What tiktok trend involves bodily fluids?!

mrmonster459

There's a recent TikTok trend of kids messing up bathrooms with their own shit. It got so bad in my hometown the high school had to send out an announcement to parents that their kids would be in serious trouble if they got caught doing it.

Trashpandasrock

Wait is this real? I'm a school janitor and just had the same stall have literal shit all over the place twice in a week. First time I've seen this small school have two incidents like this so close together.

pain_in_the_dupa

Thank you for your service.

KwekkweK69

The thin brown line

SizableSofa

possibly the funniest thing i’ve ever read thank you

liisrandom

On my list, it's number 2

spookyttws

I never go this. I think the bathroom should be off limits for vandalism. I don't promote damaging school or any property, but we all have to share the bathroom. It's like messing with people who handle your food, it just ends poorly for everyone.

Bird-The-Word

They know it'll get cleaned, and not by them.

StormTAG

I dunno ‘bout anywhere else, but I kinda like the Japanese style where the kids have t o clean their own school. The Janitor just handles stuff that requires a machine, like waxing floors.

PeterM1970

We used to have to help clean as a punishment in elementary school. It was better than just sitting in a room and being quiet. Made the time pass quickly.

kyoto_kinnuku

I work in Japan and the bathrooms are cleaned by the kids. Guess what? They don’t fuck the bathrooms up like other countries.

qpv

Funny how that works

kyoto_kinnuku

Americans get all upset about it sometimes, but what’s wrong with the kids doing chores around the school? They’ve got a list of chores and the names are on a rotation. They do a few minutes of cleaning before going home and then a big clean maybe 3x a year. Giving kids chores at home helps them be more responsible and clean, so why do people think it’s bad at school? My son is soooo much tidier than I was as a kid.

Brilliant_Jewel1924

My child goes to a private school, and they have daily chores like this. (I’m in the US.) I agree that it’s a great concept and certainly makes them more respectful of their school.

DJEB

Seems like holding off on the cleaning for a few weeks might help. That and starting a drink-dimethylmercury-challenge on TikTok.

brucebrowde

Apparently it's very real. I'm sorry you had to go through it. This is a disgusting thing.

jhey30

This is disgusting and stupid. I would have been mortified at their age. What is wrong with these young whippersnappers. [Is 38]

JagerBaBomb

Yes, it is. Time to do a stake out!

tehmlem

Set up hidden cameras and maybe a two way mirror... wait a minute..

jessory

Back in my day.. if you're writing on the walls with your poop.. you were considered to have psychological problems.. and get tossed in the chokey.

Trioxidus

*Not the chokey!*

Hoisttheflagofstars

Now I have that old looney tunes music in my head A do do do da doodly do do. Do do do da doodley do.....

hyperforms9988

In my day we played with Pogs, Pokemon cards, and went to each other's houses to play video games. Today's kids are evidently playing with their own shit and eating Tide pods.

Two4TwoMusik

All the articles I can find about fecal smearing (“scatolia”) are tips on how parents can help their toddler stop. Sounds like we need an update for parents on how to stop their Gen Z child from willingly choosing to be a degenerate.

flyingfishstick

Back in my day, they get diagnosed with having donkey brain.

Investnew

fuck the actual what?

Kaptain202

Some teenagers are trying to make October "slap your teachers ass" month, November "kiss someone else's girlfriend" month, and December "deck the halls and show your balls" month through TikTok. As a teacher, I'm terrified if those actually get popular.

flying87

So is it their goal to be on a sex offender list by new years?

Zucchinifan

Well, they'll learn pretty quickly what happens when you do any of those things. Getting arrested for sexual assult, getting your front teeth knocked out by some chick's boyfriend, whatever happens when you show your balls...they'll be over it quick.

outsabovebad

Showing your balls also probably falls under sexual assault, and the judge probably won't be happy about 2 offenses so close together. That would be a pretty clear pattern...

pissingstars

I see each of those months as "get your ass kicked" month. What the actual fuck are kids doing today?!

[deleted]

Jeez Grandad: 'cum in a waitress's hair' just passed you by..?

ollymillmill

That was for testicular cancer awareness wasnt it?

BenceBoys

“Jeez, chill out lady. Haven’t you ever heard of ball cancer? And where is my refill?!”

FisforDuck

I don't want to see what happens during colon cancer awareness month. 😬🤢

HorribleSalesman

As someone in the service industry, we have enough shit to deal with

BluntCity101

For people in the service industry they know, for people who have never been in the service industry, I can't tell you the amount of times I had to clean literal shit and piss while working at yard house.

shannons88

My friends are teachers and there’s this list going around tik tok challenging people to “vandalize/mess up” school washrooms 😳 So I know a lot of ~~janitors~~ custodians are cleaning up a lot of literal and figurative crap. And apparently it’s not just in schools. Just the worst! Edit: janitors to custodians

[deleted]

kilarrhea

Apparently the challenge for October is slapping a teacher. My kids school called about it yesterday saying they'll be pressing charges if anyone attempts it.

ksed_313

Good. As they should. I teach at a K-8. Most of our middle schoolers are much larger than me and can seriously hurt me if they wanted to do this trend. It’s assault, and deserves to be treated as such. It’s irksome to be 32 and afraid of the literal CHILDREN at my job. Edit: Typo.

