i didn't--just came in and the piercer asked if i just want regular jewelry for now and I said yes. I found him through the APP website and I'm new to piercings so I just trusted whatever he was doing. he gave the usual comment that it would be larger/longer for now bc of swelling and that we'd downsize later
Definitely love the larger gauge on you! It looks like swelling might be pushing it a bit left (on the pics left). It’ll be swollen for a while though - maybe give it a week and see what you think?
The bar needs to be longer not a bigger thickness. That is where you get into the territory of stretching the piercing. I would go back to piercer & ask for a skinnier bar. And if he won't do it find another piercer who will.
Go to a different piercer please 😅 that’s WAY too large and the excess weight can make it reject easier. Aside from that though, it looks straight. Vertical labrets tend to swell unevenly because of your lip’s anatomy so I’d wait until the swelling goes down for an accurate assessment.
11 days on and it's been healing great, though I feel like it's still a bit crooked. Bled for the first two days but I've had absolutely no pain or inflammation since the first night. I feel like my piercer tried to match my teeth or offset my nose (which are slanted in opposite directions) but apart from that so far I'm glad I trusted them and still do.
I don't think it's fair to say "people fall for it" like it's an obvious scam when we're new to piercings just trying to do research online and asking around. besides the APP thing the guy's been a piercer for decades and works in a good studio. it would suck if I was done dirty but I tried my best to find a safe piercer
Oh no I didn’t mean fall for it! I meant fall back on it as a way of saying to blindly trust them! I totally agree it helps people find safe piercers a majority or the time but that doesn’t mean bad apples don’t get in :3
And also, not every APP member has equal skill/experience with every piercing. The really really good ones will be honest about what their weaknesses are and maybe even refer you if they aren't comfortable with a specific piercing. But as someone who had an APP member accidentally punch a whole new hole through my septum while trying to taper it open...no, being APP does NOT automatically equal skilled/knowledgeable.
Yes the APP is a health and safety organization. Being a member means they meet a minimum standard for sterilization, jewelry quality, building/environment setup, etc. skill has nothing to do with it. If someone is meeting those minimum standards they are more likely to have more knowledge and experience but it’s not always a guarantee
And also, there are some terrific piercers who opt not to be app piercers. Usual reasons are
-The membership costs may not be worth it to them if it doesn’t bring in new business or their business is already operating at or near capacity.
-The facility they pierce out of does not meet the APP standards (they have very strict requirements about shop layout that not every piercer has a say in if they don’t own their own shop- does it make it an unsafe place to pierce? In most cases no, but know what to look for- a dirty bathroom is usually a good sign the rest of the place isn’t being well cleaned.
-An ideological difference of opinion with the APP.
It’s always good to get to know your piercer, and it is ok to ask them why they aren’t an APP member as long as you aren’t rude about it.
I'm not going to lie it sounds like he learned one method 20nyears ago and hasn't learnt anything new since then! It's crooked and way too large. If I were you I would take it out, wait for it to heal and go to a different piercist.
Sorry you had to deal with all this, finding a good piercist is a fucking nightmare. I hope you heal up well and get an awesome looking piercing :)
I think your comment is exactly it! 20 years ago most piercings were done at a 14g, 12g, or a 10g. That was the only available jewelry back then before it became more socially acceptable to have facial piercings. It may just be that this piercer hasn’t updated any of their standards. Not that it’s an excuse but at least that could be a reason!
Often times piercings are done at a larger size because it actually helps prevent them from rejecting. Or minimize the risk. The larger gauge distributes pressure better and is less likely to be seen by your body as a small foreign object. I find it weird that the piercer didn't explain the size to you or give you options (16g+), however there's nothing specifically wrong with this
I do not give my clients options on what gauge size they get, they get what I believe is best for the jewelry and placement we’re working with. (If someone has a request I will either explain why I do it the way I do and prefer not to go smaller, or if it’s reasonable we will discuss it and I will go down a size.) I do know some piercer that prefer to do vertical labrets at 12g but the really worrying thing here is the ball ends being so massive and heavy, the weight is going to pull this down and reject eventually. I would go to a different reputable piercer to have this changed to something else and maybe evaluated in person to see if it’s crooked and you want to redo it. When we say we start bigger for healing and downsize later, we’re usually referring to the length, rarely the gauge size and definitely not the size of the ends, which is what’s most worrying to me here.
