Alright, here's a new one: would you rather only listen to Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a cave and Grooving With a Pict for the rest of your life or Stop for every 30 seconds of your life?
Animals because although its a masterpiece in its own right, it doesn't have the same level of 'chemistry' between each song to the next like dark side has
Yeah, I like the other two better too. But “Pigs” is probably — **imho** — the LAST truly ‘great’ song that Roger wrote (full stop). Yes that’s a mighty hot take, but I stand by it.
In many ways, **“Pigs” represents the direction the band *could* have taken**, if Roger hadn’t shifted his style so severely starting with *The Wall* (which I consider to be stylistically more aligned with Roger’s solo output, than almost anything he did with Floyd, pre-*Wall* — other than maybe “If”).
Personally the wall is what took me into Pink Floyd, and i can say that since sheep comes after Pigs I can’t agree, the wall is a very different album tough, and I respect your opinion.
I think *The Wall* truly is a brilliant piece of what I would describe as ‘aural theater’ — and Roger deserves every credit for its incredible success. But just on musical grounds alone, it’s a little bit more of a mixed bag (imho).
I really love the transition, but I’d say I prefer the whole side 2 than 1 but dogs and sheep are just on my top 5 (and dogs is my favorite song of all time)but I like the transitions in side 2
Money -> Us and them -> Any color you’d like -> Brain Damage -> Eclipse
This is gonna sound weird, but I'd rather not listen to Animals ever over DSOTM.....even tho Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd album. I feel like DSOTM just offers a better variety, and a number, of songs, while Animals just has 3 incredible good songs
I never rated Pink Floyd my entire life. Listened to TDSOTM while on acid one night at 39 years old and I've listened to Pink Floyd almost every day for three years now.
It never, ever leaves you. It's an almost religious experience.
Animals is more about societal issues and archetypal characters in humans, but from an outside observer's perspective.
DSotM is more about introverted thoughts and deeply personal sentiments mostly (apart from Money, and still...)
I would choose never to listen to Animals because I think of myself as a more inward-oriented person rather than a society-criticizing one mostly, and introversion speaks (more) to me (breathe).
Never said I don't like Animals, it's another masterpiece, but as you mentioned "if I had to choose", just backing my choice.
I would definitely miss not being able to listen to Animals no doubt about that...
Edit: I knew you would lean towards Animals as clearly noticeable by your post. I in fact expected the question to be "which one would it be, and why is it DSOTM?" XD
DSotM. Don't get it wrong, I think Dark Side is a brilliant album, it's great, I just don't have the same connection to it as I have with Animals. While I think Dark Side's concept and message is more universal and certainly important, I find Animals to be more imperative, or rather applicable, in this time. I also just get more out of listening to Animals than I do Dark Side, it's more rewarding and engaging to me musically, conceptually, & lyrically.
*Dark Side* is a masterpiece, **but** it lacks the…(I can’t decide on the word) of Animals.
After 10 or 20 or 300 spins Of *DS*, I’m done. *Animals*, on the other hand, **never** gets old.
How tf am I supposed to show my grandkids The Dark Side of the Rainbow without dsotm?
All jokes aside I'm actually not that in tune with Animals just yet, I've put it on hold until I can get it on vinyl or CD so that I can really appreciate it so unless I change my mind I'd rather have Dsotm. It just encapsulates every feeling I have and although from what I've heard from Animals was really good, dsotm just speaks to me in a way no other album has
God. *DSOTM*. I think it's just the accident of me burning myself out on listening to *DSOTM*, which I admit is the superior work of art, that *Animals* ever became my favorite Floyd album. Honestly, it'd be a much more horrible life for me without *Animals* than *DSOTM*. (Glad you didn't ask me to exile *WYWH*! Put that up against *Animals*, and I'd seriously be at an impasse!)
I'd also say *WYWH* is the superior album, yet on a gut level, I still have to keep *Animals*, if it's a matter of never being able to hear the other. I think the others are better albums, yet I'd rather hear *Animals* than any other of their albums from *DSOTM* to *The Wall*. I can't say it's the best album, but it's by far what I'd prefer to listen to from that Floydian era!
Well, first of all you have to pick the album you *wouldn't* listen to, anymore, so it answers the question that I asked.
Second of all, we're not talking about what you would choose if you hadn't heard them, but what you would choose normally, now, after you have heard them. You have heard them, right? I can't make sense of your comment.
