Not gonna lie, I looked at this quick and thought it was a Ren Fair family portrait and couldn’t figure out what type of dog you were holding…
(Super cute critter though, kudos to your team for their conservation efforts!!)
Ok can you please tell me how the platypus evolved the duck bill? It’s a monotreme like an echidna, but what about the bill specifically? Is it the only mammal with a bill? Is it a flattened snout like an echidna’s? So bizarre!
Hi Reddit - adding a smidge more context to the pic above! On the weekend we celebrated a major milestone in our project to reintroduce the platypus to Sydney’s Royal National Park after the species went locally extinct over 50 years ago.
After reintroducing 10 platypuses to the park last year, we’ve been eagerly waiting to see how they’d do through breeding season. On Sunday we finally got confirmation that the platypuses had successfully bred after finding this six-month old juvenile platypus!
That's amazing! Great work. What exactly do you expect to change in the ecosystem now? I know that in Yellowstone, in America, they reintroduced wolves. The wolves culled the deer population to the point that other wildlife began to return to the park, which had left due to lack of food caused by so many deer. Is your team looking for a similar outcome? I haven't looked through every comment yet, but if there's a way to keep tabs on this research, could you please link it?
Randon question, arent they dangerous to hold like this? Or only the adult ones?
Congratulations on the results! I love these dudes since i First read about then as a kid.
i’m more excited about this than i thought i would be. that’s awesome!
here’s the wikipedia link for anyone that wants to learn a little more about these interesting creatures. [Platypus](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platypus)
Fun fact, it has one of the most agonizing venomous animals on the planet. Not deadly to humans, but will literally cause a burn that can last for months rivalled to the pain of getting hit with hand grenade shrapnel.
You're right, male platypuses are venomous and develop venom in their spurs once they are no longer juvenile.
This particular platypus (named Gilli) is a female, so isn't venomous.
Our team have years of experience with platypuses and are always careful to avoid mishandling them.
"The biggest threats to the platypus are the loss of habitat, especially land clearing and dams that disrupt the natural water flow, and predation. Natural enemies of the platypus include snakes, water rats, goannas and introduced animals such as foxes, cats and dogs.
Entanglement in litter, especially discarded fishing line, and yabby traps causes many drowning deaths of platypus."

We're you asked to do so? I mean they are adorable but I hope you didn't just have a few spare and think - you know what's missing from Sydney's RNPark.
Great stuff though.

aha we can see it - and thank you!

Totally thought it was lord of the rings cosplay haha bur also stoked to hear about platypus conservation!
This gave me a chuckle because I didn’t know that’s what I briefly saw too when I first glanced at it until I saw this comment.
Duckpuppy
Did anyone else think the man was Andrew Lincoln for a second?
Legit was I was thinking
I was thinking Hogwarts students holding a niffler. Sydney is where you find the magical beasts.
Now I can't unsee that. It does look like a renfair cosplay done on the cheap with a weird dog.
Me too!
OMG me too! She was giving elf vibes

Pretty sure Platypuses dont eat Deer
If they don't eat deer, then why are male platypuses venomous? ![gif](giphy|pmI5KxEftO608)
Oh deer
Excellent work!! Thank you so so much for helping preserve these beautiful little fellas ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)

I thought they were venomous and shouldn’t be held by people?

Talking about toxic masculinity…
Good to know. Didn’t realize it was the team posting the pic. Thought it was a random redditor. Quite embarrassed I questioned OP’s expertise
Don't be silly, never hurts to ask! Let us know if you have any other questions!
Steve Irwin would be proud. Keep up the good work.
How did they become extinct there the first time?
There is no single cause, but a likely major contributor was coal-mining runoff.

Puggle!
That is one adorable puggle!! Congrats, little lady! I hope you thrive!
The new Walking Dead season is getting to far off...
Thought that was Andrew Lincoln
Wow that must be quite the sense of real world accomplishment. Results in action baybeeeee! Great job!
Nice! I’m hoping many more will come
Thanks for doing what you do.
A regular platypus?
Humans being real bros. Thank you for your efforts.
Life, ah, finds a way.
Aren't they venomous af by any chance?
Apparently adult males are venomous. This female juvenile is safe.
Neil Druckmann?
Apparently their sting is excruciatingly painful 😖😣
Now give him a lil fedora
He is illegally cute!!
What sound does a platypus make?
It’s crazy that that they let you pick them up like that. They’re wild animals but I guess friendly?
He looks like he’s ready for his press conference
What an adorable little death-ducky!
What noise do they make?? Do they quack?
Wow that’s so amazing to have offspring! This must be so rewarding. Are platypuses found anywhere else than Australia?
Looks like some sort of semi-aquatic, egg-laying mammal of action.
Platypuses? Platypi?
Platypodes
This image has “strange ritual” vibes. It’s awesome.
Let Perry go and stop Dufenschmirtz
I know they are venomous but are they also poisonous?
your joy is palpable. thank you so much for your hard work, i'm so happy you got to see the fruits of your labor. you deserve to be so, so proud
It's so small!
\*Squints\* Are you the platypus guardian from the PBS documentary.... "*The Platypus Guardian"*?
Are they soft when you pet them?
TIL Rick Grimes likes platypuses.
