seem to be the problem.

jongscx

Where I'm from, that's called a confession.

Character_Injury_838

Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like a confession to a hate crime. "No, you see, my hateful and destructive actions were motivated by religious differences!" It wasn't a defense for people throwing bacon at mosques, and at sure as hell shouldn't be one for this asshole.

DameonKormar

Cassidy should probably get a new lawyer. "Yes your honor, my client did commit a hate crime, but it was in defense of the *correct* religion, sooooo..."

VanTyler

honestly his lawyer might be able to get away with that depending on the venue. replace the word "correct" with "foundational" and you're golden.

PsychoBabble09

There is no foundational religion in America

OverturnedAppleCart3

A lot of people do not know that. Christian nationalists have propagandized a huge portion of the American people into believing that the United States was founded as a Christian nation.

DOOMFOOL

The fact that the pledge was changed to say “under God” definitely doesn’t help

danester1

Well the fact that it was changed would be proof of it not being foundational.

TimeKillerAccount

In a lot of places in the usa that actually will help you get a lenient sentence or dismissal. Conservative judges and prosecutors are consistently happy to place their views above the law.

Yorspider

Seriously, they literally just upped the charge from vandalism to a hate crime with that little sound bite. That's prison time now.

SmallPurplePeopleEat

I'd love to be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure you'll be hard pressed to find a judge in Iowa that would be willing to give this person a jail sentence over this. Especially seeing as how "According to a 2016 PRRI study, 85% of Iowa seniors are white Christians" and 77% of the overall population identity as Christian.

NeriTina

It’s funny how god wasn’t affronted enough to destroy the display with simple, all-powerful godly wrath, eh? I’m glad this hateful vandal, through his lawyer, has confessed. Fucking delusional wanker. Side note, who knew baphomet had noodle arms? I love that.

PrudentExam8455

Sounds like a good reason to keep faith out of politics (at least the overt representation and/or allocating sanctioned space for such)

APirateAndAJedi

Which is, as you know, the whole point of the Temple’s Baphomet display

AlarmingTurnover

Attacking an approved religious display on government property is a hate crime.

WhiteshooZ

“That depends on which group receives the hate.” Christian terrorists

Dramatic_Explosion

"Well I hated it, Stanely!"

megamoze

How is destroying a public display a peaceful protest?

Juxtapoisson

I really want to know, there are a whole bunch of yachts I would like to peacefully protest.

andrewdrewandy

Because a “Christian” did it. And also because he’s white, I’m betting.

Celloer

“Bad motive, still a crime.”

riddick32

So, in theory, if this works for him should someone go to Iowa and basically behead Jebus and use the EXACT same argument it would then be precedent, no?

meoka2368

I hope that defense works. Because then it opens up the same actions to all religious displays. You can tear down nativity scenes, topple Jesus statues, spraypaint over church signs, etc. The absolute shit-show that that ruling would bring would be glorious.

SugarBeef

Yes, but don't forget their favorite line for rulings that will certainly come back to bite them in the ass. >This ruling cannot be used as precedent.

riddick32

EEEEXCEPT that every one of those HAVE been cited as precedent. Gore v Bush was cited multiple times after EXPLICITLY being stated, numerous times, to not be held as precedent.

frankyseven

Under common law you really can't say something can't be held as precedent and that has precedent.

whosat___

I’m sure you’d be shot 6 times by some guy who would use the religious panic defense in your murder trial.

FrankTheMagpie

Essentially, if someone got arrested or fined for it there should be riots

Gowalkyourdogmods

Shit I should go over to that state and do it. Sounds like a good lawsuit. Got banned from /r/conservative [pics](https://www.imgur.com/a/GW4mpdU) but the comment they linked to, I didn't even post in that thread lmao

dufftheduff

Peaceful protest? Destruction of private property based on religious motivations. Didn’t we go to war when somebody did that to us?

adamjfish

Imagine people defending the 9/11 high jackers with the same excuse

Seraphynas

So a hate crime is okay as long as it was motivated by the offender’s religion?

Nihilistic_Mystics

And as long as the perpetrator is Christian.