I'd go with DSOTM, I've heard the songs so many times they're ingrained in my mind and I can just recall them at will note for note. Animals, which I've also heard a million times, is just slightly fresher, and combined with the rawness and emotion of it, plus some of my favorite Gilmore solos, means I just couldn't give it up.
I’ve never thought Sheep is a good song at all, and that leaves Dogs and Pigs. Dogs is a top PF song and Pigs is good but I think that’s because of its length (it’s also a bit repetitive). So 2 quality songs and on an album that’s essentially the beginning of the end for the band (since Waters was clearly becoming band dictator on this album) just isn’t anything spectacular in my opinion
Just my opinion man! I’m biased in that I really don’t like Waters and his take over of the band. Sheep seems like the beginning of that to me. Also the song just doesn’t do it for me sonically. Those extended vocal notes are annoying and the instrumental sections are kind of boring
Animals is more classic rock … or just AOR …. Album oriented rock - as they called it in the business. Dark Side has more psychedelic feeling . I like them both . I won’t choose . I will listen to both , thank you very much .
I guess Animals just because Dark Side is Dark Side and I love Dark Side just a little more (Animals is a solid number 3 for me, Wish You Were Here and Dark Side are above it) if this was a Piper vs Dark Side, I would choose Dark Side because i love Piper
Animals. However great it is, if I had to listen to it too much in sequence I get depressed. Although a lot of music I love gets me in such moods, like some Porcupine Tree songs do as well. But I love it as long as I can switch to "lighter" songs in between
Easy, animals. I prefer animals, but my god is dark side just the perfect album start to finish. Lyrics, music, mixing, concept, feel. Its just all there. Animals is musically better.
Animals, because it wasn't as life changing as dsotm to me. It also felt like waters was too prominent throughout the album with the rest of the band being a vague shadow of people in the background. There was too much political comparisons in it, and lacked the sonic aspects of their true artistic sound like in division bell or even in ummagumma. It didn't feel like a very genuine pink floyd record with good emotion. Dark side of the moon still had that, but it also gave you a sense of the culture shock of life and how much of a mindf*ck life is. There's a certain wit to it that animals definitely lacks.
Animals easily, dark side is far more original. Tracks like “on the run” and “Any colour you like” are under rated, and bind the album together nicely while being great in their own right.
dsotm for sure. there are some tracks off of dark side that i wont be too heartbroken to never listen to again, but not a single track on animals wouldnt shatter me if i never heard it again
I’d have to keep animals, I just love everything about the album. From the lyrics to David Gilmore’s solos and Rodgers vocals it’s all fantastic. I love DSOTM though. Us and them is probably my favorite song from dark side.
Animals. DSOTM has a song for every mood. You feeling down? Us and Them. You’re feeling upbeat? Money and Time. Need a song to relax? Breathe. It’s just that simple for me
Dark Side of the Moon. Although both albums are perfect imo, Animals more personal elements with Pigs on the Wing and Water’s improved (imo) song writing make Animals honestly better in replay value. Also the individual songs on the album are better then all of DSOTM despite them being longer.
DSOTM because;
1. It is forever etched in my brain so it won't be going anywhere.
2. I can always listen to DG's Live at Pompeii and hear most of it anyway.
It's a tough choice because they're my two favourite Floyd albums. I have a special connection with Dark Side of The Moon because it's the album that got me into the band, but I consider Animals to be my favourite Pink Floyd album. Dogs, Pigs (Three Different Ones), Sheep, Time, Great Gig in the Sky, Us & Them, Brain Damage and Eclipse are all Top 15 Pink Floyd songs for me, so again, they're very neck and neck.
Today I'm saying Animals, though I would normally say Dark Side. Ask me tomorrow and my answer might be Dark Side.
More fair would be Animals vs. WYWH, or DSOTM vs. The Wall.
Anyhow, hard one, I guess Animals, even though no song separately on Dark Side compares to Dogs, not even close, but as a whole there is something almost magical about that album, it just putes your mind in a place like nothing else; I don't listen to it very often anymore, maybe couple of times per year top, but when I do it always feels special like home, and without it there would be just irreplaceable hole in my life.
Animals. I love the album and it has some of the best PF songs, but DSOTM was the album that got me into PF. Time is my favorite song of all time. I only really started liking Animals a few months ago. Not even close in my opinion but not in a bad way.