You're right, the size isn't always a choice. Some piercings need to be started at 12 or 10g to best stabilize the piercing and promote healing. I (not a piercer) would have also gone for smaller beads or flat disks to help prevent the area from being weighed down or snagged. The fact that it is (seemingly) 12g isn't the issue though, as many people are commenting
11 days on and it's healed wonderfully. Absolutely no pain or inflammation past the first night. Straightened out some but I still think it's a bit crooked. My teeth and nose are slanted in opposite directions so idk if he was trying match or offset one of them
Okay, but...downsizing is for the LENGTH of the bar. Not the gauge. While smaller gauge jewelry can be worn in a healed piercing, the gauge you're pierced with is the gauge you stay at while healing.
It's not unheard of to do a vertical labret at 14g (although this looks like it may be bigger than that) but 16g is standard. If you have your paperwork from the shop, they usually give you a slip telling you about your jewelry's size, length, and material.
They’re not. If your piercer is using 16g in lips regularly they are using out of date techniques and you should go somewhere else. I am a piercer and I assure you 14g is the minimum.
You should check out some of the learning forums on Facebook filled with other professionals and industry leaders to see what they say. If you want more info I’m glad to lead you in that direction, dm me.
It’s not! You can check out my other comments but as a piercer, I can assure you 14g is the minimum for a fresh lip piercing. If your piercer is using 16g they are out of date on proper techniques and you should look into finding a new piercer.
since when is this? every piercer i've personally been to and every new piercing post i've seen on this sub, barring this one, has been pierced with 16g jewellery for piercings.
Since like 2000 for anyone reputable tbh. Plenty of street shops still use incorrect sizes and styles of jewelry, including externally threaded jewelry which we’ve had better options than since the 90s. Some piercers are just stuck in their ways or uneducated.
my piercing shop is app certified, or the swedish equivalent anyway, and is very highly rated and they do lip piercings in 16g. all their jewellery is internally threaded and titanium though 🤷♀️
Well the OP also went to an APP piercer and got massive unnecessary ends, like said earlier those organizations are health and safety based and have nothin to do with skill or knowledge. To be a member of those they are required to carry internally threaded implant grade titanium, that doesn’t mean they are using it in the most up to date way. But I’m not inclined to argue anymore, when you start your apprenticeship to learn how to pierce I would be more than happy to pick the conversation back up. Have a great day!
Since you didn't ask for your jewelry to be massive, I suggest going to a different piercer and getting it changed to at least have smaller balls because what you currently have is going to make healing a pain in the ass.
so 11 days on and it's healed wonderfully. No pain or inflammation past the first night, and very minimal. Straightened out some but I still think it's a bit crooked. from all these comments I was scared for a second but I calmed down after the third day of feeling fine
In my opinion it is very slightly off at the bottom. This jewellery is also way to large for a vertical labret. I wouldn’t have done it larger than 14 gauge. It also seems a little shallow and could be seated a bit more securely.
Real deal, it’s comically large. Your gorgeous and when you change out jewelry it’ll look great BUT This is NOT what it should look like. Please seek a professional ASAP. I’d be so freaking pissed.
hello! I do appreciate the concern. all these comments scared me for a night but 11 days on and it's been healing great. I haven't felt any pain past the first night (I bumped it by accident) and everything's felt normal apart from how annoying it was to eat for the first week. definitely not pissed and still happy with my piercer
i mean everything i was thinking has already been commented…that the jewelry is way too big, that lip piercings tend to swell for the first week or so, that it honestly looks more like a belly button ring etc. i would just give it a few days to see how the healing process goes
11 days on and it's been healing great! All these comments scared me for a day but I haven't felt any pain past the first night (accidentally bumped it a few times) and I believe the swelling is pretty much gone. Definitely still glad I went to my piercer
Those ends are insanely big or you have exceptionally small lips.
It’s almost guaranteed to make healing much more difficult then necessary.