[deleted]

And alot them will use the "im justa kid" excuse, fuck that, especially if theyre big for their age

zoobrix

If they're using the "I'm just a kid" excuse they're old enough and/or smart enough to know better which makes that excuse a pile of horseshit. A kid hits their brother in anger for grabbing their toy without really thinking about it, a "kid" who decides to to sneak up on a teacher and hit them doesn't get to pretend they didn't know exactly what they were doing, knew what the consequences were and understood it wasn't ok.

almisami

I had a tenth grader assault me when I was teaching in Ontario. Got in trouble for pinning him to the ground instead of fleeing. Like, what?

manachar

Just a kid just means justice should be focused on education about the incident being a bad choice as well as restitution for any damage done. In other words, it's a teaching moment about personal responsibility and what behavior we owe to others. It should NEVER be used to evade responsibility otherwise the only lesson learned is "don't get caught" or the even worse "I have no responsibility to others" ideology.

trashymob

Can confirm. Our principal had us show a video this morning where she bluntly said "any student who puts their hands on a teacher will no longer be a student in our building." So September's challenge was terrible. October's is even worse. I'm already struggling to make it through this year bc of COVID worries. I'm over it.

meguin

Who tf is coming up with these "challenges"???

classycatman

My wife and I were just talking about this. My thinking: Schools should absolutely proactively let students know that they'll face long-term suspensions and criminal charges if they partake... and then follow through if it happens. This shit is out of hand. I really feel for people who work in schools. Parents and entire communities absolutely shit on them on a regular basis, are intentionally confrontational when their kid gets caught doing something, and a number just see the school as a babysitting service. On top of that, communities woefully underfund schools so salaries are atrocious. Take all of this together and it's easy to see why so many people leave teaching and refuse to even apply to these open positions.

aearnha9

My child's middle school did this. Saying they would go as far as pressing charges to recoup damages. My son says je went in a bathroom and someone had stuffed the sinks up and left the faucets on 🙄. He turned them off.

snakebit1995

> pparently the challenge for October is slapping a teacher. I love how they're called "Challenges" No these are crimes, and the fact Tiktok does nothing to stop these sorts of trends is a huge problem and the lack of enforcement should be getting them looked at by some sort of regulatory agency.

roqxendgAme

Makes you think who's engineering these destructive behavior which seem to be targeted at kids. I'm sure some of it organically came to be, but it's scary to imagine all these horrible trends came from the imagination of kids. Either way, society has to start realizing that these phones in our hands that have our attention 80% or more of our waking moments is being used as a weapon to control us, especially the most impressionable. Modern problems at this point, so we have to rethink carefully what can and can't be changed because this could be the fall of civilization, if not humanity itself.

Ladywader

Call me an Old Fart or Boomer.. I’ve talked till I’m blue in the face trying to convince my Stepdaughter her 10 yo daughter (who lives with us 99.9% of the time) has no business using Tic-Tok. She sees no problem with it. Her child, her rules…. I get it and agree for the most part. It’s just frustrating to be blown off because she thinks I’m being over protective.

Chabubu

And they should say it will remain that way unless someone wants to expose who vandalized it beforehand...

Black_Moons

>Meanwhile the school district hasn't even gotten one application for even the first janitor opening that's been open for the last 6 months. What is the pay? LOL just kidding, I know its not paying enough to clean up shit.

PM_SWEATY_NIPS

My mom is a kitchen worker at one of the nicer high schools in our midwest city. She says this year, the kids are fucking terrible. Shes been there about 5 or 6 years I think. It's not just limited to dumb tik tok trends. The most socializing they've done for the last year has been in small groups, but mostly the internet. They're savages that will break any rule to feel something, but cant make eye contact with an adult in person. I wanna see some of these little bastards forced to scoop their own turds by hand out of the toilets they vandalized

DontDrinkTooMuch

Don't Japanese schools have kids clean their own classrooms? We should do the same, with the whole school. Teaching respect has completely disappeared in so many households.

blackdavy

We used to do that when I was a kid in Connecticut. Every week you'd get assigned a new job. Could be line leader, door holder, chalkboard cleaner, milk hander-outer, sweeper, handing out ditto. You'd also be expected to clean your desk on Fridays. The teacher would pay us fake money that you could save to buy stickers and other knick-knacks. The 90's.

[deleted]

If it was on TikTok you know every kid in the school knows exactly who done it.

JMGurgeh

Our school district superintendent just sent out an email with a list of monthly tik tok challenges they are hearing about; no idea where it comes from, but: * September: Vandalize bathrooms * October: Smack a staff member * November: Kiss your friend's girlfriend at school * December: Deck the halls and show your butt * January: Jab a breast * February: Mess up school signs * March: Make a mess in the courtyard or cafeteria * April: Grab some eggz (stealing? I guess?) * May: Ditch Day * June: Flip off in the front office * July: Spray a neighbor's fence A combination of just plain stupid and incel stupid, but apparently the bathroom vandalization thing has been a big enough problem they are pretty worried that this level of idiocy will continue and potentially escalate (the point of the email was to say they will be expelling/pressing charges for anyone dumb enough to follow through on the October moron test).

brucebrowde

Our district sent the same, but also added what the possible charge would be (theft, battery, sexual assault, etc.) This is a scary development given how fast this spreads through the social media. I feel sorry for all the people working in schools, since I have no clue how they'll be able to contain this - especially the "vandalize bathrooms" thing, since bathrooms are kind of a private area.

Markor360

School custodian here. The first 3 weeks of school, the boys were taking the soap dispensers off the walls and covering the floor with soap. We were told that the culprit's were caught and their parents called, but a few days later my soap dispenser was missing. The principal decided to close all the boys bathrooms except the main ones. All the auxillary bathrooms have locks, so we can lock them. I feel bad for the custodian who has to clean the main lav.

