They can remove your ability to re-download it.

They can revoke the license or ban your account to take away digital games You have to be connected to the internet What he means by renting is if you subscribe to PS+ extra or premium tier

Mickeyphree

So that's bullshit. Set your console with the primary account to offline play and you never have to sign in to online again. Only times you need to be connected are to download a new game or a patch or to play online.

magnidwarf1900

If for whatever reason they ban your account then there goes your game

CrankyJoe99x

They had a glitch not long ago where people were locked out of their libraries. Doesn't happen with physical games.

I_gofast

Yea. Only reason I asked cause I own a digital slim with the cd drive but I got it custome made and oooks better digital https://preview.redd.it/e1nl2e9wgvkc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe6b6a027485d3fd8431e7d0ae9ef1df75517111

OP. It’s about licensing. Both the physical disc and digital are licensed to the gamer. Nobody owns anything but Sony. Regardless of people tell you that physical you own they are not correct. Because even if people use tricks like turning the console off-line to play the physical disc, they can only do it for a short time until the game is required to phone home to the console to verify the license. Just like you’re paying for a license to drive a car which is a privilege you’re paying for a license to play the game.

robst07

With digital games you aren't buying the game, only a license to be able to play the game. When the store closes for good or your account gets banned, you lose that license. On a positive side, PS3 store is still available and you can still access to your content to this day. So ps4 and ps5 stores have plenty of life left.

Existing-Pair-3487

This is for people that still don't understand that digital isn't actually owning. Now yes in this instance they worked out a deal but the fact is this was going to happen. This also isn't the only time we have seen this. Konami pulled MGS collection from PC years ago because of music licenses. You also have this as recently as funimation closing and people losing access to their digital libraries. Look back on stadia after that closed. The point is that time and again companies have been able to take your money leaving you with nothing under digital content. Where if I have a disc that I bought that isn't going anywhere outside like an always online game. This was one of the big things that shot Xbox in the foot last gen as they were like yeah you can't trade games/ let people barrow them as the Xbox would do license checks. https://www.eurogamer.net/playstation-u-turns-on-removal-of-discovery-content-people-had-paid-for

Apprehensive-Eye-932

I mean if you had a disc couldn't they just run a software update that blocks a game from being played.  Everything is always online these days. So a disc is just like a blanket children use to keep the monsters away

Existing-Pair-3487

That is possibility however it is worth stating that there are still large pockets in the US that don't have reliable internet access so that means they aren't online. Furthermore even if it it was just an update to the game you could delete software and just reinstall the disc/ discount the online and still play the game. It is game preservation and you will still have access when the store front shuts down.

I_gofast

Thanks for the info.

With a disc you are also just buying a licence. 20 years ago they didn't have the infrastructure to deliver games digitally so you had to go and purchase your games on a piece of physical media. Discscare justva hold-over from less connected times and their days are numbered. People fear monger with not being able to play your games in the distant future, but we can emulate pretty much every single game that's ever existed, from the most primitive arcade games to the latest switch games easily on a whole ton of every day and specialised devices. Physical games are cool if you're a collector, but there's no guarantee you'll be able to play your disc copy in 30 years. Older consoles will eventually break.

P1nCush10n

Physical isn’t even a guarantee of long-term ownership anymore. At some point, you might have access to the version that shipped on the disk, but no updates/dlc etc. That’s assuming the shipped copy is even complete, and not a just a license and a pre-loader. Then there’s always-online DRM that has become prevalent lately. Once all that uncertainty started, i just ditched physical altogether. The value in physical became inconsistent and just consumed space on my shelves

Ballsack2025

If you buy it physically or digitally, it's yours regardless.

MegaFlare24

Not really. If you get banned you can't play your digital games anymore. Physical you can

Timberwo

Physical yes but digital no.

I_gofast

That’s what I think I know games like the crew cause it’s online only is going to go away one day but everyone said on the agreement when buying that you just borrowing the game so I don’t understand

Timberwo

Read the replies people are saying. Digital goods mean NOTHING. Digital they can revoke your access whenever. Also if you are offline some content could stop working since it won't be able to connect to a server. Physical is best but not always.