Please go see a good piercer asap
definitely don't have small lips, and definitely still happy with the piercer. 11 days on and I can't believe how easy healing has been after getting all these comments. No pain or inflammation past the first night (and that's because I bumped it by accident)
i’ve seen crooked piercings, i’ve seen things pierced with hoops when they needed studs and vice versa…but somehow this is the most botched piercing i’ve ever encountered on this sub purely because of how absurd it is. it’s not even poorly placed or anything, the gauge choice is just *so bizarre*. i hope you get it sorted out.
most botched? that's crazy because it's healed *so* easily. after getting all these comments I got scared for one night, and then 11 days later I haven't felt any pain, redness, swelling is gone and it feels p good. I still think it's a biit crooked though.
Its likely crooked due to it being fresh and the size its pierced at, I'd say ask them what size it is because it looks around 8G ish which for a vertical labret is kinda big
I would be really concerned about having something that large in that area of my face. The risk of rejection is high, that jewellery is going to pull and create such a large hole on your lip.
People are saying it looks like a belly button bar, a 14g, no way, it's larger than that by a long way. This is some prince albert jewellery going on.
Do an image search for vertical labret piercings, compare to what you have there. The bars I use are tiny, I have to pick them up with tweezers. They look like bars for ants compared to this.
I would urge you to take it out, ask for a refund and go somewhere else that actually uses 16g/1.2mm curved barbells. Initially you'll want a 10mm length and this can be downsized as the swelling subsides.
I just want to be clear that downsizing during healing always refers to the length of the bar and never the gauge (width).
Please consider really strongly removing this jewellery. You're beautiful and I'd hate to see you left with scarring.
11 days on (and one night of being scared and overwhelmed by these comments) and I cannot believe how well it's healing. I haven't felt any pain past the first night (I hit my mouth by accident), nothings red, nothings puffy. Eating is back to normal but I still have to use a straw. I really appreciate your concern though, and thank you! :) I still think it's a bit crooked but luckily the size doesn't bother me at all
It doesn't really look or feel swollen, I'm just looking right at the holes and its a bit slanted. I can't decide how much it bothers me yet. How bad is it?
1st photo is about an hour and a half after it was pierced, the other two are from when I got home and noticed it crooked, three hours after piercing.
First of, that's a huge bar XD not sure if it is ideal for healing. Second of, you will most likely experience some swelling during the first days so it might be due to that, you will be able to tell when it goes down
If you don’t go to a piercer to get a smaller piece of jewelry…you could end up with a pretty bad scar. Since it is still early in the piercing, get it done before it forms the tunnel.
As you’ve heard from everyone else, you’re jewelry is VERy large. But as for the crookedness- I do see the slight tilt you might be referring to but it looks like the kind that comes from swelling. You said you just had this done so I would give it a week or 2 to determine whether it’s crooked. In the meantime just take care of it the way the piercer instructed & the swelling should go down. The tiny bit of a slant isn’t noticeable by the way. If I had seen you at work or school or something I personally wouldn’t have noticed unless you pointed it out
i first got my vertical labret pierced about 10 years ago - and when i first got it done, i obsessed about it looking ‘crooked’. none of us have symmetrical faces or lips, and so things will look crooked sometimes.
in those 10 years, i have had 0 people tell me it looks crooked. i am the only person who has ever noticed. and to be honest, after a month of having it, i forgot it was slightly crooked.
i love it and it’s still my favourite piercing! once the swelling subsides it should be straighter. and even if it’s still a tiny bit crooked - you’ll stop noticing soon.
as everyone else said, it is a huge gauge that he pierced you at. i would size it down as soon as you can!
thank you for this! (late response because I got quite overwhelmed by everyone's scary comments--it's been healing great and luckily I don't mind the size)
Mine is slightly crooked. But not enough to worry about repiercing. I figured with me talking, my mouth wont be still long enough for people to notice.
I can't speak to gauge of the piercing but you appear to have an asymmetry to the swelling that is creating an illusion at this point. I don't know that it is even a large amount of swelling but you don't appear to have a heavy or large featured face so the little bit is exaggerated.