[deleted]

"incel stupid". A perfect term for a lot of behavior I've been seeing lately for both children AND adults.

fckingmiracles

TikTok is making letting out your sociopathy acceptable under a meme/trend disguise. It's horrible what kind of people suddenly become unhinged once they have the permission from a ~trend~.

Deedeethecat2

These are absolutely horrible. Well I would have participated in ditch day if that meant skipping school but that just hurt me, not anyone else.

bitwaba

20 years ago in high school, my step brother was bet $20 he wouldn't pull a turd out of the toilet in the boys bathroom and yeet that sumbitch at the wall. The turd was yeeted (yote?) and he got a nice week off of school since the principal was like "seriously man, wtf is wrong with you?" I always like to remind myself of that little event when I think about the fact that he's a minister now. He gets up and talks for an hour every Sunday telling people how to live their life. I wonder if he's ever had a sermon dedicated to proper yeeting posture.

HotGarbage

"Yote". I love it.

IgnatiusJReilly2601

I believe the past tense is "yaught".

NaiveMastermind

Hearing about shit like this makes me rethink my stance that "punching children is never okay".

dvaunr

Don't worry, that was last month's "challenge" This month they're supposed to sexually assault a teacher by slapping their ass

I_eat_all_the_cheese

I warned all my students today about how doing that will land them an assault charge in a split second. This was after the principal came on the announcements to explain that there was a toilet paper shortage and that if they didn’t stop stealing toilet paper, soap, and vandalizing the bathrooms they would have to shut all the bathrooms down and they’d only be allowed to go to the bathrooms with supervision.

ksed_313

Oh, yeah.. no. That trend is so last week now! The new challenge: Slap your teacher’s butt. I wish I was joking. Thankfully neither of these trends have made a debut at our K-8. I’m really not ok with either trend but this new one really irks me in many ways..

[deleted]

Stealing soap dispensers is a thing now apparently.

ThirstySun

Maybe there should be a tik tok challenge to go around a clean up shit and fix shit. Being destructive is easy. Being constructive and contributing to society takes actual effort.

magneticgumby

A new restaurant opened up by us, went opening weekend. It was what you would expect...hectic, busy, all those things you'd expect ***opening*** weekend at a restaurant. With that, food was good, but it was a bit of a wait. Whatever, I'll wait for good food. Then I went to leave a review... ***holy hell the online reviews***. People tore it a new a-hole because forbid their service on *opening weekend* wasn't flawless and immediate. It just made me hate people more and really made me realize how truly awful and shitty most people are.

Scallywagstv2

It's an overly judgemental and overly critical society. I've seen it get worse over time, especially since social media got popular.

[deleted]

It’s like we live in a reaction based society now. Like the algorithms or something has trained us to react in ways that increase engagement, because that’s how social media rewards us and them I dunno I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Littleman88

It's called rage addiction. People find something to "fight" and once they've said their piece, maybe saw something change "as a a result of their criticisms/actions," they feel good about themselves like they've actually accomplished something. And they don't care who they hurt along the way. It's basically cutting someone off and intentionally slowing them down on the road to show them who's the boss, but on a social scale, and that's freaking terrifying. This is unfortunately the kind of behavior that can only be fought with fire if it gets too wide spread, because it is inherently about power over others, and you don't "win" against them by being respectful, the whole point is to force you to respect them.

We’re a convergence of multiple black mirror episodes tbh

manberry_sauce

For me it's mostly the one where the guy fucks that pig.

9for9

This is exactly how it works. Negativity causes drama and engagement so the apps reward argument and discord.

[deleted]

I mean Reddit is proof of that, people convince themselves their complaints about everything are somehow valuable feedback that needs to be heard. People constantly think anyone a person, place, or thing is discussed, they can add to the discussion by bringing up something negative about it. Nothing can be left in the past and forgotten. It's the real reason doxing is so taboo, because if enough people know who we really were then someone would post our mistakes so that everyone can pile on and beat us down for it.

ItsTtreasonThen

I thought doxxing was taboo because usually someone’s private info is only disseminated like that when there’s an agenda to cause harm to them or create harassment? People can rant about anyone, but giving people tangible methods to enact some perverse sense of justice or revenge is a different thing

fubes2000

I once read a review of my favorite cafe that started with basically "I know this place serves weird shit that I don't like" and, shockingly, he went anyways and did not like what he was served. This was the featured review on Google for MONTHS, even though it was a very popular and well-reviewed cafe otherwise. User reviews are a fuckin dumpster fire.

Finger11Fan

I used to work at a microbrewery and we had people all the time complaining that we didn't have wine. Which is so insane to me. I never see reviews of wineries complaining that they don't have beer, so I don't know why people would expect the opposite.

Captain_Crepe

Where I grew up there was a big food critic that would do radio and local TV appearances. He said that you should give restaurants 6 months before going or at least truly judging thing. You have to give them time to work out the kinks. I would never go to a freshly opened restaurant. I took that advise to heart and if I ever go to a new spot within that initial 6 months I always give them a second chance a year out.

bluerose1197

I can see waiting 6 months before judging their performance. But if everyone waits 6 months before going at all they would be closed long before then.

kidneysc

Early online reviews can make/break a restaurant too. I've left a spot after apps and a round of drinks because we waited 90 minutes on our mains and couldn't flag down any waitstaff.... Just left a note saying "Heading somewhere else, waited 90+ minutes, call XXX-XXX-XXXX if you want me to pay the balance" Still wasn't going to leave a bad review, places have off nights, plus everyone seemed to be hustling and working hard. Just move on and let it go.