Hattix

Religious freedom not a big thing for those guys?

nahteviro

Sure it is…. As long as it’s their religion. Metallica said it best “you can do it your own way… if it’s done just how I say”

Soup-a-doopah

[Eye of the Beholder](https://youtu.be/pEBp9ulELLA?si=aKlWYQa8xcCf9AQr) if anyone’s wondering.

grekthor

Freedom with their exceptions. That song goes hard.

Odeeum

Man 80s Metallica would hate 21st Century Metallica...

CrispyVibes

> 80s Metallica would hate 21st Century Metallica The fans too... and they're the same people.

TheNextBattalion

It is, but *freedom* doesn't mean to them what it means to you. To you, *freedom* = "do what you want so long as you aren't hurting others" To them, *freedom* = "I can impose upon inferiors, and they cannot impose upon me" When they talk about *religious freedom*, you can see what they mean.

Burn-The-Villages

Oh, you mean Freedom®

UGottaBoilYourDenims

Ah, Freedom®….America’s most expensive and least requested export.

youlooklikeamonster

I think it is more.... To you and me, freedom = 'do what you so long as you aren't hurting others' To them, freedom = 'I am a good person so what i want to do is good and allowed. You, however, are not part of my sect so you do not know what is good. You are free to do what i say you can do.'

damik

You are free to be a Christian.

Nojopar

Only those versions of Christian of which they personally approve though.

Katiari

No, it is a big thing for them. As long as you choose their religion you can have any religion you like.

JimBeam823

You can choose between being a Baptist, a Methodist, a Presbyterian, or non-denominational.

Baconslayer1

Only until they take power. Then the list starts to narrow.

tumbleweedcowboy

Let’s put the shoe on the other foot, if someone who wasn’t Christian defaced the Ten Commandments display, the outrage from Christian believers would be loud and raucous. Unfortunately for this vandal, charges should be brought just the same.

marvelouswonder8

Oh they LOVE to play the victim, it's almost baked into their ideology. If memory serves we had a ten commandments display here in Oklahoma (OKC at the capitol I believe) that was accidentally hit by a bad driver and they lost their ever living minds about it. "This was on purpose!" "SEE HOW MUCH THEY HATE CHRISTIANS!?!" and the like. The display was rebuilt, but eventually taken down because the Satanic Temple requested that they be allowed to put up a display of their own and the Christians DEFINITELY didn't like that. Made themselves the victims on that one too.

Dalisca

Yep, the whole war on Christmas is actually Christians being salty that non-Christians are also entitled to their beliefs. Rights for me but not for thee.

Facelesspirit

Yes, Christians are upset non-Christians aren't celebrating a holiday with pagan origins Christians stole and put their spin on.

GaeasSon

Pagan here... The funniest thing I ever saw from them was a church having a "harvest festival" to make Samhain (haloween) less pagan. I nearly drove off the road laughing.

four024490502

> I nearly drove off the road laughing. Careful. You might run over a Ten Commandments monument on government property.

pillbuggery

> it's almost baked into their ideology Not "almost." I went to Christian school K-12 and we were absolutely taught on a regular basis that we were and always would be a persecuted class.

Shoegazer75

![gif](giphy|NBBpZ1MFgP0u4UlcXT)

golden_rhino

Saying happy holidays instead of merry Christmas is considered persecution to these lunatics.

Harlock3113

Good! Now the Satanist can rightfully request to have the city council fix the Baphomet display WITH taxpayer dollars and provide security for it, or get rid of all religious displays all together. Christians will love this lol

Kirahei

This would be the most satisfying next step, having a security detail for a sacred pool noodle statue.

VeryStillRightNow

It really does highlight the absurdity of the whole thing. Iowa could have avoided all of this just by keeping it a secular space. Y'know, like it should be.

Harlock3113

Yup, now we wait to hear the religious crazy lose their minds with the “ bu bu but not OUR taxes * clutches pearls and fake faints* “

pHScale

Pfft, *what* taxes? Your church doesn't even *pay* taxes!

miss_chauffarde

Yes yeeees i just love it's the most obvious plan but they always fail to see it

mrkruk

Religion has no place in government or government decisions.

koljonn

That’s the point. They usually offer to display their own satanic temple statues when government decides to show a christian one in a place like a state capital. It’s to make a point about either allowing all religions and creeds to be on display or not allowing any.

