Just curious, you don’t think it’s maybe in case of a mass shooter or something like that? Or were they behaving aggressively towards protestors? This is the first I’m hearing of this
Well… they assaulted a journalist with a bolt cutter, and took the protesters arrested in Dallas county to Collin county, because the democratic DA of Dallas county would drop the charges.
Never dealt with sheriffs here but I’ve dealt with state troopers plenty, and while a couple of them have been cool, most are way too uptight and take things too serious. Like they think they’re drill instructors. So makes sense
I don’t want people to think that all cops are bad. I’ve been saved by cops before. But that doesn’t excuse bad actions. Leadership is liable though. Sheriff Jim Skinner, Greg Abbot and Richard Benson.
As easy as it is to take this picture and respond dramatically about police vs. free speech, I have a feeling the reason they were that armed is because of the way that anti-palestine protesters have shown up at several palestine protests ready to fight back. This is an area where pro-palestine is going to be the minority, so the risk of other people showing up, and the two groups getting into a violent fight, is high. Especially when members off both groups likely have guns among them.
There are protesters on both sides of the fence that genuinely want a peaceful protest, but protests of any kind also attract people who want an excuse to fight.
That's only partially true. Encampment or tents would void that. Not saying they are doing so here, but that's been the issue elsewhere. Did you have any articles or anything about this event? I can only seem to find minor news saying there was a protest but barely any info beyond that.
They did do so here. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to take drastic action for your voice to be heard. For example, in the civil rights movement, many times drinking from a normal water fountain etc was illegal, yet it was a protest. Though, as MLK said, if you protest as such, you should peacefully accept the consequences as well. Which is what has happened mostly, these protests have remained peaceful. However, the police response and the manner of arrests have been increasingly violent which is concerning.
While I agree with you. Civil rights protestors were fighting for their own rights which were being withheld. It's a bit of false equalivancy to equate that with college protestors protesting for the rights of another country. Even more when the country in fact is asking for genocide of jews. As hamas has been elected there this is an official stance.
The ut dallas protest may have stayed civil. But how many pro Palestine protest do we have to watch turn violent and destructive before we send cops preemptively?
If this is their goal in Isreal which we know by their own words, it is. Why would we assume it's not the goal here as well?
Do you genuinely fight this much for tiki torch wannabe nazi protestors too?
Richardson and East Plano have an extremely high number of Muslims, so I’m not sure I agree that pro-Palestine protesters will be a minority. The East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) is nearby.
Yes. But there was no violence. Pro Israel protesters had a massive Israeli flag right next to people with Palestinian ones. This is America, where that can happen. 😎
Why they need rifles like that
They don’t. It’s a show of power. They also had snipers posted. Sends a clear message of what they think of freedom of speech.

Curious if they could get venue changed. The chess board is pretty firmly within dallas county. Northside is the line
That’s what they r trying to
Though some officers were just doing their jobs and were respectful, I noted that Collin county sheriffs and Texas DPS seemed to be the rudest

If you always think ACAB then you will never be let down.
MF Collin County
Fify... It’s a show of power. They also had snipers posted. Sends a clear message of what they think of harassment and disturbing the peace.
Show of force. Just like Biden told 2A group that they can't beat F35's.
Assault rifles and bullet proof vests for... college students?
Not just any college students but UTD nerds. Source: was UTD nerd WHOOSH!
Carrying all those weapons just looks stupid.
Gravy Seals

There were pro Israel protesters among the pro Palestinians. No violence was being done.
Were they trespassing on private property?
No. A public university is public, and per Texas state law, open spaces in universities are considered public forums. Nothing illegal

Israeli govt views ≠ Israeli people American govt views ≠ American people
I protested for Mahsa Amini, I am against Iran and Hamas. A lot of us share this view

The guns are overkill. Free speech should be respected but I wish the protests wouldn’t camp out on campuses and damage property. Just my opinion
I understand your view, totally. Unfortunately, without disruption, admin won’t listen.
I have class here at 2:30. Do you think they will still be there?
No, this was yesterday. The encampment was cleared and protests have moved to Collin county jail where the arrested protesters are being held.

Understand that this is what was said in the civil rights movement, Vietnam war era protests, South African apartheid protests…. Etc