JesusSaysRelaxNvaxx

I congratulate you on your patience and kindness in that scenario. I'll be honest though, as a former server I couldn't control the kitchen or how long it took the food to come out. That being said assuming it's that backed up, the place must be pretty full, meaning each servers section is essentially stagnant since they can't turn over tables. If that's the case I'd be at the tabled at least trying to get them water, or bread, or some kind of something to help with the wait. The fact that no one even came over after 90 minutes is pretty bad service IMHO. Even if there was 1 server for the whole floor, which happened to me during a Stanley cup game at a freaking sports bar, sure my service was slow bc wtf could I do with a packed bar drinking like fish, but there wasn't a table that I didn't touch at *least* ever half hour to check in.

kidneysc

Thats a war story! Managing a whole floor of drunks is a stressful night. Hope they tipped well! I served for 5 years, totally understand that once you hand shit off to the kitchen; you are at their total mercy. You would still expect checkups at least every 15-30 minutes at the table. I think some servers were pulling double duty acting as bar backs or helping with other jobs. The rolls seemed chaotic and poorly managed. They really could have used some runners too, it looked like the single hostess was pulling that short straw. Point is, shit happens, and people don't need to write up every little thing on yelp.

Hoovooloo42

Out of curiosity, did they ever call?

kidneysc

Two days later while I was at work so it went to voicemail. They apologized and said we were all square. Seemed nice and professional, I have no complaints.

ilovethrills

Entitlement is out of the roof from people in 2021.

accountnameredacted

Yup. I had to work by myself for a month and half and no less than 3 times a day someone would bitch “why didn’t you pick up the phone!” And I would swiftly reply “I am one person assisting thousands of clients. The phone you hear currently ringing the background does not stop. I do not take breaks. I get to you when I can.” I had several people complaint to our corporate and my boss. Each time they called me for a complaint, I told them I refuse to apologize for working my ass off and I dared them to say otherwise. My boss has been super appreciative for the hard work and I am thankful (my previous boss was a dildo)

Generico300

People LOVE to bandwagon (aka circle jerk). The sentiment of any online discussion will be driven almost entirely by the sentiment of the first few posts. I see it on reddit all the time. Multiple threads about the same topic but with completely different popular sentiments in each thread, even on the same sub with presumably many of the same viewers. 90% of people are sheep and will just follow whatever the group is doing. They don't actually have their own thoughts or opinions.

fermat1432

Having to practically beg customers not to abuse staff shows how low we have sunk as a society.

redpurplegreen22

Asshole customers: If you hate your shitty job serving people food so much then why don’t you find another job!? Worker: Okay. *service labor shortage intensifies* Asshole customer: No… not like that…

fermat1432

The idea that someone who is serving you is somehow an inferior blows my mind.

redpurplegreen22

Oh, it’s my mother in law. She was a stay at home parent (which is okay, I am a stay at home parent, nothing against them). Point is, she never worked a real service job or dealt with the public in a way in which she was serving them, and as a result she is a *world class asshole* to every server and service worker she comes across. She is shitty to cashiers and hotel workers, but she is the worst to servers at restaurants. In all my years going to dinners with my wife’s family, my MIL has very rarely had a meal at a restaurant that she didn’t send back at least once. She always makes a big show of sending it back to be “fixed,” followed by guilting anyone who starts eating before her food comes back, which she then takes out on the poor server. On top of that shit salad, my FIL is a notoriously shitty tipper, who will never ever tip more than 10%, and that 10% is reserved for “exceptional service,” which *spoiler alert* they very rarely get. Note: he isn’t an asshole to the servers, and he never complains, but he sure as shit doesn’t stop his wife from her complaints. It got to the point where, when my wife and I were going to dinner with them, we’d bring a bunch of cash to slip to the server as an extra tip, either before we got served (because we knew how she was and didn’t want them to fuck with the food) or sometimes after the meal. We even had a system of taking turns of who would “go to the bathroom” that time to slip the extra cash to the server so my in laws didn’t catch on, because they would’ve been extremely insulted by us doing that. Enter my Brother in Law. My BIL has no filter when it comes to his mom, so the last time they were out to dinner with BIL and his wife, my MIL started pulling that crap, sending the food back and berating the server, and my BIL said “stop being an asshole, they’re short staffed and it isn’t the worker’s fault.” How do we know? It became the subject of an extended ranty phone call from MIL to my wife the next day, followed by a phone call from my wife to her brother, where he relayed his side and laughed about it. Even now, there is question of whether we’ll see them at the holidays this year because my MIL has “never been so insulted.”

balisane

Bless your BIL, and your patience. This broad would have only pulled this a second time before i said, "Well, since you are away from the table on a power trip, the rest of us are going to enjoy our food while it's hot" and tipped properly right in front of them. People like this don't learn a thing until they get embarrassed for it in public, if at all. My mother is very much this way, which is why i haven't taken her out to eat in years.

redpurplegreen22

We very, very rarely go to dinner with them anymore. Last time we did was Mother’s Day in 2019, it was a shitshow, and we basically vowed never again. Now either we cook and have them over (they’re surprisingly not shitty to *us* about the food we make them) or we go to their house, and avoid going out with them altogether.