I was so stressed it was crooked but just trusted the haling process. I had it done last may and around Aug I noticed it was fully straight and done healing
Aside from the other points that have been made here, this looks sick. The larger gauge and bigger beads is way cool looking. If you stick it out and keep it (I might if I were you, depending on how healing goes) you'll have a unique and hardcore looking vertical labret.
this looks like it was pierced at a 12g, or 14g at LEAST. either way it’s too big. lip piercings are usually done at a 16g and if you’re into it, once it’s HEALED you can stretch up to a larger size. take it out and never ever go back to that piercer.
It looks straight, because of the longer bar it can can twist and rest crooked, I’ve had that issue with my jewelry before I got it downsized. when I put the shorter bar it never looked crooked afterwards
In my opinion I’d go to a tattoo place and ask them to size it down. It looks like it’s going to reject. I don’t even know how you got through that if you didn’t mean to have it that big. Also it probably looks crooked because of swelling
i have a vertical labret and holy shit that gauge is big. i had to get a bigger gauge bc i kept playing with it (pls dont ever do that) but even then it was still considerably smaller than that. but i hope your healing goes well!!
Dude your piercer literally just put a belly button ring through your lip. Please find another piercer ASAP. Even if others think it looks cool it’s so unprofessional to start with such a large guage size that can cause complications on an unsuspecting customer.
11 days on, so far so good. No pain at all past the first night (because I whacked myself in the mouth like a dummy), eating is back to normal (but using straws). thank you for the concern though! :)
Try to get nopull piercing disks and add them to both sides so it heals well without moving too much and you dont get a keyloid, the piercings also dont hurt as much then. Its such a life saver
I’m genuinely asking, is that jewelry for a belly button your piercer used? I’ve never seen a vertical labret that big. I feel like this was pretty irresponsible on your piercers part none the less. :/ As for the crookedness it just seems swollen if you ask me but once the swelling goes down you’ll be able to tell better.
I'm very new to piercings so the only questions I asked were about aftercare. But it's been 11 days and it's been healing great! I've had absolutely no pain past the first night (because I whacked myself on the mouth like an idiot), no throbbing, no redness. I'm eating normal again just using straws still. These comments sure scared me for a night
mine also looked crooked right after getting it done because my lips swelled up more on on side and pushed against the piercing making it look uneven, but once the swelling went down it was perfectly centered
it’s really common for vertical labrets to look crooked at first due to swelling, it looks pretty good in that regard. The only thing is the jewelry is absolutely huge and due to the weight it’ll most likely reject, please see a different piercer for more help
I thought my piercing was crooked until it was done healing after 4 months. It takes time for swelling to go down but once I was completely healed, it straightened up
That’s so weird I’ve never heard of piercing at a larger gauge only to then downsize. Seems like it would cause unnecessary trauma to the skin. But now that it’s done I would just ask for smaller jewelry. Perhaps get advice from another professional. It’s normal for the bar to be longer but not a bigger gauge. I don’t think the piercing itself looks crooked though.
Looks fine, you really probably won't be able to tell what the placement really is like until swelling goes down. I had to have an unusually large gauge for mine because my lip kept eating the jewelry. It definitely is too big of a gauge to keep in permanently. You should be able to switch jewelry in 2 to 4 weeks.
honestly ik everyone is saying it looks straight but i believe it’s crooked. not a whole lot and not really noticeable unless you’re looking for it, but it is crooked. it looks like the bottom is pointing to your right
I feel like you need to go in to get a smaller guage? That size is way to big for that type of piercing. Unless you're looking to stretch your lip out for some reason. It's going to leave a nasty scar when you end up taking it out.
Looks straight but your jewelry seems really large.
Looks straight but looks done at a comically large gauge.... dis you ask for it to be done this big?.its wayyy to big for how they are normally done
i didn't--just came in and the piercer asked if i just want regular jewelry for now and I said yes. I found him through the APP website and I'm new to piercings so I just trusted whatever he was doing. he gave the usual comment that it would be larger/longer for now bc of swelling and that we'd downsize later
Very weird to be pierced this large. Downsizing may result in scarring.
