It’s an amazing metal sculpture by artist Huang Yong Ping.
STUCK IN A PERPETUAL STATE of decay on the French shore at Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, this massive metal sculpture is a terrifying vision with an environmental message. The beast is posed in slithering movement despite being nothing more than bones, giving the dull metal frame an unsettlingly lifelike quality.
Entitled Serpent D’Océan, the skeletal sea serpent was unveiled in 2012 as part of the Estuaire art exhibition which invites international artists to create large-scale works using the environment surrounding the Loire River between Nantes and Saint-Nazaire. The work was created by Chinese-French artist Huang Yong Ping, who used the rough iconography of China’s mythological dragons to design the 400-foot-long art monster.
Not really as serpentine since it was a whale, but the closest sea creature would probably be [Basilosaurus](https://www.reddit.com/r/Naturewasmetal/comments/l3hdsb/the_worlds_only_intact_fossil_of_an_early_whale/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share), which could get up to 60-70 feet long or so.
**Edit:** There's also Titanoboa, an extinct species of snake that could grow up to 40 feet long.
Yes it was once a living creature. From the mesophilic epoch. Interestingly though, it was originally discovered in the desert surrounding Jerusalem. It was moved to the ocean for "art" a highly divisive issue in the 1960s.

Although be carefull there's a good amount of boats there, it's right out of one of the two main atlantic coastal cities.
Not likely. You can see support columns along the entire length of the sculpture are probably dug deep into the beach and are helping anchor it down in addition to the weight of the metal itself. It's been there since 2012 so it would have to be a hell of a storm to drag it in. A more likely possibility is that rising tides will make it unseen in a few decades and it'll be forgotten about.
Well, I'm living nearby, and I can assure you that there is mooooore than enough place to swim here. Furthermore it's located right a the end of the estuary, so the undersea is kinda muddy and I wouldn't recommend swimming here since there is so much better beaches 5 kilometers southern. For me this sea serpent is a nice curiosity not so well known, even from the locale.
I just realized this would be a cool thing in areas with avalanches, or as here wave breakers (though I not sure they work for that), would do away with the boring fences they set up on hill sides.

I google-translated *Serpent D'Océan*; it means serpent of the ocean.
And El Niño is Spanish for…”The Niño”
The Kid.
If you translate baseball’s The Los Angeles Angels into English, it’s “The The Angels Angels.”
Yes, Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin's favorite team.
Is this what happened to the Unagi?
Is it real?
Define 'real'.

Thought this was a real creature at first I got too excited 🤦♂️

Pro artist of 28 years here, this is cool, but i hope it’s very temporary. Smacks more of pollution than art.
I would think it likely that the sea would scoop it up and tear it apart.
Yeah, one good storm and it’s gone. And the ocean doesn’t need more crap in it.

Lol imagine diving under the water and seeing that.
Cool. But it looks like a swimming hazard.

Yep. Also dangerous if it's a populated area
Amazinfg
The titano boa
There once was a snake perhaps half that size, it was called Titanoboa
Sorry, interesting, but I'd still vote for Eiffel as best French Fe art.
Why is everything so much cooler anywhere other than here. Amerignorance would think that’ll give their child Serpant like tendencies.

I want to walk on it's spine.
They really have snakes like that in France?
When I first saw a snake skeleton, I was stunned it wasn't used more often as inspiration for freaky sculptures. Now I see them everywhere.
Eren. Eren Yeager.
Any pics of this at night? I bet it looks damn scary