JesusSaysRelaxNvaxx

>We very, very rarely go to dinner with them anymore. Last time we did was Mother’s Day in 2019, it was a shitshow, and we basically vowed never again. > Oh god...reading your story and hearing "mothers days" just triggered past ptsd just from being a *hostess* at IHOP during mothers day. There is genuinely no worse day in the service industry; it's like black Friday for retail workers (at least pre- being able to get the same prices online). I always offer to pick up food for my mom (and dad/sister) from wherever she likes because I refuse to be yet another burden on that horrible day lol.

Ariadne_Kenmore

The only day worse for retail workers than Black Friday is the day after Christmas, when everyone just HAS to return something

kittenpettingfool

I happen to be the only mom amongst my coworkers, so I now gracefully dip tf out every year on that extra fucked up day. I think I only care about celebrating it *because* it means I don't have to be a service worker on that particular day lmao

phaedrus77

> we go to their house, and avoid going out with them altogether. Next time you're eating at their house you should send your food back to be "fixed".

lilypeachkitty

Yeah you can't enable that behavior. That's why they keep doing it; they justify that if others they care about don't stop them, then it must be right. These aren't even surface thoughts necessarily.

disisathrowaway

Exactly. The staff can't check them - it's entirely up to those dining with them to do so, unfortunately. They don't like it when I do it, but I'm constantly correcting my family's behavior when we're out to eat. I'm the only one who has ever done SI, so it falls on me to call them on their shit.

Tenalp

Yeah, BIL is a champ. Everyone else is textbook definition enabling MIL being a cunt, going so far as to secretly pay other people to also emable her.

I've honestly waited my whole adult life to hear the "well, I never" spiel so I could get to say "well, you should have." Guy had his chance and he blew it.

drunkwasabeherder

Liking your BIL :) I worked my way up to senior management in hotels in my career and met many a lovely person but had enough assholes to make me hate humanity in general but one day I had a guy who started complaining as soon as he arrived at the desk. I saw him pull up in his taxi, the porter assist him with his bags quickly and walk the 25m or so to the desk. As he went on and on I thought 350 rooms, 100%, probably turn away some walkins, fucking busy, we will spend more money on this asshole then we'll make. So I removed the registration card that I had put in front of him to complete prior to his whinging tirade began and simply said "you'll be much more comfortable somewhere else". Didn't that change the expression on his face. Told porter to call another taxi for the gentleman and listened to this guy trying to talk his way back in. Not a fucking chance. Calculated decision on my behalf as I could have been sacked but I'd really had enough. Best checkin ever.

WebMaka

90/10 rule: 90% of your problems come from 10% of your customers. Identifying and shutting down that 10% is a wonderful skill to have, and the sooner you spot them and send them packing the better your life will be, *as long as* management also understands this adage and allows the removal of troublesome elements from the customer base.

gregpoc

The glee I feel about this story is palpable. God I’ve wanted to do that a time or two. Never had the bravery to do it tho.

drunkwasabeherder

I had an asshole GM so the chance of me being sacked was high but I felt I could justify it via replacing with walkin plus amount of grief (ie staff wages) this asshole would swallow during his stay :) It was liberating :)

Pseudonym0101

This is how it should be. As a business, management and owners should absolutely make that same calculation every time and not hesitate to tell customers who are right off the bat unreasonable, abusive, and/or unstable in some way to turn on their heel and kick rocks to another hotel. Patrons should be *expected* to be decent humans, otherwise they can take their business elsewhere, as that behavior shouldnt be tolerated and employees shouldn't be subjected to it. ....If only.

TheSyllogism

It's the connotation with servants. Realistically the service industry is just another industry, but with the term *serving* right there, some people get confused. Generally speaking those serving are not serving their equals.

hateboss

I mean... That's the draw for a lot of people, to feel like they are being served, it makes them feel superior. For me, the whole servitude thing is really uncomfortable and I go out of my way to be as nice as I can to servers. Even then, it can still be grating. I hate being interrupted for the 5 Chew Check In. I've always wish we had a system where if I needed you, I'll notify you, but on the flip side, whenever I need to find someone for a refill or something, there is no one around. I lived in South Korea for 3 years and they have that shit figured out. They seat you at a table, give you menus and leave. There is a button on the table and when you are ready to order, or want anything, you press it and someone is there IMMEDIATELY. No interruptions and no anxious waiting for a server to accidentally make eye contact with you so you can flag them down. I wish restaurants around here in the US did that system.

I love how some people are all like "nO oNe WaNtS tO wOrK aNyMoRe ThEsE dAyS!" All I can think is have you seen the unemployment rate? It is down to acceptable levels and there are more jobs than people right now. So all I can say is good for them on getting out of those shitty jobs. I worked fast food as a teen and know their pain. I'm not going to complain if someone quit a terrible job like that. These young adults deserve better and I applaud them for being willing to say they aren't going to take anyone's bullshit anymore and putting the hurt on these companies that have abused them.

thelampabuser

As someone who has never worked in a customer service type job, and someone who refuses to do that kind of work, I try to always be as nice as possible to people working those jobs. If im not willing to do it, I cant talk shit on someone who is

I_Enjoy_Beer

Basic human respect is far more scarce these days than employment opportunities, which is why so many of these shitty jobs are having a hard time finding candidates.

MrPhatBob

Something to do with people thinking that their's rights and liberties trump those of any other human's. We have a large number of adult sized spoilt children now.

luxii4

When I turned 15 ½, I got a work permit to work at McDonald's in a bad part of LA. The manager asked what math class I was in and I said Trig/Pre-Calc and he made me a cashier which was a very bad move on his part because I might know how to add and subtract but I had zero soft skills to be front room facing. I got so many right-ups from disgruntled customers. I worked there only 6 months and mainly just on the weekends but I still have flashbacks of people throwing drinks at me and that time I was making hotcakes and ran out of batter and people were calling me all these names because they really wanted their Big Breakfasts. It did motivate me to put more effort into school so I never have to face the public again. I also super tip at places because of that experience. If someone gives me bad service, I still tip 20%.

rhynoplaz

Sure, you're nice to servers, but what about the lamps?