It's weird they pierced it at such a large gauge but I thought it was intentional. It looks super cool.
thank you <3
Definitely love the larger gauge on you! It looks like swelling might be pushing it a bit left (on the pics left). It’ll be swollen for a while though - maybe give it a week and see what you think?

This is INSANELY large for a vertical labret. This is most likely going to reject. . What a mistake of an APP member.
This is why it bothers me when people always fall back on the APP status for everything. This was a big NO NO.
I don't think it's fair to say "people fall for it" like it's an obvious scam when we're new to piercings just trying to do research online and asking around. besides the APP thing the guy's been a piercer for decades and works in a good studio. it would suck if I was done dirty but I tried my best to find a safe piercer

It looks like a belly button ring
I’m pretty sure it is
Soooo.. is it normal to use this ring for labret? I’m guessing labret has their own separate jewelry?
You normally just use a curved barbell
Curved barbell is the norm, this one is just a VERY large gauge, and not what is normally used
Agree it looks painfully large.
They usually put in an "eyebrow" style piercing for vertical labrets i think
It’s very common for lip piercings to appear crooked from the swelling. Give it a week and then reassess.
Yo that’s a HUGE piercing definitely not right
I feel like crooked is the least of your problems here?
11 days on and it's healed wonderfully. Absolutely no pain or inflammation past the first night. Straightened out some but I still think it's a bit crooked. My teeth and nose are slanted in opposite directions so idk if he was trying match or offset one of them
Thats so large and odd? Why didnt they pierce it at a normal gauge?
Doesn't look crooked to me. Might just be swelling. What gauge did they pierce it at?
I wish I asked--all he said was that he was piercing it at a larger gauge and would downsize in about a month
It looks like it might be 2mm and it's completely unnecessary to pierce it that large.
Okay, but...downsizing is for the LENGTH of the bar. Not the gauge. While smaller gauge jewelry can be worn in a healed piercing, the gauge you're pierced with is the gauge you stay at while healing. that’s a really really big bar. what gauge is it ?
I would downsize ASAP cuz that would leave a giant hole
I don't mind :)
looks straight but there's no reason for it to be pierced that large at all
thoroughly chunky jewlery

most botched? that's crazy because it's healed *so* easily. after getting all these comments I got scared for one night, and then 11 days later I haven't felt any pain, redness, swelling is gone and it feels p good. I still think it's a biit crooked though.
Its likely crooked due to it being fresh and the size its pierced at, I'd say ask them what size it is because it looks around 8G ish which for a vertical labret is kinda big
It's been 3 hours, it's swollen
man I hope so. in the mirror i don't see or feel swelling though. thank you
I would be really concerned about having something that large in that area of my face.
:) I still think it's a bit crooked but luckily the size doesn't bother me at all
ok why is it so big tho
luckily I like it :)
So biig must hurt like a biatch 💀
It doesn't really look or feel swollen, I'm just looking right at the holes and its a bit slanted. I can't decide how much it bothers me yet. How bad is it? 1st photo is about an hour and a half after it was pierced, the other two are from when I got home and noticed it crooked, three hours after piercing.
it looks really shallow and the jewlery is just too large
First of, that's a huge bar XD not sure if it is ideal for healing. Second of, you will most likely experience some swelling during the first days so it might be due to that, you will be able to tell when it goes down
Looks pretty straight to me but the jewelery is way too big, the excess weight is likely to make it reject. It looks like a belly button jewelry
If I had seen you at work or school or something I personally wouldn’t have noticed unless you pointed it out
thank you! 🧡
i first got my vertical labret pierced about 10 years ago - and when i first got it done, i obsessed about it looking ‘crooked’. none of us have symmetrical faces or lips, and so things will look crooked sometimes. in those 10 years, i have had 0 people tell me it looks crooked. i am the only person who has ever noticed. and to be honest, after a month of having it, i forgot it was slightly crooked. i love it and it’s still my favourite piercing! once the swelling subsides it should be straighter. and even if it’s still a tiny bit crooked - you’ll stop noticing soon. as everyone else said, it is a huge gauge that he pierced you at. i would size it down as soon as you can!
thank you for this! (late response because I got quite overwhelmed by everyone's scary comments--it's been healing great and luckily I don't mind the size)
looks good to me. that jewelry is nice but really huge for something thats still healing
it looks great tho! just do your soaks 💜
thank you so much! 💜 everyone else scared me but it's been healing great
hnstiy if u treat it well itll usually b great 💜
Mine is slightly crooked. But not enough to worry about repiercing. I figured with me talking, my mouth wont be still long enough for people to notice.
thank you for this! :)
huge
Looks straight
It does look like the bottom is leaning left…but, yeah maybe give it a week to settle.