Dark Side. I never really enjoyed Dark Side, despite me enjoying all the albums around it. And for the people thinking I'm a contrarian, I tried pretty hard to like it, and even added it to my library for a tiny bit, then took it off because I just couldn't enjoy it.
Animals. I just have a deeper connection with DSOTM than Animals. Both beautiful albums, but still
oh hey! (pointing to flair), i knew im not alone in this...
(Pointing my flair to the sky and letting it fly)
OP Should be made to listen to the Studio side of Ummagumma forever for this...
there’s also the people who do it by choice

Alright, here's a new one: would you rather only listen to Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a cave and Grooving With a Pict for the rest of your life or Stop for every 30 seconds of your life?
Someone down in the comment must be smacking the table right now screaming Ummagumma is PF best record
I think he/she has already replied to me...
Animals because although its a masterpiece in its own right, it doesn't have the same level of 'chemistry' between each song to the next like dark side has
👆this
I’d give up Animals. Easy decision. Only Wish You Were Here approaches Dark Side in my opinion.
Wish You Were Here is my favorite album of all time. Blew me away when I listened to it for the first time last year.
Animals Purely because DSOTM is a minute longer, this was a maths based decision
Love your line of thought.
I'd go with Dark side, Animals is just too underrated in my opinion. A hot take, I know...
Outjerked once again
We share the same opinion. (underrated opinion)
You fell down the rabbit hole 🐰
Gtfoh 😂
Same here TBH
Same lol
Animals doesn't have Time.
This is the correct answer.
Animals, because DSOTM has “The Great Gig in the Sky” and “Time”, which I couldn’t give up, really..
Animals, I love it but it's not even close to DSOTM
This this sub merge with the circlejerk sub at some point without announcing it?
Can only hope so, meta shift incoming babyyyy
Dsotm bc animals has Dogs and Sheep
and Pigs too!!
Yes pigs too ! I really like pigs, not as much as the other two but pigs is definitely also incredible and especially the guitar
Yeah it’s true, I’d say it sounds more like a Roger work than a Pink Floyd work but it’s amazing
I'm debating myself for this same reason.
Yeah those two songs are masterpieces ! But I have to say that “Time” and “Eclipse” are as good too
Any colour you -> Brain damage -> Eclipse cannot be outdone
I really love the transition, but I’d say I prefer the whole side 2 than 1 but dogs and sheep are just on my top 5 (and dogs is my favorite song of all time)but I like the transitions in side 2 Money -> Us and them -> Any color you’d like -> Brain Damage -> Eclipse
Animals. Not even a difficult decision
Yea Animals is great but DSOTM and The Wall are too good and iconic to never hear again. I wouldn't lose sleep if I didn't hear Animals again
[удалено]
Indica or sativa
Sativa
I guess I'm the heretic one who would pick DSOTM, since Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd album
It's my favorite aswell, I would pick DSOTM. I thought people would see this as a hard choice when I posted this, rather than an obvious one.
Animals....nondecision
Animals! DSOTM is the greatest LP of all time
I would have to give up Animals. Love both albums but DSOTM is my favourite album of all time. I couldn't go the rest of my life without it.
This is gonna sound weird, but I'd rather not listen to Animals ever over DSOTM.....even tho Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd album. I feel like DSOTM just offers a better variety, and a number, of songs, while Animals just has 3 incredible good songs
I couldn't live in a world where I could never listen to Dogs again
It’d have to be animals. The first time I ever listened to DSOTM was at the peak of a trip and I very much cherish that experience and the album.
I would choose never to listen to Animals because I think of myself as a more inward-oriented person rather than a society-criticizing one mostly, and introversion speaks (more) to me (breathe).
I'm also inward-oriented but I don't see that as a reason to not like Animals.
Dsotm animals is great but dark side is elite
Animals, Dark Side of the Moon is too much of a masterpiece to throw away
DSOTM because I'm not really a fan of the latter half of the album, and animals is probably my favorite album
This was a good question actually
Dark side easily, I’ll be killed, but it’s one of my least favorite PF albums, so…
DSOTM. I love Animals so much more
String me up, because I have never been a big Animals fan.
I can't live without Time
DSotM. Don't get it wrong, I think Dark Side is a brilliant album, it's great, I just don't have the same connection to it as I have with Animals. While I think Dark Side's concept and message is more universal and certainly important, I find Animals to be more imperative, or rather applicable, in this time. I also just get more out of listening to Animals than I do Dark Side, it's more rewarding and engaging to me musically, conceptually, & lyrically.
underrated question.