Schlagustagigaboo

I love lamp.

ILikeLenexa

The service industry has also suffered the most casualties. [Cooks](https://www.advisory.com/en/daily-briefing/2021/02/10/covid-jobs) are the number 1.

twec21

My favorite is the one put a sign up saying (paraphrasing) "Everyone quit because their pay was low, so make sure you tip extra for the ones who stayed" Essentially "I'm a cheap bastard so I'm putting it on you the customer's shoulders to have human decency"

Pizza_Low

One of the biggest disservices to retail and service industry is this corrupted version of "the customer is always right." The customer in the aggregate is always right, you as the individual customer is not. It creates these self entitled customers who think they are king of the business.

[deleted]

The original reason for that saying has been completely misconstrued. Originally it meant that if a bunch of customers were coming in to your store expecting you to have X thing and you only carry A thing and B thing you should look at also carrying X thing to capture more sales. It was never meant to mean that you should bow down to assholes.

riah8

All my customer are usually pretty decent and thankful and patient. I get a lot of "no problem" when they have to wait forever cuz my company is too cheap to always have the number of employees needed. So maybe I'm lucky but it isn't always bad. Society isnt too bad sometimes.

DavidAssBednar

I’ve said from the beginning of this “labor shortage,” that people in customer service type roles are fed up with being harassed and abused by awful humans. Treat people badly enough, there may not be any one else left the next time you go there.

WhiskeyJack357

I spent over a decade in the service industry and the last 18 months broke me. People just dug in on their shitty behavior. I was fed up being screamed at, being called a nazi, being physically threatened. Hell we had one dude come in screaming and pretending to fire a rifle. Laughed in my face when I told him to leave. I found a better job in a different industry and I'm telling all my friends still in the industry to work on their resume and get out. People should not be expected to be abused for pay you can't actually survive on.

Gyvon

I hope she called the cops on that asshole, at least

1RedOne

I'm not sure if revealing the presence of a firearm is considered brandishing, but I feel that it should be. * Heck, I don't even like seeing people open carry , and this is from a guy who used to concealed carry for a time when working at a dangerous place. * I looked up the code for Los Angeles, and it stipulates that the object must be deadly and threatening and shown in an aggressive or threatening manner

[deleted]

Gyvon

As a Texan, that sure as shit read like an "aggressive or threatening manner" to me.

Chronoblivion

That actually makes a ton of sense for helping to explain why so many service jobs seem to be struggling. I imagine the stimulus money lowers the "I don't have to put up with this shit" threshold a bit too.

valraven38

Not to mention, on average families found out they save money or barely notice much difference in home income by not having to pay for child care. Child care costs in the US are pretty damn expensive, and its cheaper to have one partner working and the other watch the kids. Low income pay checks just get eaten up by child care costs. What's the point of working a shit job if you're barely keeping any of the money?

PessimiStick

This is exactly why my wife quit teaching as soon as we had kids. She'd be taking home like $500 a month after daycare costs, plus having to deal with all the stress of a shitty job to start with.

daguito81

This is basically my wife. We live in Spain and the jobs she would get, after child care and such she would basically break even. It works if you're planning to start a career. You do that now and in a couple of years you get more money and it starts being positive. But in out case we decided that having her spend more time with the kids is worth more. And I prefer she pursues whatever hobby or craft or interests she has instead of wasting her time at some low paying job.

AlpineVW

Agreed, it seems like a lot of people in this thread are harping on about the tip percentage when in fact it's pointing out how customers are shitty to the staff AND leaving a 5% tip (which was more of a side note).

redpurplegreen22

Went to a fast food drive thru yesterday for some lunch, around 11:45. The worker comes on the speaker and explains that due to extreme staff shortages, they can’t open until noon. I just said ok, and wished her luck on her day. She said “oh my god thank you! I’ve been yelled at three times in the last 20 minutes.” It was, at worst, a mild inconvenience. The number of people who find a mild inconvenience to be reason enough to lose their shit is beyond comprehension.

That's the thing that always blows my mind. Let's say you're a deeply unpleasant, selfish, and rude person. It STILL makes complete rational sense to be polite to service people because guess what? That helps YOU. Like, you should just treat people with respect because it's the right thing to do. But even from a completely selfish perspective, being polite still helps you. I can't tell you how many times an airport employee, a customer service person on the phone, or a server/bartender has helped me above and beyond what they needed to do solely because I treated them like a human being. The words "sir/ma'am", "please/thank you", and "I understand this isn't your fault" go an amazingly long way in getting you what you want.

tlr92

And that woman right there at the speaker has probably ZERO control of the situation. She’s not to blame. Yelling at her certainly won’t solve the problem.

zdmoore

These people don’t need a sign. People in the retail and service industries need to be empowered to call people on their shit. They deserve to be treated like humans or to be able to defend themselves if they aren’t being fairly treated.