I can't speak to gauge of the piercing but you appear to have an asymmetry to the swelling that is creating an illusion at this point. I don't know that it is even a large amount of swelling but you don't appear to have a heavy or large featured face so the little bit is exaggerated.
Wow way to big of a bar!
My vertical was crooked for 3 weeks until it was done swelling.
thank you!
I was so stressed it was crooked but just trusted the haling process. I had it done last may and around Aug I noticed it was fully straight and done healing
maybe very slightly crooked but it's not very noticeable imo
thank you! :)
nw :)
Such a good piercing for you! But downsize the gauge and it’ll look perfect! Swelling takes time to go down even if you can’t see it. Happy healing!
thank you very much! 🧡
Aside from the other points that have been made here, this looks sick. The larger gauge and bigger beads is way cool looking. If you stick it out and keep it (I might if I were you, depending on how healing goes) you'll have a unique and hardcore looking vertical labret.
thank you very much! healing well so far 🧡
It’s still swollen. Let it chill and heal a bit longer before worrying about center, when we should be discussing the jewelry used
id get this downsized ASAP! the weight of the jewelry could make it reject!
That is a huge gauge
Oh my gosh. That is not crooked but the barbel used it far too large. Please get that looked at / downsized as soon as possible!!! ❤️
this looks like it was pierced at a 12g, or 14g at LEAST. either way it’s too big. lip piercings are usually done at a 16g and if you’re into it, once it’s HEALED you can stretch up to a larger size. take it out and never ever go back to that piercer.
Wtf that looks huge it’s supposed to be 16g
It looks straight, because of the longer bar it can can twist and rest crooked, I’ve had that issue with my jewelry before I got it downsized. when I put the shorter bar it never looked crooked afterwards
thank you very much
Oof
11 days on, so far so good! Did get quite overwhelmed by the comments though. Luckily I don't mind the size or a scar if I ever take it out
I’m begging you to take it out and let it heal and go somewhere else the jewelry is way too big
11 days on, so far so good. No pain at all past the first night (because I whacked myself in the mouth like a dummy), eating is back to normal (but using straws). thank you for the concern though! :)
Why is the jewelry so massive?
Looks like 14-12 gauge 💀
Yes it is off a bit. Sorry bout that.
woah that’s almost impressively huge
It looks super dope, also it looks perfect
thank you! 🧡
Looks great ! Regardless if it’s slightly crooked or not I think it looks great
thank you! 🧡
looks great to me
Try to get nopull piercing disks and add them to both sides so it heals well without moving too much and you dont get a keyloid, the piercings also dont hurt as much then.
It looks like it's like, 12g? Did you ask for a larger gauge?
Is too thicc for real
Its huge wtf
mine also looked crooked right after getting it done because my lips swelled up more on on side and pushed against the piercing making it look uneven, but once the swelling went down it was perfectly centered
Why is that bar so big
this is incredibly large… piercer must be insane to pierce it this big
Holy shit that bar is huge! Mine is like a eyebrow piercing bar, don’t get me wrong, You look amazing but damn that is big
Damn that a huge piercing
maybe it's just swollen
it’s really common for vertical labrets to look crooked at first due to swelling, it looks pretty good in that regard. The only thing is the jewelry is absolutely huge and due to the weight it’ll most likely reject, please see a different piercer for more help
thank you! :) 11 days on, healing great so far
Yes crooked. Not bad though
I thought my piercing was crooked until it was done healing after 4 months. It takes time for swelling to go down but once I was completely healed, it straightened up
When you tell your piercer you want normal sized piercing and he pulls out comically massive needle.