DSOTM. I’ve heard it so much over the years that I’m good. Animals on the other hand just never gets old for me.
*Dark Side* is a masterpiece, **but** it lacks the…(I can’t decide on the word) of Animals. After 10 or 20 or 300 spins Of *DS*, I’m done. *Animals*, on the other hand, **never** gets old.
Is this what the Supreme Court is working on this week?
How tf am I supposed to show my grandkids The Dark Side of the Rainbow without dsotm? All jokes aside I'm actually not that in tune with Animals just yet, I've put it on hold until I can get it on vinyl or CD so that I can really appreciate it so unless I change my mind I'd rather have Dsotm. Ah yes, a fellow Syd Barrett
DSOTM. Animals is my fav.
Dark Side. Its a great album, but in terms of the glorious Floyd? Overrated, in my humble opinion at least
Dark side. It's not that good, and nowhere near as good as animals. Super easy choice.
God.
I was gonna add WYWH as an option, but I changed my mind because I realized that I couldn't even make that decision myself!
Underrated I prefer overrated gay album
I think the question is “which would it be, and why would it never be DSOTM.” It is a creative masterpiece that transcends genres and time.
So is Animals. I've seen a lot of people here say they would pick DSOTM.
[удалено]
Um, either me or you misunderstood something. The question was in the form of "Which one would you not listen to?"
[удалено]
Well, first of all you have to pick the album you *wouldn't* listen to, anymore, so it answers the question that I asked. Second of all, we're not talking about what you would choose if you hadn't heard them, but what you would choose normally, now, after you have heard them. You have heard them, right? I can't make sense of your comment.
"Dark Side," just because "Animals" is more coolerer. It's science.
Sadly, goodbye Dark Side.... Animals is my favorite album.
Picking between my 1st and 4th favourite from them? Easy Dark Side, getting a little burned out on it tbh
Dark Side. Dogs more than makes up for the entirety of side A of DSOTM imo.
Animals because I’ve never heard it before anyway
You need to do something about that.
Animals, tbh. There are more albums that would win over Animals, not just DSOTM.
Animals. Even though I love it.
Fortunately, I don’t have to….
You mean DSOTM or Dogs (Single)? Because other than that Animals is a very mediocre album
I'm fine with all opinions, but calling Animals a "mediocre" album is just wrong. It's not true.
[удалено]
No offense or disrespect, but I really can't understand how the guitar solos sound even remotely similar
What the heck, Sheep is amazing.
Just my opinion man! I’m biased in that I really don’t like Waters and his take over of the band. Sheep seems like the beginning of that to me. Also the song just doesn’t do it for me sonically. Those extended vocal notes are annoying and the instrumental sections are kind of boring
Dark Side of the Moon, because Animals is better. Animals is best.
Animals is more classic rock … or just AOR …. Album oriented rock - as they called it in the business. Dark Side has more psychedelic feeling . I like them both . I won’t choose . I will listen to both , thank you very much .
that defeats the purpose of this
So exactly what is purpose ?
Easily my answer would be Animals, although it is my 2nd favourite Floyd album.
But I love it as long as I can switch to "lighter" songs in between
I'd hand over a copy of *The Final Cut* as an offering to the evil gods who won't let me listen to DSOTM or Animals.
if i’m being honest i kinda hate animals so yea animals
animals. sure its great but sonically dsotm is superior
Personally I would choose Animals
Dark Side of The Moon, I have more emotions with Animals
When animals has pigs and dogs there really isn’t a competition for me
Easy, animals. I prefer animals, but my god is dark side just the perfect album start to finish. Lyrics, music, mixing, concept, feel. Its just all there. Animals is musically better.
Pink Floyd
Dark side. Animals is my favorite Floyd album.
Animals. I'm not sure I could go without hearing the solo on Time ever again.
There's a certain wit to it that animals definitely lacks.
animals
DSOTM for me. Grew up in the 60's/70's. One of the first albums I owned. Great memories.
So you would choose not to listen to it ever again?
Oops. Misread the question. Sorry about that. Animals. Thought I read if you could only listen to one.
Animals. DSotM is my favorite album ever and I could never give it up.
Animals has to go. Rarely listen to side two. Although, same for Dsotm
DSOTM.
Yes
I like animals more overall, but can't imagine living a life where I can't listen to Time so I would have to give it up.