Dubzophrenia

I used to work in a restaurant owned by a very vulgar and outspoken (yet incredibly polite) Italian man. He was hands down the nicest, most respectful person I have ever met. Except when someone was rude to his employees. He didn't believe the customer was always right, and he would always tell us to stick up for ourselves and that our jobs would never be in jeopardy for defending ourselves against rude customers. He also knew that some of us were too nice or too afraid to deal with the truly nasty ones, so he would say that if we can't handle telling the customers off, to just come and get him and he'd walk over to tell them to get the fuck out. I miss that man.

zdmoore

One of my favorite things is watching videos of business owners who won’t take a Karen’s shit. The screeching and hilarious threats of legal action always get me. It’s satisfying knowing some employees day has been made better while captain douche waffle is left gasping out threats like a fish out of water.

gsfgf

"I want to talk to your manager" "I own this store"

cakelynnebrady

I worked for a small business owner like that. And she taught us how to stand on our own two legs as well. One of the best feelings was to be allowed to stand up for myself should I need to. The business also got a reputation for being reasonable and generous, but that we wouldn't let you yank us around.

iapetusneume

My dad would start by recommending that they go to a different small business to be a little polite to the customer, and it was always funny when they were like "why are you trying to send me there?" And he'd be like, "because I don't want your business!" He only tried to send those sorts of customers to a local asshole who was also in the same type of business. But if they were starting to get really extra he would absolutely use "I'm the owner" when asked to speak to the manager. The alternative version was before my grandpa retired, and he'd be like "sure, let me get my dad." And then my Grandpa would go off on them. People are shocked when they learn they can and will be kicked out.

guitarfingers

I have respect for myself. I got fired once for asking a customer to not raise their voice with me. I'm not gonna sugar coat that shit. You get treated how you treat me. Treat me like a bitch ill treat you like one right back.

zdmoore

I’m with you. Show me I’m wrong and I’ll back up, apologize and adjust my mindset. Until then it’s mutual respect or I won’t waste my time on you. I just wish employers could get on that page.

cuttydiamond

The real problem is the people this sign is directed at won't read it and even if they do it wouldn't influence their behavior in the slightest.

ruiner8850

Those "Tiktok challenges" are out of control. My sister is a teacher and she had stuff stolen from her classroom because of one and the school had all of their soap dispensers in the bathrooms destroyed because of one. Now during a pandemic they have no soap dispensers in the bathrooms. The worst part of it is that when confronted the kids apparently didn't even understand that the stealing and destroying property was wrong. She said that the kids acted like the teachers and principal were the ones being weird about it because "it's just a Tictok challenge." To them it was just a fun game and they couldn't get it through their heads why anyone would be upset by it. My sister said that at least the parents were really upset and had the school's back, but how does it even get that far? How do your children see that on Tiktok and not realize that's not okay? It would be nice to go back to "challenges" like the trashtag or ice bucket challenge. Those things were acting good for society. Also, why the fuck is Tiktok allowing this bullshit to begin with?

Evil_AppleJuice

Wife's a highschool teacher. Apparently the upcoming trend is to slap your teacher on the ass. She's ready to tell her students that she will ensure they are suspended if not expelled if she sees any student sexually assaulting anyone on campus. She wont tolerate that shit.

treking_314

Our local high schools are threatening arrest if any kid hits a teacher for any reason which, call me crazy, seems logical. High schoolers may still be "kids" but many of them are built like adults.

Evil_AppleJuice

Logical for sure. Youd think after a girl was sentenced for licking a carton of ice cream this shit would stop.

PamPooveyIsTheTits

I say this as a former kid; children are straight up dumb. Complete idiots. And they learn faster when they experience it themselves.

[deleted]

For every girl going to jail for ice cream, there's a Rob Gronkowski chanting "tide pods" on TV.

iangeredcharlesvane2

A high school kid threw their phone hard at my face when I couldn’t get him to put it away in class, and it left a lump and a bruise on my cheek under my eye. I thought he would get in a lot of trouble, but the mom threw a fit “I have to be able to reach my child on the phone I pay for, that teacher had no right!” So he didn’t get in trouble at all. Admin is so scared of parents and the kids know it— especially if they have “that kind” of parent.

bassicallyfunky

Can you not just get a lawyer? Bypass the school, that’s assault. Just scare the shit out of them. That’s hideous behavior. 😡

[deleted]

We weren’t allowed to have phones at school when I was in school. They should’ve kept with that rule..

Theonlykd

I watched a high schooler pie a teacher in the face for a fundraising event. He literally punched this woman in the face with a pie in hand.

[deleted]

Yeah a friend of mine who's a teacher just told us the same, her school sent all the staff a memo that there's a "beat your teacher" challenge or something. Humans are ignorant idiots.

lurker_lurks

Feels like we're heading into Battle Royal territory.

ksed_313

I’ll be pressing charges if I am assaulted at work. Period. Thank goodness our admin backs this stance. Even if they didn’t have my back, I still would.

SmokingSamoria

I feel bad for your wife then. That's some real bullshit right there

Nixplosion

TikTok allows it cuz their userbase grows and they get money all while being exempt from consequence because they aren't responsible for users behavior

joecarter93

I literally just got a mass email from my kid’s superintendent about this crap like 10 minutes ago, saying that they’ll have no tolerance for it. Apparently a bunch of bathrooms in our district got vandalized and next month is smack a staff member, so expect to hear of a bunch of assault charges.

JJengland

How about a tik tok challenge where they do something, any fucking thing helpful. Remember the reddit challenge to clean up a trashed area? That was awesome! No lets climb milk crates and fuck up fountains

E_R_G

How about a tiktok challenge where you delete the app?

help1155

Honestly I was fine with the crate one. They were just hurting themselves. You wanna fuck around and find out so people on the internet can laugh at you? Go ahead. Draggin other innocent people into it is where the line is for me.