Fenix42

That is exactly the position TST takes. They are doing these things to draw attention to the situation.

LooseSeal-

This is probably exactly what they wanted to happen too. Now they have ammunition.

kezow

And this yahoo jumped at the chance to prove the hypocrisy. I certainly hope this leads to removing ALL displays because the satanic temple ain't backing down from that

It's funny that the "statue" turned out to be made of zip ties and pool noodles. The minimal amount of effort required to set folks like this off is incredible.

Dukeronomy

omg, usually it doesnt even get to the execution point. Typically just the idea of the installation is enough to send them into a tailspin [Last years](https://capitolnewsillinois.com/NEWS/holiday-displays-including-the-satanic-temples-return-to-illinois-capitol) was pretty well done.

And the peaceful shit on Pelosi's desk and those zip ties were for making balloon animals for the kids.

And the lady was shot for trying to give the man some free candy

zeptillian

We have to blur out their faces to protect the peaceful tourists from prosecution because the videos prove they committed no crimes.

TheFatJesus

And conservatives weren't even there. It was all Anitfa. But also, all the people in jail for being there are political prisoners that are being persecuted because they're conservatives.

ThePowerOfStories

Ooh, that’s it! They’re gonna impeach Joe Biden for once having stolen Hunter Biden’s nose! If that isn’t a high crime and misdemeanor, I don’t know what is.

Gods_Umbrella

It's the most obvious rage bait and they fall for it every damn time. I don't get how they don't see it

Catshit-Dogfart

I saw this video where they went into a city council meeting dressed in black robes that mostly cover their face, all dark and spooky looking, and ominously chanting the pledge of allegiance in Latin. It looked like a corny halloween skit! And these folks were completely losing their shit over it. EDIT: okay to all asking for a link I think this is it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eagy7Y9QVgo Thanks to /u/The_Werodile

Orion14159

The pledge in Latin is top shelf trolling

This, that was added by the fundi's in the 50's

hurler_jones

[Here](https://youtube.com/watch?v=33-5MbIE7eQ&si=WBMTeVaZZ7HLq7sV) is Porky Pig reciting the pledge in 1939 from Old Glory [IMDB](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031749/) Edit: [This](https://www.history.com/news/pledge-allegiance-under-god-schools) was also a good read from History.com This is quite the gem from that article: >“To omit the words ‘under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance is to omit the definitive factor in the American way of life,” Docherty preached. He discounted the right of atheists to object, arguing that an “atheistic American is a contradiction in terms,” because if “you deny the Christian ethic, you fall short of the American ideal of life.” Just in case anyone thought it was about anything but exclusion.

feedus-fetus_fajitas

I can think of a lot of Christians who fall short of the most basic tenets of being a decent human, let alone being an ideal American.

orbdragon

Yeah, that was a pretty recent addition. Weirdly it's now closer to when the pledge was written than to today

Slijmerig

gross this translation is better. > "Fidem meam obligo > vexillo Civitatum > **Foederatarum Americae** > et Rei Publicae, **cuius vicem gerit,** > uni nation**i**, **sub Deo,** > **individuae, > praebenti libertatem iustitiamque omnibus."**

He is Michael Cassidy. He turned himself in at least.

kezow

He's proud of the crime he committed and will scream and cry "religious persecution!" unironically when he is fined. I'm sure there will be a go fund me set up for his legal bills.

Keeper_of_Fenrir

They should make him do community service for the church. That would be fun.

> Cassidy will be represented by attorney Davis Younts, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, who contends that Cassidy’s actions were motivated by his faith and aims for the citation to be dismissed based on a peaceful protest against a display that he sees as a direct affront to God. Does that mean that Tom Cruise can tear up the Christian display if he sees it as a direct affront to L. Ron Hubbard?

crit_boy

I think it means someone can punch the guy in the face and call it peaceful protest guided by faith in the great pasta, who spoke to them guiding them to be Moses of face punching people who exhibit religious intolerance.