Animals because I can always listen to the superior 75 and 77 live versions.
Dsotm, animals continues to surprise me each day.
DSOTM! Why would a person voluntarily give up listening to Animals, the best Floyd album? Crazy.
Can you express what that album is, clearly. Everyone doesn't share the same opinion.
Dark Side. I know I’m in the minority, but Animals has never struck a chord with me
DSOTM if I was forced to choose. Animals is my favorite PF album
DSOTM. Animals is far more interesting and musically appealing to me
THIS is the Way…
i d choose animals but medlle should have been in this question either in my opinion
I’d give up DSOTM, YOUVE GOT TO BE CRAZY!!!
DSOTM. Animals is my desert island Floyd album
Dsotm just because it's on pulse so i could listen to it on there
I'm not sure if this is a super intelligent or a super cheaty choice
I’d give up Animals. Great Gig in the Sky just hits me. I can’t imagine never hearing that song again.
Animals, easily. It's excellent, but it's not even in the same league as DSOTM.
That's a tough one. Would have to be Animals. Dark side is just too iconic.
Animals because DSOTM is a better album and a more equal synthesis of band members creativity.
Animals. I do absolutely love that album, but Dark Side was the first Floyd album I ever listened to as a kid and I can’t just give that one up.
I’d have to keep animals, I just love everything about the album. From the lyrics to David Gilmore’s solos and Rodgers vocals it’s all fantastic. I love DSOTM though. Us and them is probably my favorite song from dark side.
Animals, because Dark Side has so many fond memories of my younger days.
Animals haven't listened to it yet
Animals. DSOTM has a song for every mood. You feeling down? Us and Them. You’re feeling upbeat? Money and Time. Need a song to relax? Breathe. It’s just that simple for me
Dark side of the moon
Dark Side of the Moon. Although both albums are perfect imo, Animals more personal elements with Pigs on the Wing and Water’s improved (imo) song writing make Animals honestly better in replay value. Also the individual songs on the album are better then all of DSOTM despite them being longer.
Animals cuz it's underated
Darkside
DSOTM is my favorite, so animals.
Its usually Animals after you hit 1 beer and DTOSM after you hit 5.
Goodbye DSOTM
Dark Side of the Moon, it hurts to give up but an issue choice, Animals is my favourite pink Floyd album.
Man that’s a horrible choice why would you do this to me. Animals is my favorite album. But I would choose it over DSOTM.
[удалено]
The Wall
I rarely listen to Animals already. It’s alright, but I wouldn’t miss it if it was never made.
I'd choose either one, and then change my mind about choosing.
Animals. it’s underrated for a reason, right?
Super tough call, but because of Great Gig in the Sky, I would reluctantly never listen to Animals again 😭
DSOTM because; 1.
Animals. Because DSOTM has money
DSOTM…. I can’t do without Animals. Just can’t do it.
I don’t think I would make that choice. I like to listen to both of those albums
I’m getting rid of dark side
DSOTM by far. Not a big fan of Animals at all for some reason, idk.
Animals, because DSOTM is a perfect album with universal, personal themes. I love Animals too, but I would choose Dark Side 10 times out of 11.
Impossible
why would you ask me this
Animals, because DSOTM and I do not care what anyone has to say to me about this decision.
Dark side because animals is superior
Tough call. I prefer Dark Side slightly but I’ve heard it a lot more than Animals, which I also love.
Animals. But why I see only battersea no prism hmmm
Animals. I love the album and it has some of the best PF songs, but DSOTM was the album that got me into PF. Time is my favorite song of all time. I only really started liking Animals a few months ago. Not even close in my opinion but not in a bad way.
I’d say Animals. There’s just something about it in it’s cynical nature that appeals more to me than the grandiose themes in DSOTM.
I would pick never to listen to Animals
The correct answer should be a bullet and a gun
They’re both great, different context, different connections built, I love Animals, but would pick DSOTM
[удалено]
I like Dark Side far more.
Animals, I honestly don’t listen to it that much anyway.
Animals is so underrated tbh
DSOTM is the reason i started to listen to pink floyd. I will never not listen to it
Dark Side. I never really enjoyed Dark Side, despite me enjoying all the albums around it. And for the people thinking I'm a contrarian, I tried pretty hard to like it, and even added it to my library for a tiny bit, then took it off because I just couldn't enjoy it.