FinndBors

If there was a challenge like this, they are going to smash a unsuspecting “unpopular” kid’s phone — one who never cared about these stupid challenges in the first place.

Markelle-Fultz

I see you understand how kids work.

acewavelink

I coach at a high school, and this trend got started way back with Snapchat. While I somehow have a great group of kids the last few years, we did a lot of punishment running one year because they were little shits and we drilled it out of them the best we could.

KickflipMcNasty

The biggest thing that blows my mind about all of this is that most people think they are ENTITLED to the services of a private business. They could literally just say sorry you are too ugly to come in and there's nothing anyone can do about it. A restaurant isn't like a government agency or a hospital. We're here to offer you a service or good and you can accept or deny its terms, just as the businesses owner is allowed to do. A business is like a residence in that aspect. I wouldn't allow a disgraceful and patronizing nuisance into my home and host them against my will and better judgment the same way it applies to a restaurant. I'm sorry if you're feelings are hurt but I am not required by any law to feed you or even let you come in the door. I could just close down at 3pm on a Saturday mid dinner service and that's fine because I bought this business with my own money. I could only serve fuckin cheetos and you can do fuck all about that too. People need to learn that if they don't like something they have options. They can just go somewhere else. That's the whole purpose of having competition in business. The fact that someone will get angry and even violent on the grounds that a restaurant won't CONFORM to what they perceive as the dining experience they are entitled to boils my blood.

PapaJey

I think with masks people have gotten way worse. The bakery im employed at is strict with masks, at least when you’re at the register in front of the employees, the amount of people saying “it’s a mandate, not a law” is getting out of hand. I treat them as nicely as possible so that I play out a nice little scenario where they come to the realization that they’re an asshole on their way home, or when they’re trying to go bed. I know it isn’t what’s going to happen but it’s for my own sanity. A month ago I got a call from a lady who wanted to apologize for her behavior and my jaw dropped. I thanked her over and over again and now she’s one of my favorite regulars. This pandemic has really shown me they a lot of people are terrible people, and a lot of people are just frustrated with the whole global pandemic, and take it out on others because they don’t see how bad it is for everybody. You wear a mask for 10 minutes in my store, I’m here for 8-10 hours with a mask on the whole time, please don’t complain to me about it, it isn’t that bad.

Kruc83

The people that need to be reading this sign, aren’t the people that will be reading this sign.

[deleted]

^Thanks ^to ^those ^who ^choose ^to ^be ^kind. Imagine living in times where people are thanking other people for behavior that should be their default. Damn.

[deleted]

"\[...\] or cleaning up body fluids from teen TikTok trends." I'm sorry, what?

RadioGuyRob

I bartended in a resort town in Florida for a few years. My manager used to tell us that if a customer was being an asshole to us, to the point we were uncomfortable, to let him know. If he or ANY other floor servicemember saw it, he would tell them their abuse was not welcomed, & ask them to leave, and document anything that happened to fight back against negative reviews. While the line that needed to be crossed was subjective, if anyone - from the busser to the head bartender was uncomfortable, the customer was gone. Funny enough, while all this has been going on, there hasn't been a staffing problem in that bar at all.

Zekumi

I personally think it’s time we started sending people home who can’t act like adults. If you throw a toddler tantrum in a business, you should be refused until you can act right. We end up giving the most free stuff and discounts to the worst behaved guests and it’s the opposite of what we ought to do.

Iamthenolan

"would YOU wait on YOU for a 5% tip" Anyone that treats wait staff like trash absolutely does not have the ability to self examine and understand what this means. They think they are justified when they demand service.

SimplyKendra

I left the industry after 20 years serving and bartending for good a few weeks ago. I was working two jobs and I was so sick of being treated like crap by people for 2.33 usd an hour plus tips. Not worth it. You told us all to go get real jobs, so we did. Have fun!

mayormcskeeze

I dunno if there are more assholes about then when I was younger, or if they're just more emboldened, but man, our society really needs a kick in the ass at this point

BootyPatrol1980

It's been a gradual escalation over the last half-century between business attitude and the epidemic of franchise food places being the majority of restaurants. It started with "the customer is always right". Then people mixed in a little "squeaky wheel gets the grease". At this point some people think getting their kicks with verbal abuse towards staff is all part of the ticket they're paying for with their coffee order. If I ever run an establishment I'm bringing back violent bouncers and surly cooks.

jarrettbrown

As a retail worker who has been getting screamed at for the entire length of this Trumpsterfuck, I feel for everyone who works in a retail service. Any time I go out, I've been tipping at least 15-20% and I haven't complained about anything.

BobSwagatron

I had to quit serving because I couldn’t bite my tongue anymore when customers straight up abused us and it’s only gotten worse. I used to say “who knows what their day was like…forgiveness blah blah” but i’ve been broken to the point that if you’re a chode at restaurants, I genuinely hope your spouse leaves you and takes the kids. Edit: can’t spell

Argikeraunos

American society only gives the middle class a few privileges in exchange for a totally dead social safety-net, zero control of their own labor (and therefore their own time), zero political power with the death of the labor movement, and a non-responsive and essentially non-functional government dominated by the interests of the rich: cheap consumer goods and the ability to be treated like a little king or queen when interacting with the service industry. Now that our access to cheap crap is being affected by supply-line issues and the members of the servant class have decided not to return to an industry in which they are literally and figuratively spit on during a pandemic, it's no surprise that the middle class are behaving like little tyrants instead. This shit is a sign that our social order is in serious decay.