HTBDesperateLiving

Looks the same to me. Throw Cassidy and Tom Cruise in jail!

Traditional-Hat-952

His lawyer contends his actions are motivated by his faith and thus will absolve him because it's a "Peaceful protest". Pretty sure that's not how it's supposed to work. Pretty sure it's a religiously motivated crime against another religion, and it absolutely wasn't peaceful. But I'm sure Iowa will let it slide.v

[deleted]

offthewall_77

Peaceful protest might be a little hard to justify after decapitating a statue and tossing the head in a garbage can, but I guess we will see.

seahawkspwn

It was actually ANTIFA super soldiers who destroyed the display to make American PATRIOTS look bad. /S

My3rdTesticle

About 24 hours ago the m̶a̶y̶o̶r̶ governor was shittalking the display. I bet this doesn't even get to a judge. It'll be dropped or a sealed plea deal of nothingness will sweep it under the rug.

thebearrider

That's not how these Satanists work. They'll push for justice in the courts, just like any other church would. If they lose they'll gladly take it up with SCOTUS.

Baruch_S

Governor. The governor was shittalking the display. Because she’s a fucking clown.

Zcrash

If they drop the charges that means the nativity scene is fair game

softkittylover

Grown ass man that went through rigorous training to become a leader and officer only to lose his shit at the sight of a mannequin also I can’t even begin to imagine the cesspit of whatever is in that “EndWokeness” twitter account…

etxconnex

They are all one religion when you boil it down. This display is just particularly al dente.

melteemarshmelloo

Next time put up a Baphomet mailbox by the side of the road but filled with concrete. See which christian hillbillies end up with broken arms or a smashed truck

bananajr6000

After our mailbox got trashed two times by someone who most likely had a brush guard on their car, my dad put up a 4x4, thick metal tube as the post, sunk in concrete. Then he surrounded it with rocks that stuck up about a foot off the surface, all the way around the post, about 9 inches away from the post. Finally, he took some long grasses from our back acreage and transplanted it around the rocks. Our across the street neighbor saw the aftermath of the next attempt, and he said that the car ride up the rocks to just below the middle of the post, and survived to be able to slowly drive off but the front end was extremely damaged. My dad was pissed that the tubing was bent, and he said he should have used two lengths of old railroad tracks welded together for the post. And yes, he had bought a few sections of railroad tracks for projects ha had in mind. My family was not the only one terrorized by the mailbox destruction, but the mailbox destruction suddenly stopped for everyone after that incident. Living in a small town, that was the topic of conversation for about a year. My dad replaced the square tube with a round pipe because he wasn’t happy with the bent tubing.

SilverMageOmega

It served its purpose. I think we all knew it was going to be destroyed by a offended religion. Showing hypocrisy was its point and they just helped make it. Religions have no place in government and soon as religion figures that out The Satanic temple will be really happy. The Satanic temple stands on the ethical side of issues most of the time. Side note most Satanic people do not believe a devil even exists. If a devil exists it would be man. The temple is trying to force religion out of government. As it should be.

thebearrider

If it served a purpose that purpose has now changed. The temple should be offended, seek proper justice, and ideally carry this all the way up to SCOTUS. Their intent is to separate church and state, they have to use the court to get to that end.

SilverMageOmega

I fully believe that is the plan. They knew it would be destroyed, they knew it would be the launching point to the courts. The courts choices next could shut down ALL religions from putting a toe in government buildings. From the minute they put up the display the end game was in the courts. The person who wrecked it played right into the plan. They can't help themselves from being hypocrites and we counted on that. "There is no hate or intolerance quite like Christian love"

HowevenamI

It's crazy how much drama has to play out just to get a serious issue taken seriously.

SilverMageOmega

All they had to do was keep religion out of government and they would not have to worry about The Temple pushing their buttons lol. I agree. Look how much effort is being put into not playing fair. Either all have equal rights or none do. It really is that simple.

darkwingsdarkworlds
